My Career:

Web Operations Engineer WHAT DO YOU DO? I provide technical support for the Web developers who manage two of my company’s most popular websites. Whenever the developers run into a problem they can’t fix, I help them find solutions. Every problem is different, so I need to understand all the systems that make the websites work: databases, programming, networking, and lots more. By comparison, a Web developer usually only needs to know Web programming but will know it better than I do. I also maintain the computer servers that host the two websites. These websites offer software applications that enhance our products. And to keep up with user demand and to accommodate new visitors, I have to improve how the current systems work and add more servers, sort of like remodeling and expanding a house. To help me add new servers, I develop automation tools that act like a printing press. For example, I can bundle into a single template all the tools, settings, and data a server needs to work with one of our websites, and then easily install the template on as many servers as that website needs. DESCRIBE YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND. When I started my bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, I didn’t know what my career would be. But I was sure I wanted to work with computers. Computer engineering comes in two “flavors”: hardware (electrical engineering) and software (computer science). I concentrated in computer hardware for my bachelor’s degree but switched to software for my master’s degree because I was already working with software as a systems administrator. The most important things you learn in school come not from the material but from the professors’ experience in the field. They can provide examples of real problems, their thinking process, and how they found a solution. But no textbook or course can keep up with how fast the industry is changing. Little of what I learned 5 years ago is still applicable today. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB OUT OF COLLEGE? I started as a systems administrator in an internship I discovered at one of my school’s career fairs. I was eventually hired full time. I dealt with a variety of basic problems that took minutes to solve. For example, if a customer had trouble accessing the server, I might have solved the problem with a simple password reset. The problems I deal with today can take hours to solve, but that experience helped me build a foundation of knowledge that I still use. The best way to encounter more problems and learn more solutions is by getting experience. In technology, there is no one solution— but there certainly are wrong ways of approaching a

38

JUNE 3, 2016

problem. My job is to find the most efficient solution. HOW DID YOU GET THIS JOB? I’ve been in my field for 5 years now, so I have met a lot of professional systems administrators. One of these contacts in my network recommended me for an open position at the company where he works. WHAT ELSE LED YOU HERE? I’ve been working with computers since I was young. I started my first computer job when I was 15 years old. I was passionate about the work, so I decided to pursue a computer engineering degree. After my first job out of college, I worked for a national media company as an associate systems engineer. The work was similar to what I did in my first job, but I also had the opportunity to take on more problems. I was then promoted to a systems engineer doing even more difficult work. Two years later, when I no longer felt challenged by my job, I joined a start-up company. At this start-up company, I had more responsibilities and less help. I had to learn to be more creative with my solutions to reduce costs and time. Five months later, I joined the company I now work for. WHAT’S BEEN ONE OF YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES? When I started working remotely from home, I found it difficult to communicate with my coworkers. I couldn’t walk to their cubicle or talk over lunch. I mostly read emails. It was affecting my work. For example, I would have trouble figuring out whom to approach for help with a specific problem because I knew little about my coworkers or what they could do. I had to put in a lot of effort to know them better. Whenever I went to the main office, I introduced myself and socialized. I also set up a chat room for us to talk online during the day and after hours. WHAT’S YOUR BEST ADVICE? Job experience and networking are crucial. Working as an intern while pursuing a degree will help you land your first job. Once you have a bachelor’s degree, experience usually trumps education. Networking will help you throughout your career. You can learn new things from the people you meet and get your name recognized, for example. The work is demanding and, especially early on in your career, you might be on call. You have to really want to do this. Professionals in my field are motivated and self-driven. Seek new challenges—not more money. VOL. 21 ISSUE 1042

aty is divided into two areas: the City of Katy which became a municipality in 1945, and the greater Katy area whose boundaries are defined by the 181 square mile Katy Independent School District. The Katy Area footprint embraces three cities, all of the City of Katy, some parts of the City of Fulshear and some incorporated areas of the City of Houston. Three counties – Fort Bend, Harris and Waller are included in the footprint as well. The town’s name comes from the MKT (MissouriKansas-Texas) railroad, and Katy’s railroad museum is in a pocket park in the center of Katy. The City of Katy has grown from 849 people in 1950 to 15,591 in 2015. However, the greater Katy area has more than 309,556 residents and is bigger than Pittsburgh according to Alteryx, an analytics company. The City of Katy is still annexing land in order to be prepared for future growth.

MKT Caboose - Katy Railroad Museum

Katy ISD can take credit for a lot of this growth: there are 73,000 students in Katy schools, and it is the largest employer with more than six thousand employees. Surveys show that more than 90% of new residents choose Katy because Katy ISD has such a stellar reputation.

A Free Ride?

your son to work for it.

Dear Dave,

—Dave Invest

My son is going off to college soon, but he’s never had a job. His uncle has offered him a really nice, low mileage used car for $3,000. My husband doesn’t want us to give him money for the car, but I think this deal is just too good to pass up. What do you think?

