Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY

Last Minute Shopping Dear Dave, I woke up this morning and realized I haven’t started Christmas shopping yet. I’ve been listening to you f or a long time, and I don’t want to fall in the trap this year of paying outrageous prices for things just because I have waited until the last minute. Can you give me some tips on how to save on Christmas gifts and not overspend? Ali Dear Ali, My first piece of advice is for next year. Decide now how much you want to spend on Christmas gifts and then divide that number by 12. Set aside that amount each month starting in Januar y, and then you won’t be in a panic when Christmas rolls around n e x t y e a r. P l a n n i n g a h e a d a l w a y s reduces stress when it comes to financial matters.

Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.

20 Issue 1019 26 Vol. December 18, 2015 - January 1, 2016

As for this year, my advice is to be aware of last-minute shopping traps. Many stores understand that people start getting desperate as Christmas d r a w s n e a r e r, a n d t h e i r p r i c e s reflect that. Also, stay away from the malls. Some folks may think I’m unAmerican for saying that, but I don’t care. Our culture has become one of shoppers who run to the mall, pay 120 percent of retail for something, and think they got a bargain because there was a sign that said SALE hanging over the table. Also, don’t be afraid to negotiate. It may not be comfortable at first, but you can find some great deals if you’re willing to do two things: pay cash and walk away. Once you get in the habit of approaching purchases this way it will become second nature—and fun!

Finally, there are great websites out there like eBay and coolsavings.com. Thinking differently and changing your gift-buying behaviors may be a little tough at first, but trust me, it’s worth the effort. Merr y Christmas, Ali! —Dave

Business License for A Seasonal Job? Dear Dave, I’m starting a side business of putting up Christmas lights for people. Will I need to get a business license? Jason Dear Jason, You might be getting a la te start with a business of this type, but if you manage your time and work hard you can still brighten people’s lives and make a little extra cash. Most towns don’t require a formal business license for this kind of thing, but you might want to check with your local municipality to be sure. It’s just quick seasonal work where you show up for a couple of hours and hang lights for someone, right? But if you started hiring people or doing something year round, you’d probably need a formal business license. Regardless, make sure you have a separa te checking account so you can keep track of the income and expenses associated with your work. Merr y Christmas, Jason! —Dave

7

steps to living the life of your dreams

For more than 20 years, I’ve had the honor of helping millions of families take control of their money and stop drowning in debt. It’s been awesome to see so many people change their lives! Early on, however, I noticed a pattern with the people I was counseling and the callers on my radio show. The thought of getting out of debt was overwhelming to them. The pile of debt in front of them seemed too big, and they didn’t know how to start. That’s why I created the Baby Steps. These seven money markers are designed to get you out of debt and show you how to build the kind of wealth you always dreamed of. But taking control of your money doesn’t happen overnight. The Baby Steps are based on the idea that you can accomplish anything if you take it one step at a time.

BABY STEP 1: SAVE $1,000 IN A BEGINNER EMERGENCY FUND

By Dave Ramsey

At that point, you have no debts other than the mortgage, and you have $10,000–15,000 in the bank just for emergencies. Life starts to feel a little different here, doesn’t it?

STEP 4: INVEST 15% OF HOUSEHOLD INCOME INTO RETIREMENT

With no debt and a big emergency fund, you’ve finally freed up your greatest wealth-building tool: your income. So now it’s time to focus on your retirement dream. Once you hit Baby Step 4, I want you to start investing 15% of your income into your 401(k) and Roth IRA.

STEP 5: COLLEGE FUNDING FOR CHILDREN

After you’ve gotten your retirement fund going strong, it’s time to think about college for the kiddos. I recommend the Education Savings Account (ESA). Most families can save up to $2,000 a year in an ESA. If you want to do more, you can also check out a 529, but only choose a 529 that leaves you in control of your investments.

Life happens. Transmissions blow and dryers burn out. An emergency fund takes care of these not-so-happy surprises. Don’t be one of the 60 percent of Americans who can’t cover unexpected expenses. Having $1,000 set aside just for emergencies puts a little buffer between you and the “Check Engine” light on your dashboard.

