It’s for Everyone Dear Dave, My husband and I have seven kids. What parts of your program work best for large families?

Common Sense Calculation Dear Dave I make $80,000 a year, and I was wondering if there’s an easy way to determine how much money a person would need to live comfortably after retirement.

Karen John Dear Karen, Dear John, My entire plan works for a large family. Larger families just have more expenses. What does change — and you already knew this — is that it can be a larger financial burden. This isn’t criticism; it’s just a mathematical fact. When you kick things into overdrive like you folks have done, two things have happened. One, you’ve extended the time that you’re going to be supporting the kids financially. Two, you’ve got a lot of baby birds to feed and clothe. Unless you have an astronomical income, it slows down the process of hitting financial goals like getting out of debt, because you’ve got a drain on the math side of things. It’s a wonderful drain; it’s a glorious drain; but mathematically speaking where the money is concerned, it’s still a drain. You really don’t have any choice but to do a budget. Having seven kids doesn’t give you an excuse to live out of control or mean that living out of control without a plan is the definition of success. You’ve got to set more emergency categories aside in your budget. You’ve got to budget heavier for food, medical, transportation and things like that, because you’ve got more things pulling at you — and your money! —Dave

22

JULY 8, 2016

A commonsense rule of thumb, if you’ve got your money invested in good growth stock mutual funds, is to pull from those funds at a rate that is lower than which they are growing. Otherwise, you’ll destroy them, right? I tell folks if they want to pull off six percent to eight percent — I’m comfortable doing eight percent — then you’ve got to decide exactly how much you want to live on and what that means for your nest egg. If you want to live on $80,000 a year, it means you have to have a $1 million nest egg. If you want to live on $40,000 a year, then you need a half-million dollar nest egg for what we’re talking about here. To get into that a little bit further, I would advise going to Chris Hogan’s website. He’s got a tool on there that takes just a few minutes, and it will give you exact numbers on what you need to do. It’s ChrisHogan360.com, and the tool is called the R:IQ — your Retire Inspired Quotient. You can walk through it, and in just a few minutes you’ll know exactly what’s going on and what needs to happen! —Dave

WHY

Should We Hire You? Raymond Sahley

Sometimes this is the last question of a phone screen or a face-to-face interview. Regardless of when it occurs, and believe me it will, you should be ready to rock and roll with your answer! A great candidate like you should be more than ready to absolutely kill this question with your fluid communication and self-marketing skills. By preparing for this question and relaxing in the interview you will slay this hiring manager dragon. This is outside your control, but I have always found instant success when my candidates are either the first or last to interview. If you are the first you leave an impression that no other candidate can top and if you are the last you will seem like a breath of fresh air compared to the majority of crappy candidates before you by nailing this question. Your primary goal is to restate the skills you possess that are most relevant to the position and market and summarize yourself and your other qualities that make you the perfect person for the job. You don’t even have to be perfect, but just better than all the other candidates interviewing for the same position. Do yourself a favor and prepare before the interview. Don’t ever think you can just go in there and wing it. That is the first step to not getting a call back and definitely not getting the 2016 Take your ego and throw 44 jobJULY you8,want.

it out the door because unless you are prepared you will not get the job and I don’t care how great you think you are! You should have a list of possible questions in the interview and know how you will answer these questions effectively. You will then be able to answer clearly, concisely, and with more importantly with confidence.

By preparing for this question and relaxing in the interview you will slay this hiring manager dragon. When it comes time to answer be sure you target these areas: What are the company goals for this position? You should have determined this during your research phase into the company and into the position. Always go into a local unit if possible and talk to others who work for the company. This will arm you with more insight into their operations and goals and you can then incorporate it into your answer. Now that you know you have the skills needed for the job, you can determine how your skills and experience fit this

position and support those goals. Don’t be afraid to market your abilities and shared values. What are the company’s operational goals and how do they target them. Take a look at their mission statement and corporate practices. Then intertwine your answers in line with your own values and goals. You should be overwhelmingly excited about why you want this position and how you can contribute to the bottom line if given the opportunity. Three quarters of the people interviewing will not have any energy so you want to be in the top quartile for success. You want the interviewer to remember your enthusiasm and know you have the drive. You have the “it” factor they are looking for in the first place! Make perfectly clear you have excited the interviewer, but don’t come off like a complete lunatic. This can be difficult but can be accomplished with practice and preparation. You need to be very comfortable in assessing and marketing the skills you possess. It is important to be creative and flexible within the interview and based on the given situation you should be able to incorporate the core aspects of your skill set. Overall you should be at ease during the interview because you prepared. By emphasizing your attributes and marketing your abilities in your answers you will put yourself at the top of the class! Ways to Reduce Body Fatigue & RSI Risk for Electronic Assemblers by Arlissa Vaughn

Electronic assemblers are constantly working with their hands and looking down at small parts, often resulting in uncomfortable hand, neck, and shoulder fatigue or Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSIs). Getting an RSI can be damaging not only for the individual, but also the company whom he or she works for, since the injury will result in less work output. A few simple ergonomic practices to reduce muscular strain and avoid RSIs while working at the electronic assembly bench follow.

