Gas Tungsten Arc Welding
A Profitable Career Choice
Article Source: https://EzineArticles.com/expert/Jennifer_L._Jenkins/890030
If you are already a seasoned TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) or GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) welder, or if you want to be a TIG welder, I’m going to give you a few things to think about. A good TIG welder can command a very good living. Sometimes six- figures or more. The GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) process of welding requires a high degree of skill, that’s one of the reasons why it pays so well. Not only do you have to manipulate the torch and maintain a tight arc length, but when using filler metal, you also have to feed the filler rod into the puddle with your non dominant hand. On top of that, if you’re using water-cooled equipment, you’ll have to use a rheostat to start the arc and gas flow. Usually, this would be a foot pedal or switches on the TIG torch. Plus, you have to read the puddle and follow the 5 essentials of welding, which are: electrode size: current: arc length: travel speed: and: electrode angles. This must be done in order to produce a quality weld. So, there is a lot going on when you are welding with the TIG process. You must have a very high degree of concentration, similar to meditation. Then, if you are welding pipe, using the freehand technique or walking the cup, (which are 2 techniques I will talk about in a future article), then for most people it becomes even harder. I say for most people because, welding is a skill, and just like athletes, some are naturals, and some have to work a little harder to hone that skill. I will go into the technical ins and outs of this amazing process in a future article. For now, I just want to give you an overview on the process and talk a bit about the many benefits and rewards associated with this process. There are very few drawbacks to GTAW. The most 8 APRIL 6, 2018
By Jennifer L. Jenkins
important one to think about is: It’s not very portable. Another one to consider is: It’s a slower process. And wind, and drafts could affect the welding. This may be true, but the benefits far out-weigh the disadvantages. TIG is super-strong, it makes use of argon or helium or a mixture of the two as shielding to protect the weld zone. There is no slag, so a properly deposited weld bead has a lot less chance of having discontinuities or defects. Filler metal is not always required, without filler metal is called Autogenous welding. The arc and weld pool are clearly visible to the welder. There is no filler metal carried across the arc, so there is very little spatter or none at all. Pulsing may be used to reduce the heat input and give the welder more control, especially useful on thin metals or exotic metals like stainless steel, inconel, monel, hastalloy, etc. And of course, welding can be performed in all positions. It is very aesthetically pleasing to look at. Another thing about TIG is its very versatile and you can weld just about any metal, in fact, it was first developed for the Aerospace industry for welding of magnesium. When done right, it is a very pretty, attractive weld. So if you have considered TIG welding as a career, and think you have what it takes, then I suggest getting some quality training. Great training, and a lot of hands on practice, that’s what it will take to get you to an employable skill level where you can earn an above average wage right out of school. Add a few solid years of experience to that and you could be earning $25 - $45 an hour or more, depending on your skill level, location, type of application and whether you show up to work on time. LOOKING FOR A REPUTABLE WELDING SCHOOL? SEE TULSA WELDING’S AD ON PAGE 48 FOR INFORMATION. VOL. 23 ISSUE 1135

Part-Time Jobs that Pay
More Than $20 per Hour ELKA TORPEY
Want more time for pursuits other than work? A part-time job may be for you.
In table 1, dental hygienists and diagnostic medical sonographers, also are projected to grow much faster than average.
But because part-time work may result in less pay, you’ll want to maximize your earning potential. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) can help you identify occupations with average wages for part-time workers that topped $20 per hour in 2016.
An associate’s degree was the most common education level among the occupations in table 1. Associate’s degree programs usually involve at least 2 years of full-time academic study beyond high school.
REDUCED HOURS, HIGH PAY
Shorter-term credentials, such as certificates or other postsecondary nondegree awards, may be another option. Diagnostic imaging workers, for example, sometimes complete a 1-year hospital or college certificate program in lieu of earning an associate’s or higher degree.
