Automotive

Service Excellence Certification Guide The National Institute for Auto Service Excellence operates the ASE certification program. Obtaining your ASE certification may entitle you to a promotion or pay raise. Once you receive your initial certification, you will be required to renew your certification every five years. Training for the ASE exam is offered at many trade schools. It is typically conducted over a oneyear period and includes basic technician skills so you can obtain your first job in a shop. ASE offers more than 40 specialized exams to choose from. The tests are divided into 14 main categories of study, such as automotive service, alternate fuels and truck equipment. There are subcategories within each area, such as engine performance and automatic transmissions. General business skills such as cataloging parts, sales techniques and communication skills for working with customers are also covered by ASE certification tests. You can register online(www.ase.com/Tests/ASE-Certification-Tests/Register-Now.aspx) or by calling ASE (1-877-346-9327) if you want to take the written tests. Computer testing is only available at an ASE-approved test center. You must make your testing appointment three days in advance. The registration deadline is March 31 for the May testing session and September 30 for the November session. You must pay a separate fee for registration and each test you would like to take. The fees are slightly higher for online testing than the written version. You may take the tests online or in writing. You must visit an approved testing center to take the written tests. The exams run between 30 minutes and two hours, depending on the subject material covered. Each exam is designed to test your practical understanding of the concept by walking you through troubleshooting a defective part or performing a specific repair. Make sure to bring your driver’s license or state identification card to the testing center. You should allow an extra 30 minutes to complete the necessary paperwork before the test begins. You must complete two years of work experience as a mechanic before you may qualify for ASE certification. You may substitute a year of technical school for one year of work experience. You may still register and take your exams before satisfying the experience requirement. However, your certification will not become effective until the date you finish your required work experience.

Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY

Should Retirees Move Investments to a CD?

Her Birthday Money Is Symbolic

Dear Dave,

Dear Dave,

My wife and I are in our early 70s, and we’re retired. We have about $136,000 in corporate bonds and $200,000 in mutual funds. Considering our age, should we move the investments into a CD?

My wife received $100 from her p a r e n t s f o r h e r b i r t h d a y. W h e n I a s k e d what she planned to do with it, she said she was going to add it to her s p e n d i n g m o n e y. I t h i n k s h e s h o u l d put it toward us paying off debt, but I bit my tongue and didn’t say anything. We’re in pretty good shape f i n a n c i a l l y, s o s h o u l d I m e n t i o n i t o r just let it go?

Kurt

Dear Kurt, T h e r e ’s a l w a y s a c h a n c e y o u ’ l l l o s e money if you leave it in mutual f u n d s a n d b o n d s . T h a t ’s t h e n a t u r e o f t h e m a r k e t . B u t t h e r e ’s a n o t h e r kind of risk based on what you’re p r o p o s i n g , a n d t h a t ’s r i s k o f v a l u e due to inflation.

21 Issue 1028 26 Vol. February 26 - March 4, 2016

Assuming you two are in good health, you could expect to live another 10 to 20 years. Most current CD rates are less than 1 percent. Even if they rise to 2 or 3 percent in the future, do you really want to see that kind of return when inflation is likely to rise 4 p e r c e n t a n n u a l l y ? T h a t ’s i n i t s e l f a type of risk, so I would urge you to keep that in mind. No, I wouldn’t advise moving all of your money to CDs. If I were in your shoes, I’d live off the income generated by my mutual fund investments. As for the corporate bonds, I’m not a big fan of those. They entail almost as much risk as mutual funds without the good returns (on average) over a long period of time. I f y o u ’ r e c o n c e r n e d a b o u t s t a b i l i t y, I’m okay with you taking a little money from your bonds and putting i t i n t o a C D r i g h t n o w. Resume Not Working?

9Ways to Improve Your Resume by Robin Ryan Bestselling Author of Winning Resumes

If your resume isn’t getting you any employer calls about job interviews, the problem is likely with the way you created the resume. Maybe you get a call or two but it’s not for a job at the right level. Again, it’s the way you wrote your resume. I’ve written over 5000 resumes and looked at twice that many and it’s easy to make big mistakes because you aren’t a hiring expert. Here is a good starting point of what employers need to see on your resume. Time to put your resume under a microscope and see how you can improve it so employers do call.

