But the first date is just sort of a n i n t r o d u c t i o n , r i g h t ? Yo u ’ r e b o t h s e e i n g i f t h e r e ’s a n y i n i t i a l , m u t u a l c o m p a t i b i l i t y. A s k i n g s o m e o n e h o w much they make, or where they are on their debt snowball in this scenario is officially weird—even by my standards. In other words, use manners and tact. CONTINUE FOR PORT OF HOUSTON AUTHORITY
During the last regular monthly meeting of the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority for 2015, Chairman Janiece Longoria highlighted the port’s most recent achievements including the Port Authority reaching a historic high of handling more than 2 million loaded container units. The historic milestone occurred at the Port Authority’s Bayport Container Terminal. Noting the Port Authority’s new mission statement “to move the world and drive regional prosperity,” Chairman Longoria reflected on the most recent economic impact study, which showed 1.175 million jobs in the state of Texas are due to port activity. The study indicated that the increased figure reflects an additional 148,000 jobs were created due to Port of Houston business. “The Port of Houston’s economic impacts are essential to the prosperity of our region and our state,” Chairman Longoria stated. The Martin Associates study further revealed that public and private marine terminals at the Port of Houston had a statewide economic impact of $265 billion in 2014, which is 16 percent of Texas’ total gross domestic product. Executive Director Roger Guenther continued the delivery of good news in his report to the Port Commission with the announcement that the Port Authority received its 41st consecutive Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, which was awarded by the Government Finance Officers Association for the Port Authority’s 2014 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. Guenther also shared in his report that Port Authority facilities led by container operations, handled more than 28 million tons of cargo, a 3 percent growth versus 2014. He further added that in 2015, container facilities handled more than 1 million loaded containers, a 12 percent growth as compared to this time last year. Guenther also announced that all four of the new Super PostPanamax ship-to-shore (STS) cranes at Barbours Cut Container Terminal have been commissioned and are placed into operation. Year-to-date operating revenue was $268 million, up by 12 percent compared to this time last year. For the first time in the Port Authority’s history, operating cash flow surpassed $120 million. Year-to-date net operating income grew 29 percent. Noting responsible management of spending, Guenther highlighted the growth of only 8 percent was to support revenue performance. “The intent is to reinvest these resources in port infrastructure to sustain and grow our contribution to the region’s economy,” Vol. 21 Issue 1025 Guenther stated. I have a casual, seasonal part time job, but I really do need another job which brings me to the question: Where do I look? My proficiency in English is not excellent, but I understand everything you say other than some idiomatic expressions or hard accents. I read and write English, but I don’t have one h u n d r e d p e r c e n t f l u e n c y. F o r example, I know I cannot work in customer service because even though I can deliver an exceptional job in Spanish I am not going to meet the standards f or a na tive English speaker. I have sent my resume to almost ever y post requiring a Bilingual person with an administrative background and nobody ever calls me back. I do not know wha t is holding me back: 1. Do I live too far? (I live in Ka ty) 2. My resume is not good enough? 3. Am I over qualified or not qualified enough? I do want to make things right, but I don’t know where to start. If you live in Ka ty, make sure tha t you are searching within a bout 30 - 45 minutes from your home. If the trip is any longer than that, many employers will not be interested because there are constant problems with traffic and with burn-out. It makes it harder to consistently be on time, and usually the employee begins searching f or something closer to home before long.Just Google the company to find the location. 2. If you are applying for jobs tha t are within your skill level, you shouldn’t be under or over qualified. The one thing tha t you need to do a bove an ything else is g ive yourself a pat on the back for facing so man y challenges and seeking a way to overcome them. Choosing the Right Truck Driving School If you have been dreaming of a life on the open road you probably have a lot of questions. Learning to drive a tractor trailer can be the key to an exciting and lucrative new career, but it is important to go into it with your eyes wide open. Life as a truck driver is more than just driving across the country – successful truck drivers often must load and unload their trailers as well. Understanding what is truly involved in the truck driving industry is a key to success on the job. Another key to success on the job is finding the right trucking school. The growth of the trucking industry in recent years has helped to create a veritable cottage industry of truck driving schools, some springing into existence virtually overnight. In order to get the top notch instruction you need to be successful it is important to do your homework and find a school that is as committed to your success as you are.
Some of the questions all would be truck drivers should ask of all potential truck driving schools include:
How long has your school been in business? Beware of schools with a short track record. Those schools could disappear just as fast as they came, leaving you without the education you need and leaving you with nowhere to turn for help.
How long have you been in this location? it is a big red flag if the trucking school has moved to multiple locations in a short period of time.
How many years of experience do your instructors have? Look for a school whose instructors have plenty of actual behind the wheel experience. You will generally get the best instruction from real world truckers.
How long does the training take? While it may be possible to learn how to drive a truck in only a few weeks, it is generally not a good idea. Look for a school with a reasonably long training period.

Houston Community College offers a Professional Truck Driver class where you will get all of the training you need to begin a career in the transportation industry. According to their website, hccs.edu, “The basic entry-level truck driving program is designed to prepare students for an entry-level truck driving position. The program consists of two courses taken as a block. The courses cover rules, regulations, hours of service, and practical hands-on training.” To qualify for the class, you will need to be at least 18 years old for intrastate driving and 21 years old for interstate. There is a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and drug test that you need to pass as well. This is something that will recur throughout your career. If you have a good driving record and a current Class C Driver’s License, you are set to enroll! Financial Aid and Scholarships are available.
Do you have partnerships with trucking companies? The best trucking schools will have long standing partnerships with companies who need to hire drivers. Beware of schools who do not have companies waiting for their graduates.
What type of career support do you offer? A quality school will give you a great education, both behind the wheel and in the classroom, and those quality schools will be able to offer career guidance to their students once they have completed their training. By asking these tough questions before you start training you will increase the odds that your new career will be a successful one from the start.

JOBSPARX INSIDER ADVICE:
JobSparx spoke with trucking employers, and they have the following advice for people who are aiming to become professional truck drivers: One employer, as a medium local carrier, cannot hire new truck school graduates because of the insurance he carries for his fleet. Candidates would need to have at least 2 years experience as an over-the-road (OTR) driver, and be 25 years old. Other employers, depending on the insurance they carry, can hire drivers as young as 21, with different levels of driving experience. Check employment ads carefully. If you are graduating soon, the larger national transportation companies like Schneider National and CR England are able to hire new graduates because they provide their own insurance. Just remember that OTR jobs require a lot of time away from home. Check for opportunities before graduation, and speak with the instructors at your school for job leads and advice.
