HOW TO GET NOTICED IN THE WORKPLACE

By: Jo Runner

Do you have the nagging feeling that you’re being overlooked at work? You know you’re talented and have ideas that can improve the department, yet no one pays attention to you. It is always easy to get noticed for things you don’t need recognized, such as the trip and fall incident at the water cooler last week. The real question is “How can I be noticed in the workplace for the good things?” Here is the answer to that question with 6 easy to follow tips.

Be On Time

As the old saying goes, “If you’re not early, you’re late”. Get to the building early enough that you can be at your desk and working on time. In administrative positions, people spend up to 20 minutes each day with a prepping routine. Meaning, they boot up their computer, go to the coffee machine, say hi to co-workers, and get mail from their inbox. If you are to be there at 9am, be seated at your desk and working at that time. Supervisors take notice when you’re at work early and are producing what they are paying you for. It shows you care enough to be punctual, and also shows good time management skills.

Have a Positive Attitude

Don’t walk around with a sour face and snippy attitude at work; it will only make people not want to be around you. Even if things may not being going in the most positive direction, have an optimistic demeanor at work. When people ask how your day is, don’t grumble. Give a smile and say, “Great” or “Amazing”. Beware, they may ask why, so be prepared to answer with one to two sentences. In the long run, though people don’t remember what you say, but they’ll remember that you have a smile 90% of the time that they saw you. Get enough sleep, eat well, get some exercise, and meditate so you can reset for the next day. Not only will you think clearer and be happier, but your relationships with everyone will benefit from the positive attitude.

Be a Team Player

If you want to get ahead, you must be a team player. People love knowing that you can be there to help when the time calls for it. Volunteer to help stuff envelopes, load cars, or even to bring the cake for an in-office celebration. If you’re looking to be promoted, show that you can work well with others in your department. It is a requirement that managers Make Quality Decisions know how to communicate as well as be Decisions should be well thought out reliable. Speak Well of Others

We’ve all heard news about people losing their jobs because they negatively spoke about their job on Facebook. If you are in public, private, or online, you need to be respectful of your company. If you hate your job, keep it to yourself and family (unless they work with you, keep your mouth shut, no matter the temptation). If you are trying to get noticed in the workplace, it is always better to be known for the nice things you say. Always speak professionally about co-workers, including your boss. Employees who consistently work together know who the office snitch is. Do not be this person and know when not to aid the spread of rumors. Managers know who entertain the gossip and who stay out of it. Just focus on yourself and your work and let the others chit-chat away. By following these tips, you will find that people will start talking to you more, asking your opinion, and requesting your help on team projects. How To Become A Licensed Electrician If you’re technically adept and interested in providing a service that helps the modern world go round, consider becoming an electrician. Licensed, or master, electricians are highly-trained technicians whose responsibilities include everything from replacing an electrical to wiring a newly-constructed house or building. This article provides information on the work of an electrician, the educational and training requirements for becoming an electrician, and how to get your license.

STEPS: Prepare to Become an Electrician Understand what the job entails. Electricians work in a variety of settings, including homes, businesses, schools, hospitals any type of facility that needs electricity to function. Electricians may also perform electrical work on trains, airplanes, ships and vehicles. Electricians’ work includes the following: • Reading blueprints, or technical diagrams of a work site’s electrical wiring. • Connecting wires, circuit breakers, and outlets, and replacing or adding wires, circuit breakers, connections, and fuses. • Using specialized equipment, including oscilloscopes, ammeters, ohmmeters and voltmeters, to perform their work. • Working as part of a team in coordination with the construction project manager, homeowner, or building manager of a work site. • Knowing and following building codes and regulations to ensure buildings are wired safely.

Have an aptitude for electrical work. Electricians are adept at diagnosing problems and using good judgment and the right techniques to solve them. Electricians have the following traits: • They are detail-oriented. Electricians know that glossing over details in a wiring project could at best result in non-functioning wiring, and at worst create a dangerous situation. • They have strong manual dexterity. Electricians work with small tools and parts that must be handled with care and precision. They often have to climb ladders or enter crawl spaces to perform their jobs. JULY 22, 2016 36

• They are flexible. Electricians are comfortable working at many different sites, under a variety of conditions. • They are able to effectively communicate with managers and members of construction teams.

