New Grads Beware:

Learning the Red Flags for Hiring Scams Leaving college or graduate school is a time of heightened hopes, often consumed by the daunting task of your first professional job search. In the chaos and upheaval of beginning this new chapter of your life, it may be easy to fall into one of the many traps laid for idealistic young professionals by scam artists. Whether they’re looking to steal your identity, harvest your personal information or extract free labor from you, those who propagate hiring scams are relying on your eagerness for employment and lack of experience to pull off their cons. Avoid falling into these traps by being aware of some basic red flags, from the beginning of your job search to the interview process. The job ad is filled with typos. Most legitimate companies have some quality assurance processes in place to check job postings before they go up. While some minor misspellings and grammatical errors may sneak in anyway, if a job posting looks like it was written by a child or a non-native English speaker, it’s probably best to pass it over. The advertised job is with a respected company, but the contact on the ad doesn’t have an email at that company’s domain. The job is supposedly with Microsoft, but the provided email address is micosoftHR@yahoo.com? It’s probably best to give that posting a pass. The job description is written in a sales-y tone. If you feel like something is being sold to you, it probably is. Words in all caps (e.g., “GREAT

OPPORTUNITY”) and gushing text about the outstanding features of the job that fails to provide any tangible information about the job itself are often red flags. Legitimate job postings do often describe perks, but they don’t tend to read like ad copy. And be on the look-out for the buzzword “multi-level marketing,” which translates directly into “pyramid scheme.”

in any links related to the company, that could be a further indication that not all is as it seems.

You are asked for money at any point in the application or interview process. If a prospective employer wants an application fee, an “investment” or payment for a credit report at any point in the application process, you are almost certainly facing a hiring scam. Legitimate companies will never ask job candidates for money. If you are asked to buy a starting kit for a sales job, you are probably dealing with a pyramid scheme.

You are asked to leverage your contact network. In the digital age, personal information is money, and many job scams are looking to harvest your friends’ data. If you are asked to provide contact information for friends or families or encouraged to sell products to your friends and family, it’s likely that you are being pulled into a job scam or pyramid scheme. And speaking of pyramid schemes...

You are initially quoted a very high salary, but later discover there’s a catch. A salary that seems much higher than you would expect is a red flag on its own, but if the quoted salary turns out to be based upon extremely high performance metrics, it’s unlikely that the salary is even possible to earn. The hiring organization’s website is sparse and Many job scams lure in candidates with exorbitant generic. If the company website seems hastily sounding salaries that end up being unreachable thrown together and lacks meaningful content--for best case scenarios, e.g. an employee could example, featuring only one or two pages with very theoretically make that money if he or she reached little text and only stock photos--that’s a red flag. unrealistic goals like a certain sales ceiling, but It’s an extra strike against the would-be employer if doing so would be an incredible feat. Many of these the company has no other Web presence, including jobs--especially commission-based door-to-door company reviews, mentions in the news and official sales jobs--can end up paying less than minimum social media pages. wage or even costing the employee money.

The interview is conducted in an empty, rented office. If you arrive at a job interview to find a temporary setup and relatively empty offices, it isn’t always a sure sign that the job is a scam, but it should be enough to raise a red flag. If a search engine query using the address of the interview does not result

The company is interviewing multiple people at once. A very few legitimate companies do conduct group interviews, so while a group interview isn’t a solid indication you’re being scammed, it should alert you to be on the lookout for other suspicious signs. Group interviews are common in job scams because it allows sham employers to roll as many marks through the system as possible. The job only consists of selling a single product. Another surefire sign of a pyramid scheme, a singleproduct business model should put you on your guard. Whether you’re asked to sell a specialized kitchenware product, herbal supplements or snake-oil-style cure-alls, don’t buy into the hype you’ll undoubtedly be inundated with about miracle products that sell themselves. The job hunt landscape may look like the Wild West from where you’re standing as a fresh graduate, but by practicing due diligence on any potential employer and staying alert to red flags, you can help protect yourself from predators in the employment marketplace. JobSparx is an excellent resource for legitimate jobs because we take the time to research any company that is advertising in our magazine for you, to be sure they are not hiring for scam positions.

