No More Guilt Trips!
Finding The Right Motivation
Dear Dave,
Dear Dave
My parents left their six-figure jobs to enter the ministry when I was in high school. That was 10 years ago, and my mom still regularly asks me to share my money with them. I don’t mind helping out once in a while, but this has been going on for a long time and I’ve started feeling bitterness about the requests and their bad financial decisions. My mom also tries to make me feel bad sometimes if I can’t afford to give them as much as they want. She constantly references their calling, and that I should want
My husband and I make $180,000 a year combined, and we have a net worth of about $1.6 million. We’ve been blessed financially, and lots of times motivated by a survival point of view, but what do you do when you’re not motivated by that kind of thing anymore? How do you find and live out God’s purpose for your life?
to help with that. How can I stop this pattern? Renee Dear Renee, This is not a healthy situation for anyone involved. By consistently giving or loaning your parents money, you’ve lost respect for them in the process. The relationship has become strained, and that’s a tough thing for anyone to deal with — especially in a parent-child situation. On top of all that, your mom sounds like a travel agent for guilt trips. It seems like she’s working you over while implying it’s all really for God. That’s toxic. Going into the ministry is an admirable thing. However, I remember a guy in the Bible named Paul who made tents while he conducted his ministry. I’m paraphrasing, of course, but his line was something like, “If you don’t work, you don’t eat.” He had a job, remember? So, suggesting that someone work outside the ministry while trying to do God’s work isn’t mean or unfair. No one should do this to their child, and it’s going to be hard to unravel it all and turn it into a respectable situation. I hope everyone will consider sitting down with a mature third party, and developing a situation where you’re no longer giving or lending them money. In the meantime, read a book called Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud. After that and some objective intervention, I think this situation will become a lot healthier for everyone.
6 JULY 1, 2016 — Dave
Lisa Dear Lisa, Congratulations on your success! You guys really have been blessed, and it sounds like you’ve worked hard for your wealth. If you’ve ever studied psychology a little bit, you may remember Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Basically, once you get physiological and safety needs met, you feel a need to find other things to motivate you. It sounds like you’re a performance-oriented person. So am I. People like us get our relaxation and even fulfillment away from work in different ways than most people. My suggestion would be to start thinking about ways you can serve and help other people or causes you care about. This could even mean becoming a stay-at-home mom for a while and really pouring into your kids, if you have them. If it’s something else, that’s okay too. How about this? You’ve obviously been thinking about this stuff for a while. Take a day all to yourself, away from everything and everybody, and bring along nothing but some food and drink, a bunch of notepads and pencils, and a Bible. Open up your mind and your heart to the things you care about and all the possibilities. You have to have a goal that is worthy in your mind, and you don’t have that right now. I can’t tell you what your calling is, Lisa, but I can say this. There’s tons of joy and fulfillment to be found when you’re working in a way to serve the people and things that matter most in your life! —Dave VOL. 21 ISSUE 1046

SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC INSTALLER As long as there’s sunshine, Rebekah Hren expects to have an outlet for her work. Rebekah, a solar photovoltaic (PV) installer, puts solar panels on roofs and in other sunny places to turn the sun’s power into electricity. She enjoys promoting renewable energy, in part because it’s an emerging field. “It’s a fun industry to be in right now,” says Rebekah. “It’s kind of like the Wild West.” In solar PV systems, solar cells— devices that convert sunlight into electricity—are joined to create different types of solar modules, which are usually further connected. Solar electric systems can be installed on the ground, on poles, or on the roofs or sides of buildings. The most common type of solar modules is the 3- by 5-foot flat, framed solar panel that is mounted on top of a roof. But solar cells are also manufactured as flexible panels, roof tiles, and shingles. Other cells may be integrated with building materials, such as siding or windows. Most of Rebekah’s installations are on the roofs of houses. Atop a roof, her first order of business is to make sure that there is enough room for the panels and that the roof can hold the weight of the system. If the roof meets both criteria, Rebekah bolts structural framing, or racking, to the roof. Next, she attaches the panels and connects them with wires. The wires are then brought down to a basement, garage, or outside box to be hooked up to an inverter, which turns the direct current (DC) generated by the solar cells into an alternating current (AC) that can be used to power homes and businesses. Some systems include battery backup to store electricity for later use. The wiring of the inverter to the utility box and main electrical grid must be done by a licensed electrician. In fact, some municipalities require that solar PV installers have an electrician’s license. Rebekah has a license, so she does the wiring on her installations. Each installation is unique, especially in residential work. That one-of-akind feel
to every job keeps it interesting, Rebekah says: “Installation never goes flawlessly, so there’s always something new or different to consider.” For example, installers might need to reinforce a roof that isn’t strong enough to hold the panels. Or they might alter their design to work around a chimney. Before finishing, installers activate the system, check that it’s working correctly, and help with site cleanup. Lead installers or those who have an electrician’s license might be responsible for arranging work permits and inspections, or they may work with utility companies to connect the system to the main electrical grid. Some installers also repair solar electric systems that are already hooked up. For Rebekah, a typical residential installation takes about 3 days, and she spends half of that time placing the modules. Large, commercial installations may take several months. As a result, work schedules of solar PV installers can be similar to those of construction workers, with long hours on some days followed by periods of no employment. Also like construction workers, an installer’s days often start early to beat the worst of the heat. And their work depends on the sun in more ways than one. “If it’s raining, a lot of times I can’t work,” says Rebekah. That’s because wet weather can make installation dangerous. Working up high requires taking special precautions, such as wearing a harness, but safety equipment is often no match for hazardous outdoor conditions. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish employment data on solar photovoltaic installers. But industry sources suggest that there are about 7,000 solar photovoltaic installers—who may also be known as solar photovoltaic technicians or solar installer roofers— in the United States. About half of all solar PV installers work in California, a State that provides many incentives for solar electric power. Because solar power requires a large upfront investment, tax credits and other government incentives help make it a more affordable option for individuals and businesses. Given the trend in favorable government incentives, analysts expect that the solar-power industry will continue to grow rapidly. As the use of solar power expands, the job tasks of solar PV installers are

evolving. Some workers concentrate primarily on installing the panels. Others, especially those at small companies, do everything from sales to planning to wiring. Experienced installers in any size company may advance to lead installer, system designer, sales representative, or other positions. Solar PV installers need mechanical skills and must be able to work with the power tools and hand tools used to construct and fasten equipment. Electrical knowledge and an understanding of basic math are helpful, as are good problem-solving abilities. Attention to detail is important, because completing an installation often requires following diagrams and instructions. Heavy lifting is also required at times: Solar panels typically weigh between 30 and 40 pounds; batteries can weigh double that— or more.

And workers can’t be afraid of heights. Although most commercial installations take place on flat roofs, many residential installations take place on pitched roofs— often with a steep slope—and on loose or fragile materials, such as cedar shake and clay shingles. “The scariest part of the work is being up on the roof,” says Rebekah. “You have to be a certain type of person to climb up on roofs and do high-voltage electrical wiring.” Most solar photovoltaic installers have a high school diploma and mechanical, electrical, or related experience. People with construction backgrounds are often well suited for the work; roofing experience is particularly valuable. Some employers prefer to hire applicants who have an associate degree in an electrical or related field.

Rebekah says that solar panel installation also attracts career changers from a variety of fields. New workers frequently learn on the job, although specific training in solar installation or solar power is helpful. Voluntary certification is also available and is sometimes required.
If you share our passion for customer service & hospitality, then this is the place for you!
Industry analysts estimate that wages for entry-level solar PV installers are about $12 to $15 an hour and vary by location, with crew leaders making between $20 and $25 an hour. Workers with an electrician license or other qualifications typically earn more.
Villa de Matel
But for Rebekah and other solar PV installers, their work isn’t just about earning a paycheck. “What I really love is installing a system and knowing that it will be creating clean energy for 25 years,” says Rebekah. “It’s exciting to be making a difference.”

Part of an internship’s value comes from the opportunity for experiential learning. Whether students have some, little, or no idea about the kind of work that they want to do, they can get firsthand knowledge about a particular type of work or work

