Most Effective Resumes

GENERAL

From USAJOBS.GOV

The most effective résumés when applying

for federal jobs are those that clearly articulate how an applicant’s skills and experiences align to the selection criteria defined by the job opportunity announcement (JOA). Applicants should always tailor their résumé to the job opportunity to which they are applying. Consider these additional tips in ensuring you’ve created and are using the most effective résumé. Pay Attention to Keywords Whether you’re writing your first résumé or updating an existing one, stop and think about which keywords you need to add based on the Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities required for the position. You could be the most qualified person for the position, but you could be lost in a sea of applicants without the right keywords. A Single Keyword Communicates Multiple Skills and Qualifications When a recruiter reads the keyword “analyst,” he or she might assume you have experience in collecting data, evaluating effectiveness, and researching and developing new processes. Just one keyword can have tremendous power and deliver a huge message. Study Job Opportunity Announcements (JOAs) This is the best way to determine important keywords. Review several JOAs, similar to your ideal position – even those in other geographic areas. You’re looking to find skills, experience, education and other credentials important in that occupation. Focus on the “requirements,” “skills” or “qualifications” sections of job ads, and look for “buzzwords” and desirable credentials for your ideal job.

your college days are far behind you, does it really matter that you pledged a fraternity or delivered pizza? The editing step will be difficult if you are holding on to your past for emotional reasons. Use Numbers to Highlight Your Accomplishments If you were a recruiter looking at a résumé, which of the following entries would impress you more? • Wrote news releases. • Wrote 25 news releases in a three-week period under daily deadlines. Clearly the second statement carries more weight, because it uses numbers to quantify the writer’s accomplishment. It provides context that helps the reader understand the degree of difficulty involved in the task. Numbers are powerful résumé tools that will help your accomplishments draw the attention they deserve from prospective employers. With just a little thought, you can find effective ways to quantify your successes on your résumé. Think Money All organizations are concerned about money. So think about and articulate ways you’ve saved money, earned money, or managed money in your internships, part-time jobs and extracurricular activities. A few possibilities may include:

•Identified, researched and recommended a new Internet Service Provider, cutting the company’s online costs by 15 percent. • Wrote prospect letter that has brought in more than $25,000 in donations to date. • Managed a student organization budget of Be Concise Recruiters often receive dozens or even more than $7,000. hundreds of applications for certain positions. DIANA Q: I was wrongfully terminated last September due to being assaulted by a co-worker months before. I was there for 10 months & had originally decided to resign due to finding another job. It didn’t work out, & I rescinded my resignation to stay at the original job. Two days later they terminated me. The reasons they terminated me were all lies. I filed unemployment & received it due to my previous employer not having any evidence as to why they fired me. Since last September I have not had a job in the healthcare field. I use my previous job on applications because I have a decent amount of experience there. I feel as if the previous job is saying bad things against me resulting in me not getting hired. Should I just stop putting them on applications and resumes altogether or put them and ask they not be contacted? I’m unsure if they are checking my references before they call me for an interview or not. Some companies do your background check before they hire you. Any suggestions? Dave BY DAVE RAMSEY

Don’t Give A Flighty Explanation

Big Debt On An Old Car Dear Dave,

Dear Dave,

My wife cosigned a loan on a 2007 car I’ve been in my current job for five years. for her sister. Now, it’s being repossessed, I’ve also had a second job for three of those and $23,000 is still owed on it at 20 percent. What can we do in this situation? years, but now I’d like to make a change. Do you have any advice on how to convince -Pablo a potential employer that I’m a good hire, even though I had a couple of jobs in Dear Pablo, the past that I quit after a month or two? Tell the bank or dealer where the car is, -Bill Dear Bill, Quitting a job after a month or so isn’t normally some kind of sin that automatically disqualifies you from being hired. It might be with some corporate goober who’s looking at things through some silly, one-size-fitsall hiring paradigm, but that alone wouldn’t be the kiss of death around my office. Now, would we look at something like that and want to know what happened and what your explanation was? Absolutely! But if it made sense, there wouldn’t be a problem. However, if it made you sound flighty or disgruntled with things in general, we’d probably pass. My guess is that the fields you’re interested in are like most — there’s a lot of importance put on who you know. And I don’t mean this in a negative way. Work and try to develop good relationships with people in your field and those associated with it. If that’s in place, they can honestly give out positive references. Knowing someone within the field or at the company, or being connected to someone with a positive reputation, can help you avoid the résumé slush pile. It can help cut through the mess and achieve clarity! —Dave

and tell them to come pick it up. There’s no way to get out of the rest, my friend. You and your wife are going to be liable for whatever the car doesn’t bring in afterward. Let’s say it sells for $4,000. That would be subtracted from what is owed, and it will still be up to you guys to pay the rest. You could always try to negotiate to settle it for pennies on the dollar. Based on what you’ve told me, that’s a best-case scenario.

The other thing I would do is demand a full audit on the account from day-one to present, because a 20 percent interest rate doesn’t explain why a car didn’t pay off – especially a $23,000 car. If this was a $5,000 car from a tote-the-note car lot, and they were ripping her off charging only interest – and that’s all anyone was paying, and she gave up and punted – that’s fine. You’re just looking for a little understanding of the situation. But $23,000 cars don’t generally have 20 percent interest. That’s a pretty freaky deal, and I’d want to know where the money went. From a bank’s perspective, I don’t see how anyone would think something like this would work out. The car was going down in value the entire time, so it just doesn’t make sense to me. Of course, if you have the cash lying around and it wouldn’t damage your finances, you could just take care of things and call it Stupid Tax. Cosigning on a loan, especially with family, is never a good idea. —Dave

Vol. 20 Issue 992 June 12 - June 19, 2015

Online platform to go live districtwide at all K-12 schools this fall Summer camp may be traditionally for students, but during the first two weeks of June, nearly 1,000 HISD elementary teachers and campus instructional technologists attended “HUB Camp” to receive training and learn more about the district’s online teaching and learning platform, known as the PowerUp:HUB, or “HUB” for short. During the 2015–2016 school year, the HUB will be transitioning from the pilot phase at 48 schools to full districtwide implementation at all 283 HISD schools. The implementation is part of the district’s larger efforts to digitally transform instruction and integrate technology into content development and classroom instructional practices. The four-day training and professional development session guided teachers through the online platform’s various features and gave participants hands-on experiences on how to use the HUB to collaborate with their peers, deliver instruction to students, and access educational information, resources, and tools. Teachers left having created several exemplar lessons that they could use in the fall with their students. “Reaction from teachers has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Elementary Curriculum Manager Donelle Williams. “They have seen firsthand how the HUB can help with integrating technology into their planning and classroom instruction as early as kindergarten.” Teachers like that the HUB creates a “one-stop shop” for digital resources, tools, and district curriculum that can all be accessed with the same login and password. The HUB also creates an online space where teachers can collaborate with colleagues from their own schools and from campuses across the district. “I have already set up a page for our fifth-grade team,” said Red Elementary teacher Lafoscia Maxie. “Next, I am going to set up a page for each of the grade-level teams at Red so teachers can collaborate and share.” Elementary teachers and instructional specialists who attended HUB Camp in June will receive additional training in July and will return to their schools in August as HUB Leads who will train, support, and guide their colleagues throughout the school year. Middle- and high-school teachers will undergo HUB training at one of five Secondary Transformational Institutes scheduled for late June and July. Secondary teachers who still need to sign up for the four-day training can get more information online.
