“HOUSTON SALUTES AMERICAN HEROES”

VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION Houston Shows Support with AT&T Veterans Job & Resource Fair, US Family Health Plan Veterans Health Fair, 11th Hour Ceremony, and American Heroes Parade sponsored by H-E-B

HOUSTON, TX – On Wednesday, November 11, 2015, the City of Houston will honor our Armed Forces at the annual “Houston Salutes American Heroes” Veterans Day Celebration. Mayor Annise D. Parker welcomes returning sponsors AT&T, H-E-B, and new sponsor, US Family Health Plan. “It is an honor to recognize our local heroes with this annual celebration. Every year it is a source of inspiration and patriotic pride,” said Mayor Annise D. Parker. “It has been my priority to help these men and women resume a productive civilian life following their service to our great nation. Through our corporate partners AT&T, US Family Health Plan and H-E-B, we are able to provide these service members with promising opportunities to join Houston’s work force.” The annual “Houston Salutes American Heroes” festivities will begin at 9 a.m. with the AT&T Veterans Job & Resource Fair and the US Family Health Plan Veterans Health Fair which is open until 1 p.m. “AT&T is proud to partner with the City of Houston and celebrate all the hard work and sacrifices by our Houston Veterans,” said Kerrick Henny, Regional Vice President, AT&T External Affairs. “AT&T is dedicated to supporting active military personnel, veterans and their families. It is an honor to support them both at home with events like these and abroad.” US Family Health Plan will provide flu shots and on-site health screenings including: blood glucose testing, blood pressure readings, lipid panel, waist circumference and Body Mass Index exams. “As a health insurance option for active military professionals, veterans and their families, US Family Health Plan is grateful and humbled to be a part of this Veterans Day celebration,” said Anita Leal, executive director for US Family Health Plan. “We are honored to partner with the City of Houston to provide health screenings for our service men and women and recognize their courageous service to our country.” The ceremony will be held on the steps of City Hall at 10:00 a.m., ending with a Moment of Silence in memory of the WWI signing of the Armistice. Bill Balleza, USMC Veteran and television anchor will emcee the ceremony. The American Heroes Parade sponsored by H-E-B, will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Lamar and Bagby, proceeding north Vol. 20 Issue 1013 on Smith, east on Walker, November 6 - November 13, 2015 south on Louisiana and ending at Dallas.

“It is an exceptional honor to sponsor this remarkable showcase of community support and celebrate the brave members of the armed forces and their families who have sacrificed so much for the freedom of our country,” said Cyndy Garza Roberts, Public Affairs Director, H-E-B Houston. “H-E-B enjoys a legacy of employing veterans and serving current and previous members of the military making this event particularly special to sponsor.” The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs credits Houston with being home to more than 200,000 military veterans, with over 300,000 living in the metropolitan area. Our community is comprised of veterans of WWII, the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan, and every conflict and peacetime era in between. In 2013, USAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes named Houston as the number one city in the United States for veterans, because of the city’s strong economy, affordability and plentiful resources for former service members. As the military reduces its size over the next four years, Houston’s Veteran community will continue to expand as post-9/11Veterans and their families settle into new lives in our great city. Houston also has one of the largest national sources of young men and women who join the military and one of the largest destination cities for exiting military members. “Our office is proud to work directly with our Veterans and their family members, as well as the many organizations in the community providing valuable services for our heroes,” said Carl Salazar Director, City of Houston Office of Veterans Affairs. Sponsors include: AT&T, H-E-B, US Family Health Plan, FMC Technologies, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase, Walgreens, JobSparx, LinkCorps, KTRK-ABC13, Cox Media Group, The Houston Chronicle, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Houston Department of Veterans Affairs and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department. The event is produced by the Mayor’s Office of Special Events. Free parking is available from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the Theater District Parking, Tranquillity Garage, 501 Rusk, Houston 77002, entrances #2 (on Rusk) and #5 (on Capitol) only. (If you enter the garage prior to 12:30 p.m., parking remains free for the remainder of the day).

