Career planning for high schoolers Elka Torpey
“I’ve always had a pretty clear idea of what I want to do,” says Megan Lovely, a high
school senior who hopes to become a director someday. She’s already taking steps toward her career goal by interning with her school drama teacher, acting, and applying to colleges. If you’re still in high school, you may not be as sure of your vocation as Lovely is of hers. But, like Lovely, you can start thinking about—and planning for—your future before graduation. “Start exploring what you want to do when you’re a freshman,” says Mark Danaher, a career counselor at Newington High School in Newington, Connecticut. “The high school years go very quickly.” Most people need some preparation before they’re ready for the workforce, and planning should begin long before it’s time to start a career. This could include taking technical courses during high school or, after graduating, attending a college or university to earn a certificate or a degree. Knowing what type of career preparation you need begins with thinking about what type of career you want. This article helps high school students plan for careers. This first section talks about exploring your interests. The second section, available in the February 26th issue of JobsSparx, highlights the importance of internships, jobs, and other opportunities for getting experience. The third section, available in the March 4th issue of JobSparx, describes some education or training options, both in high school and afterward.
Explore your interests
High school is a great time to start thinking about careers. “All your life you’ve been asked what you want to do when you grow up,” says Steve Schneider, a school counselor at Sheboygan South High School in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. “In high school, you start to work towards making that happen.” Many high schoolers don’t yet know what they want to do. And school counselors say that’s perfectly fine. In fact, students are likely to change their minds multiple times, perhaps even after they enter the workforce. And some of tomorrow’s careers might not exist today. Settling on just one occupation in high school isn’t necessary. But looking into the types of careers you might like can help set you up for success. “My feeling is that high school students don’t have to know the exact career they want,” says Danaher, “but they should know how to explore careers and put time into investigating them and learning about their skills and interests.”
Learn about yourself
Understanding what you enjoy—and what you’re good at—is the first step in exploring careers, say school counselors. “If you don’t know what you want to do, the question is, ‘What do you like to learn about?’” Schneider says. “If you really like science, what do you enjoy about it—the lab work, the research?” Use the answers to those questions to identify careers that may have similar tasks. High school junior Kate Sours, for example, loves spending time with kids as a babysitter and enjoys helping people. So she focused on those two interests when she began considering potential careers. It’s important to think about what you like to do, say school counselors, because work will eventually be a big part of your life. “The whole purpose of thinking about careers is so that

Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY
Ethical Dilemma
Raising The Rent
Dear Dave,
Dear Dave,
I work an extra job part-time for a retail store chain while I’m getting out of debt. I like my job, except for h a v i n g t o p i t c h t h e s t o r e ’s c r e d i t card to customers. Like you, I believe debt is a bad thing. Still, my bosses are putting more and more pressure o n m e t o s e l l t h e c a r d s . I t ’s b e e n b o t h e r i n g m e a l o t l a t e l y, a n d I w a s wondering if you have any advice for my ethical dilemma?
I have two small duplexes in Idaho that I rent for $400 a month, each on one-year leases. The rent is about $50 to $75 below similar units in the area. The tenants in all four places are great, so how do you know when—or if—you should raise the rent? If you raise the rent, how do you keep good relationships with your tenants?
Evette
Dear Evette, If you’ve been in the business for very long, I guess you’ve discovered that most retail stores make more money on credit than the sale of merchandise. In my mind, you’ve got two types of integrity that are pulling a t y o u . Yo u r p e r s o n a l i n t e g r i t y w a n t s you to do a good job for yourself a n d y o u r e m p l o y e r, b u t i t ’s a l s o telling you that credit cards are bad products. That makes you feel like you’ve signed up to sell something that you don’t believe in.
Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.
Yo u w o u l d n ’ t w a n t s o m e o n e w o r k i n g for you who wouldn’t follow your instructions, and I wouldn’t want someone working for me who doesn’t believe in what they’ve been hired to do. For the sake of your own i n t e g r i t y, I w o u l d s u g g e s t t h a t y o u find another part-time job. If you feel this strongly about the issue, sooner or later it will start to affect your performance and attitude—both at work and at home. Hang on long enough to land another job before you quit. Then, be professional when you turn in your notice. Despite what lots of people say these days, there are plenty of part-time jobs out there! —Dave