STEP 6: PAY OFF YOUR HOUSE

STEP 2: PAY OFF ALL DEBT WITH THE DEBT SNOWBALL

Baby Step 7 is my absolute favorite because it’s the most fun. With zero debt and a big emergency fund, you can now build wealth, give like crazy to good causes, and leave an incredible legacy for your family. This is the goal!

List all your debts except your house from smallest to largest by balance. Make minimum payments on all of them except the smallest one, and attack that one with a vengeance! Put every dollar you can get your hands on toward that smallest debt and get it out of your life for good! Once the first one is out of the way, take that money and add it to the next debt on the list. Keep going all the way down the list, one debt at a time. Every time you pay off one debt, you have more money to throw at the next one. That’s what we call it the Debt Snowball: As the snowball rolls over, it picks up more snow. By the time you get near the bottom of your debt list, it starts to look like an avalanche! You’ll be debt-free faster than you ever thought possible!

STEP 3: BUILD A FULLY FUNDED EMERGENCY FUND OF 3–6 MONTHS OF EXPENSES

Once you’re out of debt except your house, go back to that little emergency fund and beef it up to a full 3–6 months of expenses.

Now it’s time to reach for the golden ring. Keep going! Don’t stop now! How cool would it be if you actually owned your home instead of the bank? Then do it! Put every extra dollar in the budget toward paying off the mortgage early.

STEP 7: BUILD WEALTH AND GIVE

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from working with millions of families, it’s this: Your situation isn’t hopeless. With a lot of hard work and determination, anyone can get out of debt and build wealth. Because when you live like no one else, you can truly live and give like no one else. *Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. He’s authored five New York Times best-selling books: Financial Peace, More Than Enough, The Total Money Makeover, EntreLeadership and Smart Money Smart Kids. “The Dave Ramsey Show” is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations. Who’s working at sunset—or at 2 a.m.? Lots of people, including reporters, nurses, and police officers.

FOR NIGHT OWLS AND EARLY BIRDS In the evening

Most workers clock in during the day. But night owls and early birds have a place in the workforce, too. If you start feeling productive after dusk, for example, you might want to look for jobs with evening hours. Or maybe you feel most energetic before dawn, when many people are still in bed. Whatever your preference, there may be work options to fit that schedule. Keep reading to discover which workers often have nonstandard hours.

When people work & what they do Workers are most likely to be on the job between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data show. (See chart 1.) However, some work atypical hours. For example, about 29 percent of workers were on the clock at 7 a.m. At 9 p.m., about 12 percent of workers were on the job. By 2 a.m., that percentage fell to 3 percent. In order to examine when people work and what they do, we divide hours of work into three selected groups: • In the evening (between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.) • Through the night (between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.) • Early in the morning (between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m.). Although this article puts occupation groups into 1 of 3 categories, there is often overlap in hours worked. For example, many food preparation and serving workers are on the job late at night. But some, such as coffee shop employees, might work very early in the morning—or at other times. Similarly, occupations that involve working through the night frequently have relatively high percentages of workers on the clock in the evening and early morning. And occupation groups that offer nonstandard hours usually have jobs with standard hours, too. Some healthcare workers may be on the job in the evening, through the night, or in the early morning, for example—but plenty of others in this group work during the day. Charts highlight the percentages of workers in an occupation group working on their main job during the selectedVol. hours. Illustrative examples are given for each 20 Issue 1019 December 18, 2015 - January 1, 2016 occupation group.

38

Restaurants and bars, hotels, movie theaters, casinos, and other entertainment venues regularly hire people to work between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Evening work also may be common at places such as nail salons and retail establishments. The occupation groups shown in chart 2 often have higher-thanaverage percentages of workers on the clock during the evening.

Arts, design, entertainment, sports & media. Musicians, directors, and broadcast technicians are among the workers who help to entertain or inform audiences into the evening.

Food preparation and serving related.

Waiters and waitresses, bartenders, and fast-food workers are some of the occupations in this group that are often on the job during evening hours. This occupation group had high percentages of workers who, for example, covered the dinner shift at restaurants and other eating places.

Personal care & service.

After work, many people try to find time for leisure or personal care activities. As a result, workers such as hairdressers, fitness trainers, and skincare specialists frequently are on the job at 6 p.m. or later.