helping them to focus their career goals. Not surprisingly, most students choose an internship that is related to their major or to their career objectives. But many students aren’t sure what they want to major in, let alone what they want to do for a career. And the differences between one internship and another can be hard to discern, particularly for students who are new to the working world. Making several important decisions can help students choose the best internship for them. Perhaps most important, and most difficult, for some
Job fairs can also be a source of information about internship opportunities, as can the Internet. For example, the U.S. Government has a list of available internships online at www. studentjobs.gov/d_Internship.asp. In addition, colleges and universities usually maintain local listings of employers who hire interns. Career counselors and academic advisors may be aware of possibilities, and professors may know what types of internships students in a particular field of study have had in the past. Programs that offer academic credit typically have an internship coordinator who oversees placement and monitors interns’ progress.
students is to decide which fields or occupations they are interested in. Career counselors, academic advisors, and vocational guidance publications, including the Occupational Outlook Handbook (available online at www.bls.gov/oco), can aid in the process. Browse the Quarterly’s online index, www. bls.gov/opub/ooq/ ooqindex.htm, for other topics of interest. A related decision that students must make is which industry to work in. Occupations, and their related internships, differ from one industry to the next: An internship for a would-be management analyst would be much different in a bank, for example, than in a nonprofit organization.

UPTOWN HOUSTON “Uptown Houston is a reflection of what is best in the city. The improvements currently underway will secure its pre-eminence as the standard bearer for world-class urban districts for years to come.” – Uptown-Houston.com

A REFLECTION OF WHAT IS BEST
In 1948 what is now Uptown was actually 3 miles outside Houston’s city limits. The roads were described as “lonely, unlit, pockmarked booby traps for nocturnal animals and boozed up motorists.” That reporter wouldn’t recognize it now! The Galleria is one of the top destinations in Houston and receives more than 24 million visitors VOL.annually. 21 ISSUE 1046

E
veryone who lives in the sprawling Houston metro knows that the Galleria area is the place to go for entertainment, great food, shopping, and concerts. The Galleria Mall is the largest mall in Texas and is the 4th largest mall in the US. Employment in Uptown Houston is constantly growing and will for the foreseeable future. Uptown Houston is unusual in many ways: It is the largest business center in the nation that is not part of a traditional downtown, and even though it is not a conventional downtown, it is a leading economic driver for the City of Houston. More than 66,000 people live in the Galleria area and there are nearly 35,000 homes. There are some occupations that are more common in Uptown than in the rest of Houston such as the legal field, engineering, IT, entertainment, science, food service, sales and related disciplines. So if you live in Uptown, you and your neighbors are probably in some of these lines of work. As a business address, Uptown Houston is considered the best in the city! Uptown encompasses approximately 1,010 acres and is the size of downtown Denver or Pittsburgh! A building boom in Uptown is changing the landscape daily, and it is currently home to more than 2,000 employers and more than80,000 employees.

IMPROVEMENTS FOR THE FUTURE If you’ve ever driven on Post Oak or anywhere else in Uptown/Galleria, you will have seen the stainless steel arches and street sign circles hanging above the major intersections. Even the traffic lights are beautifully designed by industrial designer Henry Beer, and he is hard at work designing more stainless steel structures to tie in the Post Oak Boulevard renovations. In an interview on Houston Matters, the Houston centered radio program on KUHF, Mr. Beer said that industrial design defines a city’s brand. We know that is true because his innovative design is recognized by everyone.

Another famous Uptown landmark is the Gerald D. Hines Waterwall, designed by Philip Johnson, winner of the Pritzker Prize for Architecture. It was originally privately owned, but now the Waterwall and park belong to the City ofHouston.
COME VISIT UPTOWN - HOTELS
In February 2017, Houston will host Super Bowl LI. While the entire Houston area is looking forward to this event, Uptown is proactively building more hotels to accommodate the influx of NFL fans, and to support tourist and business travel for many years to come.
NEW HOTELS MEAN NEW JOBS!
There are construction jobs as they go up, and staff positions once they are fully operating. If you have been in the Galleria Area lately, you have seen Tilman Fertitta’s 36 floor hotel, The Post Oak, going up. It is billed as a mixed-use tower because there

will be shops, offices, restaurants and 250 luxury hotel rooms. You can even land a helicopter on that 36th floor. It actually occupies 10 acres. In addition, Macy’s closed one of their two Galleria stores in 2014, and Simon Property Group Inc, who owns the Galleria, is going to open a 25 to 30 story luxury hotel and condo tower in that location. Construction has already started on renovating Post Oak Boulevard with new drainage and other improvements. The next phase of the project will be the Uptown Dedicated Bus Lanes Project, which will make life easier and less stressful for employees getting to and from work. This building boom has been especially good for construction companies. When everything is completed, Post Oak Boulevard will be a beautiful Boulevard with a landscaped environment for pedestrians as well as transit service. Of course, it will still have car and truck lanes, too.
