DYING CAR, OR KILL THE STUDENT LOAN? Dear Dave, I’m 38 years old, and I’ve got $12,000 in student loans still hanging over my head. It’s the only debt I have. I make $30,000 a year, and I’ve managed to save $12,000, but I’m also driving a junky, old car that will have to be replaced soon. Should I split the money I’ve saved and buy a $6,000 car while paying off $6,000 of the student loan?

Phil Dear Phil, If I’m in your shoes, I want that student loan out of my life as quickly as possible. At the same time, I don’t want you living life without some money in the bank. If you’ve followed me for very long, you know I teach the Baby Steps when it comes to getting out of debt and saving money. Baby Step 1 is to save a beginner emergency fund of $1,000. Baby Step 2 is to pay off all debt, except for your home, using the debt snowball method. The third Baby Step is to build a fully funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. Yo u d o n’ t h a v e q u i t e e n o u g h o n h a n d f o r y o u r idea and to have something left over. I recommend paying off $11,000 of the school loan now and then finishing it up as you go. It won’t take much more time. Limp along in the beater for a little while longer and then, when you have no student loan debt, finish your emergency fund and start a car fund. I talk to a lot of people your age who still have student loan debt. But you have the opportunity to punch its lights out in a hurry. If you pour on the coals, you should be able to save money and get a better car in just a few months!

THE TEACHER WAS WRONG Dear Dave, My daughter is in her first year of college. Recently, her math instructor walked students through the process of getting a credit card and building credit. We’ve always followed your plan and taught her to do the same. When she asked the instructor if no credit score was as good as a high credit score, the instructor said no. He told the class the only way to buy a home without a high credit rating is by having a huge amount of assets or savings. I think I know your answer, but how do I explain this to an 18-year-old?

Allison Dear Allison, We l l , t h e f i r s t t h i n g y o u ex p l a i n i s t h a t c o l l e g e instructors — even tenured college professors — can be absolutely wrong sometimes. A few years ago my daughter took a personal finance class in college, and on the first day the instructor went on a rant saying Dave Ramsey is stupid. He didn’t know I was her dad, but she went through the entire class and never said a word. When she called home and asked what she should do, we told her to take the class and give him the answers he wants on the tests. We reminded her that she’s just taking a class, and that doesn’t mean she has to form her life opinions around what that guy thinks. Sit down with your daughter and gently explain in this instance her instructor doesn’t have a clue what he’s talking about. Explain to her you can get a home loan even if you have no credit score. People do it all the time. There are places like Churchill Mortgage that would be happy to give her an example of this process. It’s called manual underwriting. All you have to do is make a reasonable down payment, have two years at the same job, and provide two years of tax returns. Hope this helps, Allison!

HOW TO FIND

A CAREER PATH THAT FITS

By: Adrian Klaphaak

You have a career path that fits. Everyone does. A path that fits is the direction in your life and career that aligns your innate strengths, values, and purpose to create a positive difference in the world. You also have a unique way of living and being on your path that maximizes your potential and effectiveness. Being on your path isn't just about what you do but also how you do it. For most of you reading this article, the desire to find your path is obvious but the actual path isn't. And understandably so. The process of finding your true path is overwhelming. Here are a few steps to help guide your journey.

STEP 1:

EMBRACING THE PROCESS I know it's uncomfortable to not know what you want to do with your life - or what to do next. I've been there. Naturally, you want to have it all figured out as soon as possible. Everyone does. At the same time, looking for the fastest solution limits the necessary exploration of who you are and what you really want. Let the desire for a quick fix be there, just try not to engage it. If you need any further evidence that a quick fix isn't the answer, just look to the state of our planet and world economy that are currently suffering from the same desire for immediate results. How's that working out? Or maybe you are avoiding action until you know what you want to do. You tell yourself that you are waiting to find the right career because you don't want to make the wrong choice, but what have you really done to begin the process of finding it? This is another form of resisting to the process. If you can begin to accept that finding your path is a process, you open yourself to a deeper exploration, a more enjoyable journey, and a better possibility that your path will fit who you are.