Sales & related.

This group had a relatively high percentage of people working earlier in the evening. But because many stores close by 10 p.m., the percentage was lower than average at that time. Examples of occupations in the group are retail sales workers, real estate sales agents, and cashiers. Continued on 44

Through the night

Early in the morning

Continued from 38

Between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m., most people are sleeping. But certain jobs may involve working through the night.

Early risers might consider the occupation groups in chart 4, which often have higher-than-average percentages of workers on the clock between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m.

Police and fire departments, manufacturing plants, hospitals and nursing homes, and transportation and warehousing companies are some of the places where people toil into the wee hours of the morning. In fact, because these establishments frequently operate nonstop, people in these jobs might be working at almost any hour.

Places where workers might get a jump start on the day include farms and ranches, construction sites, and utilities companies. In the occupation groups shown in the chart, high percentages of workers are also on the job beginning at 9 a.m. What sets these workers apart from other daytime workers is the earlier hour at which they begin their days.

Healthcare practitioners and technical. Doc-

Workers in this group don’t start quite as early as some others in this section, but at 7 a.m. more than one-third of architecture and engineering workers were at their jobs—a number greater than the average for all workers. Occupations in this group include architects, petroleum engineers, and civil engineering technicians.

tors, nurses, and paramedics are a few of the many occupations in this group that are needed to care for patients at all hours of the day and night.

Healthcare support.

Providing patient or animal care might involve nighttime hours for some healthcare support workers. Examples of those who might work through the night are nursing assistants, psychiatric aides, and veterinary assistants.

Production.

To maximize output, many facilities operate continuously. They employ workers in multiple shifts, including overnight, to keep production going. Occupations in this group that might require night shifts include bakers, assembly line workers, and machinists.

Protective service.

Firefighters, police officers, and security guards are among the protective service workers who have all-night shifts to ensure public safety.

Transportation and material moving.

These workers help to move people and goods throughout the country—often while others sleep. Truck drivers, air traffic controllers, and conveyor operators are some of the occupations in this group in which workers are needed at night.

For more information

Architecture and engineering.

Construction and extraction.

Carpenters, equipment operators, and roofers are just a few of the many types of construction and extraction occupations that may involve early morning hours. Although relatively small percentages of workers in this occupation group were on the clock at 4 a.m. or 5 a.m., more than half of all construction and extraction workers were on the job by 7 a.m.

Farming, fishing, and forestry.

To accomplish their many daily tasks, such as tending to animals or crops, workers in this occupation group often must start at or before daybreak. Agricultural equipment operators, ranchers, and fishing workers are examples of occupations in the group that may require early hours.

Installation, maintenance, and repair.

Equipment can break or malfunction at any time of day. When that happens, people usually want to have it fixed as soon as possible. This requirement creates early morning job opportunities for workers such as aircraft mechanics, industrial machinery mechanics, and telecommunications equipment repairers.

The data in this article comes from the American Time Use Survey, which provides a snapshot of how people in the United States spend their time. The percentages shown in the charts are annual averages for 2011–14. They measure employed people ages 15 and older who were working at their main job on days they worked. Read more about this survey in the American Time Use Survey user’s guide. Learn about the occupations mentioned in this article—and many others—from the Occupational Outlook Handbook. The U.S. Department of Labor has resources on night and shift work, including information about wage laws and potential hazards. Contact your state Labor Market Information office for local statistics related to occupations in this article that have high percentages of workers on the clock at nonstandard hours.

before applying for work again? If so, make note of them as you start thinking about your career goals. Prepare for re-entry

After you identify your skills, interests, and goals, you’ll want to find jobs to match. First, visit a career center to study your local job market and learn what opportunities exist in it. Then, figure out what you need to do to be qualified for one of those jobs. Learn about the job market

