Dumble Street Alvin, TX 77511 Signup today for this free workshop at www.lifeskillshouse.org! Childcare and lunch provided with RSVP! Life Skills House is hosting an “Identity Matters” workshop. We believe that one’s success in life is largely attributed to one’s perception of self. How we think and feel about ourselves and our abilities will generally dictate our actions and eventually determine our destiny. Unfortunately, with different life encounters, our true identity tends to get somewhat distorted. As we adjust our mindsets and replace faulty thought patterns with the truth, then there is no limit to our potential accomplishments. We aim to help people tap into and unleash their God-given gifts and talents. We also want to help them understand the importance of safeguarding their identity through practicing effective safety measures on social media. Additionally, we aim to help them take a proactive approach in safeguarding their children as well. Leah Gonzales - 832-647-3161

Vol. 20 Issue 1006 September 18 - September 25, 2015
“We’d like to offer you the job.” Those are wonderful words, words that every job candidate wants to hear. Whether you are focused on getting the coveted promotion, want a new career direction or just need a job, you must be ready to deal with some steep competition. Keep in mind that you may need to work on making yourself an attractive job candidate. To increase your opportunities to move ahead, try implementing these success strategies: WRITE A TOP NOTCH RESUME. Employers say that only a targeted resume crafted to fit a specific job works in this marketplace. Limit your resume to no more than two pages and focus on outlining your accomplishments and results achieved over the last 5-7 years. Define how you have saved time, increased productivity, cut costs and added to the bottom line. Make sure your resume screams, “I’m a get-the-job-done kind of person.” Add customize a cover letter to add to it. NETWORKING IS A MUST-USE COMPONENT FOR SUCCESS. To be effective, you must be very strategic. 63% of all jobs last year were found through contacts according to the Department of Labor. Cultivate your network but refrain from expecting others to figure out how you would fit into their organizations. Find the job openings you want. Then ask a friend or relative to help by forwarding on your resume to their HR department or the appropriate hiring manager. JOIN LINKEDIN. HR professionals and recruiters search profiles looking for people just like you to hire. They also review profiles before they call people in for an interview. Be sure you profile is current, states some key accomplishments and has a friendly photo headshot. Search for former bosses, colleagues and friends...all of who can help you land a key job. Check the listed job openings as these positions usually pay over $100K. PRACTICE YOUR INTERVIEW SKILLS. Expect tough questions, such as “why I should hire you?” or “Describe a recent mistake your boss pointed out to you”. Think about any objections the employer may have in mind - many worry about an older worker not being as innovative or hard working. Best to craft answers to dispel these doubts. Pre-determine some specific work examples outlining you accomplishments. Dress up! Too casual is unprofessional, but this is a mistake many people are making. NEGOTIATE THE SALARY. The biggest salary increases are the result of negotiating effectively. Know exactly what your skills are worth in the marketplace so you do not undersell yourself. (If you aren’t certain click to use the free salary survey tool.) Never mention money first. Wait until the position is offered. This preserves your negotiation power. Many clients have followed this advice and found themselves $10,000 richer. Copyright 2014 Robin Ryan. All rights reserved. WHY GETTING
AISN’TDEGREE ALWAYS THE BEST
INVESTMENT
The idea of getting a college education for the sake of learning how to think has become passé. Now, young people see college as an investment, thinking, If I (or my parents) pay to earn a degree now, I can make more money later. In many cases, the investment pays off. Most high-paying jobs require degrees, and within industries, those with degrees are often paid more than those without. But is college always something worth what you pay for it? Some people still hold the old-fashioned notion that an education for the sake of education is worthwhile, but if you are someone who doesn t enjoy formal learning and you are getting a degree only for financial gain, consider whether you would be better off investing your money in something other than an education. Here s why: Some jobs that pay well do not require a college education. Even college students with declared majors may find that their chosen careers are not exactly what they expected. For example, an electrical engineering student may realize that he doesn t really want to be an electrical engineer; he wants to be an electrician. If he continues in the degree program to become an engineer, he could still change his career, but he would be a few years behind in experience for the job and out more than a few dollars for his engineering degree. The average salary for electricians hovers around $50,000, depending on the area, which is more than the salaries of many people with degrees. High school students inclined to learn a trade may find that a vocational-technical school and apprenticeship programs would more than adequately prepare them for a career that will earn them a decent wage. Many industrial areas also have one or two factories that are known for paying well. The competition to get a job at one of these factories is often fierce, but workers with a high school diploma or GED can easily make as much as many of their collegeeducated neighbors.

