COMMUTERS, REJOICE! HOUSTON — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is excited to announce the completion of the SH 99 Grand Parkway Segments F-1 and F-2. These segments span approximately 24 miles from US 290 to I-45 North, and include direct connectors from SH 99 eastbound to I-45 northbound, and from I-45 southbound to SH 99 westbound. Improvements to these important roadways are critical to the region’s continued mobility and economic vitality.

“We are pleased Zachry-Odebrecht Parkway Builders (ZOPB) has reached this critical milestone and delighted to be able to open this new portion of SH 99. The opening of Segments F-1 and F-2 sooner rather than later offers Texans an alternative route benefiting commuters and improving the economic mobility of goods and services through our region,” states Jeff Moseley, Texas Transportation Commission vice chairman. The SH 99 Grand Parkway has been in the planning stages since the early 1960s, and the delivery of these newest segments was made possible through coordinated working relationships with Harris and Montgomery counties. Construction on the project began in 2013 and is one of the largest design-build projects TxDOT has undertaken.

Beginning Monday, Feb. 8, 2016, drivers had access to this newly completed roadway connecting the rapidly developing areas of Cypress, Tomball and The Woodlands. TxDOT will be providing one week of toll-free use on Segments F-1 and F-2 prior to tolling beginning on Monday, Feb. 15, 2016. Thereafter, motorists can utilize a TxTAG or EZTAG to take advantage For more information, contact the TxDOT Houston District Public Information Office at (713) of a shorter commute. 802-5076.

Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY

Don’t Tithe With Credit Cards

Don’t Insure Cell Phones

Dear Dave,

Dear Dave,

What is your opinion of churches encouraging members to do e-giving with credit cards and debit cards?

I just bought a new smartphone, and the company I’m with offers insurance for the device. Do you think it would be wise or foolish to do this?

Melissa

Lisa Dear Melissa, I’m against debt, so I’m not particularly fond of churches asking people to use a debt vehicle to pay their tithes. I realize that few businesses and organizations distinguish between debit cards and credit cards when accepting p a y m e n t . H o w e v e r, t h i s p r a c t i c e bothers me a lot when it comes to churches. The Bible mentions debt several times in Scripture, and e v e r y t i m e i t d o e s , i t ’s a l w a y s i n a n e g a t i v e l i g h t . I t ’s n o t a s a l v a t i o n issue or anything like that, but the Bible basically says debt is a foolish thing. Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.

21 Issue 1026 24 Vol. February 12 - February 19, 2016

N o w, I t h i n k e - g i v i n g i n i t s e l f i s fine. But if I were the pastor or on the leadership board, and we had an e-giving process, I would strongly encourage people to use debit cards and not credit cards. T h e r e ’s n o t h i n g w r o n g w i t h a d r a f t or an ACH kind of thing. A lot of people do that and like the ability to give online.

Dear Lisa, The purpose of insurance is to transfer a risk that you can’t afford to take. When it comes to things like cars or houses, I absolutely recommend that people ha ve insurance. Most f olks couldn’t just write a check f or another car if the one the y drive were totaled. It’s the same with a house. If your home is destroyed, the insurance takes care of things instead of putting you in the position of having to pull tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars out of your own pocket for a new home—also something most people can’t do.

But I don’t want a giving situation to your church turn into debt to y o u . A n d i t d o e s j u s t t h a t w h e n i t ’s a credit card!

No, I don’t insure inexpensive things like smartphones. And if a smartphone is an expensive item to you, then you probably shouldn’t h a v e t h a t p h o n e . I m e a n , t h e r e ’s nothing wrong with having a cell phone if you can afford it. But if you tear up a phone or it breaks down and you can’t afford to replace it out of your own pocket, then you’ve got too much phone!

Projections of The Labor Force, 2014-24 Did you ever wonder how the workplace will change in 10 years? The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) not only provides current employment information, it also predicts and projects where growth will be and how the workforce will look within a ten year span. You can review their projections for the period of 2014 through 2024 at www.bls.gov/careeroutlook. The labor force is always changing because of population growth or decline and because of the aging of the workforce. During 1946 – 1964, the U.S. birthrate grew at such a phenomenal rate that we call this the “Baby Boom.” As this group has aged over the years, it has heavily influenced every aspect of our economy. Now it appears that it will once more be a huge influence as Baby Boomers stay in the workforce longer. In fact, workers between 75 and older will have the fastest growth in the workforce. BLS shows that the number of people between the ages of 55 and 75 (or older) who continue working will grow by about 7%. People are living longer, and they are still enjoying their work rather than retiring.

