If you are entering the job market for the first time, you already know that the technical skills you possess are vital to your success. Whether you are seeking employment as a scientist or a computer programmer, potential employers will want to be sure you have the training and education needed to get the job done with a minimum of additional training. What many job seekers do not realize is that so-called soft skills can be just as vital to success. The ability to work effectively with all kinds of people and interface with different departments is an essential part of any job. A research scientist will need to call upon her soft skills when making a presentation to the marketing department, whereas a computer programmer will need plenty of people skills when interviewing end users and working with the department managers who are testing his code. While the ability to get along with other people and see things from their perspective are two of the most important soft skills for job seekers, they are not the only attributes employers look for. There are a number of other soft skills workers need to master to get the jobs they want and succeed once they are hired. Some of the most important soft skills for modern job seekers include:

LOYALTY - loyal employees are the key to success for businesses, and they need to know the people they hire will put the needs of the firm first. A company is only as good as its workers, and smart managers know that - and reward their most loyal employees. You do not have to be a yes-man or yeswoman to get a promotion, but understanding the longterm goals of the company and working toward them is one of the best ways to move up the corporate ladder. PERSEVERANCE -- successful people never give up; they are able to stick to the project even when the going gets tough. It is easy to get discouraged, but learning to work through difficulties is a critical part of success. quick word if I may, in defense of hospitality, customer service, and hope for the species.
after that we were demolishing a delicious meal at the bar. Then, the owner showed up.
Last night, after a four-hour drive from Quitaque to Abilene, the crew and I were equal parts ravenous and exhausted. By the time we checked in to another Holiday Inn, the only place in town still open was The Taylor County Taphouse. According to Yelp, they serve dinner till midnight all week long. In reality, The Taylor County Taphouse closes at 10pm on Tuesdays, which made our arrival at approximately 10:15 completely useless and utterly heartbreaking.
I meet a lot of people in my line of work, and most of them have a story worth telling. Josh Robinson has several. He grew up on a local farm and spent the first part of his life working for his Dad, bringing in the four hundred acres of wheat and praying for rain, just as his folks have been doing since 1941. Then he went off to Texas Tech to study biochemistry.
The remaining staff was very polite, but told us the kitchen was completely shut down, and gestured to the many chairs behind them, all of which were upside down on the table tops. After confirming zero dining alternatives in the immediate vicinity, they offered to serve us some beer, which was very kind, but I told them our last meal was ten hours and three hundred miles ago, and that I was in fear of my life, as the crew was staring at me in a way that conjured up thoughts of The Donner Party. So a server named Keith asked us to wait a moment, and found the manager – a guy named Tim – who glanced at my emaciated team and called the owner at home – a guy named Josh – who apparently took pity. Tim reopened the kitchen, and invited us to take a seat at the bar. I went back in the kitchen to express my gratitude, and met the rest of the staff, who had been seconds away from going home after a long shift of their own. Instead, they put their aprons back on, and got busy making our dinner. Two minutes later we were enjoying the aforementioned barley and hops, and twenty minutes
Naturally, a career in medicine led to a career in music, which led to owning and operating a recording studio in Dallas. That got put on hold though when the economy crapped the bed, and left the family farm in a serious bind. So Josh hit the reset button one more time, pulled up stakes, and returned to Abilene three years ago. His first year back, there was no rain. They lost the entire crop. Second year, same thing, thanks to a major freeze. Then his Dad, Leland, broke his hip and things got very dicey. Josh worked round the clock, and happily, the weather finally cooperated. This years crop made it to harvest, but it was a near thing. Josh needed a way to add a little stability to the family business, so he built The Taphouse from the ground up. Why not, right? He mastered Autocad and designed the whole thing himself. He built out the interior with reclaimed wood from surrounding barns, and hired a few dozen people to see if a nonchain restaurant could find a toehold just off the highway. Oh – and just to keep things interesting, he had a baby girl a few months ago.
HOSPITALITY
I’ve always believed that farmers have the hardest job on the planet. With the possible exception of running a restaurant. Josh does both, and a good deal more as well. As I listened to his story, it occurred to me that the most interesting people never seem to know what they’ll do next. All they really know, is how to work, how to lead, how to laugh, and how to keep the lights on. And the successful ones know something else – they understand that to run a business, you’re always open – no matter what the sign says. Which is a long way of saying, next time you’re in Abilene, check out The Taylor County Taphouse, and give my regards to the gang. (Preferably before 10.) Mike