GREAT

REASONS

TO HIRE

VETERANS When you hire veterans, you’re choosing from a diverse pool of employees who demonstrate a wide range of knowledge and skills. Veterans possess a commitment to excellence, demonstrated integrity, and a drive to perform the best work possible. With them, you’ll find a level of discipline, maturity, and training that is rare in civilian employees. The following are just a few of the things you benefit from when you hire a vet.

Diversity

Veterans represent many different walks of life and are accustomed to working with all types of people regardless of race, gender, religion, or ethnicity.

Leadership

Veterans are trained by the military to accept and carry out responsibility for resources, tasks, and their own behavior. This special training consists of inspiring leadership in others and motivating others; setting examples; and giving clear and detailed directions.

Core Values

While each branch of the military has its own specific set of core values, they all adhere to the same basic principles: commitment, integrity, accountability, and “service before self”. Veterans understand the importance of these principles in building a strong team.

Team-Player Attitude

Veterans understand the value of genuine teamwork, and how diverse individuals can cooperate to achieve over-arching goals. Veterans know that real teamwork grows from a sense of responsibility to their colleagues.

Ability to Conform to Structure & Policies

Every organization needs structure and rules to prevent chaos and eventual breakdown. This is especially true in the military, which is why individuals in the service are trained to follow specific rules in their work environment. Policies and procedures ensure safety, stability, and productivity. Veterans have an understanding of the value of accountability, and perform their work from this unique perspective. They have learned to demonstrate loyalty to their leaders and units.

Ability to Handle Stress & Meet Deadlines

A typical requirement of military training is that service members be prepared to perform. They must be able to not only do their job, but do it in an efficient manner. Setting priorities, accomplishing missions, and meeting schedules are ongoing responsibilities of individuals in the military. With this responsibility comes added pressure and stress, but military personnel are trained on how to deal with these factors in a constructive way.

Advanced Specialized Training

50

Vol. 20 Issue 1013 November 6 - November 13, 2015

When you hire a veteran, you can be confident you’re hiring someone who has received advanced training in their field. Veterans have been designated a specialized focus, and have completed skill-building education for their individual jobs. They may have also received advanced and cross-referenced training on financial, computerized, engineering, medical, technical, administrative, personnel, or security types of work.

Planning & Organizational Skills

Veterans understand that careful planning and workload management are crucial to most military operations. Thoroughly considered objectives, time schedules, strengths and limitations of others, supplies, logistics, resources, and various other factors need to be kept in mind at all times. Evaluation, organization, and adjustment are continuously being analyzed.

Technology Skills

Today’s military personnel use some of the most sophisticated technology in the world. Working in the armed forces requires a high degree of technological skill and education to keep up with increasingly complex systems. Military members are frequently among the first to adopt new technology. Many vets have been kept abreast of international trends relating to business, and can bring both technological savvy and a global outlook to your corporation.

Self-Direction & Motivation

The military is one of the most demanding institutions in the world. The rigorous training military members receive breeds highly motivated employees who set high goals for themselves and achieve them. Veterans know how to analyze and resolve difficult and complex problems without constant guidance from superiors. When you employ a vet, you’re hiring a self-starter who is driven to get the job done right the first time.

Time Management Skills

Most veterans know how to multi-task, and how to accomplish individual tasks in the most efficient manner. Many have triumphed over adversity, so they know the importance of dedication and perseverance in achieving goals.

Immediate Contribution

The experience veterans have gained in the military make them valuable team players from the very first day on the job. Veterans are used to and enjoy new challenges and opportunities to demonstrate initiative. They are nimble thinkers, and are generous in giving praise to those who earn it.

Government Relocation Assistance

Veterans are given government-paid relocation when leaving active duty. The exact amount of this assistance varies by individual, but it can still help lower your company’s expenses when hiring. With relocation assistance paid, your employee search doesn’t need to be limited to the local prospects; you can seek talent anywhere you like.

Tax Breaks

One of the biggest benefits of hiring veterans is the number of tax credits available to employers. Tax credits run between $1500 to $8000.00 per veteran hire, and are counted as a one-for-one dollar credit against the employer’s payable income taxes.

