Over

40?

YOUR VOLUNTEER SKILLS MIGHT LAUNCH YOUR NEXT CAREER By Robin Ryan, Bestselling Author of Over 40 & You’re Hired “We value many kinds of experience, and we appreciate a person who has shown initiative through volunteer activities to obtain it.”

When I met Janet, a mother of three teenagers in her late forties, her very first question was “Do you think anyone would hire me? I’ve haven’t worked a day in nearly fifteen years.” Janet had never been paid a salary, but she was quite accomplished. Janet had organized major fundraisers, special events and large three-day conferences. She had recruited helpers, secured corporate sponsorships, planned agendas and coordinated catering for hundreds, all through her volunteer work. Until our career counseling session, Janet didn’t feel that her skills would have value to a potential employer because she had not been paid for her work. That was far from true. When she sent out her new resume outlining all the event planning she had done, employers started to call. Janet got several interviews, and within a few weeks began a great job with an impressive salary. I did advise her to take a crash course to build her computer skills, and she later told me that she’d never have kept the job if she hadn’t taken that extra step to begin mastering MS Office and database management. Volunteerism might just help launch your next career. Many people over age forty want to do something different. If that describes you stop to consider the volunteer work you have done or might want to take on in the future. The US government reports that 25% of Americans volunteer in the US, amounting to about 63 million people. Gaining marketable skills – paid or unpaid – is essential. Cynthia dreamed of being a writer. She started out writing on newsletters for her service club. She wrote free write-ups for her town’s weekly paper and even started her own blog. Eventually she mailed out samples and got a few paid assignments that lead to her being a writer for national magazines, including numerous Brides’ magazines.

People unhappy in their fields often choose to volunteer in completely different areas. As a result, they often pick up some new skills and the chance to explore an interest while learning something new and stimulating. Jim had a 20-year marketing career but he’d spent much of his free time working on environmental causes. He lobbied legislators, worked on writing position papers and made dozens of contacts and told me he thrived on advocacy work. At 48, he made the decision to head off to law school and today works as a successful lobbyist. Darren was a military firefighter who volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. He gained some valuable management experience working on several building projects. He showed exceptional talent in coordinating manpower and materials. Upon leaving the military, he put that leadership expertise to use landing a great job as project manager for a major developer. Mary had been an accountant but said she was felt burned out doing taxes. She wanted something new. We meet for some career counseling and I uncovered she had spent nearly ten years being heavily involved doing a lot of nonprofit volunteer management work for a local arts organization. That led to her new career in nonprofit administration doing something she cared about and using skills she’d given away before. “We value many kinds of experience,” Maria, an HR manager, says. “And we appreciate a person who has shown initiative through volunteer activities to obtain it.” Donna, a Senior Vice President, said, “Women tend to disregard life skills -- scheduling, budgeting, organizing events and charity work. Planning a fundraiser and having 200 people turn out is a significant achievement. It demonstrates management leadership that’s definitely needed in today’s workplace.”

move up in the company? Do you want to develop new skills? Do you want to network with worthy people? These are all questions that you should be able to answer. Remember that a career is not just about you helping the company but knowing how the company can help you. 12. YOU HAVE NO LONG-TERM COMMITMENT. The price of turnover is very high and many employers cannot stomach the costs of constantly replacing employees. They want someone who is in it for the long run and plans on staying with the company for a long time. They do not want someone who will just get up and walk out of the job when the first opportunity arises. Prove that you are willing to stick with the company for some time and they will respond accordingly. 13. YOU CANNOT TAKE CRITICISM. Nobody is perfect. Everybody has room for improvement and if you do not think that you cannot be improved, then you never will improve. Do not take criticism too personally. Instead, see all criticism as a new learning opportunity and find out what you can do better. Improve in those areas to make yourself stronger and more adept. 14. YOU TAKE TOO MUCH TIME TRYING TO BAD MOUTH PAST EMPLOYERS. When asked why you left your past jobs, it may be tempted to just blame everything else on how bad the past company was. You could go on and on about how your manager was terrible, how the environment was toxic, how the company was never making any money, and how they never took the time to appreciate your work. While some of this, if not all of it, may be true, it could easily come across as gossip. Furthermore, your interviewer might just see it as you blaming everything on them and taking no responsibility for yourself. 15. YOU TALK OVER THE INTERVIEWER. The interviewer most certainly wants to hear your voice, but that does not give you permission to interrupt them or talk over them. Remember that this is a conversation, not a dialogue. Try to avoid being too aggressive or rude to them because that will be a major turn off. Be polite and wait your turn. Be enthusiastic, but do not speak out of place because that will interrupt the natural flow of conversation. These are just a few things that you should remember when conducting your next interview. Remember that each employer is different and that this is by no means a comprehensive of all-inclusive list of behaviors to avoid. Everything is about making a good impression and letting the employer know why you are the best person for the job. Be well prepared and give it your all. Even if you never get the job, know that there are always more opportunities waiting for you.

Job Interview? HOW TO DRESS FOR THE BEST

First Impression A first impression happens in just seconds. Nobody wants to be judged by the way they appear to people, especially a hopeful employee. Unfortunately it happens, and you need to be able to work this first impression to your advantage when interviewing for a job.

