No Arguments
Staying Away from Scams
Dear Dave,
Dear Dave,
My dad and I have been having arguments over real estate and money. My wife and I are 33, and we have a rental property. We were trying to decide whether or not to sell the rental in order to pay down on our home. My dad has been very vocal about what he thinks we should do, and it’s starting to cause problems in our relationship. The two homes are our only debt, and we make $110,000 a year. We owe $132,000 on our residence and $80,000 on the rental. We could sell the rental for around $160,000. What do you think we should do?
I’ve always wanted to work from home. How can I separate the scams online and on television from the real jobs where I can make money?
Ricky Dear Ricky, I wouldn’t sell the rental today, but it’s definitely a strong consideration in the future. You wouldn’t realize enough from its sale to pay off it and your home at this point, so work aggressively toward paying down the mortgage on your home. Then, when you get far enough down that the sale of the rental would pay it off, go for it if that’s what you both want. You’re doing really well financially for a couple your age in San Diego. Now, let’s talk about something else for a moment. I would love for you to listen to your dad for advice, but I would not be arguing with him about what you are going to do with your money. You’re a man. I don’t know if you just used the incorrect word there for how the discussion went down, but if not, I wanted to correct that as a boundary issue in your family. Keep up the good work, Ricky! —Dave
21 Issue 1031 24 Vol. March 18 - March 25, 2016
Randy Dear Randy, The vast majority of things you see in late-night infomercials and online—except of course for legitimate job hunter sites— are scams. I’m talking about the business-in-a-box kind of stuff and everything else. And I know you’ve seen the postings online that go something like, “My sister-in-law makes $50 an hour from home, and you can, too!” These scammers are the worst of the worst. Don’t waste a second of your time on that garbage. My biggest worry is that you’re looking at your career the wrong way. Just making money shouldn’t be the measuring stick of success in your professional life. Whether you’re going to start a home business or work in an office for someone else, your work should engage you in doing something you know about and love. You spend too many hours of your life at work to be miserable in what you do. Shuffling day after day through a job you don’t like—even one with a big paycheck attached—is also a bad idea. Sooner or later the fact that you don’t like your work is going to catch up with you on the job and at home. Think of something you love to do, then get creative and find a way to make money at it. It may mean turning a hobby into a part-time gig nights and weekends for starters. Who knows, with a lot of hard work and a little creativity, you could be your own boss in no time! —Dave

