AUSTIN - Texas added jobs in September for the seventh month of job growth in 2015. The state added 26,600 nonfarm seasonally adjusted jobs as it rebounded from a revised decrease of 3,400 jobs in August. Over the year, Texas employers have increased their payrolls by 224,800 positions since September of 2014. “With the Texas economy continuing to generate a steady growth of jobs, our employers and jobseekers have a definite competitive advantage when seeking the many opportunities available in our Lone Star State,” said TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar. “Such opportunities are reflected across the diverse mix of industries that have created 224,800 jobs over the past year.” Texas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2 percent in September from 4.1 percent in August. The state continues to trend well below the national unemployment rate of 5.1 percent.

State has addeder 224,800 jobs ov the past year

Vol. 20 Issue 1011 October 23 - October 30, 2015

“Texas employers added jobs in eight of 11 industries in September, offering opportunities to a diverse pool of job seekers,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton. “TWC and the 28 local workforce boards are committed to connecting Texas workers with available jobs.” The Trade, Transportation, and Utilities industry expanded by 11,400 positions in September, leading job growth among all industries. The Education and Health Services industry added 10,900 jobs. Increases were also seen in Construction, Manufacturing, Information, Financial Activities, Professional and Business Services, and Leisure and Hospitality. “Private-sector employment was strong in September with our Texas employers outpacing the overall job growth, adding 31,200 jobs,” said TWC Commissioner Rep. Employers Ruth Hughs. “It’s no coincidence that businesses continue to make Texas their choice for growth and expansion.” The Amarillo Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) recorded the month’s lowest unemployment rate among Texas MSAs with a not seasonally adjusted rate of 3.1 percent. The Midland MSA and the Austin-Round Rock MSA each posted a rate of 3.3 percent in September. Audio downloads with comments from Chairman Alcantar on the latest labor market data are available on the TWC website press release page. Employment estimates released by TWC are produced in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. All estimates are subject to revision. vE Kirsten Ufer

How long have you been working in this position? What is your favorite part of your job?

I’ve worked here 4 years as Creative Director, but almost 10 years total at the Houston Zoo. I was hired initially in 2006 as Senior Designer, then promoted in 2011 to Creative Director.

What does your job look like on a day-to-day basis? I always chuckle when I get this question, because every day at the Houston Zoo is an adventure. We run our department like a typical design firm within the Zoo, however there are so many atypical things that happen, that are probably

Certainly, the best part of this job is the animals getting to see these amazing and exotic creatures up close, on a day-to-day basis, is really fantastic and somewhat surreal. But even more rewarding, is using my design talents to make a difference in these species’ lives. The Houston Zoo supports animal conservation programs literally all over the world. My design team has had the privilege of helping these conservation groups message to the world, and as a result, we have quite literally helped save animals’ lives in the wild! And that’s pretty exciting!

NOT common in a design firm. For instance, we might have

situations, they are walked through office areas). We might

princess or a super hero walking around the halls (before their appearance at a zoo event). Sometimes celebrities and musicians visit, and movies and tv shows are filmed here - so you really never know what you will encounter. It’s wacky, but part of what I love about working here - anything goes!

My first job out of school was at the Children’s

signage projects and environmental graphics for the museum. At the zoo, the projects were quite similar — lots of event pieces, signage, way-finding and exhibit designs, etc. so it was a really good fit for the skill-set I had developed. So by way of the museum and now the zoo, I have somewhat accidentally landed in this niche field of event and exhibit graphics.

What advice do you have for people who are going into your career field? 1. Learn how to take critique. Its a huge part of what we do and clients have opinions! It’s an art form in itself to not take the opinions personally, learn how to understand what the client really wants, and work your designs to ultimately make both the client and yourself happy. 2. Listen to your client. Learn how to read between the lines of what the client is saying they want to determine what they REALLY want. Often they don’t really know how to express what they want, so ask lots of questions and listen — THEN you can come back with solutions. 3. Say yes – take on design challenges you’ve never tried before. Don’t let the fact that you’ve never done something hinder you from trying — and you will broaden your horizons and your opportunities in life!

What is the most important thing you learned in school? An art and graphic design education was definitely a great foundation for my career. It provided invaluable first lessons in pushing creative ideas, meeting deadlines, and learning how to take critique – which is all very much a part of every day life in the professional realm. Creativity is a given in our field, but you need more than that to be successful. An education in design helped me refine those talents, and helped equip me with the skills needed to handle a professional design job.

