Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY
Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money & business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.
Just Be Honest Dear Dave, I took a new job less than a month ago. Just the other day, I was recruited by a huge company for the same position that pays twice what I’m making now. I didn’t apply for the job that was offered; they came directly to me. I didn’t sign a contract or promise to work a certain length of time with my current employer, but they’re good people and I want to do the right thing and handle things well. Do you have any advice? Jeff Dear Jeff, In situations like this I always try to put on the other person’s shoes. Let’s pretend you own the company and you just hired a young guy. A few weeks later, someone comes in out of the blue and offered him double what he’s currently making. I can tell you what would happen here. I’d tell him to take it. I mean, I would. And as an employer I’m certainly not going to double his income that quickly. I think you take the job. Just walk into your leader’s or supervisor’s office and tell the truth. Lay it all out there, and let them know that while you feel awful about the situation, you had no intention or misleading them or causing problems, but you simply can’t pass up the opportunity. Be sure to show an extreme amount of gratitude, and promise to do everything possible to make the transition as easy as possible. Truthfully, if an organization cares about its team members, and one of those has the ability to double their income and they’re not breaking a promise in the process, this type of scenario is perfectly reasonable. It may be a little uncomfortable for you—and inconvenient for them for a 21 Issue 1033 24 Vol. April 1 - April 8, 2016
while—but they can’t realistically expect you to pass up the opportunity to double your salary. You’re a good man, Jeff. Congratulations! – Dave
Settlements for Medical Bills Dear Dave, Will hospitals take a settlement on past due medical bills, or is this a rare occurrence? Kristin Dear Kristin, It’s not all that rare for hospitals to accept a settlement on past due bills. Most businesses will accept a settlement on past due accounts, and many hospitals will accept a deeply discounted settlement because they’ve usually gotten a big chunk of their money up front from the insurance company. Let’s say you had a $1,000 bill with a hospital you honestly haven’t been able to pay for several months, or even two or three years. If you go to them and offer $300 or $400 as a settlement, there’s a good chance you’ll have a deal. Just make sure you get the agreement in writing before you hand anyone a check. Remember, you have a moral and legal obligation to pay your debts in full if at all possible. But if you truly can’t afford to pay, an agreed upon settlement between two parties can be an honorable and acceptable compromise. —Dave

UTMB
University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is by far the largest employer in Galveston with nearly 9000 employees. UTMB was founded as the state’s first medical school in 1891. Currently it qualifies as an extremely large medical school with 900 students. Freshman classes are larger than normal with 228 students. UTMB is more affordable than many other medical schools, and even though 83% of students receive some type of financial aid, that is lower than the national average. Doctors graduate with less debt at UTMB. Texas A &M University Galveston Campus is experiencing unprecedented growth. New projects include the 201,825 square foot Maritime Academy Hall that was completed in November 2015, the academic building that will add another 91,000 square feet of space by summer 2017, and the Pavilion that will start building in fall 2016. Career choices for their grads include: The Maritime License Option Program, Cruises, Engineering Program, Deck Program, Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC), Strategic Sealift Officer’s (SSOP) Program/NROTC, US Coast Guard MARGRAD Program.

Port of Galveston
The Port of Galveston is the oldest port in the Gulf of Mexico, west of New Orleans. It was established by the Congress of Mexico on October 17, 1825, and again by the Congress of the United States in 1837. As the nation’s fourth busiest port for cruise departures and because of an influx of demand, renovations at Terminal 2 are predicted to increase the Port’s capacity for even larger cruise ships. The port’s governing board approved spending up to $100,000 for design plans for a third cruise terminal.

Tourism
Not surprisingly, Galveston’s second largest employment sector is tourism. Tourism makes up 26% of Galveston’s economy. Galveston plays host to over seven million visitors a year.
GALVESTON Galveston Island Convention Center
A total of 10,205 jobs were sustained by visitors to Galveston Island in 2013. This included 7,879 direct and 2,326 indirect and induced jobs. That is approximately 33.6% (1 in 3) of all jobs on the Island. Those jobs generated total income of $257 million in 2013. If you just run down to the Island for a fun day on the beach and a visit to the Strand, you’re called a “day-tripper”. Day-trippers spend an average of $50 per person per day in Galveston, while overnight visitors spend about $108 per person. Because there are more day-trip visitors (more than 57% of visitors), they are a huge source of revenue for the area. The Galveston Island Convention Center hosts the ‘Oceans of Opportunities’ Job Fair each year. This is one of the largest job fairs held annually in the Houston area. www.galvestonislandconventioncenter.com/ Tall Ship Elissa
PLEASURE PIER is an old-fashioned waterfront amusement area with rides for all ages, games of skill and boardwalk eats. Fashioned after pleasure piers that have been popular coast attractions since the early 1900’s, the current Pleasure Pier in Galveston was constructed in 2012 by Landry’s Inc., restoring the historic pier after Hurricane Ike in 2008.

