JOB FAIRSWORK FOR YOU HOW TO MAKE
By Diana Anderson
JOB FAIRS CAN BE INTIMIDATING IF YOU ARE GOING FOR THE FIRST TIME.
Sometimes a person can go to several job fairs and still not understand how to make them successful. I have recruited at more than a thousand job fairs, and here’s what I’ve learned:
Research
A few days before you go, look at the job fair website to see which companies will be attending. There is usually a list, and sometimes it will list the specific jobs for each company. When you see a company that interests you, research it and the jobs that are on their company website. Be thorough because you are going to use this research not only for your own information but also to impress the recruiters that you meet. Take notes. You will really stand out if you take this one step.
Have a Goal!
If you want to be successful, you have to know why you are attending. Plan your day by deciding in advance which companies you will approach. Be prepared to speak to other companies, too because some companies decide to attend at the last
minute and won’t be listed. Be sure that you know your goals before you even leave home.
Dress for an Interview
There are a number of ways for your appearance to stand out at a job fair, but only one of them is good. Say no to scuffed shoes, flip flops, suits that are too tight, tons of jewelry, T-shirts, and jeans. You are meeting decision makers for the first time, and they are seeing hundreds of people. Act professional and you will be seen as professional and worth their time. And don’t bring your mother, brother, sister or spouse. You will give the impression that you are not independent enough to work on your own. Don’t bring the kids. Maybe your mother, brother, sister or spouse could take care of them that day.
Smile
I see so many people standing around at job fairs with nervous, unhappy expressions. They walk up to the booth with a frown and never act happy to be there Recruiters are people, too, and we are attracted to enthusiastic, happy people. You may think that looking serious is professional, but it really isn’t. Keep smiling at other attendees and at company representatives. It will make you happier, too.
Be Prepared!
Take plenty of resumes. Some people have gotten good results by printing business cards with a mini-resume on them. Some companies will only accept resumes that are submitted online, but they are there to meet candidates anyway. This gives you a
50
Vol. 20 Issue 1004 September 4 - September 11, 2015
great opportunity to really talk with the recruiter instead of just referring to your resume.
Ask Good Questions
The absolute worst question that you can ask is: “What do y’all do?” You should have done your homework and know what we do. The second worst question is: “What are your benefits?” You questions should lead to an interview. Now is the time to ask anything you wondered about when you were online. You might want to ask how many positions they have open in your field. Ask what their hiring timeline is. Ask how long the recruiter has been with the company. Plan about ten questions, but you probably will have the opportunity to ask only one or two.
“yes!” We love questions, and we evaluate you based on those questions.
Listen
Listen to other candidates’ interactions while you are in line. You will learn more about the company, and you will also understand the type of questions being asked and the answers being given. It gives you a real advantage to know what the recruiter is asking and saying. If the person in front of you asks a question that you had planned to ask, change gears and ask something else. That’s why you prepared ten questions.
Follow Up
Be sure to collect business cards. You are going to need these and all of the company literature that you can find. Take notes on the brochures so that you’ll remember details about the person and the job. Put them in your bag and organize them as soon as you get home. Immediately email each person who talked with you to thank them for their time. Mention one specific comment to help their memory, and tell them how interested you are. Very few people take this step, and you will have a huge advantage. If they asked you to email a resume, email it and mention the person’s name who asked for it. Be persistent, but don’t be a pest. ™
Have Good Answers
When I ask you what type of job you are seeking, do NOT answer, “Anything. I’ll take anything.” That one answer makes you look desperate and unqualified. Answer clearly about what you can do for the company and why their company appeals to you. Use the information you learned on their website. If we ask if you have any questions, say Vol. 20 Issue 1004 September 4 - September 11, 2015

Question:
strangers.