What was the last project you headed up, and what was its outcome? The last major project I headed up was the Gorilla Mural Campaign (#gorillaart). I had the idea to commission five Houston-area street artists to paint gorillathemed murals across the city to promote the new Houston Zoo gorilla exhibit, which opened in May 2015. I hired Houston-based artist, GONZO247, as the project manager, who pulled in the other 4 artists - all well known in the Houston street art scene, too (Mr. D, Anat Ronen, Michael C. Rodriguez, and Nicky Davis). The project was very successful and the city really embraced it in a way that totally blew me away. Every newspaper, local tv station and magazine did interviews about the project. We even had some international features -

yahoo even picked it up! So that was really exciting. Sometimes these projects are a huge gamble especially when you have so many moving parts and people involved, but this one worked out and seemed to get the zoo the attention for the new exhibit it was seeking in a unique way. No other zoo in the US had used street art as a means of promotion - so it was really fun to be a part of something groundbreaking. And how could we not use guerilla marketing for the gorillas? That’s not an opportunity that comes along very often!

Can you describe a time when your work was criticized? Like it or not, criticism is the name of the game in this industry - so my work is criticized all the time. Because designers are basically service providers, we have to endure client feedback throughout the process. Clients often tell you what they don’t like, but they have a very hard time explaining what the DO like. You have to learn to read people - what they are saying, and NOT saying. And usually it’s through their criticism that you figure all of this out. When we were trying to develop the Zoo Lights logo, it was a really tricky subject matter. “The Holidays” conjures up so many different feelings and memories for people - and we were tasked with epitomizing “The Holidays” in logo form for our city wide event - which is a really tall order! We got lots of criticism on the logo variations. And at one point, our Marketing Director told us that the logos lacked “wonderment”! Which was not much help in a direction - because - what in the world is “wonderment”?? So we dug deeper and asked a lot more questions and figured out what he meant by that. And the designer, Tricia Dougat, ultimately came to the solution for the logo that we use today. But if we hadn’t received the criticism, we would not have pushed ourselves in the direction that brought us to the final logo. So criticism isn’t always bad. It’s frustrating, but I guess you could say that sometimes, criticism can actually be full of “wonderment”!

ASK DIANA Q: I interviewed for a position in Dallas, but I plan to move back to Houston next fall. I was asked about how long I planned to stay with the company, and I told them that I would stay about a year. They told me that they needed to hire someone who could stay longer. Should I lie about my plans in interviews? - Dallas, Texas Reader A: NO. Do not lie about anything in an interview. I guarantee you that a lie will come back to bite you. If you are not going to be there long, find a company that is looking only for a short term commitment. Perhaps you should think of longterm temp positions. With most companies, it takes awhile to get acclimated. By the time you were thoroughly trained, you would be ready to leave. That’s a big waste of money to the company.

slept at the office. The project manager never acknowledged any problems with the data, and when I questioned him about anything, he would just tell me to let him do it. The result was that he was taking on more and more of the work, and he simply couldn’t handle it all. He is very arrogant and wants to control every detail, but that jeopardized the success of every project. The last straw was when we were trying to finish an internal project that I could see wasn’t going to be successful and wouldn’t work. I told everyone who would listen that we shouldn’t try to go live with it, because it was going to crash. After working non-stop for almost a week, it went live and crashed. It took more than a week to fix it well enough for clients to use it. I had no desire to continue to work there, but even with a 6 figure income, I am living paycheck to paycheck right now. I took all of my personal items home and waited for the axe to fall. I wanted to be fired because I need something to help until I get a new job. Earlier than expected, I was fired last Friday (I’ve already had an interview with one of our clients!) My question is: did I miss clues that the company was so dysfunctional when I interviewed? How do I avoid this kind of company in the future?

Q: I began working for a tech company a year ago, and I really loved it at first. I was given a lot of responsibility and was able to accomplish a lot. I interviewed and helped hire dozens of people. I began to question the way the projects were managed when I realized that we -Houston, Texas Reader were expected to work non-stop for 24 hours or more to complete them. We could go home A: Wow! That is the most unreasonable and t o c h a nVol. g e20 cIssue l o t1011 h e s , b u t s o m e t i m e s w e e v e n demanding job that I can imagine. It sounds like you have PTSD! I’m not sure if there were any October 23 - October 30, 2015

58

hints during the interview process that would have warned you. It’s not even clear that there ARE questions you could ask to avoid a repeat. You probably couldn’t ask if they ever have any projects that require you to sleep only two or three hours per night or if their project managers are insane. You had a soul sucking experience, and research is your only answer in the future. Go online to see if former employees have reviewed and rated the company. Check with everyone you know to find out about reputation and even gossip. More than likely ex-employees will be the best bet for information. Check LinkedIn for people who have worked there recently and contact them. I’m glad that you’ve already had an interview and hope that you can relax enough to come down from this experience. Good luck!

