Lisa, a program manager called to say “I can’t do it! Robin I’m terrified of trying to negotiate for the salary offer.” It took a lot of coaching and advice that she had nothing to lose if she followed the strategies I laid out. She did and was astonished that they conceded quickly and she’s making $8,000 more than they originally offered and she got an extra week of vacation The largest raises you’re likely to ever obtain in your career come when you quit your job and go to work for another employer, but only if you avoid the minefield of mistakes people often make. The Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) just released a rather shocking survey result. It noted that over the course of a person’s career, anyone who did not negotiate for a higher salary every time they started a new job would actually earn $500,000 to $1,000,000 LESS in lifetime income than an individual who was savvy when handling their salary compensation package.

These ten negotiation strategies will enable you to earn more.

1. TRY

10 Ways Earn More $$$ through

Salary

Negotiations

by Robin Ryan, Author of 60 Seconds + You’re Hired

38

JUNE 10, 2016

Most women are afraid to try and by nature devalue themselves. They don’t recognize their full worth in the workplace and rarely demand it. The unemployed typically feel they sit in a difficult spot. They often need the job and the employer knows it. No matter what your situation is, you will increase your take home pay if you negotiate. Employers first offer are typically not their best offer and significantly lower than the amount the employer is willing to pay.

2. KNOW WHAT YOUR SKILLS ARE WORTH Do some research to learn exactly what you should expect to be paid for your VOL. 21 ISSUEeducation, 1043 years of experience, certifi

cations and any special training you pos- fered. Patience here almost always pays sess. Try Glassdoor and Payscale.com, off. both offer free salary surveys that offer detailed information to help you get an 7. DON’T FORGET TO estimate on what you should be earning. NEGOTIATE THE PERKS

3. FOCUS ON THE EMPLOYER’S NEEDS Begin your conversation with the hiring manager, by reselling yourself. Reaffirm the reasons they want you, the skills you’ll bring, and how you’ll solve their problems. Mention your key strengths and experience plus stress how quickly you will be productive. In other words, give them reasons to pay you more.

4. RESTATE YOUR INTEREST A solid way to bridge this negotiation is to say, “I’m really interested in the position. I was a little disappointed that the offer was lower than I expected, especially since I have this experience or these skills (note something specific) and will come up to speed quickly.” Smile, then be quiet and remain quiet while the employer makes the next move.

5. NEGOTIATE TO GET THE MONEY UP FRONT

More vacation can often be negotiated. This is easier for many employers to give out than money. Nicely make your request, stating how much more time off you want. You can reveal what you current vacation level is, and ask if they can meet it or at least offer more vacation than stated. Also, review the medical plan and the deductible and dependent costs. Many companies’ health plans offer lousy coverage with $5,000 to $10,000 deductibles every year. You can argue for a higher salary to compensate for switching medical plans because of these high deductibles. Many companies have been willing to add to salaries for this reason. Additionally, if you or a family member has a chronic illness, thoroughly check out the new company’s insurance plan so you know what is covered and what you will pay so you don’t get any expensive surprises.

8. PRACTICE Think through the negotiation interview. Visualize a successful outcome. Then ask a friend to role-play the interview with you. Defend why you are worth more money and additional perks. Did you convince them? Listen to their feedback. This preparation will decrease your anxiety and increase your confidence and success.

Cash remains king. Promised bonuses, raises, stock options, and reviews in a few months all have a way of never happening down the line. Every dollar you negotiate into the salary base is more money you can spend on things you and your family want. Work toward getting 9. KNOW YOUR the extra money up front. These negoBOTTOM LINE tiations could give you in minutes what would take years to achieve with raises. Only you can decide when the offer is too low. There will be other offers, but they

may be weeks down the road. Never ever bluff. Offers can be withdrawn when a job hunter says, “$66,000 is as low as I will accept.” Be prepared to keep looking. Sometimes that is the right move for you. Decide on the lowest figure you can reasonably accept, one that will cover your bills and allow you to concentrate on succeeding in the job and not immediately start looking for another, higherpaying one.

10. GET AN EMPLOYMENT LETTER You can offer to write it or the employer can, but be sure the employer signs it. This letter should outline all the terms of your employment, covering salary, signing bonuses, stock options, starting date, benefits, and particularly noting anything different from the organization’s normal policies. Too many promises are made and quickly forgotten once you start the job. Get the details in writing so there are no misunderstandings later. People who have failed to do so have suffered when the promised extra week of vacation was “forgotten” once they started. A written agreement protects what you’ve negotiated for. These letters are very common, and it’s wise – and necessary – to obtain one.