Depending on how long you’ve been out of the workforce, you might discover that much has changed. “It’s important to research the marketplace and see what’s out there,” says career coach Barb Garrison. “Don’t assume it’s the same as when you were last in it.” The Internet is an important research tool (see box), especially for learning about what may have changed in the workplace. For example, some job tasks previously performed by workers are now done by technology. Other jobs may have increased skill requirements. And new occupations may have emerged that did not exist before. Consult references that give you an idea of what kinds of occupations there are and what they involve. Consider your interests, skills, experience, and goals, as well as other factors that may be important to you, such as a preferred work schedule. Once you have enough background information, start reading local job postings. Get an idea of what types of workers employers are looking for and the skills and education required to do the job. And ask people you know about their jobs. Find out what skills they use, what their workplaces are like, and what education or training they needed to get hired. Consider doing informational interviews to learn more about occupations or specific jobs. “Informational interviews will help you narrow down what kinds of roles are suited for you and what types of companies you are interested in,” says Alvarado. You’ll also want to familiarize yourself with the job market in your area. Check job listings, and if you need to beef up your skills, look for available education or training opportunities. Above all, be proactive. “Waiting is not a job search strategy,” says Miller. “Companies hire people without waiting to post a job. Go ahead and get in touch.”

Trying to find a job can be a job in itself. You’ll need to network and seek out job openings that interest you. You’ll also need to tailor your resume or application and prepare a cover letter to submit for advertised job vacancies. Finally, you’ll want to prepare yourself for the interview that will land you a job.

For example, Garrison had a client who joined a yoga group while she was looking for healthcare-related work. A man in the group worked at a sleep clinic and was able to put Garrison’s client in touch with people in the industry who were hiring. Although the client hadn’t considered working at a sleep clinic, her personal connection with the yoga contact made the work interesting to her.

Network

ApplY

Developing a network is an important component of your job search. Many career counselors believe that job vacancies are filled primarily through word of mouth, so every hour devoted to networking is time well spent toward finding employment. When Alvarado is looking to hire someone, for example, she reaches out to her network to see if anyone in it knows who might be qualified. “Like most employers,” she says, “I’d rather hire someone that one of my colleagues can vouch for than someone

When applying for jobs, target your search. Don’t try to force your qualifications into a description that doesn’t really suit you; even if you were to get the job, you probably wouldn’t enjoy the work. Instead, find openings that really interest you, even if it means applying for fewer of them. “If you’re sending out 50 resumes a week and you don’t hear back on any of them, not only does that hurt your confidence, but it’s also not a very targeted strategy,” says Alvarado. “It’s better to send out one resume per week to something that really aligns with your interests, skills, and strengths.”

G ett ing hi red

none of us knows personally.” Being proactive about meeting as many people as possible is especially important if you’re reentering the job market after an absence. “If you’ve been out of the workforce for a while, your skills or experience may not be current, so someone is going to have to take a risk on you,” says Miller. “Someone’s willingness to take that risk is more likely when there’s a personal relationship.” Start networking by reconnecting with former colleagues and supervisors. They may know of positions available or of someone who is hiring. If not, they still may be willing to serve as references on your applications or to connect you with other people to help you expand your network. “Talk to everyone you know, not just people who are doing what you want to do,” says Garrison. “Ask them about their work and how they got into it.” Joining a professional association, community organization, or hobby group is another way to network. Participating informally can be beneficial. “Casual activities create a more relaxed atmosphere when you’re talking to people,” says Garrison. “You never know where you’ll find your next contact.”

Treat the process of applying for positions the way you would an actual job: as work. Career counselors suggest creating a routine for yourself in which you get up in the morning and, for several hours, review job listings, make phone calls, and submit applications. In the evening, you might participate in a networking event, volunteer with an organization, or attend a social club. But take the whole process seriously, and use your time wisely to help further your search. Resumes. Counselors recommend tailoring your resume or application to every position for which you submit one. Use words from the job posting to describe your skills and achievements. “Be sure that you have an example of something you’ve done for each element listed in the ad,” says Miller. “You should be able to say, ‘Let me tell you about the time…’ for each one.” Cover letters. Writing a cover letter is voluntary, but it can be an important part of the application process. It allows you to introduce yourself to employers andbegin to tell them your story. “The point of a cover letter is not to land a job,” says Garrison. “It’s to get the employer interested enough in you to want to continue the conversation in an interview.” You might be tempted to use the cover letter to discuss your absence from the workforce, but some career counselors recommend sticking to highlights of your skills, experience, and goals. Although

you may feel the need to explain your absence, counselors say, it’s best to leave that until an interview gives you the opportunity to elaborate and answer followup questions. Interview

In job interviews, it’s important to look professional, arrive early, and be polite. Before the interview, rehearse what you want to say about yourself, your interests, and your goals as they relate to the job. Also rehearse what you want to say about your time off from the workforce. Don’t be afraid to explain your choices; career counselors say that disclosing them with confidence can make a good impression on prospective employers. “It’s common to have time off from work these days,” says Alvarado. “It’s all about how you talk about it.”