21 Issue 1026 44 Vol. February 12 - February 19, 2016

According to Pew Research, the next large population segment is the Millenials group. Millennials are those people who were between the ages of 19 to 35 in 2016, and there are nearly 75.3 million! That is more people than the Baby Boom by a small number, and the Gen X population (ages 36 to 51 in 2016) is projected to outnumber the Boomers by 2028. What do all of these numbers mean for you and your opportunities? It means that more people are staying in their jobs rather than retiring. It also means that young people are entering the job market, and the middle group is staying the same. In other words, there is little growth in the there are entry-level positions available for younger workers, and they can predict that they will probably work longer, too. More people are seeing their jobs as a way of continuing to be engaged and current through their work. The jobs of the future are here already, but what are they? WOMEN IN INDUSTRY CONFERENCE TO ADDRESS WORKFORCE SHORTAGE

GENERAL

The Community College Petrochemical Initiative (CCPI) encourages women across the Gulf Coast to explore employment options in the petrochemical industry at the Women in Industry conference Friday, Feb. 19. “The petrochemical industry needs to replace as much as 40 percent of their current employees over the next decade due to plant expansions and a retiring workforce,” said Linda Head, LSC associate vice chancellor, workforce education and corporate partnerships. “Attendees will hear from women already working in the industry about actual job experiences, how to best prepare for these careers, what training is required, and how to network with other women while on the job.” The conference will provide important information about petrochemical and industrial career fields and how capable, motivated women are finding success in a once male-dominated profession. The conference will also focus on helping women already employed in the industry to “take the next step” on the career ladder by attending to their technical credential and networking with other successful women, a valuable ally. During the “how to make it happen” session, women will learn about financial aid, child care, fast track certificate and degree programs, available at the area’s nine community colleges. Scheduled breaks during the day will provide opportunities for participants to meet with industry representatives from companies like ExxonMobil, Chevron Phillips, Convestro, Noltex, Jacobs, and others. The conference takes place at the Hotel Galvez in Galveston. Cost for the day-long event is $20 for students and $40 for professionals. Some scholarships are available. Click here to register and learn more about the Women in Industry conference. The CCPI is funded by a grant from ExxonMobil and consists of Alvin Community College, Brazosport College, College of the Mainland, Galveston College, Houston Community College, Lee College, Lone Star College, San Jacinto College and Wharton County Community College to recruit and help train the next generation of petrochemical and construction trades workers for the HoustonGalveston region. Known for its leadership, innovation and steadfast commitment to student success, Lone Star College provides high-quality academic transfer and workforce education/ career training programs to more than 83,000 credit students each semester, and a total enrollment of 95,000 students. LSC is training tomorrow’s workforce today and redefining the community college experience to promote student success and economic prosperity. Stephen C. How to Get Recruiters Attention on by Robin Ryan

What actually will improve your LinkedIn profile the most? Great question isn’t it? Working with Tom, a senior project manager the other day, he wanted to improve his profile and he didn’t know where to start. He was job hunting but no recruiters were calling so he knew he was doing something wrong. He had entered his job descriptions but as I reviewed his profile I saw several mistakes he had made that many others do too. Tom had missed several key aspects that you need to build into your profile to get recruiters and hiring managers to find you. Assuming you’ve gotten some connections and recommendations, here are my top strategies to make your LinkedIn profile standout.

There’s POWER in the Job Title

Think about the job title you are seeking before you write anything down under your name. It’s important to clarify what you are advertising for and trying to attract. Don’t just say Project Manager or VP and leave it at that. Be more specific and targeted towards the job you seek. Then sum up your professional identity in a short, powerful phrase. Change that VP to: VP Finance I eCommerce I Global Markets I Business Development

Engaging, Recent Photo

You must have a smiling picture on LinkedIn that looks friendly, engaging, approachable and yet still professional. No party pictures, nothing sexy. If you work in a suit daily, than that’s what your picture should be taken in. For most people, a more casual friendly shot works much better. Head shot only. Best picture to use is an angled shot look so you aren’t staring directly into the camera, your head is slightly turned and you seem to be happy, genuine and natural. You get the best color from pictures taken in natural light outdoors with a blank wall behind you. Skip the professional office picture –those are too stiff and artificial for LinkedIn.

Savvy Summary

Here’s where you must mix strong self-marketing to make yourself really standout, then add in the all-important key words of your job duties plus personalize what you have done. You can’t just list off what you specialize in or skip this section all together. You do need a great opening sentence that grabs attention. It’s best to highlight your top accomplishments here and add in some of your strengths too. Start with a powerful opening sentence to get the readers’ attention that reveals something important about yourself. For example, I’m the guy that most people think they are going to hate because I control all the money in the company but once they get to work with me I become everyone’s BFF. It’s also wise to discuss what you do well and the type of work you thrive on doing.

Be Approachable

Keep your LinkedIn profile conversational in tone and never turn it into a skeleton of a resume – or worse just a resume. That will never be effective to attract recruiters. Be sure to tell them how to reach you. There is a “contact info” section, most definitely add in your email and your cell phone number. My clients say no spammers ever contact them. Under the interest and personal sections, you can add information such as: open to new opportunities, contact me if you think something fits my skills at: list your email.

Actively Network

Use all these contacts you have to see who works where. Ask for introductions to have them pass your resume on when there’s a job you want or are applying for. If an internal employee sends on your resume in most cases someone will actually look at it as opposed to only the computer seeing it when you hit send. Join LinkedIn professional groups in your field and post questions regularly and join in on chats. Hiring managers can find you if you are more active. Lastly, look for people in companies you want to work for. Send them a request to connect if you have anyone who can introduce you – likely you do.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The mikeroweWORKS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes hard work, supports the skilled trades, and challenges the persistent belief that a four-year degree is automatically the best path to take. The Foundation awards scholarships to men and women who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for mastering a specific trade. Our focus is on supporting the specific skilled trades that help close the country’s skills gap and those that represent the significant bulk of our unfilled jobs. The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in scholarships to schools around the country, including Midwest Technical Institute, Tulsa Welding School, The Refrigeration School and Universal Technical Institute. One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”