21 Issue 1028 44 Vol. February 26 - March 4, 2016

My Top 9 Dos & Don’ts To Follow. Do Not... 1. Include any graphics or design elements. Today’s resume are mostly electronically sent so when you upload to an employer’s job via a website the software doesn’t “see” or record any graphics, pictures or colored ink.

2. Post your job descriptions.

Robin Ryan is a career counselor offering individual services including Interview Coaching and Resume Writing. She is

Your job description is often very general and it offers no proven evidence you have done the job well. Avoid copying and pasting these into your resume.

3. Let the length be longer than 2 pages.

a Speaker and the bestselling author of seven career books including 60 Seconds & You’re Hired and Over 40 & You’re Hired. She has appeared on 1500 TV and radio shows including Oprah, Dr Phil, CNN and ABC News. CLICK

HR Recruiters say they won’t read past page 2, and hate crammed, crowded and tiny fonts on resumes. 99% skim your resume in a 15-20 second glance. It’s important that it’s easy to read, font size is 12, Arial or Helvetica are the preferred fonts.

4. Use abbreviations or acronyms.

HERE to get her 10 page article “HIRED Using the Hidden Job Market”.

Spell out the complete names of schools, cities, associations and common work jargon completely, since employers often use HR generalists to screen these and they may not recognize those abbreviations or acronyms.

9 Do...

5. Focus on advertising results and outcomes. What you have achieved on the job is what gets employers interested. Note your actions showing results, such as how you saved time or money, or if you made the company money.

6. Show your initiative and potential. List out the new things your created showing how the employer benefited. New systems, designs, tools, processes, etc. anything that shows you put a lot of effort into making things more productive and better.

7. Target the resume. Only include information in the body that supports the job title you are applying for. This means edit out older material and focus on your last 5-7 years. Point out skills necessary to perform the job you seek.

8. Use keywords. Electronic submission makes these a critical part of your resume. These are usually nouns and are typical work tasks you to do as a part of your job. Search through job openings and see what common skills employers require. Those likely need to be added and may be sprinkled throughout the resume.

9. Proofread! Read the entire document out loud word for word to catch any errors. Then, ask a friend to proofread it too. Be sure you entire resume is written in past tense which is the acceptable style employers wish to see. Vol. 21 Issue 1028

Surprising Six-Figure Jobs Usually, you think of doctors, lawyers, and CEOs when you think of six-figure salaries. However, if you’re looking for a high-paying job that’s outside of the traditional medical, legal, and business executive realms, there are a number of nifty opportunities that might not come to mind immediately. Below is a list of five surprising jobs with six-figure salaries .

Loan Officer

The top 10% of loan officers make over $110,000 every year, which makes sense when you consider the large amounts of money for which loan officers are responsible.

Personal Trainers

The top 10% of personal trainers earn more than $100,000 per year, despite the fact that personal trainers are usually paid hourly. The median salary is $54,200, and those who command the highest salaries usually have a college degree and years of experience.

Makeup Artist

The top 10% of makeup artists earn a shocking $102,450 a year! Maybe all those times you got into your mother’s makeup when you were a kid will finally pay off! The mean salary for a makeup artist is still a comfortable $50,000. Generally, the highest paying makeup artist jobs are in Hollywood and theater production.

Casino Manager The average annual salary for a casino manager is $73,940, but the top 10% make $116,070. Although many casino jobs are low paying, casino managers are paid handsomely. The bulk of job openings are - obviously - in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, but there are also jobs to be had in other areas, such as Pennsylvania and California.

Elevator Mechanic

Given the possibility of terrifying crashes and injuries in the event of improperly functioning elevators, it makes sense that elevator mechanics would be highly paid. The top 10% make over $109,000, but even the average elevator mechanic pulls in a healthy $72,900 every year.

