INTERVIEW WITH A NURSING INSTRUCTOR Interviewed by Sara Royster

WHAT DO YOU TEACH?

My specialty is obstetrics, the study of pregnancy and childbirth. I teach an obstetrical nursing course in a 4-year nursing program and supervise the students when they do clinical work in local hospitals. These students assist doctors and nurses with pregnant women who come in for appointments, women in labor, and newborns and parents after delivery. I work directly with the students and talk with hospital staff to get feedback on the students’ progress, which I incorporate into their grade for the course. I also teach a nursing leadership course, which discusses topics like conflict resolution, delegation, and teamwork.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR OTHER DUTIES?

Outside the classroom, I am constantly updating my knowledge about the subjects that I teach. I need to understand them before I can teach them to students. I also have to assess how my students are learning, so I spend time creating and grading exams, reading student papers, and evaluating student presentations. And, to keep up with the latest developments in nursing, I attend nursing conferences and read articles in professional journals, then use this

information to update my lecture and classroom materials. Instructors are also expected to be active in their nursing program, which in my case involves chairing or being a member of various committees and representing nursing on university-level committees.

DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW THIS WAS WHAT YOU WANTED TO DO?

I’ve known I wanted to be a nurse since I was a kid. My mother was a medical secretary, so I was already acquainted with healthcare work. When I was 8 years old, I was very ill in the hospital for 2 weeks. During that time, I became interested in the work of the nurses. They really took care of me, and I have never forgotten how they changed the whole experience for the better. That’s when I knew I wanted to be a nurse. My first job as a teenager was as a nursing assistant, and I was president of the Future Nurses Club at my high school.

I have three professional certifications, all related to obstetrics: Inpatient obstetrics, lactation management, and pregnancy loss. To become certified, I had to complete a certain number of clinical hours in each area and pass a national exam. Certification isn’t mandatory for teachers, but it’s often recommended. Having certification allowed me to design and teach a seminar to nurses and doctors to help them with families who have experienced a pregnancy loss.

Vol. 20 Issue 988 May 15 - May 22, 2015

after working with students doing clinical work at my hospital. I loved the experience of working with students, so I was immediately interested in the position. I went in for a series of interviews, one with the dean of the nursing program and another with my new potential colleagues. I was offered the job and accepted right away.

WHAT ABOUT NETWORKING?

Networking is very important in nursing for both students and teachers; it’s how a lot of us find our jobs. I network a lot at professional nursing conferences. WHAT’S YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR ASPIRING NURSES OR NURSING INSTRUCTORS?

If you’d like to teach nursing, get a doctoral degree. Most large universities with nursing programs expect their faculty to have one. Also, get some clinical experience before you teach. If you haven’t worked in a real-world clinical setting, employers may not see you as a desirable teaching candidate.

Lastly, you need to love teaching and interacting with students. You may know everything about your area of expertise, but students will dread coming to your class if you don’t love teaching it. How to be an Excellent Employee By M. A. Gallant

GENERAL

BEST JOBS AVAILABLE IN

NORTH HOUSTON!

All positions are long-term assignments with the possibility of perm placement.

Great work environment! If you think that you are a great employee, but can’t understand why you have been passed over for a promotion or raise, then you need to read this. Employers look for certain attributes in employees, and sometimes even the hardest working people don’t have the traits that businesses are looking for. The most important thing that you can do to gain favor with your boss is to care about the company. It is not enough to simply show up for work, go through the motions, and then head home at the end of the day. If you want to stand out from the other employees, then take a real interest in the company. If you truly care about the business, then your employer is more likely to choose you for a promotion.

Photo courtesy of iStock. Unfinished Business in theaters now.

Think about how your actions affect the company. Even the small things, like wasting office supplies, have an effect on the bottom line. Consider how you can save your company money. Every penny saved means more profit. High profits lead to a more successful company. Successful companies can afford to pay more and offer more benefits. Slow down! Many people think that the boss wants to see work being done as fast as humanly possible. There is truth to that belief; however, if you do your work too quickly, then you are bound to make small mistakes. This makes you look careless, not efficient. Take the time to do each task to the very best of your ability. Always double check your work before calling it done. Your additional effort will be noticed. Do not be a complainer. This is one of the things that employers dislike the most. The job is what it is. There is a reason that you are being asked to perform every duty. Your boss does not care that you do not like it. Complaining about

56

Vol. 20 Issue 988 May 15 - May 22, 2015

the fact that you are expected to do what you are being paid to do only makes you look immature and difficult. You will never move up in the ranks if you have a negative attitude. Be happy while you are at work. Don’t bring your personal problems to the office. Leave them at the door. Sometimes this can be hard, but your employer doesn’t need the added drama. If you are plagued with personal problems, your boss will feel that you can’t possibly handle more responsibility. Show them that you are in control of your life, even if it is chaos as soon as you step out the door. Don’t be content to simply do your job. When your work is finished, look for more to do. Ask if anyone else needs help. There is always something that needs to be done. You may be able to learn how to do someone else’s job. Cross training is something that any business will benefit from. The more you know, the more invaluable you are to the company. You never know when another employee will need to be out of the office. If you can step in pick up some of the neglected work, then your boss is sure to be happy. If you feel that you are not being rewarded for your hard work, then take an objective look at yourself. Chances are very good that the reason for your disappointment lies within you. There is always room for improvement. Put yourself in your boss’s position, and find ways that you can make yourself an even better employee. If you can’t come up with the answer on your own, then talk to your boss about it. If you really want to improve, they will be more than happy to tell you what your week points are. Don’t be afraid. Just by asking your supervisor what you can do better will show them that you care, and that is what they are looking for the most.

