Hourly, Salaried, Independent Contractor, Self-Employed UNDERSTANDING YOUR EMPLOYMENT STATUS IN A CHANGING WORLD by beconrad

W

hether you are working for a traditional employer or part of the new freelance and ondemand economy, it is important to understand the distinctions between the various kinds of employment statuses and how they affect your earnings, your taxes and your rights. The world of employment is changing, and keeping up with those changes is the best way to safeguard your career and your future earning potential. If you work for a traditional employer, chances are you are classified as either an hourly or a salaried employee. There are some key differences between the two job classifications, so it is important to find out which category you fall into. The best way to do that is to contact your human resources department or talk to your supervisor. If you are classified as an hourly employee, that means you are paid for every hour you work. In some cases, you may also qualify for sick and vacation time, over and above the hours you are actually on the job. Furthermore, hourly employees are generally entitled to overtime pay when they work more than 40 hours in a week, so you should be sure your paycheck reflects those extra hours. If you are employed in a professional or supervisory capacity, chances are your employer has classified you as a salaried worker. 19, 2016Salaried employees 32 AUGUST

are paid a set amount based on their job classification and employment category, and that amount typically does not change from pay period to pay period. In many cases, salaried employees are not entitled to the same overtime benefits as their hourly counterparts, but under some circumstances, overtime may be paid. Federal law entitles workers under a set earning threshold to overtime pay regardless of your job

...it is important to understand the distinctions between the various kinds of employment statuses and how they affect your earnings, your taxes and your rights. classification, so check with your supervisor or HR department to make sure you are being paid for all the hours you work. While most employees who work for large corporations and small businesses are classified as employees, others are classified as independent contractors. This distinction is an important one since it will impact everything from paid time off and overtime

pay to the amount of taxes you pay. If you are qualified as an independent contractor instead of an employee, you will generally be required to pay your own FICA taxes and keep track of the Federal and state income taxes you owe. The independent contractor designation can complicate your tax situation, so be sure you understand the ramifications before agreeing to work in this capacity. Many opportunities in the so-called gig economy are classified as independent contractors or self-employment, and it is important to be aware of this distinction. If you drive for Uber or Lyft, you are considered an independent contractor. If you do freelance work through sites like UpWork or Fiverr, you are working as an independent contractor. The businesses you work for will generally provide you with a statement showing how much you earned in the past year, and you will be responsible for paying your own taxes and calculating how much you owe the government. The world of work is changing rapidly, and those changes are likely to continue into the future. As the 21st century gets well underway, workers need to be more flexible than ever before, and they need to understand the impact of the various job classifications on their tax rates, their earning power and their future career goals. What I Learned About

Interviewing From Dating by Kevin Kermes

I’ve coached over a thousand people before interviews. While I don’t have quite that many dates under my belt, it’s always struck me how the two are so similar. From the outset, whether it’s a first date or an interview, there’s a mix of euphoria, anxiety and a thousand “what ifs.” And keeping all those things in check can be the difference between success and failure.

Here’s a step-by-step guide for getting through the interview jitters:

The First Date Without fail, when I prepare a client for an interview, they always start talking about what they’re missing or rehashing why they were fired/downsized/let go. Just like talking about your ex on a first date, this is a really bad place to start. Even if it’s just in your head, you run the risk of self-sabotage by steering the conversation in that direction. (Kind of like driving towards lights on the highway.)

36

Instead, focus on what you have in common with the other person and establish a reason for a second date. Just like you wouldn’t expect to rush to the altar after your first date, the initial interview is about getting to know one another. You want to give the interviewer reasons to want to bring

AUGUST 19, 2016

you back to learn more about you, not flag the waiter down for the check and sprint for the door. Remember, you want to define yourself as an expert with the ability to solve problems, not as simply a job seeker. Job seeking is a condition of your employment, not the value you bring as a new addition to a company. Moreover, it’s not why you’re going to get hired or a reason for the company to max out the compensation scale in your favor—just like being single isn’t the reason you score a second date.

Get Engaged, Get Interested Ever had dinner with someone who couldn’t stop talking about themselves? It kind of reminds me of telemarketers. Remember those guys? You’d pick up the phone in the evening and someone on the other end would verbally vomit on you. It didn’t matter what you needed. They had a product to sell and a script to push through. It wasn’t a conversation. Honestly, it wasn’t really even a sales pitch. It was more like force-feeding. Until, of course, you simply hung up on them—which is something you don’t want to have happen to you in an interview. So, don’t have an untargeted presentation of who you are and what you do. Ask a few questions so you can determine if they need what you have to offer. This way, you will add value and have a more meaningful conversation—which translates to better compensation. It will also let you both know whether or not the position truly is a good fit for you. Sometimes getting to “no” is more important than getting to “yes.” VOL. 21 ISSUE 1053