Instead of following our inner guidance by listening to our heart, intuition, dreams, and passions, we make choices based on what we think we should do. We end up full of ideas and beliefs about the way things are that aren't even really our own; we get a map of how to live our own life based on how other people think life should be lived. How is someone else's map going to help you navigate to where you want to go? Before looking too much further, spend some time identifying the "shoulds" that are affecting how you move forward on your path. Write them out on a piece of paper. This simple practice will help you let go of some of the beliefs that are holding you back from getting in touch with your true self and innate wisdom. Joseph Campbell said it best, "We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us."

STEP 3:

DISCOVERING WHO YOU ARE Finding a path that fits you is driven by self-discovery. This is the core part of the process, the heart of the journey. Rather than looking for a career that sounds good and then attempting to compromise yourself to make it work, discover who you are and what you want and then find a career that is in alignment. Sustainable happiness and success are sure to follow. Look within. Get to know yourself. When you do, you will find that you have innate strengths that create value. You have core values and a unique purpose that create meaning. You have unrealized potential that can be used to lead, perform at your peak, and make a difference. The process of finding your path asks you to clearly identify

STEP 2:

LETTING GO OF WHAT YOU "SHOULD" BE DOING We all get bombarded with messages about what we should be doing from the culture that we live in. It's called conditioning and we need it in order to survive but too much of it limits our selfexpression and independent thought. I heard someone once call it getting "shoulded on." Sounds shitty to me.

30

DECEMBER 9, 2016

VOL. 21 ISSUE 1069

each of those parts of who you are.

GENERAL

WHAT ARE YOUR STRENGTHS? WHAT ARE YOUR VALUES? WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE? I believe that the answers to these questions illuminate our path. These aren't easy questions to answer but meditating on these questions will start to produce insights about who you are. If you want additional clarity, our coaching programs have specific exercises that will help you clearly discover your strengths, values, and purpose. The alignment of your strengths, values and purpose leads to your path.

STEP 4:

EXPLORING & LEARNING

The perfect career probably won't show up immediately but following the alignment of your strengths, values and purpose will ultimately guide you to your path. Using this internal compass as a guide, follow it in whichever direction it leads, and let your experiences be lessons that shape and refine the direction of your path. Joseph Campbell famously summarized this approach in his saying, "Follow your bliss." Years ago, after discovering my strengths, values, and purpose, my internal compass pointed me in the direction of helping people find their path. It was a clear message but it didn't come with instructions about what career to pursue or how to do it. I considered being a meditation teacher, therapist, counselor, teacher and a life coach. I researched the different professions, talked to professionals in each field, started attending meditation retreats, selfdevelopment workshops, and hired a life coach. All of those experiences shaped and refined the direction I explored until I found myself enrolled in a coaching certification program. My initial vision was to work with high school students but I discovered that most teens weren't quite ready for coaching. While initially disappointed, I accepted it, analyzed why it didn't work and refocused on an older population that turned out to be a better fit. I now typically work with people in their twenties and thirties that are unfulfilled in their current career and looking for a more meaningful career path that fits who they are. Reflecting on my path illustrates that the final career destination is not always apparent at the beginning of the journey. I found my path by acting in alignment with my strengths, values, and purpose, learning from my experiences, and letting my path be shaped by the information I received. I didn't find my path by waiting to figure it all out before I took the first step. I hope that this article leaves you with a better understanding of how to find a path that fits. If you are really serious about finding your path, I would love to coach you through the process. The steps that I outlined above are a broad overview of my "Career Path That Fits" coaching program. NEW

JERSEY native Anthony “AJ” Korski wanted to join the Navy after graduating from high school, but his plans were derailed by ACL surgery. Over the next few years, he mostly worked a number of retail jobs, often residing on a friend or family member’s sofa.

He interviewed for the program and was one of 14 people selected out of about 30 candidates. AJ moved in with a brother who lived nearby upon beginning the program in October 2014, and he simultaneously worked part time at a retail store to help support himself. The program taught him about the machining industry and gave him hands-on experience working with specific machinery and tools.