CON’T FROM P. 42 failures before hitting it big. DEDICATION - dedication to the success of the project, and the company, is an essential skill for both job seekers and employees. You can bet your boss is watching the team and silently assessing which workers are truly dedicated to success and which ones are content to coast through each project. POSITIVE ATTITUDE - no one like dealing with negativity all the time; an employee who brings a positive attitude to the workplace is an asset to any company. A negative attitude will get you nowhere a can-do attitude can take you to the top. GOOD TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS -- there are only a limited number of hours in the day, and the most successful employees know how to make the most of every minute. Keeping a calendar, setting reminders and breaking complex tasks down into simpler components are all valuable time management skills all workers should learn. STRONG COMMUNICATION ABILITIES - employers need people who can communicate effectively with coworkers, customers and colleagues; that includes both written and verbal communication. Good communicators know how to talk to colleagues, managers and subordinates. They know how to get their point across clearly and concisely, and they know when to follow up. TEAMWORK - the ability to work as part of a team is an essential skill in the modern workplace; employees need workers who can get along with their fellow team members and work toward a shared goal. No company can succeed

JOB FAIR without the dedication of all its workers, and that is where teamwork comes into play. Just as baseball team cannot win without great pitching and great hitting, no company can succeed without the combined talents of the entire workforce. PROBLEM SOLVING employers need people who can think on their feet and solve problems on their own. Successful employees learn to look at complex problems from all sides to make solving them easier. They also learn to break down complex projects into simpler components. SELF-CONFIDENCE - a selfconfident attitude is an essential skill for job seekers; strong self-confidence helps job seekers project the right attitude to get the job and make the most of every opportunity once they have the position. Self-confidence does not mean arrogance - it means believing in yourself and trusting in your abilities. FLEXIBILITY - the business world is always changing, and employees need to change with it; businesses are looking for workers who can readily adapt to change as it happens. Nothing is permanent in the world of business, but the best leaders know that every new challenge is really an opportunity in disguise. The ability to do your job and do it well is an essential part of career success, but soft skills can be just as critical. Understanding why these skills are so important and how to improve them is one of the best ways to improve your standing at the office.

ASK DIANA Q: I was just reading your column in the Magazine of Houston. This is way interesting. I have a couple of questions: I was born here in the USA, but my parents are from Venezuela. When I was 9 years old, we went back to Venezuela, & I lived there until recently. I graduated from University in Venezuela with a Milling Engineer degree in 2013. I now live in Houston & am trying to find a job. I’ve been applying over & over, but I don’t receive any response. As you can see by my resume, I worked for many years in Venezuela, but I haven’t worked in the US, and I need something soon. I graduated 2 years ago & the jobs I’ve seen require years of experience. I really don’t know which engineering position is the right one for me to apply. I’m bilingual Spanish-English. I would appreciate any tips & hope you can guide me in this. I’ve attached my resume, & if you can make any suggestions, it would be great.
document. In addition, you do not give your tenure at each company or how long you were in each position. There are many grammatical mistakes, and it lacks clarity. This is the kind of resume that gets deleted. If you are relying on it to open doors, you need to revamp it. Your email to me was in all caps. If you send that to a hiring manager, you will be ignored because typing in all caps is considered rude and is perceived as yelling or screaming. I have worked with many engineers over the years, and I have to confess that I’ve never heard of an engineering degree in milling. Maybe the equivalent would be Mechanical Engineer. I have made some changes to your resume so that you can add some dates & make other changes. Be sure to indicate that you are an American citizen & legally able to work in the US. I hope this will help you get some interviews & wish you all the luck in the world.

Why Job Hunters FAIL and what you should do about it Art Designed by Freepik.com
by Robin Ryan, 60 Seconds & You’re Hired
Employers are extraordinarily picky about whom they offer a job to. A poorly crafted resume, or goof at the interview, and you’re dead in the water. Many common mistakes can be avoided. I divide my time between talking to hiring executives, HR folks and working with job search clients. This gives me a very broad view of what people do that works, and what trips them up – often without realizing it. Here the top reasons job hunters fail and my tips for your success. 1. Failure to advertise your key accomplishments. Employers hire people who get results. Generic job descriptions and vague, unfocused resumes don’t work. Employers complain that most applicants simply don’t have the skills to DO the job. The Internet’s ease of use and the job hunter’s ‘click and send’ mentality has added to this problem-increasing by the thousands the number of resumes received. This has made it very hard to get noticed. ROBIN’S SUCCESS TIP: Make your resume stand out. Your resume needs to note your actions and the results that were achieved. Be specific. Show where you saved money, made money, saved time or increased productivity. Use action verbs like streamlined, created, implemented
-- to show you’re a take-charge, getthe-job-done kind of person. Limit your resume no more than 2 pages. 2. Not writing a cover letter. Human resources directors state that most individuals no longer send a cover letter especially when they apply electronically. The few that do send in a generic one that rarely addresses the employers’ needs. ROBIN’S SUCCESS TIP: A well-written cover letter has great power with employers and should always precede any resume sent. Simply make one document including both cover letter and resume when you apply online. Begin your letter with a powerful first paragraph that sums up your experience, key strengths, skills and accomplishments you have to offer. Hiring managers reveal that your cover letter demonstrates your communication skills and a well written one can capture the interview. 3. Not mastering how to control the interview. Dressing inappropriately, wasting time on lengthy discussions of your life story, lacking confidence, not being well-informed about the company, and nervousness -- these get you off to a bad start you may never recover from. Employers often make snap decisions and many confess that they often mentally