Healthcare Operations In career news, healthcare is everywhere. That’s because the healthcare industry is projected to add more jobs—over 4 million—than any other industry between 2012 and 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). And it is projected to be among the fastest-growing industries in the economy. “Without a doubt, there’s a lot of opportunity in healthcare,” says Stephanie Drake, former executive director of the American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration in Chicago, Illinois. But which areas of work are expected to have the best outlook? What are the occupations, and what do they pay? And how do you prepare for them? The healthcare industry provides services related to treating illness, maintaining wellness, and managing disease. For workers in healthcare, helping people is the core of their jobs. “When you work in healthcare, you serve the public every day,” says pharmacist Jennifer Adams, a senior director at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy in Alexandria, Virginia. Employment in the healthcare industry has been growing steadily for years. This growth is due, in part, to people depending on health services no matter what the economic climate. Even when total U.S. employment fell during the 2007–09 recession, for example, healthcare employment continued to rise. “Healthcare is recession-proof,” says Kim Brummett, a senior director at the American Association for Homecare in Washington, DC. “There is always a need.” And because healthcare-related jobs often require personal interaction, they are difficult to outsource or replace with automation, as happens in some other industries. “Job stability is one of the best parts about any healthcare career,” says Adams. “We’re always going to need healthcare providers,
no matter what area of healthcare you choose for a career.” And each area of healthcare is expected to offer many career opportunities through 2022. The 2012–22 projections data are from the BLS Employment Projections program and cover wage and salary, self-employed, and unpaid family workers. Healthcare growth. BLS projects healthcare employment to grow by 26 percent between 2012 and 2022, an increase of about 4.1 million jobs. Several factors are expected to lead to this growth, including the following: A GROWING POPULATION. A larger population requires more healthcare services, leading to projected job growth in the industry. MORE PEOPLE WHO ARE OLDER. Compared with younger people, older people typically have greater healthcare needs. As a result, the healthcare industry is expected to add jobs. CHRONIC CONDITIONS. More people in the United States are expected to seek treatment for chronic conditions, such as diabetes and obesity. Additional workers are expected to be needed to help prevent, manage, and treat the health concerns associated with these conditions. MEDICAL ADVANCES. Improvements in medicine and technology also are expected to increase demand for healthcare services, creating more jobs for the workers who provide these services. HEALTH INSURANCE REFORM. As more people get health insurance coverage, the number of people seeking routine medical care is expected to grow. In turn, more jobs are projected to be added for workers who treat these people.
and related subjects. “Taking math and science classes is important to just about any health profession,” says Adams. In addition, most occupations in healthcare require education beyond high school. But the paths people take to enter an occupation vary. For example, there are several ways to become a registered nurse. Many registered nurses prepare by earning an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing. Other registered nurses earn a diploma from an approved nursing program or a master’s degree in nursing. There are lots of education programs for careers in healthcare. Make sure a school’s credentials are up to date and that their program has a good reputation before you sign up. “Do your research,” says Hahn. “You don’t want to pay more than you should for a degree you need, only to find out that no hospital will sponsor you for a residency.” In addition to education, some healthcare occupations require on-the-job training—such as a residency, employer-sponsored training program, or informal training combined with experience on the job. Other occupations require work experience in a related occupation. The more you know about the occupations in healthcare, the easier it will be to identify those that best fit your interests and skills. “Learn about what each of the health professions does,” says Adams. “A lot of times we have our own perceptions about what people do, which may not be accurate.” Deciding on a healthcare occupation to pursue could be the starting point to a rewarding career. “Knowing that every day you’ve made someone’s life better,” says Adams, “there’s a huge value to that.”
In addition to offering many opportunities, the healthcare industry offers plenty of career options. Workers in healthcare do tasks such as scheduling patient appointments, drawing blood for laboratory work, cleaning facilities, preparing food, diagnostic testing, and filling prescriptions. Occupations in hospitals are diverse. However, occupations with the most projected jobs probably include ones you’d expect to find in this setting. Jobs in hospitals are often shift-based, with weekend and holiday work sometimes required, because hospitals provide care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Registered nurse Heather Hahn, for example, works a 12-hour shift 3 days a week, mostly 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Every 4 weeks she works nights for a week. There are lots of ways to start a career in healthcare. Specific skills, education and training, and other preparation—such as licenses, certification, or registration—are often required.
SKILLS
Good people skills are essential, because workers in the healthcare industry spend a lot of time interacting with patients and colleagues. Workers also need patience and emotional stability. “You really have to care about people,” says Brummett. “It’s that compassion, that empathy, that makes people good at their jobs.” It’s also important to be a team player, as these workers collaborate when delivering care. Being able to communicate with people of diverse backgrounds is also key.

STEM Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields also had many master’s degree awarded during 2012–13. Table 4 shows selected STEM occupations in which workers with a master’s degree had wage premiums. But not all occupations in these fields had a payoff for this type of degree. Mathematicians, statisticians, and workers in other mathrelated occupations had a 33 percent higher wage with a master’s degree than did those with a bachelor’s degree, the highest of the occupations in table 4. Computer systems analysts and computer programmers are among the other STEM occupations that had a wage premium for master’s degree holders.
By Elka Torpey and Dalton Terrell
Wage premiums for engineers varied by specialty. Civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and architectural and

ther occupations in this group that are not shown in
table 3 had a wage premium for master’s degree holders over bachelor’s degree holders, but the proportion of workers with a master’s degree varied. For example, nearly 80 percent of nurse practitioners and nurse midwives had a master’s degree, while only about 6 percent of these workers had a bachelor’s. In contrast, about 7 percent of clinical laboratory technologists and technicians had a master’s degree, while more than 40 percent had a bachelor’s. Not all healthcare and social service occupations had wage premiums for workers with a master’s degree. For example, even though occupational therapists typically need a master’s degree to enter the occupation, there was no difference in median wages between workers with a master’s degree and those with a bachelor’s degree. Occupational therapists are one of several occupations that may be affected by education requirements
that
have
changed:
engineering managers, for example, had median wages that were between 9 and 13 percent more for workers who had a master’s degree compared with those of workers who had a Waterway Taxi
bachelor’s degree. In contrast, petroleum, mining, and geological engineers had a median wage that was about 7 percent less for workers with a master’s degree. And chemical engineers had a median wage that was about the same for workers who had either education level.
OTHER Master’s degrees were awarded in a variety of other fields during 2012–13. But whether the degree resulted in a wage premium for workers depended on the occupation. (See table 5.) Librarians, who typically need a master’s degree for entrylevel jobs, had the greatest percentage wage premium of the occupations in table 5. Their median wage was about 30 percent higher for workers with a master’s degree than for those with a bachelor’s degree.

