Manage Your Job References BY HEATHER EAGAR
Dealing with job references is often times like dealing with the pink elephant in the room. You know you’re supposed to address and take care of this issue, but because you don’t know where to start, you simply don’t take action at all. It’s easy to understand why there might be some confusion. Sometimes, you are told to add your references to your resume. Other times, you’re told to add the simple phrase: “References available upon request.” Or you might even be advised to hold off completely until your interview and walk in with a separate reference sheet. It can be a lot to think about. So to help you out, let’s stop avoiding the issue and take on that pink elephant in the room.
“References Available Upon Request” If you’re still adding this phrase to the bottom of your resume, you can go ahead and delete it. Many experts agree that it is something that’s now unspoken. Employers understand that if you haven’t added them to your resume, they must be available upon request. Really, what are the odds of you telling a hiring manager or interviewer you’re not going to provide any references?
What to Do With Your Reference List Now that you’ve successfully created your reference list, it’s time to decide what to do with it. Many times, you’ll be given instructions from the prospective employer on whether to send it with the resume or not. If you’re not so instructed then you can hold on to it for your interview. In this case, you want to print more than one copy on highquality resume paper. Another way to make use of references is to get recommendations via your LinkedIn page. This allows you to offer instant access to multiple references, cutting out some of the work for you and prospective employers. Now that we’ve dealt with that pink elephant in the room, it’s time to get started managing your references. What are you waiting for?
Creating a Separate Reference Sheet Whether you plan to send your references with your resume and cover letter or bring them into your interview – or both – it’s a good idea to create a separate reference sheet. When creating your sheet, you want to format it in a similar fashion as you would your resume. This means using a standard file format and standard fonts. You want to save your file in either Microsoft Word or as a PDF document. And when you save your document, it’s good to title it using your name and the word “references” (i.e. “JohnDoe_References”). The best way to make sure your reference page looks like your other documents is to save your cover letter or resume as your document page. This way, you know for sure that you’re using the same fonts and sizes.
Choosing References / What Information to Include On your reference sheet, you want to include at least three professional references – the best options would be from your most recent employers. After you’ve determined who you will add to your reference list, you want to make sure to include the name of your reference, the company your reference works for, the business address, email and phone. But most importantly, you want to make sure that your reference’s contact information is current. If you're a nurse, you're truly in a league of your own. Want to know what makes you so special? Read on to find out.
YOU'RE NOT SCARED OF BODILY FLUIDS. If it oozes, gushes or is otherwise expelled from another person's body, you're right there ready, willing and able to deal with it. A little - or a lot - of vomit? No problem. Blood? No worries. A little hydrogen peroxide will take it right out of your scrubs. Phlegm, urine or feces? Bring it on. You don't even flinch. It's easy to joke about these matters, but nurses' dedication is evident by their willingness to care for patients, even in unpleasant conditions. It's not easy to take things in stride when you're covered with a complete stranger's excrement or blood.
YOU MAKE MULTITASKING LOOK LIKE AN ART FORM. You must be an excellent juggler because you usually have multiple balls in the air at any given point in the day. In the span of five minutes, you can go from taking a patient's vitals to grabbing fresh linens to speaking with a family member in the hallway to taking a call from a doctor. And charting? Who's got time for that? You do!
YOU LOVE THE DETAILS. Nothing gets past you. You pay close attention to details. And that's a good thing. Your patients' lives depend on it. Getting the wrong medication dosage could cost a patient his or her life. Failing to notice a change in a patient's condition could have dire consequences. Your keen eyes and ability to remember even the slightest detail are often the reason why patients get discharged home to their families instead of the alternative.
YOU HAVE AN ENORMOUS BLADDER.
 It's no secret that bathroom breaks can be hard to come by during a 12-hour shift. Better be glad you were blessed with an abnormally large bladder!
YOU'RE A GREAT INTERPRETER. Of physician handwriting, that is. Even with electronic medical records and computer order entry systems, lots of physicians still write orders by hand. And nurses still have to decipher them. Some things never change.
YOU REALLY LIKE WEARING PAJAMA PANTS TO WORK. Let's face it. Scrubs are basically pajamas. But they sure are comfy, right? Who wouldn't want to work in them? Your suitadorned friends must be so jealous! You are a caring, compassionate person. It's true. Nurses are kind people who are devoted to taking care of others. Being able to understand and empathize with your patients improves their overall care - and sometimes their medical outcomes.

The nation has experienced economic highs and lows, and drudged its way through 14 years of war and strife. Millions of brave men and women have sacrificed life and limb to serve this country overseas, protecting the freedom of the American people. They do their job without complaint, exhibiting a steadfast determination to achieve the objectives set forth for them, with little say in the process. Now, with combat troops home from Iraq and winding down commitments in Afghanistan, millions of America’s finest are returning home in search of normalcy. These individuals are returning to a different America, but they bring with them numerous skills and character traits instilled through service and tested on the battlefield. The push to ensure that the nation’s veterans have employment when they leave military service has been underway for years. Regardless of the industry your business serves, there are multiple benefits to hiring veterans as a member of your team. Some of these benefits apply to military members entering any civilian role. Other benefits apply to specific industries. The healthcare industry is an area of the American economy that is under great strain. When caring for other military members, veterans deal with injuries, diseases, and other physical ailments that occur with less frequency in civilian healthcare sectors. The next time your healthcare company posts job openings and receives a flood of resumes, take a few extra minutes to scour the pile for the resume of veterans. By no means should you ignore civilians with equal or greater experience. I want to keep one and use the bill-pay option for monthly stuff like utilities, so we can keep earning rewards points. I look at my way as a method of just re-routing the money and paying it off each month. Am I wrong in looking at it like this?
- Cheryl Dear Cheryl, Yes, you are. Life never goes as planned. You can have all the well-reasoned and best-intentioned ideas you want, but sooner or later something will go wrong. Why not use a debit card that has a rewards system attached? Lots of debit card programs offer the same kinds of rewards programs that credit card companies do, with one big exception — you don’t have to go into debt! Studies have shown that the vast majority of people never redeem their credit card airline miles. Other studies show that people spend more when using credit cards as opposed to cash. That extra money you spend on things you don’t need is money you could have been saving and investing. So, where’s the reward?

COLLECTIONS & CREDITORS QUESTION Dear Dave, We were very late on one of our credit card bills, and now it has been turned over to a collection agency. The collection company has offered us three or four different payment options. Does the original creditor accept the agreement, too, if we accept one of the collection agency’s options? - Anonymous Dear Anonymous, In most situations of this type, the collection agency owns the debt outright or they’re directly representing the original creditor. It’s pretty much standard operating procedure when someone has defaulted on a loan. My advice would be to accept the deal they’ve offered that makes the most sense for you and your current financial situation. It’ll ding your credit report, and show a settlement on the defaulted credit card, but that’s not the end of the world. There’s already a mark against you for it being turned over to collections. If you want to keep things like this from happening in the future, you need to get control of your finances. Stop playing with credit cards! — Dave