Summer Job Hunting 101 Sooner than later, the lines at your local fast food joints will be filled with more summer job seekers than hungry customers. Mallrats will be replaced by well-mannered students with résumés in hand. And your parents will begin a steady, annoying cadence that will only end when you’ve got a place to finally stamp your timecard:
By: Mike Ward
Camp counselor: Professional coach, athlete or trainer
“Have you’ve found a job yet…Have you’ve found a job yet? Have you’ve found a job yet?!?!”
Making sure that a dozen rug rats playing dodgeball don’t deliver each other black eyes is a good warm-up for playing with the big boys and girls. Here you can hone your understanding of game fundamentals and polish your locker room communication without worrying about upsetting any big league prima donnas.
Well, have you?
Pizza delivery driver: Musician
Sure, you can choose to diss the job search altogether, and spend the summer bored, broke and having to do mom and dad’s laundry every morning just to pass the time. But that’s just awkward for everyone. In other words, you need a job. And in order to beat the flood of slackers that will spill onto the ‘Net and into stores once we work our way into June, you need to start looking now. According to a recent Junior Achievement summer jobs survey, more than 85 percent of students ages 15 and older plan on looking for jobs. And if you do the quick math, you’ll realize not everyone is going to get their first choice of jobs (or second, or third). Someone is digging ditches, but that someone doesn’t have to be you. So, here are a few tips to make sure you’re not stuck folding dad’s boxer shorts in the middle of July…
HAVE REALISTIC SUMMER JOB EXPECTATIONS
Everyone has that one friend with the dream summer job – the one who makes more than you, works less and seemingly possesses an unlimited amount of sick days. (And by sick days, we mean days spent tanning by the pool while reading a copy of US Weekly). It may seem like that friend has won the summer job lottery, and we don’t want to be the fun police, but what is he/she really learning? Even if a summer job may not appear to be the yellow brick road to your dream career, you’d be surprised at what you can take away from the right job. Here are a few ideas of how summer employment can lend credible experience to your future dream job…
Cashier: Investment banker
Before you start investing millions of dollars belonging to Fortune 500 big wigs, you’re going to need to master making change for a $20 purchase. And those pesky penny rolls are a pain to break open.
Arts & crafts retail store stockperson: Designer to the stars
It’s doubtful that designing a dress for the Oscar red carpet walk will require you to know which kind of glue works best for attaching googly eyes onto pipe cleaners. But such a job can be the first on1033 the ladder to establishing that prized and Vol.rung 21 Issue posh skillApril set.1 - April 8, 2016

Hear us out first! Carpooling pizzas in your hatchback through strange neighborhoods at a responsible speed may not be the same as doing an acoustic set at the House of Blues, but answer us this: How many other jobs let you listen to any music you want to, as loud as you want to (without headphones)? That’s what we thought.
SOUND ADVICE
Job hunting and workplace clichés are a dime a dozen. You’ve probably heard to “dress for the job you want, not the one you have” or to “work outside the box.” As annoying as these are to hear – and as hard as that pesky “box” is to find – clichés serve a purpose in that there’s usually a meaningful nugget of truth at the core of each. Conversely, the time to serve up clichés is not during a job interview. When speaking with a potential employer, be candid but be careful. Likewise, be yourself but be sure to filter out the just plain weird stuff (your potential employer doesn’t need to know about your boy band fan club), and be one more thing…
BE HONEST WITH POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS
This starts with being honest with yourself. If you’re a proud vegan who isn’t sure you could stand handling meat patties and prime-cut filets all day, then skip the restaurant summer job route. Being honest also includes your initial conversations with potential bosses. Don’t over-commit to the amount of hours you’ll be able to work up front and then back down. Also, don’t claim you posses certain skills and experiences even if you don’t. We know it’s exciting to be on the cusp of landing a job, but the quickest way to crash and burn in your new gig is by fibbing.
DON’T BE “THAT GUY” OR “THAT GIRL”
When dozens and dozens of your peers are vying for the same coveted job, don’t make it easy for a potential employer to take you out of the running early. From having crass cell phone ring tones blowing up during an interview to dropping off a résumé while wearing a tuxedo T-shirt, the list of these embarrassing faux pas is long. When in doubt, pause, and then exercise a little common sense.
START NOW
Seriously...right now. And save yourself some time and gas money by browsing for summer jobs on www.jobsparx.com.