Te r e s a
D e a r Te r e s a , My advice with rental properties is to r a i s e t h e r e n t a l i t t l e b i t e a c h y e a r. Yo u w a n t t o b e f a i r a n d a f f o r d a b l e for your tenants, but you don’t want them thinking the rate is locked i n f o r e v e r. A s a b u s i n e s s o w n e r, i f you don’t have small, manageable increases on a regular basis, you’ll look up in four or five years and realize you’re losing money because your rent is way below market value. Then, if you implement a big rate hike out of nowhere your tenants will have a fit. After that, you could be looking at empty properties. When it comes time to renew the leases, try explaining to them that you’ve looked around in the market and other very comparable units are going for $450 or more, but that you appreciate them and what good tenants they are. Then, propose signing the new lease at $410 or $420. Don’t raise it to full market value. In most cases, this kind of approach will keep both parties h a p p y.
As a landlord, you’ll be able to retain quality tenants and make more m o n e y. A s a r e n t e r, y o u ’ l l h a v e t h e comfort of knowing you rent isn’t g o i n g t o s u d d e n l y j u m p s k y - h i g h . I t ’s a win-win! —Dave

S Y A P by Christine Wardle
If your 10 year high school reunion is coming up, the high school experience today is deďŹ nitely not the same as you remember. Gone are the days of basic metal shop and home economics. Classes have become more focused on preparing students for future careers. For the past decade, Texas schools have worked with Federal guidelines to improve the opportunities secondary students have to learn practical skills that will help them as they enter higher education and the workforce.
Before the CTE Program, students could earn dual credits with Lone Star College in Science, Fine Arts and Math. They now are able to not only do that, but earn career licensing in advanced CTE classes. After two years of additional vocational training and certification after high school, these students are ready to enter the job field into high-paying mid-skill careers.
Closer to home, Independent school districts (ISD) in the Houston area are putting career curriculum to work in positive ways for middle school and high school students. Courses for secondary education range from Aviation Operations at Sterling Aviation High School in the Houston ISD to the International Business Academy at Klein Forest High School in Klein ISD, Veterinary Medical Applications to Law Enforcement and Fashion Marketing.
The CTE program allows students to see how math, science and reading are important to real-world careers. A handson environment in these classes accelerates learning and comprehension, as well as practical experience that can be taken directly to the job. If students continue to a four-year college, they have already had training and exposure to materials that give them a leg up in their school work. They also develop soft skills and experience that employers are looking for.
All school districts in the state of Texas are required to offer at least one Career Technical Education (CTE) endorsement. These endorsements include: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), Business and Industry, Public Services, Arts and Humanities and Multidisciplinary Studies. Underneath each of these endorsements are career clusters that relate to the general field of study. For instance, under Arts and Humanities, the cluster Arts, A/V Technology & Communications exists. Within that cluster, classes include Career Prep, Vol. 21 Issue 1027 Animation, Fashion Design,26, and Professional Communications. February 19 - February 2016

