Rental Runaround Dear Dave, My husband and I had to rent a car on a recent trip to Florida. When we tried to pay with our debit card, the attendant told us he would have to pull our credit report if we used debit instead of credit. He said all rental car companies operate that way, because
Adjustable Rate Mortgage Dear Dave Considering all the market volatility, why do banks offer adjustable rate mortgages? How did they come into being? Anonymous
there was concern about people stealing the cars and closing their checking accounts. Is this true? We’re trying to take control of our money using your plan, and we don’t want to get a credit card if we don’t have to. Michelle
Dear Anonymous, I was in the real estate business in 1978, and that was the year fixed rate mortgages went to 10 percent for the first time in history. It created all kinds of chaos, but that wasn’t the worst of it all. By 1981, rates were as high as 17 percent. Banks were paying
Dear Michelle, No, it’s not true that all rental car companies operate that way. I have a debit card I use to rent cars everywhere I go, and I’ve never experienced anything like that. There still may be a few of the smaller rental car companies that don’t take debit cards, but him telling you credit cards are the only way anyone rents a car without a big credit check hassle is a bunch of crap. When you’re setting up your reservation in the future, verify in advance that you’re dealing with a company that accepts debit cards and that there are no ridiculous strings attached. Then, if you don’t like the terms and conditions, go to another rental company. But don’t take a chance on wrecking your total money makeover
10 to 12 percent on savings accounts, but they were making just five percent back from their products. Essentially, banks began looking for a way to prevent themselves from losing money in the future. Out of that, the adjustable rate mortgage was born. With the adjustable rate mortgage (or ARM), banks offer a lower interest rate in the beginning to grab your attention. Then, when rates adjust they adjust up. It transfers risk to the consumer, and puts the homebuyer in a position where they’re at the mercy of the markets when it comes to the amount of their mortgage payments. Adjustable rate mortgages are a bad, bad deal. If you currently have one I’d encourage you to refinance now! —Dave
by running out to get a credit card for something silly. It’s just not worth the risk!

Create a Personalized Work Wardrobe Your job is more than just a list of duties with a paycheck every two weeks. Work is a place where you must appear professional at all times and dress within the company’s dress code guidelines. Once you are aware of the rules, make your own personal style statement.
Basics Basics are the heart of your wardrobe and the higher quality, the better. Higher quality may mean higher price but it also means longer lasting. For ease of use and washing, make sure you have five pants or skirts and a couple pairs of shoes. Toss in a suit jacket to add on more dressy days and you are good. Get a couple everyday button down shirts you can dress up or down depending on the day. Personalize your wardrobe a bit with some fun flashy-colored tops that are workplace appropriate. Remember, no major cleavage and no spaghetti straps.

Accessories Think of your favorite feature. Use that feature to decide how to play up your look. If you love your hair, add pizzazz to your look with fun hair bows or flowers. If you love your legs, find work appropriate patterned stockings. Extra pieces you add to your accessory collection will freshen up your look.

Interview Mistakes to Avoid By Robin Ryan author of “60 Seconds & You’re Hired!”
As
the job hunter, you probably don’t think about what the interviewer is stewing over on the other side of the desk. I had dinner recently with John, a hiring manager who had three days of interviews ahead of him where he was searching for a sales manager. He openly shared his thoughts with me. First off, John has an interesting job. He works as a Director overseeing managers across the US. He hires, trains and manages them for his billion dollar company. A recruiter at the home office sets up the interviews and he flies in and meets the candidates. He’s looking for a potential manager of-

fering a pretty terrific paying job with fast promotion opportunity. We spent a lot of time talking about mistakes that candidates make. And he wonders why smart people do the things they do. Apparently hiring a manager is much harder than you think. My cell phone started blowing up the next day as John is frustrated that one candidate calls and asks to reschedule. His wife is working and he can’t find childcare. I text back REALLY??? He replies, I’ve heard it before. Later that day he sends me his interviewing pet peeves. I laughed when he sent the frustrated face icon with a gun to its head. They are simple things – mistakes you should NOT be making. Yet they drove this decision maker crazy and prevented individuals from landing the job. So don’t make these blunders.
1. Asking about vacation time—this sure starts
the interview off on the wrong foot. It’s all about your needs and not about how you can do the job and be a good fit for the employer. Sell them that you are the right fit first, then once they offer you the job, bring up any needs you have for a pre-planned vacation.
2. Sounding Dull or Boring you need to be engaging, so pay attention to your tone. Maintain good eye contact with the person asking you the question and smile often.
3. Being Late