Public Comment Sought on Houston Bike Plan Draft

GENERAL

Plan Calls for Creating 794 Miles of High-Comfort Bikeways by 2026

February 18, 2016 -- Mayor Sylvester Turner today released the draft of the Houston Bike Plan, the next step in the City’s efforts to help make Houston a safer, healthier, and more accessible bicycle-friendly city. This Bike Plan integrates with the ongoing Bayou Greenways 2020 project and identifies additional bike facilities needed to achieve safe access to these attractive bikeway corridors from more neighborhoods. “I’m pleased to release this ambitious, yet realistic plan for making Houston an outstanding place for riding a bicycle,” said Mayor Turner said. “Providing safe, convenient means for cycling to parks, schools and jobs is an important part of providing healthy mobility and recreation choices for Houstonians. I urge residents to review the document and then send us feedback. Your input is essential to ensuring we have a comprehensive plan for moving forward.” Once fully implemented, this Plan will triple the existing bikeway miles and provide six times more high comfort bikeways miles than what exists now. The draft of the plan already represents a significant amount of public engagement. The City and its partners sought input at over 70 community meetings and events. The project received over 1,000 public comments and nearly 3,000 online surveys were completed. The Plan recommends: •Creating 328 miles of high-comfort bikeways through modest investments in short-term projects such as street restriping and wayfinding signage on low-volume, low-speed streets. •Adding 86 miles of high-comfort bikeways through Key Connection Projects to help connect neighborhoods and activity centers to a city-wide network. •Establishing a long-term vision to add 861 miles in high-comfort bikeway facilities, including nearly 600 miles that will be developed over time as streets are reconstructed. •Creating a Bicycle Toolbox that contains comprehensive approaches and recommendations for the design of bikeway projects, a policy framework, and programs that will educate and encourage more people to bike. With the draft Plan complete, the City is seeking feedback from Houstonians. Visit the website at HoustonBikePlan. org for more information and to let the City know what you think. The public comment period closes April 11, 2016. The City will then modify the draft Plan based on the feedback received from the community. Funding partners for the project include BikeHouston, Houston Parks Board, Houston-Galveston Area Council, Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). For questions or comments, please email bikeways@houstontx.gov. Vol. 21 Issue 1028

Career Planning

for

High Schoolers In last week’s JobSparx, High Schoolers learned about the first step to planning for a career through exploring their interests. Many young men and women really start to understand what career paths they want to take as they begin their Freshman year. Taking advantage of the many programs available through CTE in Texas Independent School Districts can be a launching point for the job of their dreams. This week, experience is highlighted, through internships, work, and finding other opportunities to get experience in a selected field, or just to learn important soft skills.

Get Experience

If job shadowing gives you a taste of what an occupation is like, imagine how helpful getting experience could be. Students can begin getting career-related experiences in high school through internships, employment, and other activities. Taking part in different experiences is another step toward helping you to figure out what you like—and what you don’t. These experiences may teach valuable job skills, such as the importance of arriving on time. (See box: Put forth your best you.) But, say school counselors, students need to remember that school takes priority over other pursuits. “It’s a good idea to get experience while you’re a student,” says Hartline, “but not at the expense of academic success.” Danaher agrees. “School should be your full-time job,” he says.

Internships Completing an internship is an excellent way to get experience. Internships are temporary, supervised assignments designed to give students or recent graduates practical job training. Sometimes, internships or other experiential learning positions are built into educational programs, and students receive academic credit for completing them. At Lovely’s school, for example, students have the option to fulfill an internship for credit during their junior or senior year. Lovely interned during her junior year for her high school theater director. “She gave us opportunities to do everything

from contacting local newspapers for ads to writing program notes to directing the middle school production,” says Lovely. The experience gave Lovely a feel for a director’s work—and helped to cement her career goals. At other schools, students seek out internships on their own. Academic credit may not be awarded, but gaining handson experience can still be worthwhile. Check with your school counselor to see if opportunities exist at your school.

Jobs Summer or part-time employment is another way to get experience. Paid jobs allow you to earn money, which can help you learn how to budget and save for future goals or expenses. For some students, summer is a great time to explore careers through employment. As the chart shows, young people worked in a variety of industries in July 2014, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The U.S. Department of Labor has rules about youth employment. These rules differ depending on your age, but they often limit the types of jobs and number of hours you can work. States may have additional restrictions.