DIANA Q: I have been out of graduate school for three years and have been able to secure only four interviews out of the twenty plus job openings I have applied to. My degree is in social work, and I am licensed to practice, but I only have internship experience. I would like to work within a medical setting as a Renal Social Worker, but do not know how to get my foot in the door. I have applied online to several job openings in need of Renal Social Workers, but no opportunity has come my way. I really need some advice! Houston, Texas Reader A: It has to be frustrating to have the education and still not be able to land the job. Where did you do your internship? Was it in a renal practice? I’m pretty sure that you would have to have specific knowledge of the challenges associated with kidney failure, transplants, and renal insufficiency to get a position as a Renal Social Worker. It can be a very challenging field, and the patients (and their families) are looking for a lot of help with those challenges. I have had people tell me that they had to learn on the job, though. As our population ages, there will be more openings for this type of position, but I think that there is very little turnover in these jobs. I have

talked with a number of people who are in the field, and many of them were originally RN’s. I have also met a few who started in dialysis and changed to the social work side of the equation. One man told me that he had been a nurse practitioner. The professionals with whom I’ve talked have usually been with their companies for awhile – they haven’t done much job hopping.

people say that they can’t understand me. It really vexes me, and I’m not sure what to say. I need to get a job as soon as possible because I don’t want to live on government handouts. What should I do? -Houston, Texas Reader A: Welcome to Houston! It’s always harder to understand people on the phone than it is when you are face-to-face. Make sure that you apply for jobs that don’t require phone work. It might be best to respond to ads that tell you to email or apply in person. Once you have gotten a response, you can actually talk with the hiring manager or recruiter. Your biggest hurdle will be your lack of experience, but if you keep looking, you will find a job.

Probably the best way to find a position doing this work is to contact centers and hospitals rather than waiting until you see a job listing. Ask to speak with someone in that department, and just let them know that you are looking for a job and are not sure where to start. You may need to kiss a lot of frogs to find someone who can mentor you on your job search. I know this is going to be a challenge, but right now you are averaging fewer than 7 applications a year. That If you have any questions about interviewing, will have to more than double for you to actually hiring, or work, just email Ask Diana. I’d love to find something. hear from you. Dave BY DAVE RAMSEY

Church Pushback

Hopefully, you can explain to these folks the reason why you can’t contribute to additional things at the moment and they’ll understand. Dear Dave, If not, and it were me in your shoes, I think I’d My wife and I go to a small church where we tithe. have to find another church. The church is continually asking for contributions to other charities and causes, and we don’t have —Dave the money to give to them all while we’re sticking to our budget and getting out of debt. The worst part is that we get pretty aggressive pushback Stick with Mutual Funds when we say no. What can we do? Michael

Dear Michael,

Dear Dave, I’ve been following your plan, and I have my emergency fund in place and am investing in mutual funds. Recentl y, a financial planner recommended bonds to me. What is your opinion on this?

I don’t react well to that kind of pushback. I would probably be nice a couple of times, but after that Becky my response might sound something like, “Mind Dear Becky, your own business.” Seriously, I’d probably be a little gentler than that. But basically when it reaches that point, they’re saying, “I want your money.” And that’s really over the top. If it goes even further, and it becomes a question of you “digging deep” or not having enough faith, I might get un-gentle in a hurry.

I don’t recommend bonds at all right now. I’m not a fan of them, and I don’t own any. The bond market is almost as volatile as the stock market, and it doesn’t pay nearly as much on average. On top of all that, bond prices work at an inverse of interest rates. In other words, as interest rates rise, bond prices go down. Long-term interest rates are still really low. If you were to buy a bunch of bonds right now, and interest rates went up even one percent, you could lose a lot!

our first job is to provide for your family and take care of those kinds of responsibilities — which is a very scriptural stance. Once you’ve done that, then you’ll hopefully have the financial ability to move beyond tithes and into offerings, which are completely different concepts. Tithes are first fruits off the top, while offerings are from surplus I recommend mutual funds and good growth — meaning that you and your family are doing stock mutual funds. There are always some bonds mixed in with a growth and income well financially. fund, and I’m not opposed to that to some Another thing to consider is this: Does this church degree, but it’s not my favorite. So, if I were ever going to buy bonds — and I’m turn every impulse they have into pressure to not going to — it definitely wouldn’t be donate or buy something, because they didn’t right now. It doesn’t take much of a move plan for this kind of stuff in the church budget? in interest rates for bond prices to go down I’d start having a problem with the leadership if dramatically. this turned out to be the case, because it’s a sign they’re not planning and leading well. —Dave

(PAEDC) to provide custom training in welding to current employees. The training is made possible by Southeast Texas through a $75,000 Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) High Demand Job Training grant which will be leveraged with matching funds from the PAEDC and employer contributions. “Through these collaborations, TWC, our local boards and economic development partners leverage resources to equip Texas workers with high-demand skills while meeting the needs of employers,” said TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar. This capacity-building grant will be used to provide on-the-job training to approximately 24 trainees over a 12-month period to meet the demand for qualified welders at Team Fabricators. Upon completion of training, participants will be paid $14 to $20 an hour. “For several years now we’ve been faced with an ever growing shortage of skilled welders and fabricators,” said Team Fabricators Plant Manager David Cherry. “This initiative is the perfect vehicle to address that shortage.” Through this partnership, the group’s goal was to implement a strategic effort to bridge the gap between the employer community and job seekers and increase the skill sets needed for