The Klein ISD website (www.kleinisd.net) states, "CTE allows students to see the relevance of their academic preparation to their future career goals. Our programs of study include coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant career technical content." JobSparx spoke to graduating seniors at Klein Oak High School and Deborah Bronner-Westerduin, Assistant Director of Career and Technical Education Programs (CTE) at Klein Independent School District about the CTE program and how
it is positively affecting students in the district. Because they offer all five CTE Endorsements to students, Klein ISD is unique. There are more than 100 courses available in 15 different Career Clusters. The district uses workforce data in their program planning, so it is evolving constantly as employment needs change in Texas.
KLEIN ISD
There are four clusters in High School where a student can earn their state license as a senior. These clusters are Cosmetology, Criminology, Family / Consumer Sciences and Pharmacy Technician. Students may also receive certifications upon graduation, and gain potential employment while continuing their education.
1928 The present boundaries of Klein ISD were established, with a total enrollment of 582 students.
Klein ISD also has three programs available at the Intermediate School level. These classes include: Professional Communications, Principles of Human Services and Tech System Data Entry (TSDE). One of the largest growth industries in Texas is healthcare. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Houston area employment in the Education and Health Services supersector added 17,700 jobs between 2014 and 2015. This is a 5% increase overall. Nationally, employment in this industry was only up 2.6%. The largest job growth in this sector occurred in ambulatory health care services and hospitals. Because of this trend, another CTE category was added in 2015. The new World Health classes include: Medical Microbiology, Pathological Physiology and Anatomy / Physiology. Anatomy / Physiology is also an advanced dual credit course, earning college credit. As part of the career education path for Klein ISD Students, HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) has groups on each of the four Klein campuses that are very involved in competitions and advanced healthcare education. As we talked, Ms. Bronner-Westerduin explained, " Klein ISD is deeply entrenched in HOSA. One hundredeleven Klein ISD students in HOSA have advanced to national competitions, including a National winning team. Forty-one additional students in TSA/HOSA/FHA received silver medals, equivalent to second place, at these events." There are multiple types of events that HOSA participants can compete in, including knowledge tests, medical spelling, pharmacology, medical innovations and the HOSA Bowl. Bronner-Westerduin also spoke about the hidden career paths within the medical cluster. For art students, "there is a high need for medical illustrators," she told JobSparx. "There are so many jobs in the medical industry - the business behind the scenes." Some of the careers she mentioned included Hospitality, Finance and Transportation. Continued on page 62

Internships are sometimes hard to find, and finding a paid internship can be like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. More and more companies are paying interns a normal wage because they are using the internship as a really long interview. Companies love the opportunity to see your work ethic and how you handle yourself on the job. Interns love being able to work at a company with the goal of joining them as a regular employee. Make sure that you research the company before joining them because there are some tricky situations out there. If it is paying straight commission or in someone’s house or no one will answer questions about what you will be doing, it isn’t an internship. It’s something, but it’s not an internship. After you’ve found a great company where you might be able to secure a job after graduation, go for it. The next step is to make yourself essential so that they want you to stay or come back. How do you do that? Here are a dozen ways to shine as an intern.
Be On time. Always. There are no excuses
for being late that anyone wants to hear. If you say traffic, hey, there’s always traffic. You need to leave earlier. If you just couldn’t get to bed last night, don’t tell us. Just be on time. Always.
AN E B TO Be There: Absences are just ridiculous when T N you have such a short time to impress. Don’t WA party all weekend and call in sick on Monday. Don’t text to say that you’ll be late or absent. Don’t call extra early and leave a voice mail. Take ownership of the problem and follow the rules. If you are going to go somewhere other than work, don’t post it on social media.
Be Positive.
? N R E T IN
No negativity. No tantrums. Oscar the Grouch is the only grouch that people love. Even Oscar might be hard to manage if you had to work with him every day. Don’t complain. Don’t complain about office issues, personal issues or the food. Complainers drive companies nuts.
Be polite. Don’t discuss anything that is
too personal. Remember the old saying that one doesn’t discuss religion, sexual orientation or politics. You can cause more problems with these subjects than any others. Watch your language, too. Cursing is not acceptable.
Be careful about your new friends. Some-
times they are making quick friends with you to pull you into an ongoing argument that they have with management. If they start badmouthing managers, run away. Don’t gossip or Vol.to 21people Issue 1027who do. listen

standing who does what for whom, you can begin asking questions that help you do an even better job. When people like you, they are going to be very helpful. If you are invited to a party where alcohol is served, by all means go. If you are over 21, have a drink. One. You don’t want to be the intern that gets talked about for years and years because you were overserved and acted irresponsibly.
Be a team player.
Don’t act as if you are just there temporarily. When you talk about the company, be possessive: it’s our company. Jump into every assignment and do your very best. Continue to research the industry so that you’ll be knowledgeable.
Be willing. If you are asked to do

thing and be alert. If you are addicted to checking messages and texting, stop right now!! Using earbuds and playing with your phone are disastrous to your career.
Be dressed appropriately. You
are at work. You are not at the beach. If you think flip flops reflect your personality, wear them when you get home. Watch what your coworkers wear and follow their lead. Clothes that are too tight or revealing can label you.
Be awake. It seems silly to even say it, but sometimes a late night and early morning can leave us all sleepy. Do whatever you need to be awake and alert because sleeping at your desk is not going to win you a permanent job!
Be the best. This is your chance to shine and show everyone what a great asset you are.