Looking your best for an interview doesn’t need to cost a fortune. Oftentimes, men and women have clothing in their closets already that will fit the bill for an interview. Your closet is the first place to go. If you need to, mend any tears, hems or replace buttons. Shine your shoes, and try everything on to make sure it fits correctly, and doesn’t bunch, cinch or gap in all the wrong places. You are already nervous about your interview, no need to make things worse by being uncomfortable in your clothes. There are many options for proper interview attire, and much of it depends on the company you will be interviewing with. Are they a corporate company, such as a financial institution, or are they a manufacturing company with onsite interviews? Are you interviewing for a creative position or the service industry? One sure way to be dressed correctly for your upcoming interview is to research the company you are hoping to join. Look online for company handbooks with guidelines for dress, and pore through social media for photos taken inside the office or at company events. You can also contact the Human Resources Department at any company to simply ask what would be appropriate. Whatever you find, dress one level up from that for your meeting. If you wear a jacket or blazer, it can easily be removed if you find the atmosphere is more casual than you expected. You can never go wrong with a simple suit in a conservative color such as black, gray or navy. Make sure it is simple. You can add

personality and color in your accessories. A plain suit will last for many years, and hardly changes with the whims of fashion. Women should be careful to not wear anything cut too low, or to have skirts too short. Real life is never like what is shown on television, and many of the work outfits you see portrayed during your favorite office drama are not appropriate for the workplace. Make sure your skirt is not too tight, and that it comes at least to the knee when you are standing. A good test is to sit in front of a mirror. What you see in the mirror is what your interviewer will see when you are in front of them. You want them to focus on you and what you will bring to the company, not what you are wearing (or exposing). Also steer clear of sheer fabrics. It is always a good idea to err on the side of caution when picking out your wardrobe, and make sure that all tattoos, straps and other distractions are covered. Men should check their shoes to be sure they are clean and shined. No sneakers or open toed shoes should be worn for an interview, for both men and women. Grooming is also important. A clean shave or fresh trim for men with facial hair is something that will be noticed right away.

are wearing, or what you smell like. Your interviewer will interpret how serious you are about working for their company by how you present yourself for your first interview. Be sure to put your best foot forward, and let them know you will be a good fit for their business. Being dressed professionally will not only add to your cache as a potential employee, but add to your confidence as you make that great first impression. Consider purchasing more than one outfit for interviews, so you will be prepared for any follow-up meetings you will have with your prospective employer. This will also give you a good base for your work wardrobe, and you can build upon these basics as you work your way up the ladder to success!

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The mikeroweWORKS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes hard work, supports the skilled trades, and challenges the persistent belief that a four-year degree is automatically the best path to take. The Foundation awards scholarships to men and women who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for mastering a specific trade. Our focus is on supporting the specific skilled trades that help close the country’s skills gap and those that represent the significant bulk of our unfilled jobs. The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in scholarships to schools around the country, including Midwest Technical Institute, Tulsa Welding School, The Refrigeration School and Universal Technical Institute. One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”

ASK DIANA Are payday loans ever a good idea? Do you think tha t such places as payday loans and car title loans can lend me $15K if I ha ve 15 credit cards? I assume that they will also take into consideration that I ha ve been working a t the same place f or ten years and of those ten years, half or close to half of the time, I ha ve been making $50k and have been paying off my $100K mortgage. I had a personal bankruptcy about 10 years ago, but I have reesta blished good credit. Do you think tha t I would ha ve a t least an 80% chance of getting tha t loan or not? I’m not sure if I can get a loan from a bank. Wha t do you think?

perf ormance. Now the burden is on you to not mention an ything a b o u t i t d u r i n g t h e i n t e r v i e w. There really is never going to be a reason that anyone at work should know about your challenge, If, after you are hired, you choose to share this inf orma tion, you need to realize tha t it could impact your career. Even though most people would not be judgmental, there might be some who would. Seriousl y, there are always some people who are judgmental, and you don’t want to give them anything t o j u d g e ! ! Yo u s h o u l d b e v e r y proud of the progress that you’ve made because we all know tha t it isn’t easy.

I need new clothes… I really don’t have any clothes that I think are good f or inter view. I know I need to get something, but money is really tight right now because my husband lost his job. I ha ve not had to work since my daughter was born 6 years ago. Do you have any sug gestions?

A: I think you should go to a credit union or bank. I have never heard of a payday loan as high as $15K, but I suppose anything is possible. I would steer clear of any lender that imposes unreasonably high interest rates, shortterm debt repayment, and single balloon payments. There are many web-sites that can explain the problems with this kind of lending, but the one that I think is the easiest to u n d e r s t a n d i s f r o m t h e Te x a s Fair Lending Alliance: http:// www.texasfairlending.org/ resources/faqs/. Even though i t i s a b o u t Te x a s , i t e x a c t l y describes this type of lending. Yo u n e v e r w a n t t o g e t i n t o t h e n e v e r- e n d i n g d e b t s p i r a l t h a t is the result of a payday loan. If you pledge your car title on a loan, they can repossess y o u r c a r. H o w w i l l y o u g e t t o work if you don’t have a car? Does the bus line run to your destination?

-Sugar Land, Texas Reader A : Buy one suit and two blouses. If you have jewelr y that matches, you will be able to coordinate two inter view outfits. If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, just email Ask Diana. I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not ever y question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 day s. Have a question for Diana? I am recovering. I am an alcoholic, but I have not had a drink in 3 years. I want to change jobs, but I’m afraid that other companies might not be as generous about hiring an alcoholic. How should I handle this during an interview? - H o u s t o n , Te x a s R e a d e r A : You are in luck!! There is no way that any questions about alcoholism will be included in your inter view.