4. Inappropriate dress this was a Manager’s job – absolutely you needed to dress up and that means a suit and tie for a man; suit or pantsuit or professional dress for a woman. So many people think if the daily attire is business casual they can show up at the interview that way – it can cost you the job. Dressing up is the smart move.
5. Forgetting a copy of your resume never assume the interviewer has it with them. Bring several copies with you, plus a copy of your reference contacts so they can check them. It’s savvy to offer any letters of recommendations and work samples you can leave behind.
6. Completely clueless about company/position

you’ll never get hired if you don’t prepare. Do some research and spend some time digesting the company’s website. Review the products, services and different divisions. Look over the area you’d work in. If it’s a large company, glance at the annual report.
7. Not sending a thank you people are forgetting their manners. Handwritten notes sent via postal mail work best, but if timing is critical, email is ok too. Ask for a business card and you have all the info necessary to send this out immediately. Simple mistakes can sometimes make the difference between who gets the job—you or someone else. Let the other person be the one who goofs up – not you. © 2015 Robin Ryan all rights reserved. Switching Careers With an Accelerated Nursing Program
High salaries, rewarding work and excellent job prospects make nursing a great choice if you are stuck in a career rut and looking to make a change. Additionally, hundreds of universities around the U.S. have simplified the transition to nursing with accelerated nursing programs. These programs give secondcareer students with bachelor’s degrees ranging from business to botany a relatively quick path to getting started in the field.
ACCELERATED BACHELOR’S IN NURSING Accelerated bachelor’s programs are the most common way second-degree students enter the nursing field, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. These programs allow you to use courses completed during your previous degree to satisfy general education requirements and graduate in 12 to 18 months. Your total time commitment may be longer if you lack necessary science prerequisites, which you must complete before the program begins. Students in accelerated programs participate in supervised clinical hours just like traditional students, allowing them to gain hands-on experience while they study. Accelerated bachelor’s programs require a significant time commitment and dedication. The majority of students study fulltime and complete clinical requirements simultaneously. Upon
42
AUGUST 12, 2016
graduation, you must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses and obtain a license to practice through your state board of nursing before you begin work as a registered nurse. Though the number of accelerated programs has increased considerably over the past couple decades, competition for admission remains intense. The AACN reports that most programs require a GPA of at least 3.0 in your previous course of study and an entrance interview to gauge your ability to complete the rigorous program requirements.
GENERIC NURSING MASTER’S PROGRAMS Generic master’s programs are a type of accelerated nursing program that allows students to become advanced practice nurses. As an advanced practice nurse, you will have increased responsibilities and earning potential, performing many of the tasks traditionally completed by doctors. Master’s programs typically require three years of study. During the first year, you complete training to become a registered nurse, which is similar to the training provided in accelerated bachelor’s programs. After this initial year, your educational experience is similar to that of experienced nurses working toward a master’s of nursing. VOL. 21 ISSUE 1052
JOB OUTLOOK FOR SECOND-CAREER NURSES Health care organizations are expected to hire over 500,000 new registered nurses and nearly 200,000 new advanced practice nurses between 2012 and 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. These numbers represent employment growth much faster than the average for all occupations, indicating that jobs for qualified nurses will be plentiful. Rural areas and inner cities hold the best opportunities for new nurses. Upon entering the workforce, registered nurses earn an average annual wage of approximately $65,000, while advanced practice nurses earn more than $95,000, according to BLS wage surveys. The outlook for second-career nurses may be particularly sun-
ny. Interviews conducted by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing suggest that many hospital administrators prefer to hire nurses that have come from other professions, citing the perspective that comes from experience in multiple fields and the leadership potential that second-career nurses often possess. Switching to a career in nursing is not easy. The prospect of taking on a full-time schedule of classes and clinical hours while balancing family obligations is daunting, but for many, this is precisely the point of entering a second career: to seek out new and exciting challenges, face them head on and reap the rewards of their success.