“Hey Kevin, I listened to your recent call regarding using references, and I had a question. During my current period of unemployment, I had a 6 month contract position that went really well. I’ve tried to reach the two guys I worked for to see if they would be ok with me using them as professional references (I’ve left a couple of voicemails and emails for each). Considering that the interview I have coming up is for the same kind of work, having them as references would help. Do you think it would still be ok to list them as references even though I haven’t heard back from them?” – Tom
Frankly, I don’t know what would reflect worse – them not giving you a ringing endorsement or them not returning the call of the person checking your reference. It’s way too big a gamble to “hope” that “if” they call back they will say what you need them to say. As a Colonel of mine used to say, “Hope is not a method.” You’ve worked entirely too hard to get the interview to have someone else scuttle it for you. If you haven’t already done so, check out this blog of mine on managing references to help you close the deal. Best,
Tom, The only thing better than having the exact experience (and results to back it up) that a company is seeking is to have references that will validate that you are the real deal. That is why I would have to tell you “no” right now, given what you have described. It’s not safe to assume that just because you did good work that your references are going to reinforce Your Solution and the value you will bring as a new member of the team. Beyond that, if these guys aren’t calling or emailing you back, there is no reason to believe they will return calls as references from total

ASK DIANA Q: I’ve been approached by several companies lately and by recruiters in my field. The problem is that I don’t want to move again, and a couple of these jobs would require another move. My kids love the schools here and are doing very well. I travel a lot all over the US, and we have close friends here who can be reached if my wife needs anything while I am away. Is there a nice way of telling the companies that I would consider their job if I could work from home?
love sales and want to continue working as long as I possibly can. The problem is that the work I’m doing now makes it hard to pay the mortgage. I need to find a good sales job that lets me keep on working, but it’s really, really hard to convince anyone that they should hire a 65-year-old. Do you think I have a case for discrimination? Do you think it’s possible that I can find a job?
is to sell yourself because any company would be lucky to get you.
- Houston, Texas Reader
-Clear Lake, Texas Reader
A: I do think it’s possible. You have been a very successful salesman for many years. Your best bet would be to stay in your field, but I know that may be hard to do. You know all the wine buyers in Houston, and that’s a real asset to any distributor. If you start over in another industry, there will be a huge learning curve, and it may take awhile to be earning as much as you were before. While companies are not supposed to discriminate on the basis of age, it’s true that there can be subtle remarks and practices that make it harder. It’s very hard to prove that you’ve been the victim of discrimination and can take a long time to settle, but in the meantime, you still have to pay the mortgage. It’s possible that you might be able work as a consultant and earn more than you currently are, but remember that you will have to pay your own taxes. Your job now
A: Why do you think you are “being honest” when you drop it on the interviewer that you’re not really interested in doing a good job but you want them to spend $3000 a year to provide you insurance? You are sabotaging your interviews, and I think you should consider if it’s deliberate. If you like the job and think you can do it, accept it. You can pay for your own insurance with the money you make.
Q: I have been a stay-at-home mom, but I need to get a job to have insurance and other benefits. I have been going to interviews, and I have been totally upfront with everyone that I need insurance. I keep getting reject letters and wonder if I should be less honest.
-Houston, Texas Reader
A: First tell them how flattered you are that they’ve called you, and then tell them that your children really like their schools, and you have to consider that when you think about another job. Since you are currently traveling all over the US, you could simply work from home and travel for them. If they say, “no,” you haven’t lost anything, but you may have made some good contacts.
Q: I am 65-years-old, but people tell me I look like I’m 50. I’m in great health and want to keep on working. I have been in the wine business for many years, and I am currently working part-time for a wine distribution company and a few days a week as a Sous Chef. I

Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY
No Need for Professionals
Going to Extremes is Unhealthy
Dear Dave,
Dear Dave,
My wife and I moved to Washington, D.C., about a year ago, and we’d like to put our old place in North Carolina that we’ve been renting on the market. We’ll be asking around $140,000 for it, so do you think we should consider professionally staging the home?
I’ve heard you talk about extreme spenders and extreme savers. Exactly what do these terms mean?