In career news, healthcare is
everywhere. That’s because the healthcare industry is projected to add more jobs—over 4 million— than any other industry between 2012 and 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). And it is projected to be among the fastest-growing industries in the economy.
Healthcare: Millions of Jobs Now & in the Future
Even when total U.S. employment fell during the 2007–09 recession, for example, healthcare employment continued

to rise. “Healthcare is recessionproof,” says Kim Brummett, a senior director at the American Association for Homecare in Washington, DC. “There is always a need.” And because healthcare-related jobs often require personal interaction, they are difficult to outsource or replace with automation, as happens in some other industries. “Job stability is one of the best parts about any healthcare career,” says Adams. “We’re always going to need healthcare providers, no matter what area of healthcare you choose for a career.” And each area of healthcare is expected to offer many career opportunities through 2022. The 2012–22 projections data are from the BLS Employment Projections program and cover wage and salary, self-employed, and unpaid family workers.
Healthcare Growth BLS projects healthcare employment to grow by 26 percent between 2012 and 2022, an increase of about 4.1 million jobs. Several factors are expected to lead to this growth, including the following:
A Growing Population A larger population requires more healthcare services, leading to projected job growth in the industry.
More People Who Are Older Compared with younger people, older people typically have greater healthcare needs. As a result, the
healthcare industry is expected to add jobs.
Chronic Conditions More people in the United States are expected to seek treatment for chronic conditions, such as diabetes and obesity. Additional workers are expected to be needed to help prevent, manage, and treat the health concerns associated with these conditions.
Medical Advances Improvements in medicine and technology also are expected to increase demand for healthcare services, creating more jobs for the workers who provide these services.
Health Insurance Reform As more people get health insurance coverage, the number of people seeking routine medical care is expected to grow. In turn, more jobs are projected to be added for workers who treat these people. Jobs in hospitals are often shiftbased, with weekend and holiday work sometimes required, because hospitals provide care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Registered nurse Heather Hahn, for example, works a 12-hour shift 3 days a week, mostly 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Every 4 weeks she works nights for a week.
career in healthcare. Specific skills, education and training, and other preparation—such as licenses, certification, or registration—are often required.
Skills Good people skills are essential, because workers in the healthcare industry spend a lot of time interacting with patients and colleagues.
Education & Training Building the foundation for a career in healthcare often starts long before you prepare for a specific occupation. As early as high school, you should study algebra, biology, chemistry, and related subjects. Other
registered nurses earn a diploma from an approved nursing program or a master’s degree in nursing. There are lots of education programs for careers in healthcare. Make sure a school’s credentials are up to date and that their program has a good reputation before you sign up. “Do your research,” says Hahn. “You don’t want to pay more than you should for a degree you need, only to find out that no hospital will sponsor you for a residency.” In addition to education, some healthcare occupations require onthe-job training—such as a residency, employer-sponsored training program, or informal training combined with experience on the job. “Knowing that every day you’ve made someone’s life better,” says Adams, “there’s a huge value to that.” To view the full article, visit http://www.bls. gov/careeroutlook/2014/spring/art03.pdf

sense for you.
WILL A DEGREE HELP ME? There may be benefits to earning a master’s degree that are unrelated to the potential wage premium in your desired occupation. But having this level of education might not necessarily help you meet your goals.
When researching master’s degree programs, look into the types and amounts of financial aid or other support, such as scholarships or fellowships, they typically offer. Financial aid officers at schools for your prospective programs can tell you more about these or other options available, including oncampus employment and teaching assistantships, which may help to make a program more affordable.
Start by asking yourself, “Why do I want a master’s degree?” Some master’s degree programs are academically focused; that is, the primary objective is to study a subject in greater depth. Other programs are geared toward preparing you for a job in the occupation. If your goal is to get a job, identify your ideal career and learn as much about it as you can. Career resources can help, but firsthand accounts are important. Talk to current workers to find out what employers look for when hiring—and to help you identify which master’s degree programs may be a good fit for you. Find people to talk to by tapping into your network and contacting your undergraduate school’s alumni career center. Professional associations for the occupation you’re interested in also may have workers who agree to serve as mentors.
Especially if you’re among the majority of students who need to repay loans, consider how much you’re likely to earn after getting a master’s degree when calculating the financial pros and cons. Research wages in occupations you would likely qualify for and study the data showing wage premiums to determine whether going to graduate school is right for you. You might be able to control educational costs by getting a job and finding out if your employer offers tuition reimbursement, often in exchange for your commitment to continue working for that employer for a specified amount of time.
WHAT ARE MY ALTERNATIVES? Depending on your motivation for pursuing a master’s degree, you may want to evaluate other options.
Also, review job postings. If most of the postings say that a master’s degree is required or preferred, then you can feel more confident that your time and money would be well spent earning the degree.