Four Reasons Why You Need to Know Your Retirement Number By Chris Hogan IPeople love to throw around numbers when they talk about retirement. How many times have you heard that 52 percent of Americans have only $10,000 saved for retirement? Or that 33 percent of workers are putting off retirement until after age 65, and 10 percent don’t plan to retire at all? While those numbers give us a good idea of the scope of our nation’s retirement problem, they’re not going to help anyone actually change their retirement outlook. The only number that can accomplish that is your number — your own, personal retirement savings goal that will allow you to live out your dream retirement. There are a few reasons why I think that number is so important. First, to even begin calculating your retirement number, you have to decide what kind of life you want to live in retirement. Do you want to travel? Start a business? Help your grandkids with college? There’s no wrong answer, but you do need to think about how much money your dream retirement will take and then boil that down to a monthly income amount. Second, by having this discussion and agreeing on what your dream retirement looks like, you and your spouse now become a team. You’re working together, sacrificing together if necessary, so you can reach a goal both of you have decided is worth the effort. There’s nothing sadder than a couple who’s facing retirement with no money and no dream, simply because they never sat down to talk about their future! Third, by focusing on your retirement number, you stop thinking about retirement as an age. Retirement doesn’t begin at some magical age like 65 or 70. It begins when you have enough money to enjoy the life you’re dreaming about — whether that’s at age 50, 73 or 82. Fourth, your retirement number

DIANA Q: I am a veteran and want to move to Houston as soon as I retire. I went to high school there, and my wife and I still consider it home! I joined the Navy at 18 and have worked in procurement for almost 20 years. I was able to get my degree in business administration several years ago. I know that getting a great job may be difficult and wonder what job hunting advice you can give me. -San Diego, California Reader A: You are going to find Houston very different from the hometown that you left. I’m sure you have visited Houston in the intervening years and have seen the rapid growth that we have been experiencing. There are even more opportunities now than there were back in the day, and I would advise you to start looking before you retire. A good target for you would be companies that have government contracts. Your background in procurement should be a huge advantage for you with that type of business. There are numerous job fairs here in Houston that target vets and feature companies that are seeking your talents. You can see the career fair schedule on www.JobSparx.com. It may take you awhile to find the perfect job, but the key is searching effectively, sending targeted resumes, following

I have tried several fast food companies, and they say that they only have very late or very early shift opportunities. I’ve also tried hospitals and long-term care companies, but they don’t want someone who will be there only two months. My friend says that I shouldn’t tell them that I will be there such a short time, but I don’t want to lie. What should I do?

Q: Is it okay to wear nice black jeans to an interview? I have a dress, too, but I need a second interview outfit. I would wear heels and a nice blouse with the jeans. -Houston, Texas Reader A: Not okay. Find a pair of dress slacks or another dress. Jeans are not for interviews.

-Houston, Texas Reader A: It isn’t lying if you don’t tell them that you are looking for a stop gap job. It’s not good because the company will spend money training you and not get any return on that effort, but it’s not lying. It’s best if you apply only at companies that have high turnover rates so that they won’t invest so much in you. TRANSITIONING VETERAN

JOB FAIRS

Avoid Common Job-Hunting Mistakes Once separated from the military, transitioning veterans will be faced with new challenges entering the struggling civilian job market. Older veterans will be faced with age discrimination and budget cuts. Younger veterans will be faced with salaries not matching their experience and stiff competition. As a veteran though, you can better your odds finding employment opportunities by avoiding making these common job-hunting mistakes. Lets start with these four tips first.

Using one Method for Job-Hunting 1 – Thanks to technology today, job searching can be done in your own home, though other ways can be just as beneficial. Conducting your job search over the Internet will be the most efficient way to find employment opportunities. Never rely 100% on applying to positions online, since nothing is guaranteed you will hear back in a timely fashion as myself and other veterans have experienced with www.usajobs.gov. Instead, try using other tactics such as looking for employment opportunities in Newspaper and magazine ads, taking a trip to your local Department of Labor office and let’s not forget attending one of the many job fairs. After applying for a position, always be sure to follow up with a phone call to show your interest and inquire about the status of your application. Also think about the option to create a separate email account to receive job notices from veteran friendly job boards and websites. Having a separate email account will alleviate confusion with personal emails and also keep you up to date with current job openings.