Ben
Dear Marianne,
Dear Ben, It would make a lot of sense if you were talking about a million-dollar house, but with a less expensive home like that I’d just make sure it’s really clean and neat and nice — especially the front area with the sidewalk and bushes. We’re talking curb appeal here. Make sure the front door, trim and porch area are all cleaned or painted, too. All this is like a first impression on a job interview.

There shouldn’t be any bad smells in the house, and everything inside should be crisp and clean as well. You can stage it yourself with a few pieces of nice furniture and such, if you have it available. And try this old realtor’s trick to make things a bit more homey: Put few drops of vanilla extract on an eye of the stove while it’s heated. It will make the whole house smell like you’ve been baking cookies.
Marianne
Some people have a tendency to live in the moment, while others think more about the future. Financially speaking, those who live in the moment tend to be spenders, while the other type tends to be savers. When you take these kinds of behaviors to unhealthy extents, you have extreme spenders or extreme savers. Either one can be an unhealthy thing. Extreme spenders may need to slow down, grow up and learn the value of money by living on a budget, setting savings goals and working to meet these goals. Extreme savers often operate out of fear and uncertainty. In some cases, they may have an even worse spirit in their lives — greed. They have to learn that it’s okay to have a little fun spending and to give generously. When it comes down to it, there are only three uses for money: spending, saving and giving. You have to do some of all three in order to have a truly happy and healthy life!
But no, I wouldn’t pay to stage a —Dave $140,000 house. —Dave
METRO Board Recognizes Bus Operator for House Fire Rescue and Others for Workplace Lifesaving Actions
METRO Board Chairman Gilbert Garcia presents bus operator Paul Nelson with Certificate of Recognition. Jay Evans with the Houston Fire Department also saluted Nelson for his actions.
Thursday, August 27, 2015 The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County(METRO) Board members today recognized the heroic actions of bus operator Paul Nelson who raced towards a burning home and rescued an injured man. METRO Board members honored Nelson with a Certificate of Recognition proclaiming Nelson “a true METRO hero.” On July 31, 2015, Nelson was driving his route in the Heights area when he noticed smoke pouring from a home and a woman screaming for help. Nelson parked his bus, asked passengers if he could help and then jumped into action, carrying a seriously injured man from the home to safety. Nelson then ran back
to the home to see if anyone else needed assistance. It was at this point Nelson suffered burns to his hand and neck and had to be doused with water by a bystander.
METRO bus operators honored for saving the life of a coworker. (from left to right) Darrell Willis, Christopher White, Harriet Orville and Danita Jarver
Nelson has said he does not consider himself a hero. But to Nelson’s wife, his METRO family and the community as a whole, he is a living example of heroism and selflessness.
METRO Board members also recognized several employees whose lifesaving actions saved a coworker. On Aug. 10, 2015 a Hiram Clark bus operator
walked into the Hiram Clark facility, went into distress and collapsed. Harriet Orville was the first person to see the emergency and notified others. Orville and Danita Jarver, Kevin Wyatt and Darrell Willis began CPR. James Jordan called 911, while Christopher White effectively operated the automated external defibrillator until EMS arrived.
“This is wonderful, because you could only have imagined what would have happened had he not been quick to respond, quick to action and brave,” said METRO Chairman Gilbert Garcia. “The METRO Board extends our heartfelt thanks for his courage and representing the best in METRO employees.”