when you go to the workforce, you wake up in the morning and look forward to going to work,” says Julie Hartline, a school counseling consultant at Cobb County public schools in Smyrna, Georgia.
GENERAL
Identify possible careers
Once you’ve thought about the subjects and activities you like best, the next step is to look for careers that put those interests to use. If you love sports, for example, you might consider a career as a gym teacher, recreational therapist, or coach. If you like math, a career as a cost estimator, accountant, or budget analyst might be a good fit. But those aren’t the only options for people interested in sports or math. There are hundreds of occupations, and most of them involve more than one skill area. School counselors, teachers, and parents can help point you in the direction of occupations that match your interests and skills. School counselors, for example, often have tools that they use to link interests and skills with careers. Free online resources, such as My Next Move, also help with career exploration. Another approach to identifying potential career interests is to consider local employers and the types of jobs they have. There are many jobs in manufacturing and healthcare near the high school where Schneider works, for example, so he often talks to students about the range of career options in those fields—from occupations that require a 6-week course after high school to those that require a bachelor’s or higher degree. Exploring careers that combine working with children and helping people led Sours to nursing. She’s now considering working in a hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit or pediatrics department. Sours notes the importance of broadening, rather than narrowing, possibilities when studying careers. “Keep an open mind,” she says, “because with some work, you might think, ‘Oh, that’s a nasty job.’ But when you start exploring it, you might discover, ‘This is cool. I might want to do this.’”
Do your research
After identifying possible occupations, you’ll want to learn more about them. Resources such as Career Outlook and the Occupational Outlook Handbook can help you get started. Other sources of information include career-day programs, mentoring, and opportunities offered through your school to learn more about the world of work. Talking directly to workers can help you get information about what they do. If you don’t know workers in occupations that interest you, ask people such as parents, friends, or teachers for their contacts. Some schools have business liaisons or coordinators who help put students in touch with employers—and school counselors can assist, too. These networking efforts might pay off later, even if opportunities aren’t available now. After you’ve found workers who are willing to help, talk to them on the phone, by email, or through online forums. Meet with them in person for informational interviews to learn more about what they do. Or ask if you can shadow them on the job to see what their daily work is like. To find out if you’ll really like an occupation, school counselors say firsthand experience is indispensable. Sours, for example, shadowed her aunt, who works in a hospital as a physical therapist. Sours liked the hospital environment so much that she attended a week-long nursing camp, where she got to see the many tasks that nurses do. “I had so much fun, and I learned so much,” she says about both experiences.