Disregarding Social Media 2 – A 2010 article in Military Times Edge titled “The New Networking” by Adam Stone, shares tips for using social media in your job search. Social media is no longer just about staying connected with your military buddies, today it is used for networking, job searching and even by fortune 500 companies for recruiting. LinkedIn is the best in the business when it comes to networking with key personnel. Having a well written resume may be great, but simply that alone doesn’t guarantee your resume will be reviewed. Knowing someone in the right position could have a greater influence on whether or not you get called for an interview. Networking is so important today, simply by having a professional page on sites like LinkedIn can get you noticed and even a job.

Resume “Not up to speed” 3 – Sending out a resume with poor grammar, misspelled words, false information and once again “Military Jargon” won’t cut it. Having others look over your resume can

make a world of difference when applying for employment. Being honest on a resume will only help you when it comes to answering questions during an interview. When it comes to military jargon there is only one rule, “keep it off your resume”. Using websites such as www.Onet.com or www.MyNextMove.org for veterans will enable you to turn that military jargon into civilian words and skills. An employer will greatly appreciate being able to understand the experience you gained in uniform without having to translate language using the Dept. of Defense Dictionary of Military Terms.

The Chamber’s COMMUNITY JOB FAIR May 28, 2015 11 am - 3 pm PRESENTED BY

Lack of Knowledge About Your Civilian Career Field 4 – Knowing everything there is to know about your career field is a must. When it comes to finding out where the jobs are posted, the important people to connect with and being prepared for the interview. Some fields have specific websites or job boards for employment opportunities. For example, for someone in the education field here on long Island, you will know that olasjobs.org is one of the go to sites for open positions. However, you may not have known that not every school lists openings on this site. Though if you had taken networking seriously with key personnel in the field, you will have a better understanding of other resources such as the NY Times Newspaper, schools personal websites and education personnel should all be on your go to list when job-hunting. When it comes to interviews, knowing as much as you can about your field is a no-brainer. For example, one question you can usually expect on an interview is “what do you know about our company” or as a reader mentioned “What can you do for the company”? Be sure to find my articles in “Best for Vets” in the Military Times -Steve Transitioning Veteran.com is a free website created by me (Steve), after I experienced transitioning from military to the civilian world in 2003. It was created to help all military veterans and their families looking for simple information on benefits. It’s often difficult and time consuming to find the right information from various websites online concerning veteran’s benefits, so my goal was to create a centralized resource where it is readily available for the military community. Common information that veterans often need pertain to education, medical, and employment benefits. Transitioningveteran.com also contains information to help All Past, Present, and Future veterans and dependents.

3. Act professionally

You can have the best work ethic, the most amazing interview skills and the friendliest personality in the world, but it’s your resume that gets your foot in the door. Potential employers will view your resume before they meet you in person, and if they don’t like what they read, they’ll toss it in the trash. Small things such as bad grammar and poor spelling can be detrimental to your chances. If you have little experience, make the most of what you do have, such as voluntary work for charities, extra-curricular activities or participation in political campaigns.

You’re not in school any more. It’s time to embrace the “real world” -- the place your parents and grandparents have been telling you about for as long as you can remember! Employers want people who can act professionally in the workplace, and even if your job doesn’t require interaction with the public, you’ll be expected to have a polite, friendly and professional manner.

shine and show the employer what you’re really capable of. Use the interview to find out more about the company, ask questions at the end, be friendly and always smile. 5. Have confidence in yourself

Sure, it’s not just about believing in yourself, but if you have confidence it’ll make things a whole lot easier. If you’re being interviewed for the position of a receptionist and you tell the boss that you’ve never had any office experience, you don’t think you’d be good at answering the telephone and you’ll need a lot of computer training, you don’t stand much of a chance. A lack of self-confidence will worry the employer, so don’t mention your shortcomings and stick 4. Show interest during the interview to positive aspects of your job application. Be careful not to go too far the other way in Congratulations, you’ve managed to bag the confidence department, or you’ll end up an interview. You’ve still got a way to go, sounding arrogant and cocky! 2. Search for specific positions because if the interviewer doesn’t think you’re suitable, you’ll find yourself searching Rather than applying for every job within for other vacancies. The interview isn’t traveling distance of your home, choose an opportunity for you to look nervous those you consider most appropriate. This opposite the boss; it’s a chance for you to