Talk to electricians. If you’re serious about becoming a licensed technician, contact electricians in your area and set up informational interviews. • Ask if you can shadow them or help out on a project to experience a day in the life of a technician. • Seek a master or licensed electrician willing to take you on as a longer-term helper. This will give you the opportunity to gain some knowledge and experience in the field. • Ask for recommendations on trade schools and certification programs in your area.

Fulfill the Educational Requirements Obtain a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Most electrician trade schools and apprenticeship programs require this level of education. Attend a trade school or vocational school. The courses offered at trade and vocational schools provide important preparation for entering an electrician apprenticeship program. • You’ll learn about electrical theory, circuitry, mathematics, wiring, motor controls and other knowledge important to the trade. • Consider taking Distance Education Classes/electrical engineering courses online as an alternative to taking them at a local college or university. • Some electrician programs include an apprenticeship program. You will have to complete an apprenticeship program in order to get certified, so a combined coursework/apprenticeship program might be a convenient option.

Enter an electrician apprentice program. Most states require at least two years, and in most cases up to four years, of apprenticeship with a master or licensed electrician before one can take the examination to become a licensed electrician. During an apprenticeship, 21 ISSUE 1049 one earns the title of VOL. Journeyman Electrician. Many

Employer Retirement Education

Plays Key Role in Long-Term

FINANCIAL SUCCESS

Ramsey Solutions finds employee access to retirement education increases savings and confidence NASHVILLE, Tenn., July 13, 2016 A new study by Ramsey Solutions, a leading company in financial education, finds that employees with access to financial and retirement education have less stress, more savings and more confidence than those without access. Results show 40 percent of workers say their employers do not provide any type of retirement or financial education and seven out of 10 workers with zero retirement savings do not have access to retirement education from their employers.

This report is the second in a four-part series evaluating the state of retirement in America as revealed by a survey consisting of more than 1,000 U.S. adults. This installment focuses on where and how Americans learn about retirement and how that impacts their retirement savings and financial success. The most common sources American workers rely on for retirement education are their employers (35 percent) and their parents (35 percent), followed by family/friends (32 percent). Workers who listed their employers as a first or second source have more money saved than those who listed parents or family members as a top source. In addition, those with access to retirement education through their employers are more likely to experience positive emotions like excitement (49 percent) and optimism (40 percent), while those with no educational resources at work report higher levels of anxiety (47 percent) and fear (40 percent).

44

“Many employers don’t realize the benefi t of offering financial wellness and retirement education,” says Chris Hogan, financial expert, #1 national best-selling author, and spokesperson for Ramsey Solutions. “Educating employees on how to take control JULY 22, 2016

of their money and increase their retirement savings not only puts employees in a better financial position, but it also helps them reduce money-related stress so they can be more effective at work.”

Additional key survey findings include: Nearly half (47 percent) of those who have saved $250,000–999,999 say their employers are a source of retirement education—second only to financial advisors. The same percentage of Americans with zero retirement savings list family/friends as their main source of retirement education. Nine in 10 Millennials and Gen Xers and eight in 10 Baby Boomers say they would be comfortable talking with their employers about retirement planning. Similar numbers of upper- and middleincome workers also say they would talk about retirement planning with their employers. More than 75 percent of lower-income workers are open to speaking with their employers about retirement. Half of Baby Boomers say their employers do not offer any educational resources on retirement, compared to 39 percent of Generation Xers and 33 percent of Millennials. Nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of lowerincome workers say the same of their employers, along with 43 percent of middle-income workers and 29 percent of upper-income workers. Additional survey findings for this installment can be found at www.daveramsey.com/research/ retirement-education. About the Survey Retirement in America is a research study conducted with 1,016 U.S. adults to gain an understanding on attitudes, behaviors and perceptions around the topic of retirement. The nationally representative sample was polled between February 26, 2016, and March 1, 2016, using a third-party research panel. PLUMBERS, PIPEFITTERS, STEAMFITTERS and WHAT THEY DO VOL. 21 ISSUE 1049

Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters install and repair pipes that carry liquids or gases to, from, and within businesses, homes, and JULYfactories. 22, 2016 51

Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters typically do the following: • Install pipes and fixtures • Study blueprints and follow state and local building codes • Determine the amount of material and type of equipment needed • Inspect and test installed pipe systems and pipelines • Troubleshoot systems that are not working • Replace worn parts The movement of liquids and gases through pipes is critical to modern life. In homes, water is needed for both drinking and sanitation. In factories, chemicals are moved to aid in product manufacturing. In power plants, steam is moved to drive turbines that generate electricity. Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters install and repair these pipe systems. Although plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters perform three distinct and specialized roles, their duties are often similar. For example, they all install pipes and fittings that carry water, steam, air, or other liquids or gases. They connect pipes, determine the necessary materials for a job, and perform pressure tests to ensure that a pipe system is airtight and watertight. Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters install, maintain, and repair many different types of pipe systems. Some of these systems carry water, dispose of waste, supply gas to ovens, or heat and cool buildings. Other systems, such as those in power plants, carry the steam that powers huge turbines. Pipes also are used in manufacturing plants to move acids, gases, and waste byproducts through the production process. Master plumbers on construction jobs may be involved with developing blueprints that show the placement of all the pipes and fixtures. Their input helps ensure that a structure’s plumbing meets building codes, stays within budget, and works well with the location of other features, such as electric wires. Many diagrams are now created digitally using Building Information Modeling (BIM), which allows a building’s physical systems to be planned and coordinated across occupations. Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters may use many different materials and construction techniques, depending on the type of project. Residential water systems, for example, use copper, steel, and plastic pipe that one or two plumbers can install. Power plant water systems, by contrast, are made of large steel pipes that usually take a crew of pipefitters to install. Some workers install stainless steel pipes on dairy farms

and in factories, mainly to prevent contamination. Plumbers and pipefitters sometimes cut holes in walls, ceilings, and floors. With some pipe systems, workers may hang steel supports from ceiling joists to hold the pipe in place. Because pipes are seldom manufactured to exact lengths, plumbers and pipefitters measure and then cut and bend lengths of pipe as needed. Their tools often include saws and pipe cutters. They then connect the pipes, using methods that vary by type of pipe. For example, copper pipe is joined with solder, whereas steel pipe often is screwed together. In addition to performing installation and repair work, journeyand master-level plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters frequently direct apprentices and helpers.

The following are examples of types of plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters: Plumbers install and repair water, drainage, and gas pipes in homes, businesses, and factories. They install and repair large water lines, such as those which supply water to buildings, and smaller ones, including lines that supply water to refrigerators. Plumbers also install plumbing fixtures—bathtubs, showers, sinks, and toilets—and appliances such as dishwashers, garbage disposals, and water heaters. In addition, they fix plumbing problems. For example, when a pipe is clogged or leaking, plumbers remove the clog or replace the pipe. Some plumbers maintain septic systems—the large, underground holding tanks that collect waste from houses not connected to a city or county’s sewer system. Pipefitters, sometimes referred to as just fitters, install and maintain pipes that carry chemicals, acids, and gases. These pipes are used mostly in manufacturing, commercial, and industrial settings. Fitters often install and repair pipe systems in power plants, as well as heating and cooling systems in large office buildings. Some pipefitters specialize:

natural-gas power plants where heat and electricity are generated, but others work in factories that use high-temperature steampipes.

Work Environment Plumbers risk getting burned as they solder pipes. Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters held about 425,000 jobs in 2014, of which 61 percent were in the plumbing, heating, and air-conditioning contractors industry. About 1 in 10 were self-employed. Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters work in factories, homes, businesses, and other places where there are pipes or septic systems. Plumbers and fitters often must lift heavy materials, climb ladders, and work in tight spaces. Some plumbers travel to a variety of worksites every day. A few work outdoors, even in bad weather.

Injuries and Illnesses Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters have one of the highest rates of injuries and illnesses of all occupations. Cuts from sharp tools, burns from hot pipes and soldering equipment, and falls from ladders are common injuries.

Work Schedules

The vast majority of plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters work full time, including nights and weekends. They are often on call to handle emergencies, and overtime is common. About 1 in 10 plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters were selfemployed in 2014. Although self-employed plumbers can set their own schedules, they are also more likely to deal with afterhours emergencies. Source: United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics: www.bls.gov

Gasfitters install pipes that provide natural gas to heating and cooling systems and to stoves. They also install pipes that provide clean oxygen to patients in hospitals. Sprinklerfitters install and repair fire sprinkler systems in businesses, factories, and residential buildings. Steamfitters install pipe systems that move steam under high pressure. Most steamfitters work at college campuses and VOL. 21 ISSUE 1049
