DO BOTH FOR CHRISTMAS

SNAKES BITE!

Dear Dave,

Dear Dave,

We have three preschool grandchildren, and they get tons of stuff for Christmas every year. We’re in really good shape financially and would like to do something for their future this year instead of giving a toy that might get thrown in the corner. Do you have any suggestions?

My wife and I are building a home, and we found a great entertainment center we both love. It costs $6,000, and the dealer said he would give us 10 percent off if we take out a store credit card. We have the cash to buy the piece, but we were wondering if it would be a good idea to get the card and use it for the entertainment center and Christmas gifts, then pay it off immediately.

Va l e r i e

Ty l e r D e a r Va l e r i e ,

D e a r T y l e r,

I’d do both. You don’t want to be those grandparents who only hand envelopes at Christmas to 4-year-olds. No, they need things to play with. They’re kids and they should be allowed to act like kids and be happy at Christmas. The good news is you can do both without spending an arm and a leg.

I hate to burst your bubble, but I’m pretty skeptical about this idea. I know it sounds good on the surface, but the problem is the vast majority of people don’t have the discipline to follow through on a plan like this. Another issue is a lot of places like this hit you with a fee when you pay off the card, the thing runs over, then you get another fee, and so on.

In addition to a few special toys, perhaps you could work with their parents to launch Educational Savings Accounts (ESAs) for them. This would get their college funds started, and it’s what we do. We use mutual funds in their ESAs, where each child is allowed to have up to $2,000 contributed in their name per year.

I’d just call the manager out of his office and let him know that unless he discounts the entertainment center $600 I’m going to his competitor. No, there’s no way I’d take out a stupid credit card at this place whether I had the cash on hand or not.

The beauty of the ESA with the mutual fund inside is that it’s growing completely tax-free. You have to name a custodian of the account until the child turns 18, and that could be you guys or their parents. Just make sure that together you don’t over fund the ESAs and cause yourselves tax problems.

Tyler, you need to learn right now it’s a bad idea to play with snakes. Stop screwing around with debt products, okay? Everyone thinks they’re the exception to the rule or they’re somehow winning or getting rich by doing stuff like this, but it doesn’t work. They’re trying to hook you, man!

Merry Christmas, Valerie!

— Dave

HOW TO WORK ON Container ships play a vital role in global commerce, helping companies move cargo on major waterways throughout the world. The continuing expansion of international trade is putting increased demand on the global container fleet and its seamen. Many jobs aboard container vessels are physically demanding and require personnel to remain at sea for extended periods of time, but entry-level merchant mariners are well-paid, have ample opportunity for advancement, and have the opportunity to travel to major cities throughout the world.

PREPARING YOURSELF FOR A JOB 1. Be physically fit. Jobs on container ships are extremely physically demanding, so you must be prepared to be on your feet for long hours, lift and carry heavy items, and perform various other physical tasks, depending on the kind of job you accept. 2. Be prepared to be at sea for an extended period of time. In addition to being physically strong, you should be mentally prepared to work long hours, spend most of your time in confined quarters with the other crew members, and be away from your family for weeks or even months at a time. You may end up at sea for longer than expected if there is bad weather, a mechanical problem, or even a strike at one of your ports. 3. Get a passport. A job on a container ship will likely require you to travel all over the world. It's best to have your passport well in advance of your job search so you don't have to worry about it. 4. Understand the roles on the ship. Most jobs on a container ship fall into three departments: the engine room, the deck, and the galley. Crewmen in the engine department are responsible for repairing and maintaining all mechanical and electrical components of the ship. Crewmen on the deck are responsible for navigation, security, and maintenance, depending on their rank. Crewmen in the galley are responsible for preparing and serving meals and cleaning. If you have experience as a cook, engineer, mechanic, firefighter, nurse, or doctor, you may be able to transition into the maritime industry without first performing entry-level jobs. 5. Decide which entry-level job is right for you. If you don't have any experience working at sea or any special training, you will need to start your career in an entry-level position. All of these positions offer the opportunity to advance to higher level positions once you have the appropriate level of experience. Some 38 DECEMBER 2 2016

of the most common entry-level container-ship jobs include: ORDINARY SEAMAN (OS): This is an entry-level deck job. An OS will learn fundamental seamanship during a specified training period. Ordinary seamen will grease lashing gear, chip rust, and paint fixtures. As they gain experience, new deckhands are given additional responsibilities. Eventually, an OS can expect to be designated as an Able Bodied Seaman, or AB. AB duties include lookout watches, handling tow lines, and making security rounds. WIPER: New engine room personnel start as wipers and perform a wide range of functions, including basic maintenance, cleaning, and inventory. A wiper usually moves into a position as a qualified man of the engine department, or QMED. QMEDs perform a range of functions, including maintaining and repairing the engine and auxiliary-power systems. STEWARD UTILITY: New galley hands start their maritime careers in utility roles, which include dish washing, laundry, and housekeeping. These crewmen often later become stewards, which involves helping with meal preparation and supervising other galley personnel.