The BLS Current Population Survey defines part-time workers as those who usually are on the job between 1 and 34 hours per week. About 18 percent of all workers were part time in 2016. And data show that most of those people worked part time voluntarily, rather than for economic reasons (such as being unable to find a full-time job). Another BLS survey, the National Compensation Survey (NCS), classifies workers as part-time based on how the employer defines the term. The tables that follow show some occupations that, according to NCS, have hourly wages for part-time workers that are higher than $20—nearly triple the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. In each of the tables, occupations related to healthcare are most prevalent. A mean wage is an average, and it can help to indicate how much workers in an occupation might expect to earn; however, industry, geographic location, and other factors affect wages that employers pay. NCS does not calculate the average wage for all part-time workers. The occupations in the tables are grouped by educational attainment, based on BLS determinations of what is typically required of entry-level workers. Individual workers in these occupations may have more or less education than what is typically required for entry. To help you assess an occupation’s outlook, the tables also include data showing its rate of growth projected between 2014 and 2024. Many of the occupations in the table are projected to grow much faster than 7 percent, the average rate of growth for all workers. These data come from the BLS Employment Projections program and are for both full- and part-time workers, because projections are not calculated separately for part-time workers.
, ASSOCIATE S DEGREE
Table 1 highlights selected occupations in which entry-level applicants typically need a high school diploma, a postsecondary nondegree award, or an associate’s degree. New workers in some of the occupations may need experience in a related occupation to be hired or may have to get on-the-job training to attain competency. Physical therapist assistants, with a wage of nearly $27 an hour for part-time workers, is projected to be the third-fastest-growing occupation in the economy over the 2014–24 decade. The two highest paying occupations. 6, 2018 46 APRIL
, BACHELOR S DEGREE
At the bachelor’s degree level, there are a variety of occupations that offer high wages for working part time. Among them are those in education, healthcare, and business. (See table 2.) The largest occupation in table 2, registered nurses, had the highest wage for part-time workers: just under $37 per hour. It also had the most workers in 2014, more than 2.7 million, and employment in this occupation is projected to surpass 3 million by 2024. All but one of the occupations in table 2 are projected to grow much faster than average. A bachelor’s degree generally prepares you for a variety of occupations in about 4 years of full-time study after high school. But for some of the occupations in the table, you might need to major in a specific discipline, such as medical technology or adult education. And although you typically qualify for the occupations in table 2 with a bachelor’s degree, there may be additional requirements. Management analysts, for example, often need several years of work experience in an occupation related to their area of expertise in order to enter the occupation.
, MASTER S OR HIGHER DEGREE
The occupations in table 3 typically require you to get formal education after a person earns a 4-year college degree. Some of these occupations had mean wages near or above $40 per hour for part-time workers. Of the occupations in table 3, nurse practitioners had the highest wage for part-time workers—almost $48 per hour. This occupation also had the fastest projected employment growth: a 35-percent increase over the decade, which places it among the 10 fastest growing overall. Earning a master’s degree typically takes 1 or 2 years of full-time academic study after a bachelor’s degree. Doctoral or professional degrees generally require you to have at least 3 years of study after a bachelor’s degree. Psychologists typically need to complete an internship to attain competency in the occupation. And many of the occupations require workers to be licensed. VOL. 23 ISSUE 1135

Q: I have been looking for a good job for nearly three months! I recently contacted a company, and his fi rst question was about where I live. I didn’t see what business of his it was, but I told him. He then told me that it was a long drive from my house, and asked if I minded a long commute. I already knew how long the drive was, and I didn’t mind. It might bother me after awhile, but I could handle it for a short time while I keep on looking for a job that’s closer. Do you think he was rude to ask those questions? - Willis, Texas Reader
A: No. I think he wanted to know if that kind of drive was okay with you. Here’s the deal: he’s looking for people who want to work for he company for a very long time, and some people hate to fi ght traffi c. You are bothered by the drive, but you want a job so much that you think an interim job will work for you. The problem is that companies don’t want a short-term employee! He wasn’t rude; he was trying to fi nd out who you are. Q: The company where I work is shutting down this location, and they are moving out of the Houston area. I love my job! My manager said that they are moving all of the jobs to Austin, and that they would give me a moving allowance to go there. She told me that she thinks I would get a promotion if I moved, but she wouldn’t guarantee that. I’ve always wanted to live in Austin, but my husband earns more than I do. What would you do?