Job Hunting & Social Media - Important Tips To Know
Many companies are using social media as part of their background checks. Much more caution needs to be made before you post pictures and texts you don’t want any employer to read. by Robin Ryan Author of “60 Seconds & You’re Hired”
Jordan had long “forgotten” about some of his drunk and partying posts on his Facebook account since he didn’t use it much anymore. Unfortunately, the prospective employer went to look BEFORE he hired him and those posts lost Jordan that job.
were reasons as to WHY the applicants did NOT get the job. These were:
It’s not just teens and twenty-somethings getting negative publicity. It seems everyone is not thinking about what they post. Openly discussing about your DUI, rehab, cancer treatments or divorce problems can be an easy deterrent for a hiring employer. Putting up very sexy photographs is a major no-no. Bragging that you skipped work for some personal fun day or ranting about your company or boss is landing job applicants in hot water. Sadly, the individual isn’t even aware that it was his or her Facebook posts or Instagram photos that are lengthening their job hunt.
Applicant posted information about themselves drinking or using drugs (41%).
The number of employers passing on job applicants because of the candidates’ social media content continues to rise. Over 50% of employers surveyed in a March 2014 Harris Poll stated they check the Internet and Facebook before they extend job offers. More employers each day are beginning to “LOOK” online before they hire. Be aware that most times what you post may not be private. A recent Society for Human Resource Management survey on social media and hiring noted that the following
Applicant posted provocative or inappropriate photos or similar information (cited by 46% of respondents).
Applicant bad-mouthed his or her previous company or a fellow employee (36%). Applicant showed poor communication skills (32%). Applicant posted discriminatory comments (28 %). Applicant posted confidential information from a previous employer (24%). Many companies are using social media as part of their background checks. Much more caution needs to be made before you post pictures and texts you don’t want any employer to read. Go back through your posts and your friends’ party pictures. Then delete anything that could cause an employer to find anything objectionable about hiring you.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY
The mikeroweWORKS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes hard work, supports the skilled trades, and challenges the persistent belief that a four-year degree is automatically the best path to take. The Foundation awards scholarships to men and women who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for mastering a specific trade. Our focus is on supporting the specific skilled trades that help close the country’s skills gap and those that represent the significant bulk of our unfilled jobs. The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in scholarships to schools around the country, including Midwest Technical Institute, Tulsa Welding School, The Refrigeration School and Universal Technical Institute. One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”

ASK DIANA Why don’t I get calls? I don’t have much experience. I have had my resume on all of the websites and I have sent them to every single ad that I’ve seen. I don’t get any answers. Why?
If you had to start from scratch and wanted to save $15,000 dollars of your own money, how long do you think it would take you to save this much money?????????????????? -Richmond, Texas Reader
-Tomball, Texas Reader
A: The best way to save money is to A: I’m guessing that you are simply not qualified for most of the jobs where you have sent resumes if you are sending to “ever y single ad.” I don’t believe I am qualified to be a welder or a truck driver or a brain surgeon, and I would send a resume only to targeted companies where I have a chance of doing the job. Be more selective.
I quit college… I should never have quit college last year. I was made a great job offer and took it before I consulted with anyone else. It turned out that I didn’t like the job, and I really wasn’t a good fit for the company. I was fired, and now I have no idea what I want to do. My mom and dad say that they won’t pay for me to go back to college because I should have asked them before I quit. I know that I need that degree, but I also know that I won’t be able to go back to school without some help. Any advice? -Houston, Texas Reader
A: Almost everyone makes decisions that are hard to explain. You really should have consulted with your parents before accepting the job, but even if you had, it would have made little difference. They would have either agreed or disagreed, and you would have either agreed or disagreed with them. Dealing with the here and now, you need to get back in college, and you need to decide what you have to do to accomplish that. Call your college and find out if there are any scholarships available. If you check out the resources, and really try to find out what you can do to help pay for it, you can go to your parents with a plan. If you have not apologized to them, do it now. Tell them that it was a mistake that you certainly regret. I think that your diligence would convince them that you are very, very serious about it, and they may come through with part of the cost. Good luck. What is the best way to save money?