6. BE SPECIFIC WHEN IT COUNTS

The employer may ask you what figure you have in mind. Know what you want and state it. Be willing to wait. The hiring manager may say he or she needs to go back and ask their boss to get the additional dollars. If they want you, they’ll be your advocate and almost always come VOL.they 21 ISSUE 1043 back with more than originally of-

O

Thinking about a Green Career in

rganic Growing?

50

JUNE 10, 2016

VOL. 21 ISSUE 1043

Young people are very aware of concerns about climate change and the environment. The problem is translating those concerns into practical education and career choices. However, youthful idealism can be harnessed and even turned into a rewarding life-time career: opportunities in sustainability are growing as the economy picks up.

Organic

Agriculture Job opportunities in agriculture generally are declining, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. But, going on retail growth, organic farming appears to be an exception. That makes sense, because organic agriculture is labor-intensive, and its products are very popular with those who can afford to pay the price premium.

‘WWOOF’ You can do a college course in organic growing, but getting some work experience is probably the best first step, since you need to know whether you actually enjoy the day-to-day work, leaving idealism aside. Some experience is also the best recommendation for getting an entry level job. Luckily there is an international network of organic farms which take volunteers, who work in return for board and lodging. World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) puts volunteers in touch with organic growers, allowing young people to have their first taste of working on a farm. The conditions on different farms vary, and, for example, some provide pocket-money while some do not. The farms are not vetted, although they have to sign up to certain basic requirements, and it is up to the volunteers to make enquiries to their own satisfaction. The experience is likely to be more positive for people who have a like-minded friend to go on the adventure with, as it can be daunting to live and work with a set of wholly new people, in an unfamiliar place.

Training If a spell as a ‘wwoofer’ gives you a taste for the farming life, you can go on to undertake either a college course or farm-based training. An online resource called ‘Beginning Farmers’ contains a wealth of up-to-date information on its blog. There is a section devoted to training opportunities, VOL. 21 ISSUE 1043 many which are specifically including related to organic farming.

Careers It’s hard work to make a living just by organic farming, although it can be done. That’s one reason wwoofing works well: at its best, it helps farmers to survive, as well as giving future farmers a start in the trade. Organic growing is a labor of love, not a career you go into because of high financial rewards. Some families find it easiest to combine a farm with at least one family member having a paid outside role. An organic farmer shouldn’t go hungry, but beyond that, you do need to have a reliable source of money. A farm can provide a family’s living, particularly now, with the popularity of farmers’ markets. They are more profitable when combined with a retail outlet. It could be a seasonal organic vegetable box delivery scheme; a café in the nearest town; or just a stall at the market. It’s good as well to add value with, say, your own brand of pickles or pies, which could become locally famous. There are opportunities for employment as well as selfemployment, but those are often at a basic level, unless you work for one of the larger organic food producers. In whatever role you are involved in the production of organic food, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping to feed people healthily, and preserving a traditional and valuable way of life, that of the small farmer.

Display A Kind Spirit

An Ounce of Prevention…

Dear Dave,

Dear Dave

My mom and dad filed bankruptcy recently and are on a fixed income of $2,200 a month. They gave up their house, and my wife and I helped them find an apartment. We’re also trying to give them other help while they’re getting back on their feet. The problem is, we’re paying off debt and trying to get our own finances in better shape. I think my sister should help out some, too, but I’m not sure how to approach her about this.

Our son is 16, and he just got his first paycheck. He asked us about the best way to manage it, and we’re not sure what to tell him. Do you have any advice?

Randy

Dear Randy, It’s not out of line to ask her to help and then gauge her interest and willingness. I mean, it’s your parents we’re talking about. Still, you can’t force someone to do something they can’t do or simply don’t want to do. Before you approach your sister, you might try working up a monthly budget on your parents. It doesn’t have to be complicated — just a one-page document showing their situation. Let her see that mom and dad are struggling right now, and suggest that you both chip in a little each month until they’re back on their feet financially. Don’t point fingers or make accusations, because that will ruin things in a hurry. Family should always try to pull together in times like this, Randy. In most cases, things like this work out fine and family bonds become even stronger. — Dave