Background & Security Clearance

Hire a vet, and you can gain greater peace of mind knowing you’ve employed a safe, drug-free individual. Over 90 percent of military members have had extensive background checks run for various security clearance levels. Hiring a veteran reduces the chance your company will be put at risk due to illegal behavior. If security clearance is a requirement of your company, a veteran can be transferred in status. This will save you a good deal in background investigation costs. If you’re seeking employees to fill some vacancies at your company, consider hiring a veteran. Vets bring a unique skill and mindset to your organization. They offer a level of skill, professionalism, and work ethic that is rare in today’s workforce. When you hire someone who has been employed in the military, you can be sure you’re working with someone who has a desire to do the best job possible. Hiring veterans is an economical Vol. 20 Issue 1013 solution that will strengthen your work team November 6 - November 13, 2015and give you a clear edge on your competition.

Houston Texans serve up a memorable experience for HCC Culinary Arts students NOV 2, 2015

W

hat’s cooking in the Houston Texans kitchen? Houston Community College Culinary Arts students got the rare chance to find out! They recently took a trip to NRG Stadium and saw firsthand what the players, staff and fans eat on a daily basis and during game time. This unforgettable experience called “Taking the Class to the Field” was made possible through the partnership between HCC and the Houston Texans. “It’s an opportunity for us to get students out of the classroom, come to NRG stadium – learn about some things with the Houston Texans they didn’t realize and hopefully take away something new,” said Austen Smith, director of Partnership Marketing for the Houston Texans. Students get exposure to the many facets of the Texans organization’s daily operation as it pertains to their courses of study at HCC. On this day, more than two-dozen chefs, along with Vol. 20 Issueaspiring 1013 November 6 - November 13, 2015 their Chef instructors Eddy Van Damme

and Nicholas Boland, toured the kitchens at NRG, spoke to Senior Executive Chef Mark Cornish with Aramark, and walked the famous field.

the Houston Texans and the NFL team has provided HCC access to their facilities and personnel as part of the curriculum for classes.

“I never really associated stadiums with culinary arts,” said Shantell Leleo, HCC Culinary Arts student. “It has opened up a new opportunity for me and different avenues in the culinary arts world.”

“We would love to bring on some new hires from HCC to a part of our game day experience which is the best in the NFL,” said Smith.

How to Repackage Military Skills on a Resume to Attract Civilian Employers We’ve all heard that unemployment is a serious problem in the U.S. However, for our country’s servicemen and women who are in the process of transitioning out of the military to resume their lives in the civilian world, the situation is worse. With July 2013 unemployment numbers showing 7.7% for post 9/11 veterans (above the national average of 7.4%), military veterans continue to struggle to find jobs. But in addition to entering or re-entering a really tight job market, they also face the added challenge of positioning their military skills and experience onto a resume that gets the attention of civilian employers. For example, someone who served as a gunner’s mate—responsible for operating and maintaining missile launching systems, rocket launchers and other ordnance systems and equipment—would probably have a tough time describing how their skills could benefit a prospective employer. Yet if you think about it, a gunner’s mate has to be analytical and detail-oriented. They need to be problem-solvers, strategic thinkers and good at training and supervising crews. In addition, the job demands a high comfort level with operating and maintaining machinery. All of these skills are easily transferable to today’s job market and desired by many employers. So the challenge, then, becomes figuring out how to extract the desirable experience and qualifications gained in the military and repackage them to impress prospective employers.

in radar systems, high tech communications or cryptography, who could cite that experience and relate it to today’s information and digital technology. Personnel involved in military recruiting, training and public affairs can easily adapt their communications, organization and management skills to the civilian world of sales and marketing positions, public relations, trade associations and non-profit organizations. And service members involved in construction, welding, electrical work or facility maintenance and repair services can describe how their experience gave them specific knowledge and skills that would be useful in the building trades, repair and installation work and plant maintenance. The point is to make the job application and resume stand out from the crowd by communicating how your military experience and past employment history can be of value in fulfilling the company’s needs and the requirements of the position.

Ask any employer, and they’ll tell you that a positive attitude, honesty, integrity, commitment and a willingness to do what it takes to perform the job well are major factors in their hiring decisions. Here are some key phrases frequently seen in job descriptions and ways you can use them in your application, resume or interview:

What Skills Are Employers Looking For? The first question to answer when applying for a position is: How can I make this employer see and believe that I have the skills to fill this position and bring value to the company, especially as a result of my time in the service? The answer will depend on the kind of position you’re applying for and the specific skills required for that job. For example, the gunner’s mate mentioned earlier–or sailors who served on ships or submarines–could talk about their mechanical and technical talents and their ability to learn quickly how machinery and mechanical systems work.

