CAREER THAT DOESN’T REQUIRE A FOUR-YEAR DEGREE If you are interested in a healthcare career but feel discouraged because you can’t pursue a bachelor’s degree right now, consider obtaining training at a trade school or technical college that will get you employed in a shorter time frame. You can qualify for certain occupations with two years of training or less. This allows you to work for a while and save some money, if you’re thinking about returning to school -- or you may find yourself satisfied with your original career choice. Demand is strong for workers in a variety of healthcare occupations.

Other positions require two years of education, such as:

HEALTHCARE OCCUPATIONS THAT REQUIRE TWO YEARS OR LESS OF TRAINING

Some occupational titles, such as medical assistant, have varying levels of responsibility depending on the job. You can qualify for some of these positions through a certificate program that you complete in one semester, while others require a one-year diploma or two-year degree. A medical assistant who works primarily as an office assistant requires less training than one who has clinical duties or is a billing specialist.

You can qualify for some jobs with a short training course leading to a certificate or diploma. Examples of these jobs include: • Nursing assistant • Mental health aide • Dental assistant • Physical therapist aide • Occupational therapy aide

Take More Breaks It may seem counterintuitive to take more breaks when you already feel like you

haven’t got enough hours in the day, but the truth is, the longer you sit at your desk, the less productive you’re going to be. I’m really interested in sales and was actually called by a headhunter last week about a sales job. That particular job wasn’t a fit because it required me to stay onsite at a client facility and take care of any problems that happened with their equipment. How do I find the kind of job I want? -Houston, Texas Reader A: Call the headhunter who called you and tell her that you are interested in other positions. Believe me you will be welcomed – finding great candidates for that type of job is really hard. You need to research corporate recruiters to find the ones that recruit for the type of position that you want and give them a call. CEOs Cite 6 Career Mistakes to Avoid by Robin Ryan, author of 60 Seconds & You’re Hired

Top executives sure have strong opinions on how people sabotage their own careers. In our national survey of top executives, CEOs were asked question about promotions, career paths and hiring decisions. Here are six of the more notable mistakes top executives mentioned: 1. Lack of results. Leading the list, and cited by every single executive in the survey, was the fact that not producing measurable results on the job is the sure-fire way of ending your career rise. 2. Not working at a job you’re passionate about. “People float through life as if it were boring, drudgery or a nuisance – often complaining, yet never determining what would fulfill them,” noted a nonprofit director. Several CEOs commented that you’ll never be happy if you aren’t excited, interested, and enjoying what you do. The true key to success is discovering your inner passion and then finding a way to work in that arena. 3. Not having big enough goals. “A key career stopper is setting your goals too low or not being willing to put in the time it takes to reach goals,” noted CEO Randy Sheparo. “Believing ‘I could never do that.’ or, ‘They’ll never give me a raise.’ means it probably won’t happen.” Don’t pay any attention to those well-meaning naysayers who warn you that you can’t do it. Assume anything is possible, and then do it. Take risks, try new things, initiate and learn and grow from your mistakes. “Act and you shall achieve,” notes a healthcare CEO. “Then, reevaluate and draw up even loftier goals – that’s how you’ll do more than you ever thought possible.” 4. Thinking that money is everything. A great salary doesn’t equate to happiness. The CEO of a prominent service company says, “A reality I’ve observed for most people – executive or staff – is that they realize money means very little if you are truly unhappy.” Job satisfaction is the number one reason people elect to find a new job. 5. Having a bad attitude. “It kills even the most talented,” said one top executive, who has observed many talented people rise and fall. The CEOs surveyed noted that “Nothing moves you ahead faster than the enthusiasm of a great can-do attitude.” 6. Gossiping and playing office politics. “I hate it when someone sabotages a superior to get ahead – that approach never works for long and really ends careers more than it makes them,” one CEO said. “Gossiping is an immediate termination in my company,” wrote another CEO, who’s headed several large corporations. So many top executives noted that these two activities will undermine, cripple and even destroy your career. Another executive wisely noted, “When you get enmeshed in gossiping or office politics, you forget about the goals, mission and getting the job done. I’m self-employed, and I travel about 30,000 miles a year in my van. I’m three payments away from having the vehicle paid off, but it has 170,000 miles on it. Do you think it would be a good idea for me to buy a new van and have the tax advantages that would go along with it?

I have two credit cards. One charges me an annual fee of $79 and the other a fee of $39. Should I cancel these and not worry about my credit score? I’d like to buy a house in the next two or three years.

There are two things you can do on taxes when it comes to your automobiles. You can straight line depreciate them, which is what you do with expensive vehicles, or you can write off the mileage. That’s a good idea if you drive a lot. The thing is, you get the mileage whether you have debt or not.

Dear Ken,

Let’s say you bought a $25,000 van. If you depreciate that over five years, that’s $5,000 a year. If you made $65,000, and take $5,000 from that, you’d pay taxes on $60,000. If you didn’t have that, you’d end up paying $1,250 in taxes. In other words, you’d be spending $25,000 over five years to save $1,250 a year on taxes. That’s a trade I don’t think you want to make. Remember, too, that you basically destroy whatever you drive. You have to think of your vehicle as overhead. So, you’re going to destroy a $25,000 van or a $5,000 van all in the same period of time. As a businessman, which would you rather destroy? The answer is whatever is the least

In my mind, there’s no such thing as a good credit card. My advice is to go ahead and cancel them. When you stop borrowing money and don’t have any open accounts, your credit score will slowly disappear. The big thing is that you don’t want to be caught in no-man’s land in terms of a credit score. You want either a fabulous one, which means you’re in debt all of the time, or you want no score because you don’t have any open accounts. By the way, did you know that you can still qualify for a mortgage, even with no credit score? There are still mortgage companies out there that will do manual underwriting. It takes a little extra effort, but in my mind that’s a small price to pay. Cancel the cards, Ken. I’ve never met a millionaire who prospered thanks to credit cards and their gimmicks! —Dave