A: Tell your husband about the opportunity. He may be able to fi nd a great job there that he would like to pursue. He may be able to transfer with his current company. This all depends on the two of you understanding each other’s priorities and being respectful to each other. There is no right or wrong answer to your question because it all boils down to your own choices. Good luck. Q: I started a new job with a great company, and I have only one problem. The lady who originally hired me has started really ignoring me. I’m worried now because I don’t want her to fi re me. How should I handle this? - Houston, Texas Reader
A: Always be friendly to her (and your other coworkers,) but realize that she may have a lot on her plate. I would probably go directly to her and ask if you’re doing a good job, and if she can give you some pointers.. Q: I have a nose piercing. Should I leave it out for an interview?

GETTING RID OF THE CAR
STOP SPENDING COMPLETELY?
Dear Dave,
Dear Dave,
How do you sell a vehicle with a lien amount that’s higher than the actual value of the car?
My mom and dad are following your advice, and they are working hard to get out of debt. I was wondering, is it okay to buy things while you’re paying off the debt you already have?
Michael
Leslie
Dear Michael, First, you need to find a way to cover the difference between the amount of the lien and what you can get for the car. Let’s say the car is worth $12,000, and you owe $15,000. That would leave you $3,000 short. The bank holds the title, so unless you give them the payoff amount of $15,000 you’re not getting the title. The easiest and simplest way would be if someone buys the car for $12,000, and you had $3,000 on hand to make up the difference. If you don’t have the money to make up the difference, you could go to a local bank or credit union and borrow the remaining $3,000. I really hate debt, but being $3,000 in the hole is a lot better than being $15,000 in the hole. Then, you could turn around and quickly pay back the $3,000 you borrowed. You’d give the total amount owed to the bank, they would give you the title, and you would sign it over to the new owner. Hope this helps! —Dave

APRIL 6, 2018
Dear Leslie, I’m glad you’re paying attention to the finances around your house. Of course, there are some things you must have. We call these “necessities.” Most things are not necessities, though. If your air conditioning breaks down, or you have car repairs, those are things you must spend money on to fix. Things like new furniture, vacations, and eating at restaurants are not necessities. They’re things you might want, but they’re not necessary — especially when you’re trying to pay off debt. I always recommend people take a hard look at their priorities, and remember there’s a difference between wanting something and needing something to survive. It can be hard, and it may mean everyone has to go without a few things they want for a while. But if your parents are serious about getting out of debt, they’ll do it. And it really won’t take all that long. Great question, Leslie! —Dave

Four Tips for Graduates Who Want to Clarify Their Career Direction
i need a
JOB
- Tracy Fitzpatrick -
Graduation season is here. Are you one of those grads who will be celebrating the completion of your degree while simultaneously dreading the inevitable question “What are you doing after graduation?” Do you feel overwhelmed and confused about how to move forward in the work world? Too often, when job seekers look online or ask career professionals for help in clarifying their professional goals, they are given generic assessment tests or referred to job market data or job sites-none of which are that helpful in figuring out what’s a good fit for YOU. Here’s a different approach--one that begins by tuning in to who you are. If you’re willing to put in a bit of reflection time, you will discover that you already know a lot about the qualities you want in your career and in your life. Here are four ways to get started: #1. OBSERVE YOUR ALIVENESS EACH DAY. Make notes about what brings you alive even just a little bit. “Aliveness” is your sense of engagement and interest. What piques your curiosity? What draws your attention over the course of each day? What gives you even a small boost of energy because it’s fun or interesting?