Employers might ask personal questions, some of which are illegal— such as those about your religion, your plans to have children, or your health. You are not required to answer these types of questions, but some career counselors suggest using the opportunity to show your commitment to the job. “Try to reframe the question by saying something like ‘If you’re worried about my ability to be here during work hours, don’t be. I have demonstrated my ability to show up on time at my volunteer position at the food kitchen,’ or whatever the issue is,” says Severy. When going to an interview, remember to bring information on your salary history and contact information for your references, as well as copies of your resume and cover letter. Finally, be sure to follow up after an interview with a thank-you note that reiterates your interest in the position and inquires about what’s next. “These small gestures can really set you apart from other candidates,” says Garrison. The Early Bird Gets…Free Tuition?

GENERAL

Lone Star College-Montgomery’s ‘Registration Celebration’ Early Registration Contest Winner Announced CONROE – For some Lone Star College-Montgomery students, the greatest perk for early registration is having the best selection of classes for the upcoming semester. But for student Joshua Uduebor, the greatest perk for registering early is walking away with his spring semester tuition paid for. Uduebor, a freshman economics major, was the grand prize winner in the college’s Registration Celebration promotion, an oncampus, express registration event held last month at the college. “I never expected something like this to happen to me,” said Uduebor. “I thank God and LSC-Montgomery for blessing me with such an amazing opportunity. I am extremely thankful to the administrative system for awarding such a tremendous thing to me as a student, and my family and I really appreciate this.” During the first few days of Registration Celebration, advisors, counselors, and faculty members were stationed in several hightraffic locations to assist students in signing up for the spring semester, which begins Monday, January 19.

Over 3,500 students registered during the first two days of Registration Celebration–approximately 25 percent of students enrolled in the fall, which helps the college to better manage enrollment and serve students during the latter stages of the enrollment period. “The number one goal is to help our students be successful,” said Dr. Rebecca Riley, president of LSC-Montgomery. “Events like Registration Celebration get our current students positioned for success in the upcoming semester, and it allows us to spend more time advising those students who need it most.” During the two-week winter break (December 19-January 3), limited advising services are available from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Library (Bldg. F) and in the Student Services Center (Bldg. C) on the following days: Mon.-Wed., Dec. 21-23, and Mon.-Wed., Dec. 28-30. The offices re-open for normal business in the Student Services Center (Bldg. Santa YOU’RE a WHAT?

Shopping Centers. Phil estimates that he sees between 350 and 400 kids each day at the theme park during the Christmas season.

In the off season, Phil still works at the theme park. He also does other Santa-related work. For example, Phil has used his Santa expertise to consult for movies and television. He’s also participated in a Santa Claus documentary and writes books on the subject. Phil’s year-round work makes him different from most other professional Santas. Some Santas might do other Santa-related work throughout the year, such as playing Santa in print or television advertising or in acting roles. But because the holiday season is so short, many Santas have other, unrelated jobs.

or Phil Wenz, playing Santa Claus is not play at all. It’s his job.