GENERAL

“I Won’t Be Ignored, Dan!” Bar none, my favorite quote from Fatal Attraction. No matter what character Glenn Close plays, I always envision Alex in the corner flipping that light switch on and off. Don’t let this be the image you leave people with when the process either doesn’t move at fast as you’d like or the company moves in another direction. When it comes to calling or emailing someone, there’s a fine line between pleasant persistence and outright stalking. I’ve written about turning rejection into opportunity and the importance of handling such situations well. I’ve experienced something similar with women I have dated when things didn’t work out (sometimes their choice, sometimes mine). No matter the reason, I’ve subsequently been set up by many exes with their friends because they considered me a “good guy.” That’s exactly how I met my wife, Jill. In interviewing, just like in dating, you spend a good amount of time and effort in building up a connection—possibly a relationship— with another person. To throw all that away because you aren’t chosen for a job is a really bad choice. Just like we rely on our friends’ suggestions and opinions when making decision, so works the hiring process. And, in this highly competitive market, having former interviewers out there spreading the good word about you is only going to make finding the right job that much easier.

Mother Is Elderly; Does She Need Long-Term Care Insurance?

What Is A Money Market Account? Dear Dave

Dear Dave, What exactly is a money market account? I’m trying to help my elderly mom with her finances. She has no debt and more than $1 million in assets. There was also another $500,000 trust left for her by my dad. With access to all this, does she still need long-term health insurance? Anonymous

Dear Julie, Money markets are short-term financial instruments. Money market accounts pay about the same, maybe a little bit more, than traditional savings accounts. If you get a money market account with a bank, you’ve basically got a savings account

INTRODUCTION Every year millions of people come to America’s national parks to see famous landmarks and enjoy the wildlife. Most of these visitors come during the warm months causing a human population explosion in some of the more popular parks. In order to make sure everyone remains safe and has a good time, the National Park Service hires around 10,000 seasonal workers. Many of those will be park ranger jobs.

W H AT D O E S A PA R K R A N G E R D O ? Although park rangers are considered as law enforcement agents, they are unique in the way hat they interact with the public that they vow to protect and serve. A park ranger is a guide, an educator, and an ambassador as well as a policeman. The range of skills and knowledge that he must possess is different from that of most officers. For example, a park ranger can act as a guide, conducting walks and giving talks about environmental protection, safety, and park resources.

He is expected to ensure friendly

compliance with park rules by demonstrating the correct way to build a campfire or explaining the importance of staying on trails. A ranger may also be called upon to conduct search and rescue operations or to help combat forest fires. But, like any other law enforcement agent, he is also authorized to carry firearms, make arrests, gather evidence and execute warrants.

W H AT I S S L E T P ? Since a park ranger is expected to possess a unique set of skills, even temporary employees must undergo a special training program designed just for this job. The National Park Service set up the Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program (SLETP) in 1977 to ensure that talented, trained applicants are available when they are needed. Several colleges around the nation offer this training. The core program as developed by the NPS requires 334 class hours. However, many schools conduct academies that offer more class hours so that students will not only be SLETP certified at the end of the course but also will be eligible for state or local law enforcement jobs. Students are responsible for paying the tuition at most of these training sites.

W I L L T H E N P S PAY F O R M Y T R A I N I N G ? Scholarships are available through the NPS ProRanger program. At the end of the second summer of this academic and internship program, the cadet will be sent to the NPS Law Enforcement Academy at Alamo College in Texas where he will receive his SLETP training. Opportunities abound for people interested in working as park rangers. The SLETP program has given them a structured way to begin their journey toward a career in this country’s most

Are You Sabotaging

Your Job Search? by Lynne Sarikas

If you’ve been on the job search for a while, panic can start to set in. Worries about paying the bills and advancing your career can cause you to lose focus — and inadvertently sabotage your own job search. What are you doing wrong? Here’s a list of potential landmines desperate job seekers fall prey to. Avoid them at all costs as you’re hunting for new work:

Follow Directions

attention to detail and land your letter and resume in the “reject” pile immediately. And finally, don’t send me your resume or cover letter in “edit” mode so I can see the changes you made.

Don’t Show Me Your Lack of Effort

Form letters are easy to spot. If you’re not interested enough in the job to customize a letter, I’m not interested in you, either.

If you can’t follow the directions in the hiring process, what makes an employer believe you’ll be able to follow directions on the job?

Don’t assume you know what the job responsibilities are based solely on the title. Read the job description and refer to the job accurately throughout your cover letter.

If a job ad asks you to attach a resume, do it. If it asks for references, provide them. Demonstrate that you’re prepared and capable of following directions.