By joining groups that involve community service and leadership opportunities, such as student government or honor societies, you can hone work-related skills or interests. Attending a camp in a subject area that interests you, such as engineering or writing, can help you focus on academic skills that may lead to a career. Some student organizations aim to promote career readiness. SkillsUSA, DECA, and the Future Business Leaders of America are just a few of the national-level groups that might have student chapters at your high school. Volunteering allows you to serve your community and bolster your experience. Religious institutions, local nonprofits, and government agencies are among the many organizations that use volunteers to fill a variety of roles. In addition to encouraging you to meet likeminded people and develop your interests, these activities also show future employers and postsecondary schools that you are motivated and engaged. And the more you shape your thoughts about a career, the better you’ll know how to prepare for it.

To Be Continued... Read Part Three in the March 4th Issue of JobSparx!

Hartline advises that students who work during the school year start with a few hours and build from there, once they find it won’t interfere with their studies. “For some students, work is a motivator. For others, it’s a distractor,” she says. Regardless of when or where they work, school counselors say, students who pursue employment can learn from it. “I think there’s no substitute for any type of work experience,” says Michael Carter, director of college counseling at St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Virginia. “Without experience, it’s hard for students to appreciate what type of career they’d like to have because it’s all hypothetical.”

Other Activities You can participate in other activities in high school that may spark a career interest. Examples include yearbook committee, science club, and debate team.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The mikeroweWORKS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes hard work, supports the skilled trades, and challenges the persistent belief that a four-year degree is automatically the best path to take. The Foundation awards scholarships to men and women who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for mastering a specific trade. Our focus is on supporting the specific skilled trades that help close the country’s skills gap and those that represent the significant bulk of our unfilled jobs. The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in scholarships to schools around the country, including Midwest Technical Institute, Tulsa Welding School, The Refrigeration School and Universal Technical Institute. One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”

SeaPerch: Alief ISD After School STEM Program Offered to Middle School and High School Students in Collaboration with HCC Minority Male Initiative Program FEB 23, 2016 Have you ever wondered how you can captivate the interest of students while infusing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, at the same time? Well, SeaPerch, an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) robotics program for students, does just that. The Office of Naval Research provides an avenue for students and school districts to experience building robots in formal and informal settings at an extremely low cost, yet with high technical skills. According to SeaPerch.org, “building a SeaPerch ROV teaches basic skills in ship and submarine design and encourages students to explore naval architecture and marine and ocean engineering principles.” Moreover, students are exposed to careers in naval architecture and naval, ocean, and, marine engineering.

Houston Community College Minority Male Initiative program has provided robots, tool kits, and community receptions for the middle school and high school students of Alief ISD. This was done under the direct leadership of Mr. Rodney McLaurin, Program Director of Student Services Initiatives and Dr. Edna L. Kingsley in collaboration with Alief ISD (Dr. Karen Jacobs, Mrs. Denia Puerto-Rivera, and Dr. Jean Menson) along with the many wonderful coaches, parents, and students. HCC is also volunteering to assist with coordinating with Alief ISD in hosting the SeaPerch’s District and Regional Competition slated this spring in Alief ISD. The students of Alief ISD, in collaboration with the Houston Community College, are seeing that college is a definite reality in their near future. The soft and hard skills obtained through this exciting after school program has truly strengthened students’ outlook about their future. To quote one of our Alief-HCC STEM after school students, “SeaPerch is a good thing at school because it helps kids out in math, science, reading, and writing. In our groups, we have to present. We have to use reading because we have to read the SeaPerch book to figure out the directions. We have to use math because we have to measure and calculate the speed for the robot. We want to do our best in order to compete at Regionals and Nationals and do our best for Alief ISD and HCC. This would mean the world to us to be able to one day get a scholarship and attend college in STEM.”

CAREER EDUCATION - FORTIS SOUTH

IS TODAY THE DAY

I need to interview but I have to keep my temp job! I need a permanent job, but I am working temp right now. Of course, it’s always possible that this will turn into a permanent job, but I need to be prepared. I’m in a busy office that doesn’t give me much time to leave for interviews. I would not want to take off because I want to make sure that I do a great job. I also would not like the company to know that I am interviewing. How should I handle interviewing while not burning bridges at my job, which I need, or with my agency?

I want extra work on weekends… Diana, do you think that there might be any restaurants that allow bussers to work only on weekends?

-Houston, Texas Reader

I’m sure there are. Find some restaurants close to your home, and go ask them. There are retail jobs that are weekends only, too.

A:

How many miles do you commute one way to work? Do you think that 19 miles one way is reasonable? I may be moving to Houston soon and need to make sure that the drive is not too much.