CAREER EDUCATION - FORTIS SOUTH
Does Higher Education Pay? I wanted to ask you this, if you don’t mind. A lot of people believe that with higher education you will make more money. While that may be true, a friend of mine who has owned his own law firm for about 10 years told me that what he’s seeing now in the courtroom is not what he saw in law school? What does that mean? Is he implying that higher learning is strictly theoretical, and that you have to build real life work experience? If my assumption is correct, why is it this way? -Vancouver, Canada Reader
A : Higher educa tion is not just to make more money. It broadens one’s mind and introduces new concepts and ideas. Your goal shouldn’t be just the money. However, statistics show that, on average, college graduates earn about $17,500 more per year than high school grads. All degrees are not the same. Many people graduate with a major that does not have many opportunities. For instance, there are fewer openings for art history than there are for engineering. They are in less demand, and they may not pay as much. I’m sure that your friend means exactly what he says: courtrooms have changed in the way they handle cases. He has been in practice for a number of years, and he has seen how it has changed. I’m sure that many of these changes have been incorporated into the law school c u r r i c u l u m b y n o w. H e a l s o c o u l d mean tha t studying something and doing it are two completely different things. It takes experience to master any field. Changing Careers… I have been an engineer in the oil industr y for many years, but I want to get out of it. There are constant highs and lows in the industry, and it seems like the lows are winning! I did a lot of things while I was with my last company, but I’ve basically been a project engineer. I would like to explore sales jobs because I know tha t I ha ve a good track record of convincing clients when I went on sales calls with the Sales Engineers. I have been on literally hundreds of sales calls because they knew I could sell the project. How do I get employers to consider me for sales?
A: Your resume lists onl y projects and does not indicate that you helped sell those projects! You need to make sure tha t it includes all of the sales calls you had and your impact on t h e p r o s p e c t . Yo u d o n ’ t n e e d t o exaggerate because you definitely h a d a n i m p a c t o n t h e c o m p a n y ’s bottom line. Al wa ys remember tha t there would BE no project to handle if the sales team hadn’t gotten the job in the first place! I think you could be ver y ef fective (and ha pp y) i n a s a l e s e n g i n e e r p o s i t i o n . Yo u have done everything except get the initial a ppointment, and it will not take much training for you to m a s t e r t h a t , t o o . Yo u r r e s u m e h a s to be geared toward sales before a recruiter will think of tha t. Man y engineers are not sales oriented. (Oka y, most eng ineers are not sales oriented.) Read ever ything you can a bout closing sales so tha t you can speak the langua ge. You are going to ha ve the usual uphill ba ttle tha t changing careers always brings, but I think you’ll win this ba ttle.

How Do I Ask…? I interviewed yesterday at a company that I really like, but it was kind of weird in a way. I really felt like I had met the manager before, but he acted like he had no idea who I was. It has been several years, but I’m sure that we met through a mutual friend. How do I ask if he is the one? -Houston, Texas Reader
A:
It ma y just not ha ve made an impression on him. Just ask him. You could sa y, “You look so familiar. Do you know John and Debbie Doe?” He’ll either say yes or no. Don’t keep on a bout it if he doesn’t remember. Or ma ybe he just has one of those familiar faces.

You’re A What? Hospitalist
Sara Royster | July 2015
Being hospitalized can be a scary time for people, and they may not always understand what’s going on, says William Atchley, a hospitalist in Norfolk, Virginia. “I try to simplify it for them, explain their treatment, and answer any questions they have.” Hospitalists aim to reduce the confusion of a hospital stay and guide patients through their treatment. Although they are physicians, hospitalists don’t have an office practice. Instead, they serve as the single point of contact for a patient moving through the hospital, from admittance to discharge—and beyond.
What They Do Hospitalists specialize in caring for patients throughout a hospital stay. This specialty is relatively new, departing from the past practice of having hospital physicians admit patients only for referring them to surgeons or other specialists for treatment. Hospitalists perform medical procedures, design treatment plans, and communicate and coordinate with patients and hospital staff, among other duties.
Care. William’s work starts when patients are admitted to the hospital. He diagnoses each patient’s condition, provides treatment, creates Vol.and 21 Issue 1031 a plan of care. “I