In a panel interview, we met with seniors Isabel, Allison, Davis and Vincent of Klein Oak High School, one of four high schools in Klein ISD. Each one is participating in a different area of CTE, and discussed with us their future plans and how the Klein ISD CTE Program helped them make a career choice. WHAT
WERE
SOME
OF
THE
THINGS
YOU DREAMT ABOUT BEING WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER? Isabel is a member of HOSA, and is planning a career in nursing, specializing in Labor and Delivery.
A. In second grade, we did a career project where we told about what we wanted to do when we grew up. I mentioned that I wanted to be a vet, and my teacher told me about Texas A&M. That's how I found out about it, because I never had family members who went there. V. When I was younger, I was really interested in animals, and would watch lots of shows on the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, and wanted to be a marine biologist at first. I also grew up in Florida, so I was around the beach and the ocean. That was originally what I wanted to do, but when I started High School and what I wanted to do, I got interested in engineering. I am doing well in math, and thought that would translate better for a career for me.
Davis has been a member of the Klein Oak Computer Science UIL Competition Team for the last 4 years. He would like to enter the ďŹ eld of Software Engineering.
I. I remember I used to play Leap Frog games, and my favorite one was where I would learn the names of all the bones and the muscles, and I would do that for hours. Throughout middle school, I wanted to become an aerospace engineer for some reason, but then I figured out you need to be good at math for that. So, that was out for me. I think my freshman year is when my Aunt and Uncle moved to the Woodlands. My aunt is an anesthesiologist and my uncle is an orthopedic surgeon, and I have had more contact with them than I did in the past. They have really helped me. I asked them questions about their work all the time, shadowed them, and then my sophomore year I began taking medical based classes here at Klein Oak. This year I am taking Anatomy/Physiology and Pharmacology, and that's helped me to become more confident about where I want to be.
Vincent is a member of the AFJROTC at Klein Oak. He plans to enter the Corps program at Texas A&M, and majoring in Industrial Engineering.
D. As a child I wanted to go into art. But in middle school, I really liked math and would be in competitions with math club. When I got into computer science, I found that a lot of the math skills had carried over, and it's pretty much applied mathematics. Computer science has competitions as well, so as a competitive person I really liked going to those. Computer Science really appealed to me more compared to what I was thinking about pursuing. A. We have a Vet Tech team through our FFA chapter, and we have UIL competitions where we have to memorize 150 different types of breeds, 90 different instruments and then a practicum with basic skills. You have to present to a judge
and you are scored on what you know. I have had firsthand experience at work that showed me how CTE has helped me. My boss usually tries to hire 2-3 high school kids over the summer, and let them learn on the job. Some of them come in not knowing what a syringe is, or a vaccine is, but with my prior knowledge, I am actually training kids my age to work at a vet clinic. I am able to be a step ahead of them because they don’t have these programs available to them. V. AFJROTC has given me an extra step, especially the for the corps program at A&M, because it is an introduction to the military lifestyle, and what it can be like. They have summer programs, called summer field training, where JROTC Programs from all over Texas are selected and sent to a college campus. It’s a little more hard core, and they introduce you to what it’s actually going to be like. That has prepared me for what will happen when I enter A&M. I feel that experience, the volunteer hours, awards and certifications from the program can help me have the edge at Texas A&M and eventually in an officer position in the Navy. I’ll admit that at first it wasn’t something I wanted to do. The people I met here, especially the instructors, helped me to see that this is something I could excel in, and something I wanted to pursue. I am gaining leadership skills, discipline, and there are definitely role models like Sergeant Johnson. I. Klein ISD has definitely helped me get a head start on all my prerequisites that I will need to get into nursing school. Just being in HOSA has helped me a lot. We had a field trip a couple of months ago where all the HOSA people from different schools came. I met people who wanted to be anesthesiologists, physical therapists, and talked with people from different schools about what they want to go into. It helped open my eyes to the diversity of the medical field. I am also taking medical based classes here at Klein Oak. Anatomy & Physiology has been really helpful in giving me confidence in entering the medical field. Going into the class, I was really scared because everyone was telling me ‘You’re going to fail, it’s really hard”. It’s actually my favorite class now, and it’s been a good experience.

I am also taking a pharmacy class where if I take the PCTB test at the end of the year, I can be a pharmacy tech at CVS or another pharmacy and work over the summer. I have definitely gotten a lot of experience that I wouldn’t have if I hadn’t taken those classes. D. There are a bunch of computer science courses here at Klein Oak. They have an introductory one that is PreAP, and that gets you learning about computer science. I am taking independent study classes where I basically create my own project, try to find a problems and solve them using my skills, and by learning new things. I definitely think one of the things that has helped me the most is the UIL Competitions for computer science. Not only do they make me want to improve my skills, but it helps prepare me for the real world. Half of the test is team based, so you’re on a team programming with your classmates, and you will need to interact with other people when you are programming. We also have Zeta Omicron, which is our computer science honor society. They host different events, and have guest speakers from colleges that are heavy into computer science come talk to us about what internships they have, and advice about getting a job.