GETTING THE PROPER CREDENTIALS 1. Apply for a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). The first step towards attaining the credentials that you will need to work on a U.S. container ship is to apply for a TWIC, which is issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). You must submit an online application and then visit a TSA office to present identification and immigration documents, get fingerprinted, and have your picture taken. You will have to pay a fee of $128 when you submit your application. Discounts are available for individuals with a hazardous materials endorsement on their license or with a Free and Secure Trade card. You will not be granted a TWIC if you have been convicted of certain crimes, including espionage, treason, terrorism, and murder. 2. Obtain a Merchant Mariner's Credential (MMC). Everyone working on a U.S. container ship must receive an MMC, which is issued by the U.S. Coast Guard. The MMC is a photo ID that lists a crewman's qualifications, grade, and endorsements, which will dictate what kind of jobs you are allowed to hold on a container ship. Depending on the endorsements you apply for, you will have to pay a fee of $45-$140 for your MMC. To apply for a Merchant Mariner's Credential, you must do the following: Submit proof of U.S. citizenship, permanent resident status, or VOL. 21 ISSUE 1068

A CONTAINER SHIP foreign citizenship. Foreign citizens are only granted MMCs by the United States Coast Guard if they are enrolled in the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Be at least 16 (with parental consent for minors). Pass a background check. If you have a criminal record, the Coast Guard will consider your eligibility on a case-by-case basis. Either currently hold or be in the process of applying for a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). Pass a physical exam. Requirements are different for entrylevel and qualified individuals, so make sure you submit the appropriate form. Pass a drug test. Submit proof of previous experience at sea and successful completion of the appropriate examinations for your desired endorsement and grade. This is not necessary for entry-level endorsements. 3. Earn your STCW credentials. A certificate in Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) will allow you to work on vessels that operate in the oceans worldwide. If you have an MMC but not your STCW credentials, you will only be permitted to work on inland waters in the United States or in the Gulf of Mexico within 12 miles of the shore. Entry-level crewmen must complete a five-day Basic Safety Training class that covers basic firefighting techniques, survival skills. basic first aid, and personal safety and social responsibilities. Higher level positions will require additional training. The cost of the complete five-day program is $1025 at New England Maritime, but the cost may be different at other institutions.

GETTING A JOB 1. Do an apprenticeship. There are apprenticeship programs available for individuals who want to work their way up from entry-level positions to qualified positions quickly. This is a great option if you are hard-working and career-driven, but have no experience working at sea. 2. Join a union. Once you have the proper credentials, you might want to consider joining one of the many shipping unions in the United States. Your union can help you with job placement, and can also be a great way to network with other people in your industry.[8] You do not need to be a member of a union to get a job on a container ship. If you encounter long waiting lists, you may be better off looking for a non-union job. 3. Apply with shipping companies. If you decide not to do an apprenticeship or join a union, look for your first job on a container ship by searching through online job boards and classified ads. Apply for positions by submitting a resume that outlines your skills and experience, as well as a cover letter that explains why you would be a good fit for the job. 4. Try asking around. If you are in a busy port city, you might be able to find a job simply by visiting the ports and asking captains if they have any job openings. Have your credentials with you in case one of them says yes. 5. Work your way up. Once you have a job on a container ship, you will need to decide if you want to advance in your maritime career. If you enjoy the work and would like increased responsibilities, you will need to gain experience and fulfill the necessary requirements to obtain additional licenses and endorsements to your credentials.[10] The precise requirements for licensing and endorsement will depend on the kind of job you want to hold. Check with the U.S. Coast Guard to find out what examinations and other requirements you will have to fulfill in order to meet your career goals.

4. Consider a bachelor's degree. If you would like to start working in a higher level position, consider attending a four-year maritime Tipsacademy. When you graduate, you will hold a bachelor's degree New deckhands complete programs oftenEngibecome ABs or QMEDs within a year. and a licensewho to serve as a apprenticeship Third Mate or Third Assistant Source: wikihow.com Fill neer. out all of your applications carefully. An incomplete application will cause delays in your approval for your STCW or MMC.

What

Says In Your

BY HEATHER EAGAR

Did you know that the way you sit, smile and shake hands can speak volumes during a job interview? It’s true. There is no manual to read to determine how you should manage your body language; however, if you make certain gestures, you’re definitely sending a certain message.