Anonymous

Dear Anonymous, Congratulations on a big moment in your son’s life! I’m sure he’s proud, and I’m glad he has parents who want to teach him how to grow into a financially responsible young man. I think giving is a really big deal at this age. I’d recommend putting 10 percent toward your church or a good, local charity. It’s very important to teach kids about the spiritual and financial benefits of being a giver. The remaining 90 percent you might split evenly between savings and spending in the beginning. You can always go a little heavier on the savings portion if there’s a concrete goal, like college or a car, in mind. The process of thinking ahead and setting goals is always a good exercise, too. The goal here, in addition to teaching him the value and benefits or work, is to build the muscles of his character. Financially speaking, as parents, we should want our children to grow to be givers, savers and wise, careful spenders. If they become all three of these when they’re young, they won’t be financially irresponsible adults later! —Dave

Q: I have a question, but you may think it’s the same as other questions that you’ve got before. I’m going to an interview, but it’s not for a company that makes you wear dresses or suits. It’s not a formal company at all. The job is not the kind where that I see people asking about in your blog thing. Do I still have to dress up to interview with them? I think maybe a pair of jeans will be okay. Do you think that would work?

interviewing someone from your home state many years ago. She was shocked when I directed her to the Museum District because she didn’t know tha t we had museums. We do. We ha ve a lot of museums. We ha ve a whole District f or them.

Q: My boyfriend is going to tr y to arrange an inter view for me with his compan y. I feel ver y ner vous a bout this for a lot of reasons. First, what if they don’t hire me? Or what if the y hire me just because of him? Wha t if I can’t do the work or don’t like it? We plan to get married soon, and I don’t want to put his job into d a n g e r. A: No. Even if the company is not a formal one, you owe them a certain amount of respect and should dress a c c o r d i n g l y. Yo u w o u l d n ’ t w e a r a suit – that would be too much. BEGINNING A CAREER AS A

Grocery

Merchandiser

62

JUNE 10, 2016

VOL. 21 ISSUE 1043

B

eing a grocery merchandiser is similar to being an independent contractor who is working in a grocery store. There are guidelines set by the store and by the merchandiser’s company. A merchandisers’ primary duty is to stock their company products on the shelves of the store, or stores, that they are assigned to. They are hired by a corporation to represent the company and the product in the store. They are the face of the company that the store and its managers see on a regular basis. Merchandisers are product-focused. They are given support by a sales representative for their area who will review sales numbers, obtain display space and negotiate shelf allocation. A merchandiser will have to interact with store personnel, such as department and store managers on a regular basis. The store will monitor the products stocked for any problems, such as out of stock products and will meet with the merchandiser to resolve the issue.

Why you

should consider merchandising

Merchandisers have flexible hours depending on when the store needs serviced and when shipments arrive. They have to be self-motivated, organized and flexible. Merchandisers often work alone, with management possibly hours away, so being able to complete needed tasks without direct supervision is a requirement. Hours are assigned on an as-needed basis, with jobs ranging from part-time hours in the teens, to a full forty hours a week. Benefits are determined by each company. Many merchandisers work a flexible schedule, coming when the store opens on one day and a few hours later the next day. Finding merchandising jobs Finding a merchandising job can be more challenging than a traditional job search. To begin with, several merchandiser positions are filled with store employees VOL. 21 ISSUE 1043

who are looking for some additional income. The word spreads about positions and often employees are found by referral. Even if you are not a store employee, it’s possible to get a merchandising position if you are diligent and know where to look. Local classifieds are often used by smaller companies that offer fewer hours. These jobs are usually used as additional income for already established merchandisers or store employees. Online websites are a good way to find bigger merchandising jobs with wellknown companies, such as Kraft, Budweiser or Frito-Lay. Websites will have job postings and areas to fill out an application for positions in your area.

The secret

to finding a

merchandising position

The best way to find the good merchandiser position is to talk to a store receiver.

The receiver is the person who checks merchandiser product into the store. They scan the product in and review the invoices. They know all of the merchandisers and are usually the first person in the store to know when a merchandising position opens up. They often recommend people to companies who are looking for replacements. To work with the receiver to find a position, choose a store in an area you are willing to work in. Ask to see the receiver. The later morning hours are preferable, as most deliveries come in before 11am. Introduce yourself and explain to them that you are interested in a merchandising position. Let them know if you have any experience, either merchandising or in retail work. Keep it short, give them your information and let it go. Finding a job with flexible hours and good pay is a challenge in the best of times. With these tips, you can be confident in your ability to secure a great job as a grocery merchandiser, which is the first step to a long and profitable career.