If you can schedule everything on just one day, you won’t be gone all that long. If you are gone only one time, it should be acceptable. Good luck, because this one is tough!!

How far is a good commute?

How do you like the current company? How do you like your job and job duties? Do you feel like the people are accepting of you? If all of these things are good, then you may not need to look for another job. If your pay is not enough, and if you have any doubts, you need to start looking. Even though it seems hard, you have to look out for your future. Try to schedule several interviews on the same day. You can explain to the companies with whom you are inter viewing that you don’t want to leave your current company high and dry because it wouldn’t be ethical. Future bosses love that attitude. (I’m confessing something that can be used against me!) Some companies (not many) will interview after office hours. See if you can arrange that. Just explain that you know it is unusual, but you want to do your best at your current job and not take off when there is work to be done.

I think it all depends on where those 19 miles are. If you are driving 19 miles in Houston, tha t’s a long commute. If you are driving, 19 miles in a smaller town or one that has great traffic patterns, 19 miles is certainly okay. It may take you only 19 minutes if the traffic flows well. I used to drive 15 miles. That was half an hour in the morning and 90 minutes at night.

What Automotive Service Technicians & Mechanics Do A

utomotive service techs & mechanics perform oil changes on vehicles. Automotive service technicians and mechanics, often called service technicians or service techs, inspect, maintain, & repair cars and light trucks.

Duties Automotive service techs & mechanics typically do the following: • Identify problems, often by using computerized diagnostic equipment • Plan work procedures, using charts, technical manuals, and experience • Test parts and systems to ensure that they work properly • Follow checklists to ensure that all critical parts are examined • Perform basic care and 21 Issue 1028 62 Vol. February 26 - March 4, 2016

maintenance, including changing oil, checking fluid levels, and rotating tires • Repair or replace worn parts, such as brake pads, wheel bearings, and sensors • Perform repairs to manufacturer and customer specifications • Explain automotive problems and repairs to clients Although service technicians work on traditional mechanical systems, such as engines, transmissions, and drivebelts, they must also be familiar with a growing number of electronic systems. Braking, transmission, and steering systems, for example, are controlled primarily by computers and electronic components. Other integrated electronic systems, such as accidentavoidance sensors, are becoming common as well. In

addition, a growing number of technicians are required to work on vehicles that consume alternative fuels, such as ethanol and electricity. Service technicians use many different tools, including computerized diagnostic tools and power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding torches, and jacks and hoists. These tools usually are owned by their employers. Service technicians also use many common hand tools, such as wrenches, pliers, and sockets and ratchets. Service technicians generally own these tools themselves. In fact, experienced workers often have thousands of dollars invested in their personal tool collection. For example, some invest in their own set of pneumatic tools—such as impact wrenches—powered by compressed air.

The following are examples of types of Service Technicians:

Automotive Air-Conditioning Technicians install and repair air-conditioners and parts, such as compressors, condensers, and controls. These workers must be trained and certified in handling refrigerants.

Brake Technicians Diagnose brake system problems, adjust brakes, replace brake rotors and pads, and make other repairs on brake systems. Some technicians specialize in both brake and front-end work. (See “Front-end technicians.â€?)Â

For information about technicians who work on large trucks and buses, see the profile on diesel service technicians and mechanics. For information about technicians who work on farm equipment, construction vehicles, and railcars, see the profile on heavy vehicle and mobile equipment service technicians.

For information about technicians who repair and service motorcycles, motorboats, and small all-terrain vehicles, see the profile on small engine mechanics. Drivability Technicians Also known as diagnostic technicians, use their extensive knowledge of engine management and fuel, electrical, ignition, and emissions systems to diagnose issues that prevent engines from performing efficiently. They often use the onboard diagnostic system of a car and electronic testing equipment such as scan tools and multimeters to find the malfunction.

Front-End Technicians Diagnose ride, handling, and tire wear problems. To correct these problems, they frequently use special alignment equipment and wheel-balancing machines.

Transmission Technicians and Rebuilders Work on gear trains, couplings, hydraulic pumps, and other parts of transmissions. An extensive knowledge of computer controls and the ability to diagnose electrical and hydraulic problems are needed to work on these complex components.