The mikeroweWORKS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes hard work, supports the skilled trades, and challenges the persistent belief that a four-year degree is automatically the best path to take. The Foundation awards scholarships to men and women who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for mastering a specific trade. Our focus is on supporting the specific skilled trades that help close the country’s skills gap and those that represent the significant bulk of our unfilled jobs. The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in scholarships to schools around the country, including Midwest Technical Institute, Tulsa Welding School, The Refrigeration School and Universal Technical Institute. One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”
T
oday’s job market requires a highly effective resume to capture the employer’s attention. Based on the survey I conducted of 1000 hiring managers and HR directors, here are 21 ways to help you improve your electronic resume. 1. DEMONSTRATE RESULTS Employers like proof that you can do the job. Note the action performed and conclude with the achieved result, noting how your employer benefited. Use numbers and percentages to quantify your accomplishments. Show how you made money or saved it. Add in productivity increases you made and new things you created or developed. 2. USE KEYWORDS! Most employers sort resumes electronically using keywords to find the applicants they want to consider. Include all notable work tasks and job skills that are necessary and preferred to perform your job and incorporate those words and phrases into your resume. 3. BE TARGETED Generic and vague resumes do not get noticed. Mention your specific skills and abilities needed to perform the job title being applied for. It’s much more effective to create a different resume for each job title (i.e., one resume just for Trainer, another for Program Director) and incorporate only the information pertinent to doing that specific job. 4. ADD SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS The summary of qualifications section encapsulates your most marketable skills, strengths and experience into 4 - 6 sentences. 5. BE BRIEF AND CONCISE One or two pages; short and to the point works best. Be a skill-
ful editor, deleting the portions which are not relevant or least helpful to your securing a particular position. Emphasize your most recent experience, the last 7-10 years. Cover in detail the major job duties performed in your current or last job. 6. NO GRAPHICS, LINES OR DESIGNS The formatting of a resume must be kept readable. Electronic software misreads or deletes text boxes, design lines, graphics, photos and fancy fonts. Use bullets or italicizing to emphasize important points. 7. DON’T JUST LIST JOB DESCRIPTIONS Long and vague, these job descriptions lack any accomplishments and so they must only be noted with the result your actions achieved. 8. BE ACCURATE List job titles, employers and the dates of employment. State your skills, qualifications, and experience as positively as possible without exaggerating or misstating the truth. If your job responsibilities are not adequately described by your job title, indicate your abilities with appropriate terms (i.e. Project Manager instead of Technical Specialist). 9. USE ACTION VERBS Start each sentence with a descriptive action verb - such as established, managed, produced, organized. They add power to your sentences. And, never use “I” in the resume, that is implied when you begin with a strong verb. 10. BE COMPLETE Spell out names of schools,
cities, abbreviations, and titles completely, since employers may not recognize abbreviations or acronyms. 11. MAKE POINTS QUICKLY Complete sentences are not necessary in resume writing; it is better to use simple descriptive statements to make a point. Be sure any technical terms are understandable to non-technical people.
considered professional or wise to include information about marital status, gender, height, weight, health, or to insert a picture on your resume. 18. NO SMALL FONT SIZE Use a size 12 font. Arial or Helvetica are the best fonts to use.
12. WRITE IN PAST TENSE In all your sentences, use past tense words since they imply that you “have done it” before. This reassures employers you can do it for them.
19. DON’T ADVERTISE NEGATIVE INFORMATION The resume is the wrong place to advertise that you were laid off, fired, or had an extended illness. Never state why you left a position; simply list the dates of employment. Don’t mention what salary you want to receive.
13. BE PERFECT The resume you send out must be flawless. No mistakes typos or misspellings. This is HR managers’ chief complaint and they insist they won’t hire offenders.
20. BE CURRENT Update information annually. Waiting until you may need the resume allows you to forget important contributions and details.
14. PROOFREAD CAREFULLY Don’t trust computer spell checkers. Read every word out loud to be sure it is correct.
21. FINAL TEST Does your resume get results? Does your resume clearly and quickly communicate to employers that you can do the job? Do your strengths come across? Does everything support the job you are targeting? Should anything be removed? Are employers calling? If not, rework, get professional help or check out resume books such as Winning Resumes (Wiley, 2nd Edition) with samples to help you improve yours.
15. MAKE IT READABLE A crammed, cramped resume often goes unread so layout the resume carefully. Make deletions wherever necessary to achieve a readable product and eliminate redundancies. 16. NOTE HONORS AND AWARDS Only list items that are work related and matter to the jobs you are applying for. Do include all community or association leadership positions held but not just organizations you have memberships. 17. DON’T INCLUDE PERSONAL STATISTICS It is no longer