How to Make the
MOST
Many young people who are about to complete their formal educations wonder how they can make the most out of an internship. This is a valid question nowadays because today’s uncertain economy is requiring students to gain some sort of work experience if they wish to get ahead in a highly competitive job market.
Most employers will tell you that the best way to make the most out of an internship is to use your term as intern to develop good work habits that will help you become a reliable and productive worker. This is a good way to take advantage of internship opportunities because it can help you learn how to recognize the value of good work habits before you enter the workforce. With this thought in mind, here are a few good habits to learn as an intern that can help you make the most of your internship: One good habit to learn as an intern is getting into the habit of organizing your time and resources. Efficiency and productivity are highly valued by most employers because they allow people to maximize their value as a worker. This makes it a good idea to use your internship to learn how to prioritize your time and resources because it will make it easier for you to do this when you enter the workforce. Another good habit to learn as an intern is learning straight away the value of arriving on time for work and dressing appropriately. These habits are valuable for interns to develop straight away because most employers do not tolerate tardiness or a sloppy appearance. Therefore, interns should try to dress appropriately and arrive on time to learn how to value a neat appearance and functionality before they look for their first real job. In addition, another good habit to develop as an intern is the habit of working equally well as part of a group or independently. This is important nowadays because most firms tend to assign roughly equal amounts of work to individuals and groups. As a result, interns should try to split their time evenly working with groups and independently to get used to the idea of working this way.

Out of Your Internship By: Steve Volman
Finally, interns should also try to strive to complete tasks as accurately as possible. This is a great habit for young people to acquire because most employers still value employees who strive to complete projects accurately. This is true because most employers still use accuracy as one of their benchmarks for promotions and employee retention. As a result, interns who want to get ahead in their careers should strive to complete tasks as accurately as possible. As you can see, interns can get the most out of an internship by learning habits that will help them succeed when they formally enter the workforce. Learning these habits may not seem like much. However, they can form the basis for good working habits that can allow young people to succeed at finding a job in a tough job market. As a result, young people should think about how they can get the most out of an internship by developing good work habits early in their careers. Article source: Expert Articles

I got my job through JobSparx! I just started my new job and wanted to thank JobSparx. I have lived in Houston for 15 years, and anytime that I have looked for a job, I have found it in JobSparx. That’s only 3 jobs in 15 years, but I appreciate every opportunity. -Houston, Texas Reader
A:
I appreciate you! I’m always h a p p y t o h e a r t h i s k i n d o f s t o r y. Cong ra tula tions on your new job.
What can I say about a bad company? I worked for a company that was just terrible and was there for three miserable months. The management team yelled at each other, they yelled at me, they yelled at their suppliers, they yelled at all the other employees, and they yelled ever y single day. I hated being there and finally quit before I even had another job. How do I tell an interviewer that my last company was bad? -Houston, Texas Reader
A:
You don’t! No one wants to hear s m a c k a b o u t y o u r l a s t c o m p a n y. The odd thing is that the person complaining is always suspect as being the problem instead of the other party. I guess tha t it is human na ture to wonder a bout your stor y. If you need to say anything, take r e f u g e i n r o u t i n e c o m m e n t s . Yo u might sa y, “There are a lot of nice people who work there, but it wasn’t
the best place f or me.” (Of course, you have to be sincere, and there should be a lot of nice people who work there.)
Irrelevant questions… I have been on three interviews where the interviewer asks stupid questions. I don’t know whether to answer, tell them that the question is irrelevant or just leave. These questions have nothing to do with the kind of job I’ll do in the position. I told the last one that there is no way to answer the question. They haven’t called me, and I guess I messed up by being honest. How should I handle this? - Kingwood, Texas Reader
A: Get a sense of humor. Instead of judg ing the inter viewer as being dim witted, maybe it would be a good idea to think through the questions that you think of as “stupid.” I can almost guarantee you that they aren’t asking questions just to amuse themselves with your answers, but I can also almost guarantee that they are trying to find out how well you’ll fit into the company culture. There are a lot of companies that ask questions tha t will gauge your willingness to participa te. Whole Foods has asked candidates what they would do if the y f ound a penguin in the freezer. There is no right or wrong answer, but you can blow the inter view b y being rude. If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, just email Ask Diana. I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not ever y question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 t o 3 d ay s . Have a question for Diana? 5 Quick Tips to Beat the by Sean Manderton
Summer
Anyone with a weather eye on the job market knows that things are really heating up this summer. The economy looks like it’s (finally) starting to crawl its way out of recession, and the resultant optimism has stimulated a sudden surge of job applications that’s simply overwhelmed the paltry number of open positions currently available. As a result, securing a well-paid job that offers genuine opportunities for advancement is slowly becoming harder and harder, particularly if you’re applying in a way that doesn’t stand out from the sudden glut of competing applications you’re contending with. Luckily, there are a few simple things that can really help you to beat the summer job rush and stand head and shoulders above the oncoming wave of applicants. I like to think of them as my secret cheat sheet, but I guess they’re posted online now, so they’re not much of a secret anymore! All of these tips are very, very easy to put into practice; they’re simple, and I’ve picked them out specifically because they can be used to generate genuine results in a very short amount of time.
Pick Up the Phone!
2. 1.
I can guarantee that 90% of the competition are simply firing off application forms and resumes, hoping that someone (not a robot) at the other end is actually going to take the time to read through the same routine boilerplate they’ve read 30+ times that day before sending off an invitation to interview. Newsflash: they’re not!
Don’t be lulled into thinking that hitting the “apply” button actually counts as applying for a job. (Click here to tweet this thought.) In this day and age, you really need to do something to catch your potential employer’s attention, and it needn’t be a big thing, either — simply call up to ask a question about the application, or inquire about whether experience with this system or that application might help. Chances are, the person at the other end will really appreciate the fact that you’re not just drumming out resumes like a mindless automaton and, providing you’re polite and friendly, you’ll probably make a positive impression, too. Win-win. Of course, I wouldn’t advise doing this 24/7. Reserve it for the jobs you really want, and make sure your questions are relevant; otherwise some people might start to takeVol. umbrage. It’s one thing to try to stand out, but 21 Issue 1033 1 - April 8, 2016 anotherApril thing entirely to start wasting people’s time.

