Career Opportunities Wide Open In Skilled Trades The most important decision that soonto-be high school graduates have to make is whether or not to attend college. Committing to a four-year baccalaureate program is also a commitment to the strong probability of student debts without the assurance of employment after graduation. Horror stories of college graduates who begin their adult lives six figures in the hole abound. There is considerable hope for any high school student for whom academia isn’t appealing. Job openings in skilled trades plumbing, carpentry, electrical work and HVAC - are wide open, and the demand for those services has not decreased during the past six years. The pay scale for tradespersons has also not gone down. In the Midwest, for example, the median income for a licensed master electrician is close to $55,000 per year; the median household income across the US is $50,000.
Even though the 2008 burst of the housing bubble disrupted the market for construction-related trades, that market quickly picked back up. More homeowners began putting their dollars into renovations and maintenance rather than into new construction. Not only has this trend continued, but a second wave of demand has risen as more REO properties are purchased. These homes often have sat empty and without maintenance for years, and many of them were purposely damaged by the previous owners in retaliation to the repossession. Cash buyers understand that all of the major systems will need some work, and the repairs often are well beyond the scope of the do-it-yourselfer. The skilled trades are also experiencing age-related attrition. These jobs can be physically taxing - plumbing, for example, demands the physical ability to squeeze into a tight, damp crawlspace in order to fix a broken pipe - so many tradespersons retire at age 62. Because high school educators actively promote the idea of a four-year degree and most high schools have dropped their “manual arts” classes, there have not been enough young people entering the trades to replace those retirees. There are many areas of the country that have too few plumbers and electricians to meet the area’s demands. As a result, prices for those services have gone sky-high and homeowners find it difficult to schedule work. Service companies in these places are actively recruiting new hires so they don’t have to turn away work. What does it take to enter one of these trades? The two primary requirements are excellent spatial perception and eye-hand coordination. All of the trades demand close attention to detail, the ability to accurately measure objects and spaces. Skilled tradespersons need to be able to think in three dimensions, read and understand blueprints and schematic drawings and have the ability to take the information from a drawing and apply it to the project at hand. The tradesperson needs to be comfortable with using tools and have the manual dexterity to operate hand and power tools safely. The trades also require excellent basic math skills that include coursework in

There is also a need for specialized training which is available either as a twoyear vocational or trade school program or through a union-sponsored apprenticeship. Finally, every state has its own licensing requirements and licensing examination. Unlicensed tradespersons can be hired to entry-level positions, but they must have their work supervised and inspected by a licensed tradesperson. Changes in technology and in building materials in general has diminished the gender gap in the skilled trades. Women are capable of installing and removing PVC pipe; the upper body strength and weight previously imposed by copper and iron pipe is no longer needed. Nail guns, power screwdrivers and other hand tools have equalized the field of carpentry. Electrical work may even favor females, as it often entails working with small objects and tiny tools in spaces that are too cramped to accommodate “man hands.” In short, both men and women who have the right attributes and are reluctant to spend time and money to acquire a college degree should seriously consider entering one of the skilled trades. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects growth in skilled trades jobs available to be between 19 and 25 percent over the next ten years. The demand and the pay scale for skilled tradespersons will stay high for a long time to come.

How Employees Handle Stress in the Workplace By: Jennifer Daugherty On those days that are extra stressful and/ or challenging, it can be difficult to maintain a healthy work/life balance. The questions below were meant to gain insight into how employees handle stress at work on a daily basis. The survey was posted on social media websites and the results were split 50/50 between men and women, see below.

DIANA
Q: I lost my job last week because of a huge, company-wide layoff. They laid off 20% nationwide and 80% of the Houston office. I’m trying to gear up for my job search and have already sent a number of resumes, but I haven’t talked with anyone yet. I loved that job and felt like I made a real impact, and I made more money there than I have ever made before. I would like to continue making a 6 figure base salary, but I don’t want to be eliminated because I made too much. I’ve noticed several companies that want you to complete an application before you talk with anyone. How should I handle questions about my salary goal? -Houston, Texas Reader A: You should be able to maintain your salary range if you’re careful about where you apply. When you are paid that much in a base salary, you will be expected to bring a lot of expertise and skills to the new job. Try to find a contingency search recruiter (headhunter.) You can do an online search of jobs within your industry, and you’ll find a few headhunters listed. It may require a lot of work for
you to find them. In addition, check out your last company’s competitors online. Chances are that they will have jobs similar to what you were doing before. If you still run into the “complete the online application and we’ll call you later” request, you can simply type in the form that you will discuss salary at an interview.
secrets from you. If she really is your BFF, sit down and talk with her away from the job. Tell her exactly how you feel, and ask her if you need to move to another company to grow. You both need to listen to each other. If you are planning to take your expertise to her competitor, you need to be prepared for her to be angry.
Q: I have been working at the same small company for more than 4 years, and I really need to find a new job. I love what I do, and I love the people there, but I will never be able to grow in the job. The problem is that my best friend is my boss, and I know it will cause problems between us if I go. I would rather keep on making less money and having fewer responsibilities than to hurt her feelings or make her unhappy. We live in a small town, and everyone here knows everyone else’s business, so don’t list my town.
Q: I am going to quit my job in 3 months after I have saved enough money to go to barber college. I heard that I might be promoted and transferred, and I don’t want to do that since I don’t plan to stay. What should I tell HR?
-No Name City, Oklahoma Reader A: I think you have been fooling your friend into believing that you are happy with things just the way they are. You wouldn’t like for her to keep
-Houston, Texas Reader A: Tell them that you really appreciate the confidence they are placing in you, but you have to decline. Give a truthful answer when asked “why,” but it doesn’t have to be the whole truth. How about, I would prefer not to be a manager? If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, just email Ask Diana. I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not every question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 days.

Dave BY DAVE RAMSEY
Thinks he’s a dreamer
Stand up to them
Dear Dave, We’re debt-free including our home. My husband is a man of faith, but a bit of a dreamer. He has written several inspirational books that haven’t sold, but he feels this and public speaking are his calling. He wants us to sell the house, and live on the proceeds for a year, while he pursues this dream. What do you think of the idea? -Christy Dear Christy, It sounds to me like your husband has a good heart, but I think it would be a huge mistake for you guys to sell your home when he hasn’t proven that he can sell anything he writes or says. I understand where his head is at right now. He wants to help people, and that’s a noble cause. But being a motivational writer and speaker can be an addictive thing. For some folks, signing books and being on stage are almost a high; they can make you feel alive. But the whole idea can draw you into the land of financial stupidity if you’re not careful.
Dear Dave, I have a debt with a collection agency and they have started calling my office. Last week, I made an agreement for monthly payments, along with an initial payment. All of a sudden, they were calling me again this morning at my office. Can I legally demand that they not call me at my place of employment? -Joelle Dear Joelle,
Ye s, y o u c a n . I ’ m g l a d y o u ’r e k e e p i n g in mind that you have a legal and moral obligation to pay your debts. But collectors have rules they must follow, also. They’re governed by law just like everyone else.
If they call you at work again, simply remind them of the terms of the payment agreement already in place and demand that they never call you at your office again. Also, send them a certified letter, return receipt My advice would be for him to keep his day job, and work his tail off nights and weekends requested, so that you’ll have proof you sent the letter and they received it.