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/expert/Tracy_Fitzpatrick/898759
Often, small things in life bring us alive, yet they can easily be ignored if we don’t pay attention. Perhaps there’s an interesting blog post we read all the way through, a conversation that engages us, a TV show that brings us to tears, an invigorating walk or a calming yoga class. Once you notice what taps your vitality, ask what about this experience has brought you alive and caught your interest. Maybe it is the activity itself--for example, you love to read, be physically active or talk one-on-one with other people. Maybe it’s the topic--you will watch anything about film making or world history, for instance. Perhaps it’s the setting-those quiet times sittingin a café are perfect for you or the people--you get charged by your friend’s sense of humor or your teacher’s thoughtful questioning. When you imagine your future career, which fields or jobs spark your curiosity and make you want to know more?
54
APRIL 6, 2018
Look carefully at these day-to-day
experiences and after a few days or weeks, you will start noticing patterns. One person is fueled by her creativity--the art project or the new recipe. Another enjoys connecting with others in meaningful conversations. Another finds a sense of belonging as a member of a sports team or the school newspaper. Note to self: these are the activities, processes, environments or topics that engage you! #2. YOU CAN REFLECT ABOUT PAST EXPERIENCES OF ALIVENESS AS WELL. Often, peak moments in your life say a lot about what you really value. Close your eyes and imagine times when life was especially sweet and rewarding. Re-enter those memories with all your senses. Then jot down some notes about what made these experiences so fulfilling. #3. YOU ALSO WANT TO REFLECT ON YOUR STRENGTHS. Make a list of six to eight accomplishments, big or small and in any arena. Ask yourself what it took from you to accomplish each of these. List the skills, character traits and areas of knowledge and experience you tapped in to in order to achieve this result. Dig deeper to go beyond the generalities. For example, if you list “study skills,” elaborate on that more. Maybe your study skills include memorization, project planning, synthesizing material or good writing. Go beyond “I’m good with people;” instead, describe how you listen, reflect back what you hear, provide validation and appreciation or empathize. Look back over this list and see which strengths appear multiple times. Do you enjoy using these capacities of yours? There is magic in identifying a strength that you really enjoy using. #4. FINALLY, REFLECT ON WHAT YOU YEARN FOR. As you approach graduation, you may be grieving aspects of college or graduate school that have meant the most to you. Does that tell you something about what you yearn for in this next phase of life? Those yearnings can be painful but also full of information about what you wish for. Perhaps you are yearning for more travel like you enjoyed during a semester abroad or for the sense of community you have had in your sorority or on student council. These exercises require that you take some quiet moments to ponder, a practice that goes against the cultural norms of constant doing and always
being connected to technology. If you buck that norm for a few moments each day and take time for deliberate reflection, useful discoveries about yourself will emerge in just a few weeks. A cautionary note: Don’t be shocked if you notice a lot of fear and self-doubt when you tune in to yourself. We all have those negative voices constantly yakking in our minds, and that anxious, insecure chatter usually gets louder when we face a big transition. These Inner Critics or Gremlins, as coaches like to call them, can undermine anyone’s hopefulness and confidence and thus must be managed if a person is to come across as a capable, secure job applicant. Remember: don’t believe everything you think. Usually those negative thoughts grab on to a tiny grain of truth and inflate it until we feel inadequate and worthless, which, of course, we are not. So be discerning by asking yourself what the grain of truth is and what is not true about those critical thoughts. Put the positive insights about yourself together and you have a lot more information about the qualities you seek at work and in life-your values, interests, strengths and wishes. The next step is to follow your curiosity and gather information about those jobs and fields of interest. You will do research and talk to professional contacts. As you proceed, use the tuning-in tools you have become good at to choose a more specific path that could lead to those qualities and then develop a step-by-step plan for getting there. Your goal: to land a job that you believe is a stepping stone to your dream career. Your first job out of school is not likely to fulfill your every dream, but if it puts you on the road to enhancing relevant skills and getting good experience, then you are on your way! Even if you change direction-which, of course many 20-somethings do-as you learn more about yourself and the professional world, you now know how to steer using your own internal compass. Congratulations! Tracy Fitzpatrick is a career and life coach with 15 years’ experience, three certifications in coaching and three in personal branding.