Don’t Be Afraid to Reach Out to Any Agencies in Your Area
Oddly enough, a lot of agencies go quiet at this time of year. Certainly in my experience, the summer season seems to drive people into applying directly, and while we’ll still pick people up on forums and websites, this can be a great time of year to actually pick up the phone and go hunting for a good agency yourself. I know several agencies in the UK (where I work) who respond particularly well to inquiries, and they always enjoy it when people reach out and contact them for opportunities. So don’t be afraid of the somewhat daunting agency “machine” that seems to scare of most clients at this time of year — the majority of recruitment professionals are still people, albeit very driven people with a real focus on placing candidates as fast as possible. They’ll do their best to help.

3. 4.
There are, in my experience, often a variety of small and relatively uncommon skills that are needed to do important day-to-day jobs in most industries — like using touch screen cash registers in the service industry, or editing a photo for your company’s blog if you work in marketing or journalism. Most of the time, you can teach yourself these skills well in advance of applying for a job, just by doing a little bit of research or by finding a free how-to guide. Now, I’m not suggesting you learn a new language here, or find out how to repair motorbikes before applying for that job at the tire shop. Think small wins, like mastering a content management system you know you’ll be using, or practicing with WordPress if you know that might be part of your daily routine. Employers really love this because it shows that you’re dedicated to being the best you can be, and because it cuts down on the training time they know they’ll need to invest once you actually start the job. So, if you’re looking for a quick way to stand out from all the other candidates with similar qualifications to you, have a quick look at tools you know you might be using on the job, and make sure you cram them onto your resume!

Got the Interview? Make Sure You Don’t Go Dehydrated
This might sound like a strange one, but I promise you it’s important. It’s easy to let interview stress interrupt your normal eating and drinking habits, but forgoing essentials like a glass of water can really take a toll during the summer months when the intense heat and constant sun can quickly dehydrate you Dehydration has a number of very negative consequences — it can cloud your thinking, make your responses seem sluggish and, worst of all, make you look very tired. I distinctly remember one employer telling me a promising client I’d recommended looked “very tired” after an interview that really should have gone better, and I’m sure that she’ll always look back at a missed opportunity like that and think, “If only I’d taken better care of myself that morning…”
Stand Out, But Don’t Go Overboard – You’re Not a Peacock!
5.
Some more interview advice: I know it can be really tempting to show off a bit, particularly in the summer when you can actually wear slightly more daring styles without running the risk of being frozen en-route. But it’s important to remember that you’re attending a professional interview. Generally, it’s okay to wear something that’ll help you to stand out as long as it’s recognizable business attire, but I’d always recommend that you err on the side of caution, since you can never tell what attitudes or preconceived notions your interviewer will have.