Dear Dave,

Tonya

in Chandler

I’m 19 years old, and I’m putting myself through college debt-free. I usually work part time during the semesters, but right now I’m working full time. I have about $2,000 in mutual funds, and I was wondering if I should add my fulltime work income to that or save it all to help pay for school. Chandler

Dear Tonya, Unless there’s some sort of disability that’s prevented your son from working part time over the last few years, I’ve got to agree with your husband on this. Your son needs a car, but he also needs to get off his butt and work for it. If you get this car for him, you’re just teaching him that mommy and uncle will take care of everything. That’s not a good lesson for any child to learn, and it’s an especially bad thing for a teenager. When you and your husband first started out in life, I’m guessing you didn’t start out rich. Am I right? It’s not really the car deal that’s the problem here; it’s the lesson that will be learned. At his age, it’s silly for him not to want to work for a car, and you and your husband need to be up in his face about that. Then, if he chooses not to work for a car, he can walk. He shouldn’t be rewarded for showing no desire to go earn things and make stuff happen. When my son was around that age and wanting a car, he was working his tail off around my office packing boxes and painting stairwells. That’s how you learn about the benefits of hard work. If you don’t teach your son how to work now, he’ll be living with you when he’s 30 years old and doing exactly what he’s doing now – which is nothing. This automobile deal is a bad deal, because it doesn’t teach

JUNE 3, 2016

Dear Chandler, Wow! Great job, man! I appreciate that you’re looking toward the future with your investment, but right now I want you to invest in you. I want you to make sure, first and foremost, that you graduate college debt-free. So, if I’m in your shoes, I’m piling up the cash to pay for school. You’re in a season of your life where things are more hectic than you probably ever dreamed they could be. My advice is to keep that money liquid. Keep it available and on hand, and don’t tie it up in mutual funds at the moment. You’ll have plenty of time to continue investing once you graduate. It’s best for you to concentrate on finishing school, then landing a job and finding a place to live after college. Even if you end up living in the same place for a while, starting life in the real world takes money, so let’s make sure you can make that happen. In other words, Chandler, as long as you do something with your education and that education is in an area that’s useable, you are a better investment than mutual funds right now! —Dave VOL. 21 ISSUE 1042

JOBS

You Can Get with a Mechatronics Degree

mechatronics

The term originated as a blend of the words mechanics and electronics. As computers were introduced, the narrow focus of two components didn’t fit well anymore and needed to be expanded. Now, mechatronics refers to technology that uses mechanical, electrical and computer software and/or hardware components in its creations. Here’s a rundown of 10 jobs you can do with a mechatronics degree.

1. Electro-mechanical Technician Electro-mechanical technicians use their knowledge of electrical systems and use schematics to assemble these systems with machine parts. Computer-controlled hydraulics or pneumatics are good examples of assemblies they work on. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median pay is $51,820 per year.

2. Mechanical Engineer Mechanical engineers design mechanical and thermal devices using computers. Once a prototype is made, they oversee the process until the device is ready for implementation. Generators, engines, elevators, escalators, turbines, and HVAC systems are all good examples of work in this field. The median pay is $80,580 per year.

3. Automation Technician Automation technicians monitor and repair manufacturing systems. Think automation machinery, that is computer-controlled, in factories or other types of manufacturing facilities. The BLS does not collect information on this particular job title, but estimates the annual wage to be $50,000.

HOUSTON HAS MECHATRONICS SCHOOLS! VOL. 21 ISSUE 1042

4. Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Designing and implementing designs for electric vehicles is a complex process, more so than the traditional combustion engine. According to the BLS, engineering knowledge in this automotive field, and respective median incomes, include: electronic, $100,450; mechanical, $81,290; and electrical, $87,580. Since mechatronics encompasses many aspects of these fields, it is a perfect knowledge base to enter this type of specialized manufacturing.

5. Robotics Engineer

8. Product Engineer

Some mechatronics degree holders go into robotics, which involves creating computer programs, so a machine can interact with the physical world. While software engineers usually create the software programs, robotics engineers integrate it with the hardware. As a team, they then test and develop robots to fit tasks, such as aerospace rockets or robots assisting in surgical procedures. The possibilities are endless.

Product engineers ensure manufactured products are healthy and safe for use by consumers and businesses. They combine their knowledge of design with safety to ensure the products produced will not injure or make someone sick. The median pay for is $76,830 per year.

6. Animatronics Engineer Animatronics is similar to robotics with a twist. Animatronics adds bringing “life to an inanimate object by giving it human or animal characteristics. By animating a robot to imitate lifelike characteristics, a knowledge of mechatronics with anatomy, robotics and puppetry is needed. Applications of this knowledge include creating exhibits or special effects for movies, such as the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, the shark in Jaws or the alien in E.T.

9 The Driverless Car .

Media lately has turned attention toward automobiles that drive themselves. Mechatronics is the perfect match for this type of technology. It blends the machinery that must safely function on its own, while piloting itself, with the software systems designed to control it.

10. Biomechatronics Engineer

7. Industrial Engineer

Biomechatronics is where mechanical and electronic elements are integrated into a biological organism. An good example is a bionic leg for someone who has lost (or never had) an organic leg. The biometric component imitates the element missing originally from impairment, injury or birth defect.

Industrial engineers research and improve the overall process required to make a product or provide a service. They cut waste and coordinate workers, machines, materials and energy sources to make the most expedient process to create the end product or service. The median annual pay for industrial engineers is $78,860.
