Profile
Do you want to maintain a strong online presence that highlights your career and your achievements? Are you looking for a new job? Either way, having a LinkedIn profile is vital to achieving your career goals. According to LinkedIn’s own figures, the network contains over 313 million members across over 200 countries and territories. Over 3 million companies have LinkedIn pages, and the most recent usage statistics detail over 5.7 billion professionally orientated searches during a single year. The best way to become an effective member of this vast network is through a detailed professional profile. This article presents 12 steps to help you craft that perfect profile.
1. Create an Effective Headline Start your profile by completing the headline. The headline is a snippet of information that appears under your name at the top of the profile. It needs to be concise and contain keywords relevant to your role and profession. Give the headline some thought since it sets the theme for your profile. Let’s look at two headlines for an experienced project manager within the insurance Industry. A standard LinkedIn headline would give your position and your place of employment, such as ‘Project Manager, Insurance Company International’. Now look at the expanded and more thoughtful version: ‘PMP-certified Project Manager, Insurance Company International - Successful leader for a wide range of international projects within the insurance industry.’ The second version is more likely to encourage potential clients, contacts, and recruiters to examine that profile in more detail. Consider how best to encapsulate your career in a manner that will draw readers further into your profile. 2. Write a Summary The summary provides a similar function to the headline although, with a limit of 2,000 characters, you have a lot more space. It also offers the chance to use a more conversational tone than in other sections of your profile. Describe your current role and how you approach your work. Then touch on some aspects of your career and devote a sentence each to a selection of your main accomplishments. Conclude by stating what values you bring to a project or organization. 3. Be Honest Resist the temptation to give yourself inflated job titles or to change the dates that you worked with a particular organization. A recruiter can easily check these facts, and even minor discrepancies will cast doubt on the whole of your profile.

Keep the information fact-based and highlight your achievements rather than merely listing responsibilities.
4. Use a Suitable Profile Photo ‘You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression’ is a phrase that is repeated so often that its essential truth is often overlooked. With regard to LinkedIn profile photos the expression is most certainly accurate. While a good photo, on its own, won’t get you that job or ensure that promotion a bad photo has the potential to undermine an otherwise excellent profile. Remember, LinkedIn is not Facebook, so no party photos or pictures of you cuddling
your favorite cat. A photo should complement your profile so keep it simple and don’t be afraid to be staid. A good quality head and shoulders photo is the best option. If you don’t have any suitable photos hire a professional to take one. 5. Disable the Activity Feed If you are reworking an old profile, you can temporarily disable your ‘Activity Broadcasts’. This will give you the opportunity to carefully and silently update your profile. This can be done by going into the ‘Settings’, ‘Privacy Controls’, then ‘Turn on/off your Activity Broadcasts’. After updating your profile restart the ‘Activity Broadcasts’. 6. Customize the Profile URL LinkedIn provides a profile URL for each individual profile that consists of your name followed by a series of seemingly random numbers. A personalized URL is tidier and more professional. To make the change, go to ‘Settings’, then ‘Edit Public Profile’, and ‘Customize Your Public Profile URL’. Add your new profile URL to your email signature. It is a simple but often overlooked means of publicizing your profile and making new connections. 7. Seek Endorsements Actively seek endorsements and recommendations. While endorsements are less valuable than a well-written recommendation they have become an important feature of LinkedIn, allowing colleagues and contacts to validate your skills. A good way to build up your endorsements is to trawl through your contacts and endorse their skills. In most instances they will offer reciprocal endorsements. 8. The Importance of Recommendations Recommendations have the greatest po
tential to put your profile ahead of the competition but acquiring recommendations needs to be done in a considered manner. Don’t approach connections that you have not worked with. That person may, understandably, refuse to recommend someone whose work they do not know. Even if you do get a recommendation in such cases it is likely to be bland and unfocussed.

In these difficult economic times, more and more working professionals are forced to spend time away from their families. Other professionals are advancing their personal agendas in hopes of getting to the top of their profession. This article examines how working professionals can implement goal setting for their own families despite their hectic schedules. Like many professionals caught up in my work life and work family, individuals often do not take the time to use these proven principles in their own homes. Many couples are more selfish than their children are and don’t provide a healthy, nurturing environment for them. Based on the career counseling calls I’m getting, that is the case for some of the MBAs seeking to advance their careers. Either their current employers are not promoting them or the new MBA grad just hasn’t found a new job yet. Last month, I taught a full-day job search seminar for the MBA students at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU). The MBAs sat through eight hours covering the best job-search techniques, the formula on resume writing, ways to create impressive cover letters and we spent a lot of time on improving their interview techniques and how to answer those tough, tricky questions employers like to ask. MBAs have some work experience, but combining the past experience and applying the new degree and grabbing employers’ attention is not easy in a tough economy. Here are a few job-hunting tips to help you succeed in landing a new six-figure job.
THE MBA RESUME.
You’ve got 15 seconds to get an employer’s attention. Your degree is an impressive credential, so be sure to have it displayed on your resume and in your cover letters next to your name, i.e. Jack Ryan, MBA. Outline past experience - paid and unpaid. Use action verbs to highlight your accomplishments and the results you achieved. Top skills employers seek from MBA grads include: management, research, organizational skills, communication, problem solving, and team collaboration. Be sure to demonstrate initiative, since it’s your potential that a hiring manager is trying to gage. (Take the resume assessment quiz to see if employers will notice your resume.) You may have learned a lot of theory in school but employers wonder how you will you apply that knowledge on the job. Expect to get asked tough questions. Many employers use the “situational” or “behavioral-style” of interview questioning, which asks you to give specific examples of positive and negative work situations. The interviewer uses this probing style to determine how you have performed in the past. These questions often start out with “Give me an example,” or “Tell me about a time,” or “Describe a situation.” They seek details about your past abilities and performance. Then, the interviewer rates each response to determine and predict