Do you have any advice? life is not smart, regardless of being between jobs or not. Ouch, what a mess! You didn’t Mitch tell me what you guys make, but I can tell you Dear Mitch, a few things. Number one, you’re probably going to have to get your income up. You may have to take on a couple of part-time jobs or work some overtime. My grandmother used to say, “There’s a great place to go when you’re broke — to work!” If you only have $200 a month to put toward your debt, you’ve got to create some margin, and that may be on the income side of things.

You guys obviously have loving hearts & are doing great financially. But let’s take a look at few important factors in a decision like this. If you’re thinking about actually taking him in under your roof, you need to remember that your first responsibility is to your family. You have to make sure they’re safe, and that would include finding out everything there is to know about this guy. Talk to his past teachers, coaches or even family members if you can find them. Spend some time just talking to him, too, & find out more about his background, attitude, habits & goals. Then, if you still feel led to open your home to him, make sure everyone involved signs an agreement with really clear rules & guidelines about what is expected, what will not be tolerated and the rewards & consequences of each.
The other thing I’ve found is this: Most people seem to be able to magically find money when they feel it’s a life or death situation. “Magically” means that you do a budget. You make a written game plan where every dollar has a name before the month begins. When you write down every dollar, & you & your husband sit down & agree on where every dollar is going to go, you’re going to have an ah-ha moment that feels like you got a raise. If you’re normal, you waste a bunch of money Helping him with food & clothing alone would because you don’t budget & have a written be a generous act, but what you’re considering is absolutely amazing. The mikeroweWORKS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes hard work, supports the skilled trades, and challenges the persistent belief that a four-year degree is automatically the best path to take. The Foundation awards scholarships to men and women who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for mastering a specific trade. Our focus is on supporting the specific skilled trades that help close the country’s skills gap and those that represent the significant bulk of our unfilled jobs. The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in scholarships to schools around the country, including Midwest Technical Institute, Tulsa Welding School, The Refrigeration School and Universal Technical Institute. One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”
Jessica Tidwell:
WELDER HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING AS A TIG WELDER? I’ve been here about two months. Thanks to the growing need for welders and a great welding coordinator at my school, I actually had three good job offers before I could even finish school.
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB LOOK LIKE ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS? I work for a custom metal fabrication shop, mostly working with stainless steel and occasionally aluminum, so I actually get to do a little bit of everything. Instead of just welding, I’m usually on a project from start to finish. That means I get to make the individual parts, tack and weld everything together, sand, clean, polish, and so on. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB? The variety. That’s part of why I wanted to work for this shop. I didn’t want to do the same exact thing, day in and day out. Here, we’re always making interesting new things, and each project has new challenges that I have to figure out.
Photos courtesy of Jessica Tidwell
TELL US YOUR STORY OF HOW YOU CAME TO BE IN THIS POSITION. I actually didn’t really have any experience with welding before college. But the growing demand, the pay, and the huge variety of jobs to choose from captured my attention. By working hard, coming in early, staying late for extra practice, and just spending as much time as I could getting hands-on experience, I ended up graduating at the
top of my class and going into a pretty challenging field. I’ll admit that it was still a bit of a struggle, being a woman. There were companies that would tell me flat out not to bother coming in for an interview and a weld test because I would be wasting my time. But every company that I did test with came back with a job offer for me. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING INTO YOUR CAREER FIELD? Don’t cheat yourself. Use every opportunity to gain as much knowledge and experience as you can. Make yourself an invaluable employee. WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT OUTSIDE OF WORK? I do a lot of volunteer work, training and handling working dogs for scent detection. I also instruct at national seminars, teaching teams from all over the country and helping them to better serve their community. This has allowed me to really make a difference in people’s lives, and I just don’t think there’s a greater achievement than that. ™