TWO

ONE

THERAPEUTIC HAND GLOVES - Available from a variety of vendors, wearing therapeutic open-finger gloves can greatly relieve hand, finger, and wrist pain caused by continuous electronic assembly motions. The basic concept of this accessory is to support, massage, and warm the wrists and hands in order to reduce the likelihood of RSIs. In a simple ESD test, anti-static wrist or ankle bands must still touch the skin while wearing the gloves in order to pass ground checks. In other words, assemblers may need to push the wrist band up the arm a little more than usual to ensure proper skin contact.

CHAIR ADJUSTMENTS - Since most electronic assembly work stations are kept at a set height, a fully adjustable chair can compensate for the needs of your body. When making adjustments to the chair, most importantly focus on the support of your arms and back, since you can always add a foot stool for your legs at a later time. Arms should create a 90 degree angle with the desk, and back should be erect. VOL. 21 ISSUE 1047

AVOID NECK BENDING - Hunching over a work bench is not an activity for which the human body is well-adapted. Many times electronic assemblers are in a position where the head is bent downward, causing discomfort in the neck and back. Long-term effects can result if poor postures are maintained for lengthy periods of time. To avoid RSIs, electronic assemblers should try to remain in an upright position, bending at the waist when leaning over is needed, instead of bending at the neck. Alternatively, raise the item you are working on for a closer view or use a magnifying scope rather than lowering your head to inspect work.

THREE

STRETCH BREAKS - Since most electronic assembly work generally involves sitting, taking stretch breaks is a chief component of fatigue-relief. A variety of stretching exercises can be done to improve the health and comfort levels of bench workers. Walking, either inside or outdoors, is probably the simplest type of stretch break. Walk to the copy machine or break room, walk to a colleagues office instead of phoning for a question, or slip outside for a few minutes of Vitamin D and reenergizing. While on your walk, add a few lunges. Lunges are an especially effective form of back pain relief, opening up the hip flexors and re-aligning the spine.

FOUR FIVE

CORE STRENGTHENING - Adding some core strengthening exercises to your off-work routine can greatly improve your at-work comfort level. The “core” refers to the muscles of the abdomen and the lower and flanking back areas. A weak core will give you poor posture and undermine any efforts you’ve made at ergonomically positioning your work space. Select a variety of core exercises so as not to focus on just one set of muscles - the back and hips are just as important as the abdomen to align the spine, ribs, and pelvis.

With the above tips, electronic assembly workers can make simple adjustments to greatly improve comfort and decrease risk of developing an RSI. VOL. 21 ISSUE 1047

JULY 8, 2016

ERGONOMIC

Workplace Exercises and Stretches Ergonomics is simply “fitting the task to the worker rather than forcing the worker to fit the task. Applying ergonomic principles to work stations can help prevent a variety of conditions, such as back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome. Small adjustments to the position of a chair, keyboard, or monitor can lead to big improvements in employee comfort and productivity.

Musculoskeletal Exercises DEEP BREATHING While standing, or in an otherwise relaxed position. Place one hand on the abdomen and one on the chest. Inhale slowly through the nose. Hold for 4 seconds. Exhale slowly through the mouth. Repeat. CABLE STRETCH While sitting with chin in, stomach in, shoulders relaxed, hands relaxed in lap, and feet flat on the floor, imagine a cable pulling your head upward. Hold for 3 seconds and relax. Repeat 3 times. Side Bend: Neck Stretch SIDE NECK STRETCH Tilt head to one side (ear towards shoulder). Hold for 15 seconds. Relax. Repeat 3 times on each side. DIAGONAL NECK STRETCH Diagonal Neck Stretch Turn head slightly and then look down as if looking in your pocket. Hold for 15 seconds. Relax. Repeat 3 times on each side. SHOULDER SHRUG Slowly bring shoulders up to the ears and hold for approximately 3 seconds. Rotate shoulders back and down. Repeat 10 times. Executive Stretch EXECUTIVE STRETCH While sitting, lock hands behind head. Bring elbows back as far as possible. Inhale deeply while leaning back and stretching. Hold for 20 seconds. Exhale and relax. Repeat 1 time.

48

JULY 8, 2016

FOOT ROTATION While sitting, slowly rotate each foot from the ankle. Rotate 3 times in one direction, then 3 times in the opposite direction. Relax. Repeat 1 time. HAND SHAKE While sitting, drop arms to the side. Shake hands downward gently. Repeat frequently. HAND MASSAGE (Note: Perform very gently!) Massage the inside and outside of the hand using the thumb and fingers. Repeat frequently (including before beginning work). FINGER MASSAGE (Note: Perform very gently!) Massage fingers of each hand individually, slowly, and gently. Move toward nail gently. Massage space between fingers. Perform daily.

WRIST STRETCH Hold arm straight out in front of you. Pull the hand backwards with the other hand, then pull downward. Hold for 20 seconds. Relax. Repeat 3 times each.