Go online and check the company’s website. Demonstrate that you took some initiative and learned something about us. I happen to know that my name is all over my company’s website if you just look. The fact that an applicant has found it shows me some initiative rather than receiving yet another letter to “Dear Hiring Manager.”

Don’t Make Errors

As an employer, I have little patience when you attach the wrong cover letter indicating your interest in a different job at a different organization. I am not impressed with a lack of attention to detail. Blatant typosVOL. or grammatical 21 ISSUE 1053 errors also demonstrate poor

Don’t Cause Me Extra Work to Consider You

Many applicants don’t bother with a cover letter if the job ad doesn’t indicate one is required. They often feel their resume is all that’s needed and their experience AUGUST 19, speaks 2016 51

for itself. Guess again! Don’t make me try to understand how your experience relates to what I’m looking for, and definitely don’t expect me to figure out what it is you really want to do next and why.Write a customized cover letter to address what I’m looking for and how your particular experience fits my specific needs.

Don’t Apply for Every Open Position Because You Like the Company

It may be easy to apply to every position that shows up on your job board search, but don’t waste your time or mine. Read the job descriptions and apply only to positions for which you are at least partially qualified. Disregard this, and there’s a good chance HR reps will get tired of seeing your name on the list and may ignore you for all positions.

It’s NOT All About You

The current record I’ve found is 34 “I”s in a single cover letter. First of all, it’s not strong business writing to start nearly every sentence with “I.” More importantly, it is not all about you. I have a business need I am trying to fill, so your letter should demonstrate how you can help me address that need. It shouldn’t be a summary of your resume or a dissertation on what you really want or need.

Don’t Act Desperate

I’m very sorry you’ve been unemployed for a long time and that you’re worried about making your next rent payment. However, that isn’t reason enough for me to hire you. Acting desperate makes me think you just want any job and you’ll leave as soon as the job market improves. While I respect your personal issues, they are not going to influence my decision and really have no part in the interview discussion. And please don’t cry. It makes my heart break for you but, again, it isn’t a reason to hire you.

Don’t Skip Your Homework

All the information you need is available at your fingertips via the Internet, so there is absolutely no excuse for not doing your research.

52

AUGUST 19, 2016

Learn about my company or organization. Know what we do and who our customers are. See what you can learn about the department you’ll be interviewing with. Often you can also learn about the person interviewing you. Don’t come in and waste my time by asking what we do.

Don’t Ignore Me

If I go through the mountain of applications and identify a few for phone screens, you should be flattered if I pick you and step your preparations into high gear. Don’t ignore my request. Don’t wait more than 24 hours to respond. Demonstrate your interest and enthusiasm by being responsive.

Don’t Forget to Say Thank You

This is the easiest way to stand out from the competition. Say thank you to everyone who interviews you. Send a quick email thank you and follow it up with a handwritten thank you note. Personalize each note to reference something specific you discussed. This is a great opportunity to reaffirm your interest.

An Interview Invitation Doesn’t Mean You Got the Job

I’m not going to interview just one person. Don’t assume when I ask you to interview that you have the job. Leave the cocky attitude at the door. It has no place in an interview.

Don’t Forget to Network

If you claim to be so passionate about this organization or this particular role, who have you talked to who works here or in a similar organization? Who have you talked to in order to learn more about this role? Demonstrate your interest by showing initiative. Networking is the single most important thing you can do to land a job. (Like this thought? Tweet it!) Establish a network of contacts in your target companies so that when a job does post, you have someone who can deliver your resume and cover

letter to the hiring manager with a note of recommendation. It works!

ence and they end up being careless in the process, which only hurts them further.

You should be spending 10 times as many of your job search hours networking as submitting online applications. Simply put, networking works.

The only tried and true job search tactics — proven to work time and time again — are the ability to demonstrate attention to detail and to network like crazy. Master those skills, backing them up with pertinent experience and a genuine enthusiasm, and you’ll be well on your way to landing that next job.

Absolutely Don’t Blow Me Off

If you have an interview scheduled, either in person or by phone, you are expected to keep it. If for any reason you are not able to do so, you should call as much in advance as possible to notify the interviewer and ask for an opportunity to reschedule. If you’re not available for the scheduled appointment and I don’t hear from you at all until three days later, you’ve convinced me you do not have the customer service skills or common courtesy to work in my department.

While it may seem obvious that these are things to avoid in your job search, many job seekers quickly get frustrated with the process and take shortcuts. As their anxiety level rises, they often ramp up their efforts on the wrong things. Have a plan, review it periodically, but stick to it. Keep networking and stay focused. Avoid sabotaging your search efforts. Pay attention to the details to ensure success in your search. Unfortunately, people desperate for a job think sending more resumes to online postings increases their chances of getting a job. More often than not, when quantity goes up, quality goes down; it doesn’t make a differVOL. 21 ISSUE 1053