WHY LESS WE SETTLE FOR
IN OUR CAREER
by Olivia Gamber
Recently I watched the Tony Robbins documentary, I am Not Your Guru and it blew my mind! Of course there were tears, laughs, and deep reflection that took place as I watched. One quote that still stuck with me from Tony was: “You only get what you settle for in life.” We may not realize it in the moment, but we make decisions to settle in our life
EVERY SINGLE DAY. 46
AUGUST 12, 2016
VOL. 21 ISSUE 1052
This could manifest in not going to the gym in the morning, hitting the snooze button a couple extra times, choosing to eat a burger instead of that salad for lunch, and deciding to zone out on social media instead of feeding our mind with knowledge. This all comes down to what we consider to be “should do’s” in our life vs. “MUST do’s.” Of course you SHOULD work out and you SHOULD eat a salad or you SHOULD take control of our career. How many of us have made a breakthrough change in our life by completely refusing to accept mediocrity and reframe these “shoulds” into “MUSTS?” To have an extraordinary life, you must have an extraordinary psychology. Unfortunately many of us choose to focus on our failures and relive those over and over in our mind. We let fear guide our decision making and never really get to see our full potential. We’ve convinced ourselves that we have done everything we can and we begin to accept our situation. Let me give you an example… Let’s consider your situation at your current company. Many times we assume that there are no opportunities for advancement because we don’t see any new job postings coming out. Then you convince yourself that you’re in a dead end job and you can’t leave because you make “pretty good money.” It doesn’t matter that you’re completely numb to your job and you’re no longer energized by the thought of going into that place one more time. As you commute to work you sit in traffic and put your mind into autopilot because it’s easier than trying to figure out exactly how to break out of this rut. We tell ourselves we are way too busy with family, cooking, cleaning, errands, and other obligations to make a significant positive change in our life. VOL. 21 ISSUE 1052
If you’ve already decided that you don’t have the time right now or that you’re stuck for now in your job, then is that really going to change in 6 months? Will it change in a year? What about 5 years?
Our brains are so powerful. When we really want to convince ourselves of something, then we will go to serious lengths to make that happen. They call this confirmation bias. We search for things that confirm our beliefs and we only focus on evidence that serves our already developed mental narrative. This makes it easy for us to decide to accept less than we really deserve. This makes it feel okay to put up with a job that doesn’t challenge us or help us grow. We don’t have to give away that power though. We can choose to raise those standards. We can choose to reframe those “shoulds” into “musts.”
We don’t have to settle. Where have you decided to settle recently in your life? Where have you considered convincing yourself of lowering your standards? About Olivia Gamber Olivia Gamber is a Partner at Career Attraction, an author, organizational psychologist, and she has led teams in corporate talent and learning and development. She has an insider’s perspective on the reasons why some people reach the top levels of corporate while other’s struggle to advance. http://www.careerattraction.com/why-we-settle-for-less-in-our-career/

YOU’RE A WHAT?
Kinesiotherapist Kathleen Green
W
hen Laura Hines began her career as a corrective therapist, the job title baffled people outside her workplace. “They’d ask, ‘Oh, you sell corrective shoes?’ or ‘You work in a correctional facility?’” she says. Her occupation later changed names, but that hasn’t clarified much. “Now we’re called kinesiotherapists,” says Laura, “and people are sometimes still confused.”
Kinesiology is the study of body movement mechanics. Kinesiotherapists use rehabilitative exercise, reconditioning, and physical education to treat patients who have problems moving in any way. The career field emerged during World War II as a form of exercise therapy to treat service members’ injuries so that they could return to active duty. Today, the physical reconditioning units where this therapy takes place are primarily in U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities, where current and former military personnel may seek treatment. Treatment is tailored to each patient’s needs and situation. For example, Laura had a patient with mobility problems who was limited to crawling in his own home. The patient could stand for only brief periods, so Laura created a plan that would help him rebuild strength gradually. “I started him on a treadmill for a few minutes at a time, because he needed to rest in between,” she says. Eventually, through reconditioning exercises with Laura’s guidance, the patient became fully mobile not just inside his house but out and about as well. Other duties. The American Kinesiotherapy Association offers professional registration for people who complete degree, instruction, and internship requirements and pass an exam. According to the association, most employers, including the VA, require that newly hired kinesiotherapists become registered and maintain registration through continuing education.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Working conditions vary for kinesiotherapists, depending on the type of work. According to the VA, most kinesiotherapists are employed by the Veterans Health Administration. Others work in establishments such as public and private hospitals or clinics, rehabilitation facilities, colleges and universities, and fitness or wellness centers. Employment and wages. The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not collect employment or wage data on kinesiotherapists; instead, it counts them among exercise physiologists.
According to the American Kinesiotherapy Association, there currently are about 500 registered kinesiotherapists in the United States. The association has no way of counting how many unregistered kinesiotherapists there are.