TAP was established to meet the needs of servicemen and women transitioning out of the military and into civilian life by offering job search assistance and workshops, support and counsel. Combined Insurance participates in TAP classes to help transitioning servicemen and women translate their military experience, repurpose their skills and revise their resumes to help make them more attractive to civilian employers. ASK DIANA Q: I have been picking up a copy of JobSparx and as I look through it, I am noticing that there is a very important industry that they are overlooking. It is called Construction Safety. Without it, almost all of the industries cannot survive. I’ll explain why. All industries are required to carry compensation insurance for their employees in case they are injured on the job or job site. The costs of the insurance calculated utilizing the Experience Modification Rate (EMR). It starts at 1.0. For every month that the company goes without an injury or lost time accident, the EMR drops a percentage point. (1.0 to .9 etc.) When a construction company establishes a low EMR such as .3 for an extended period of time, their rating informs chemical plants, refineries and other industries to that this is a safe company that is to have in their plant or refinery. The .3 EMR is equal to having a 70% reduction in the cost of compensation insurance which can be passed on to employees as raises, safety awards and other benefits. This also keeps employees to work for long periods of time because the company keeps receiving more projects.

On the other side of the coin, the company with a poor safety record and an EMR over 1.0, can have as much as a 25% penalty in their compensation insurance. Most companies have a Safety Department. Big construction projects that take years to complete can employ hundreds if not thousands of employees from various industries to complete the project. There has to be at least one Safety Representative for every 50 employees on that project. I am a Construction Site Safety Technician certified through NCCER and the Associated Builders and Contractors. I am also OSHA 30 certified, and have several other certifications. I have experience as a Contractor Safety Auditor and have Job Site Hazard Recognition experience with approximately 4 years in the safety industry. There are safety technicians out there that are qualified to keep the project safe from injuries. Thank you for your valuable time and consideration. -Dickinson, Texas Reader A: Thank you for the information. I feel like I learned a lot from your comments. JobSparx is

Q: I asked an interviewer when they planned to fill the job, and he said that they will hire when they find the right person. They have no specific timeline, but are looking for the perfect fit. I liked the answer, but I am still in the dark. How do I find out how soon I would get a paycheck? A: So you actually just want to know when you get paid, right? The first step is to discover if you fit the profile that the company needs. Ask your interviewer if he thinks you are the right person for the job. Then you can find out how often they pay. If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, just email Ask Diana. I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not ever y question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 day s.

Our focus is on supporting the specific skilled trades that help close the country’s skills gap and those that represent the significant bulk of our unfilled jobs. The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in scholarships to schools around the country, including Midwest Technical Institute, Tulsa Welding School, The Refrigeration School and Universal Technical Institute. One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”

Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY

Doing The Right Thing kid comes home wagging his tail behind him. Even if he’s stubborn, being hungry & strapped for cash — along with losing his wheels — will solve a lot of that. From diapers until they’re Our son is a senior in college. We all signed a out of the house, & even after they’re out of the contract before he left for school a few years house, you make a lot of those kinds of calls if ago stating that we would pay for school you’re a good parent. and provide him a car to drive as long as he maintained good grades & behaved in a —Dave respectful & mature manner. Over the last couple of years, his grades have dropped & he’s been acting more & more disrespectful. We learned recently that he even told a family friend Pursue Nursing that he hated us. My husband went to confront Another Way him about his behavior & this statement, & our son admitted he said it and was unrepentant. Dear Dave, My husband immediately took the car & cut I’m 45 years old and a single mom. I have a off his cell phone, like we had agreed. But decent job, but I want to go back to school to now, I just feel sick with worry. Did we do the become a nurse. The money would be much right thing? better than what I make now, but I’d have to take out student loans to make this happen. Is -Carla it worth the risk? Dear Dave,

-Susan Dear Carla, I’m sure you do feel sick inside. If you didn’t feel that way to some extent, you’d be a terrible person. This is your child we’re talking about. And even though he brought this on himself by being a twerp, & you guys are simply following through on the agreement, it hurts you because you’re human — and a good mom.