B O J VIEW!! R

E INT 44

DECEMBER 2 2016

So how can you know what message you’re sending with the body language you’re using? Here is a quick guide to give you some ideas of what you’re saying with your gestures.

Crossing Your Legs While crossing your legs during an interview seems to be a polite and professional gesture, some experts beg to differ. In fact, this action actually sends a message of complacency, which is not what you want to communicate to your interviewer. This is why it is advised that you instead plant both feet firmly on the floor. It demonstrates confidence in who you are.

Cracking Your Knuckles If you have body tics, like cracking the joints in your neck or fingers, it may betray your nerves. While you want to show humility in your interview, you never want to let them see you sweat. However, if you’re busy nurturing nervous tics like twirling your hair or fidVOL. 21 ISSUE 1068 dling with your cufflinks, you may show

Your

Interviews more nervousness than intended. If you know that this is a potential issue for you, it’s good to practice sitting in the interview without making nervous gestures. You can make sure to clasp your hands so you don’t allow them to move around. This may help you keep your nervous tendency under control.

Folding Your Arms Did you know that folding your arms in any situation sends a message that you’re closing yourself off from the person you’re communicating with? This means, if you fold your arms in an interview, you’re sending the interviewer the message that you’re not inviting him or her in. In other words, you can appear to be an unfriendly person, which could potentially X you out of the job. VOL. 21 ISSUE 1068

Leaning Back in Your Chair When in an interview, it’s not a good idea to lean back in your chair. This gives the impression that you’re overly relaxed and disinterested in the job. It can also make you appear untidy. To remedy this, sit a little bit forward in your chair. This helps you present yourself as alert and eager to answer any questions thrown your way.

Invading the Interviewer’s Space If you’re the friendly type, you may be unaware if you ever invade an interviewer’s space; however, doing so should be avoided. An example would be if you are sitting on the other side of the interviewer’s desk then stretch your hands or body over the desk. Since this desk is a per-

sonal space for the interviewer, you don’t want to invade this space. If you do, you could come across as unprofessional and disrespectful. There are many other gestures that you may subconsciously make that create a strong message. If you’re not sure of your own mannerisms, you can set up a mock interview and either have a friend tell you about your body language, or videotape it and play it back. The more you’re aware of the message you’re sending, the more you can improve your interviewing skills. REV UP YOUR JOB SEARCH WITH AUTOMOTIVE JOBS BY: GEORGE PERRY When you think about automotive jobs, a few images usually come to mind: winding assembly lines moving with clock-like precision, well heeled salesmen strolling the lot with customers in tow, and even crash test dummies – not the monotone ‘90s one-hit wonder band – the life-saving impact testers. This incomplete picture only scratches the surface. Think about this: Despite an always-expanding public transportation system, the number of cars in the United States has increased every year since 1960. Currently, there are about 250 million registered cars on American highways, country roads and tucked into garages, according to the Department of Transportation. That equals a ton of jobs. (And it equals 500 million tons of car.) In the hourly job industry alone, there’s a great variety of automotive positions, jobs that are increasingly available online through job websites like jobsparx.com. Contrary to popular belief, these auto gigs aren’t just Detroit jobs; you’re just as likely to find Houston jobs and Seattle jobs in the automotive industry. And the demand for auto technicians and customer service workers in companies such as Goodyear, Jiffy Lube and Valvoline is especially high. If you’re a hands-on worker with a high mechanical I.Q. and you don’t mind the smell of 10W-30 oil in the morning, then these gigs could be right up your alley. As an auto technician, you're also going to need to perform a fair share of customer service. Whether you're collecting info from customers about what's wrong with their car or you're explaining the diagnosis and available options, youDECEMBER should 2be comfortable talking to and interacting with 2016 46

strangers. And for when you're calling to tell drivers that they need a new transmission, practice delivery of this key phrase, "The good news is the glove compartment works…” Heck, if you don’t know how to fix a car but you sure love driving one, then you might want to look for a job that puts you behind the wheel. Check out companies including 1-800-GOT-JUNK? and FedEx for driver job opportunities. Of course, there’s also the pizza delivery route, too, if you have your own reliable transportation. If you don’t know how to fix a car but you want to learn how, you’re also in luck. Many auto industry employers offer paid training – training you can use in the real world. Wouldn't it be nice to know if a mechanic is trying to stick it to you, or even better, if you could save loads of cash by maintaining and fixing your vehicle on your own? On-the-job training not only improves your skills, it also gets you working in the car repair industry sooner. And the more you know the more valuable you become to your current employer (plus it makes your next job search easier). Ever since Henry Ford rolled the first Model T off the assembly line in 1908, hard working Americans have earned their keep in the automotive industry. And while movies and sci-fi writing teased us about streets full of hover skateboards and push-button teleporting, that’s not going to change anytime soon.