If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, just email Ask Diana. I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not ever y question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 day s.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The mikeroweWORKS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes hard work, supports the skilled trades, and challenges the persistent belief that a four-year degree is automatically the best path to take. The Foundation awards scholarships to men and women who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for mastering a specific trade. Our focus is on supporting the specific skilled trades that help close the country’s skills gap and those that represent the significant bulk of our unfilled jobs. The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in scholarships to schools around the country, including Midwest Technical Institute, Tulsa Welding School, The Refrigeration School and Universal Technical Institute. One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”

and I agree with your stance on that. I started college last month, and scholarships and Pell Grants will pay for everything. But is Dear Dave, saving money really that important if you’re My husband and I live on a budget and are young and have a good income? What good getting out of debt. Our daughter is in high does money do you if you don’t use it for school, and we’ve been teaching her about something? your plan. Is it realistic to expect a 16-yearold with a part-time job and a hand-me-down Tim car to make and live on a budget? Marcie Dear Marcie,

Anyone who has an income can make and live off a budget. Your daughter is at a great time in her life to learn how to prioritize spending, saving and giving — and making her money behave! Even in her situation, when she’s still living at home with you guys, there are plenty of things she can include in a budget. Think about it: She needs gas for the car, basic maintenance and insurance … things like that. She’ll also want a little spending money, and she might even have ideas of going to college. So sit down with her and show her how to make out a budget to figure out the upcoming month’s expenses before the month begins. Make sure she knows how to properly balance and reconcile her bank account, too.

I know you’re all about getting out of debt,

Dear Tim,

Congrats on beginning college! I’m glad, too, that you understand how I feel about debt. But it worries me that you seem to think that you’re not doing anything with your money when you save. Saving money is one of the most important things you can do with your money, because when you save you’re planning for the future and the unexpected. Retirement may seem long way off right now, but think for a second how it would feel to have worked your entire life only to end up broke at age 65. If that thought doesn’t scare you, it should. Have you ever seen someone that age, or older, wrangling shopping carts in the rain or flipping burgers at a fast food joint? In most cases, it’s not because they love the job and being around people. They’re doing it because they have to, because they failed to plan for the future and save some money. Let’s talk about something a little closer. You said you agree with my stance on debt. Okay, so how are you going to buy your next car without going into debt if you haven’t saved anything? How will you survive if you get laid off from your job if you haven’t saved any money? Bad things happen when people are foolish enough not to save money. Saving is doing something with your money, Tim. It’s one of the most important things you can do with money — for yourself and those around you! — Dave

OVERCOMING YOUR JOB INTERVIEW WORRIES By Robin Ryan, Bestselling Author of “60 Seconds & You’re Hired”

A

new national poll from Harris reveals that 92% of job seekers express having fears around the job interview. Certainly this highly competitive, high pressure meeting with the hiring manager should bring on some nervousness but most people dread this stress ordeal. Do you get nervous? Worry you’ll mess up on answering the tough questions? Think that you are over-qualified? Won’t have enough experience?

WRITE OUT ANSWERS Review typical & tough questions. Craft answers that are concise (60 seconds or less) and demonstrate your ability to completely do the job. Think about examples of past work experience that you can use to answer questions that demonstrate your leadership skills, organizational ability & the fact that you achieve the needed results and thus were successful on the job.

Men & women differ on what their interview fears are. While woman are most afraid of being too nervous or not being able to answer a specific question, men are most worried about being overqualified.

The interview, without a doubt, is the most important part of getting the job you want. Preparation is the key to having confidence to ace it.

In the interview you must sell yourself effectively. Here are my top 5 recommendations to deal with these issues.

PREPARE! Nothing beats researching the company, checking LinkedIn for insights on the hiring manager and using your network for insider information as to what are the key problems the company & that department faces. DEFINE YOUR RESULTS You must be able to discuss your past accomplishments and the results you’ve had working in previous positions. This is critical to your success. Outline process or system improvements you’ve made, money or time saved, dollars you added to the bottomline, etc.. Vol. 20 Issue 1011

October 23 - October 30, 2015

OFFSET NERVOUSNESS Heart-thumping, face-twitching, voicequivering nervousness will reflect poorly on you & the strong selfconfident, “I can solve your problems” impression you are trying to make. To rid your body of nervous tension, just before you go into the interview find a private spot outside or in the restroom, shake out your arms, legs & hands. This physical exercise releases tension that has built up and helps calm you. Take a several long, deep breaths. Clear your mind. Then, close your eyes & visualize a scene about winning, seeing yourself as the “winner”. This visualization helps get you into a positive, “I can do it” framework.

ROLEPLAY Practice answering questions by having a friend, colleague or spouse ask you interview questions. Ask them to give you feedback on the effectiveness of your answers, plus comment on your non-verbal communication - vocal tone, smile, eye contact -- & to point out any distracting fidgeting you may be unaware of.