Dear Susan,

Is nursing a field worth pursuing, especially when it is something you love & would increase your income significantly? You bet! Nursing is a very honorable profession. Am I going to tell you to take out loans to make it happen? It may seem extreme to some folks, but what Absolutely not! you guys did wasn’t capricious or arbitrary. Save as much as you possibly can first — even There was a deal in place, & he knew the terms if it’s just a little each month. Then, I want you to of the contract. If someone worked for me & look into Pell Grants, traditional & non-traditional did or said or tweeted the kind of stuff you’re scholarships & what I call the “indentured talking about, I’d fire them on the spot. This kid servitude” program. There’s still something of has got to learn how to behave in the culture & a nurse shortage in this country, & there are that there are consequences for breaking your hospitals & drug companies that will agree to word and violating contracts. pay your school bills if you go to work for them But here’s some good news for you, Carla. You afterwards for a specific number of years. married a real man — a strong & loving man. I’m proud of you, Susan. Gaining knowledge & What he did took a ton of strength & courage. improving yourself & your career prospects are There are so many wimps in our culture today, all good things. But stay away from student loan but you married a good one. And whether this debt. It’s bad and unnecessary! kid realizes it or not, he’s got one heck of a dad who really cares. —Dave I’ll give you a prediction. Within 30 days, your

I met with a dear old friend last week in New York who confessed she cried for four months last year starting at her daughter’s high school graduation and continued until Thanksgiving when she first came home from college. Although her son was still at home, sending her daughter away just was breaking her heart –and Skype and texting wasn’t replacing not seeing her. I got a brief taste of what a childless life is going to be like this past week as my only son who is 17 and will be a high school senior, went off to a two week Business camp in New York City 3000 miles from our home. As the days go on, I’ve begun to feel what it’s going to be like for me when he goes away to college. Pretty darn awful! Already I’m getting depressed, mopey and teary -- and he comes back in three more days. It’s knowing that my life is going to be so radically altered and changed that inspired me to share this advice that I’m also giving to myself.

n a g n i c a F ? t s e N y t p Em swer n A e h t e b Work Cn,aBenstselling Author of Over 40 & You’re Hired By Robin Rya

When you have a void or major painful time in your life, the best way to heal it is work. Here are five options to consider: 1. GET A NEW JOB. Nothing challenges more than going out, selling yourself and pouring your energies into a new opportunity. Maybe a job that allows you to explore a new industry or interest. One that lets you travel more – or less whichever your preference is. The new organization, the new drive to be productive, meeting new people who aren’t going to be constantly asking about the child in college will help you deal with the loss and be more engaged in the work. 2. TAKE ON A MAJOR PROJECT. Think about how you could take on a new BIG project at work that would make a significant impact. Talk to your boss. Ask him or her what would be the best possible way you could contribute. Does the website need an overhaul and you’re a create content writer? Maybe a new process to improve the procurement system would help? Maybe you try your hand at project management or hiring? This is the time to be creative and innovative so seek out a mentor and executive guidance and set your goals. 3. RETURN TO WORK. Now is the time to brush up your skills and get some new training. First, decide what you want to do. Examine your interests. Talk to people performing those jobs. Look at job listings to determine the skills needed. Go to some association meetings in your area to network and access new people and their companies. If you need some help to make this step back into the workplace, I recommend you find a career counselor. 4. GET BUSY AND VOLUNTEER. Think about all the problems there are in the world that you might be able to help out with in a small way. Consider all the interests you might have, then pick one or two areas. Do some research. Explore a few organizations. Visit them test them out. See what they do. Who do they help? How well are they run? Is it worth your time? Can you make improvements? Then get active and join. By spending your time meeting new people and knowing you’re helping others you’ll begin to feel renewed. Planning ahead does help. But get started today. The most important thing is to start and know that work can help you heal through this transition. You’ll make new friends, create, innovate and achieve new accomplishments plus uncover feelings of satisfaction to help you feel better when the home no longer has kids there anymore.