Phil has been dressing up as Santa Claus for nearly 50 years. “It started when I was 4 years old,” he says. “I asked my mother to make a Santa suit for me. I’ve worn one every year since.” As a teenager, Phil dressed up as Santa to visit patients at a local hospital. He continued to play Santa in parades and other events, eventually landing a full-time Santa job at a Christmas theme park in Dundee, Illinois. Professional Santas like Phil entertain children and adults during the holiday season at all types of events. They work at shopping malls or stores; entertain crowds at parades and tree lightings; and make appearances at holiday parties, charity events, and people’s homes. Most Santas work during the Christmas holiday season, which usually lasts from late November through December 25. Santas at shopping malls or department stores Vol. 20 Issue 1019 often December work 10-hour and see more than 150 chil18, 2015shifts - January 1, 2016 dren each day, according to the International Council of

Professional Santas spend a lot of time getting ready for the part. The physical transformation into Santa can take up to 2 hours. First, Santas apply makeup to high-light their rosy cheeks. Next, they make sure to have clean teeth and fresh breath. Santas then groom or apply their whiskers. Naturally bearded Santas must trim and sometimes bleach their beards, whereas clean-shaven Santas apply fake beards with special glue. Phil has six fake beard sets that he rotates; each is handmade and cost up to $1,500. Finally, Santas put on the famous red suit—which can have up to 100 pounds of padding. The suit includes pants, suspenders, a coat, boots, and, of course, the Santa hat. “When you walk out of that dressing room,” says Phil, “you have to be Santa.” And although they are known for their bowl-full-of-jelly physiques, it is important that Santas keep in shape. Their work can involve hours of sitting with few opportunities to move around or stretch. Long periods of inactivity can lead to health risks, meaning that physical fitness must be a priority. “Nutrition is important,” stresses Phil. “You have to take care of yourself and be healthy.” There are no formal educational requirements for becoming a professional Santa. However, aspiring Santas often develop their skills by attending schools, conventions, or workshops. Santa schools typically last a few days, charge tuition, and include detailed instruction on topics such as beard maintenance, communication skills, and sleigh flying. Santa conventions take place all over the world and

offer both beginner and experienced Santas the opportunity to mix and mingle. Santa workshops occur throughout the year and offer classes and lectures on a variety of Christmas-related topics. Phil directs a free Santa workshop in appropriately named Santa Claus, Indiana. The workshop brings together several hundred first-time and veteran Santas from around the world to share their experiences and learn new skills. It features carol singing, guest speakers, and presentations. Phil presents a lecture on the history of Santa Claus and gives tips on how to deal with feisty children. Part of the value in attending these events is the opportunity for newer Santas to pick up ideas from veteran ones. “Aspiring Santas can learn from the people who are good at this and have been doing this for a long time,” says Phil. One thing aspiring professional Santas must learn is good communication skills. Another is being able to improvise and think quickly—“a little bit vaudeville, a little bit creativity,” as Phil puts it. Professional Santas also should be enthusiastic about the holiday season and aware of Christmas traditions from around the world. In addition, the best professional San-tas are jovial and love to be around people, especially children. Santas must be patient and understanding when dealing with crowds of all ages—including parents. “Remember, you are the world’s oldest senior citizen,” Phil says. “Everyone is a child to you.” Expert knowledge of Santa is important, because curious children often ask questions about Santa and Mrs. Claus, the elves, the reindeer, and the North Pole. “Santa is 1,700

years old,” says Phil, who is an expert in Santa history. Other crucial knowledge for Santas includes familiarity with the latest toys that kids might be asking for. Most professional Santas like the freedom that comes with being their own boss and setting their own hours. But working independently requires a lot of motivation and self-discipline. As self-employed workers, professional Santas are responsible for promoting themselves and finding their own jobs. They also incur a lot of business expenses, such as getting professional photographs and buying personal liability insurance. However, making these investments can help Santas find work more easily. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not specifically track the employment and wages of professional Santas. Most find seasonal work in shopping malls, stores, or photography companies. Professional Santas are often hired through referrals, so meeting other Santas can be an important source of work. “Get involved with a Santa group or charity,” says Phil. “They are great network-ing opportunities.” Anecdotal evidence suggests that the earnings of professional Santas vary consider-ably, depending on the type of employer and duration of the work. The most lucrative work reportedly comes from contracts with shop-ping malls and photography companies, from which a professional Santa can earn up to $20,000 in one holiday season. But after almost half a century of playing Santa, it is not about the money for Phil. He still finds it incredibly rewarding. “If you’ve had a good day,” he says, “you have made countless people happy and created a lot of memories.” Sara Royster is an economist in the Office of Occupational Statistics and Employment Projections, BLS.