At 26, AJ broke his wrist hiking and was unable to perform his manufacturing job. Unemployed and staying on his brother’s couch, he moved back in with his parents.

As part of the program, staff from the New Jersey Community College Consortium helped AJ search for jobs. Employers also visited the school and conducted interviews for various positions, and students like AJ were given assistance with completing job applications.

During the time it took for his wrist to heal, AJ knew he needed a more stable career and began looking for better employment options. He discovered a free machinist training program at Middlesex Community College, which was funded by a U.S. Labor Department grant to the New Jersey Department of Labor. “When the training opportunity arose, I grabbed on to it,” he said. “I always wanted to be a metal fabricator, and I felt this was my chance to do that.” 38 DECEMBER 9, 2016

In December 2014, AJ completed the twomonth program, earning a certificate in precision measuring from the National Institute of Metalworking Skills. He moved in with a friend, sleeping on yet another couch. But only three weeks later, he landed a job as a mold maker at Lawrence Mold & Tool, headquartered in Lawrenceville, New Jersey – one of the employers that recruited students from the community college program. There he was given

on-the-job training, which also was made possible through the Labor Department’s grant. More than a year and a half later, AJ is still employed there, but his days of sleeping on couches are now over. He has his own apartment where he lives with his girlfriend of five years, and saved up enough money to fulfill his dream of buying a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Importantly, he says he is constantly learning more industry knowledge that will be instrumental to advancing his career. “I was driven to get the certificate and push myself into a better place in my life,” he said. “The machining program gave me a jump start into the field. Everything I learned helped me get my current job, and I use that same knowledge to excel in my position.” Joanna Hawkins is the deputy director of public affairs for the U.S. Department of Labor in Philadelphia.

If an employer calls when you have been drinking, simply say, “I would love to talk with you, but I need to call you back. Would it be convenient to call you tomorrow morning?” Usually they don’t mind you calling back. It would certainly be better than talking with someone when you sound drunk. Companies run like a bunny when they realize that someone is drunk in the middle of the day. That is definitely not a desirable trait in a candidate.

Any surprises along the way? The biggest surprise was when I stopped working for my dad and went out on my own. For the first time, I realized that being “Tommy’s daughter” gave me credibility. People trusted him, so they trusted me. But on my own, where people didn’t know me, I was nobody’s daughter. I saw the caution in people’s eyes, and it was shocking to me.

downright terrible. Most people simply “update” it keeping lengthy job descriptions from 20 years ago. No employer wants a 5 page resume. Angela Oakley, a HR Recruiter of professionals and managers says, “Today, two pages are the maximum. I won’t glance at anything longer than that and neither will other recruiters.” Many people dust off an old resume and do not put in the hours necessary to create an effective resume that advertises their accomplishments. You have only 15 -20 seconds to capture an employer’s interest when they look at your resume. It must be impressive or you’ll get passed by. Here are some key tips to improve your resume:

BE TARGETED Your resume must be targeted for the job you are applying for. Emphasize the skills to perform that specific job. If you choose to be broad and generic in your approach, you simply won’t get noticed. Sell your assets Focus on Results!!! Hiring Managers want to know all about your accomplishments. Resumes that get interviews clearly demonstrate this one important message:

overwhelming majority said the most important part of a resume is the Summary of Qualifications section. This is a high-impact section. Employers reported that this was one of the very first areas they read. And if the briefly stated summary demonstrates solid ability to fill the advertised job, it catches their attention and they slow down and give the applicant more careful consideration. Hiring managers also reported only about 5% of resumes sent out by those over 40 contain this key section. Think of it a highly influential summation of the specifics you bring to the job. This section usually consists of four to six sentences that present an overview of your experience, accomplishments, talents, work habits and skills.

AVOID….. No text boxes, no color ink, no designs or lines across or around the page and no tables. Most of employment software employers use cannot read these things leaving them as blank space. Employers HATE typos and spelling mistakes, so get a friend to help you proof your resume to put your best advertisement out there.