not for the money. If you’re considering this type of work, try some volunteer work in the field before you start school to be certain you will really love what you do. Student loans for high-education, low-paying jobs will likely add a financial burden, rather than bringing you greater financial gain.
Wealth doesn’t always come from employers, either. When researching The Millionaire Next Door, Thomas J. Stanley and William Danko found that 2/3 of millionaires were self-employed at a time when self-employed people made up only 20% of the population. With some exceptions (physicians, lawyers, and ministers in denominations that require divinity degrees are three), few people need a degree to work for themselves. Selfstarters likely to become entrepreneurs should be capable of teaching themselves nearly everything they need to know to run a business well and to invest their profits wisely. A degree could be handy, though, to make money working for someone else so that you can save enough to start your own business. On the opposite end of jobs that pay well for those without degrees are jobs that require a high level of education but pay relatively little. Social workers and librarians are two examples of employees who often have master’s degrees but make about the same amount as people in other fields with high school diplomas or associate’s degrees.
Even getting a degree in a field that offers high salaries does not guarantee that a high-paying job will be available for you when you graduate. Our culture has placed such an emphasis on the value of a college education that more and more people are getting one. In 1950, only 3.5% of people in the U.S. had four or more years of college (percentage calculated: this percentage with figures from the Historical Census Browser). Fifty years later, 24% of Americans aged 15 and over had at least a bachelor’s degree. As a result of this abundance of people with post-secondary education, more people are competing for the jobs that require an education, and higher-level jobs require increasingly higher levels of education. A century ago, teachers in one-room schoolhouses would be considered
well educated with a two-year degree from a normal school; now, public school teachers are required to work toward master’s degrees. Earning a decent wage without a degree is becoming more difficult, but low-wage jobs still need to be filled by someone. Often, that someone is a person who once would have been considered overqualified for the job. When students graduate from college to find few open positions in their field, they may wind up paying off student loans by working in jobs they could have done without a degree. Is higher education valuable? Yes. Are you likely to make more money if you have a degree? Yes. Is a college education always a sound financial decision? No. Some people do not thrive in academia; some would prefer the type of work that doesn’t require a degree; some will find that their degrees bring much value in the form of higher job satisfaction and quality of life but not in the form of high salaries. When you consider spending money on an education for yourself or your child, think about what you expect to get in return. If it’s simply a higher salary, your investment in tuition is a lot like an investment in the stock market - it will probably pay off, but it’s not a sure thing ™
People who take these “do-gooder”type jobs usually do so for the love of the work and the people they help,

Vol. 20 Issue 1006 September 18 - September 25, 2015
SEP 11, 2015 - The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has awarded Houston Community College $4.2 million to fund registered apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs in the emerging Healthcare and IT industries, as well as upgrade an existing program in plumbing occupations. HCC is the only college in Texas to receive the DOL American Apprenticeship Grant. The program will serve 620 workers in the Houston Gulf Coast and Greater Dallas Regions in three years. CVS Health, JPMorgan Chase, CFI Mechanical, Inc., Humphrey Company Ltd., Gowan Inc. Mechanical Services, Gulf States Plumbing, Way Engineering, Joint Apprenticeship Committee, Texas Workforce Commission, HGAC, and Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) are among the project’s partners. Through the grant funding, the partners will develop and provide apprenticeship programs in high demand industry occupations, which include pharmacy technologist, computer support analyst, system engineer, and infrastructure engineer. The plumber employer partners will expand and upgrade the digital training for current plumbing apprenticeship programs with a new course in the use and operation of digital layout positioning equipment. They will train 192 plumber incumbent apprentices to improve the digital/middle skills workers in the plumbing occupation. “This collaborative grant is
representative of the synergy between community colleges and industry aimed at meeting the workforce middle skills gap in high growth and high demand areas,” said Madeline Burillo, Ed.D, associate vice chancellor of Workforce Instruction. “By creating more opportunities and job-driven training initiatives through hands-on apprenticeships, where workers earn and learn at the same time, we are increasing the relevancy of training and education and building career pathways to secure jobs.” CVS will employ 310 Pharmacy Technician apprentices in the Houston and Dallas regions and 75 pharmacy benefits managers apprentices in Dallas. HCC and DCCCD Pharmacy Tech programs will serve as pre apprenticeship and lead to state certifications. JP Morgan will provide apprenticeship training to 43 HCC AAS graduates from the Computer and Information Technology program. All employers will also provide workforce curriculum and skills competencies required for the proposed apprenticeship framework. “Through our Centers of Excellence model, these efforts further expand apprenticeship opportunities with clear job progressions and enhances the competitiveness of businesses by enlarging the pool of highlytrained workers,” said Burillo. ASK DIANA Q: I like my job, but I know that I will never get promoted while I work here. My boss is only 51, and he plans to retire from this company. I am also 50, and I would like more responsibility and money. I haven’t started looking yet, but I’m worried that my age is going to make it hard to get a job with another company. I don’t want to stay stuck in the same job for the next 15 years. Are companies hiring older workers right now? -Houston, Texas Reader
A: Yes, of course they are. There are a lot of reasons to hire older workers and very few reasons to reject them. Right now, we are in something of a shortage of qualified, experienced workers in many fields. The Baby Boomers are reaching retirement age, and there is a gap in trained people to replace them. I would like to know, though, if you have thoroughly explored opportunities at your current job. If you want more responsibility, does it have to be in your current department? Have you told anyone that you feel you could make a bigger contribution to the company? Let them know that you would welcome more work and responsibility. If you really concentrate on what you could do that would help the company make their goals, you would certainly be appreciated by them.

Do you think 6 years is way too long for a college degree? A: Be nicer on the initial phone screen. The phone interview is the most important because you will either get a second interview, or you will get screened out. Female Plumbers Thrive in Male Dominated Industry HOUSTON, Texas (07/29/2015) – Plumbing has historically been considered a predominantly male-centric profession. However, this gender bias is seeing a challenge as more women enter into the plumbing industry and not only succeed, but excel in the profession. “We have started seeing a shift in mentality when it comes to what are traditionally considered ‘male’ and ‘female’ professions”, stated Mary Kennedy Thompson, licensed plumber and President of Mr. Rooter Plumbing. “The idea that women aren’t capable of doing the job of a plumber, or other traditionally male-dominated trade professions, is quickly fading and we are seeing a generation of strong, talented women entering the industry.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for plumbers is strong, with an estimated growth of 21 percent by 2022, versus an average
of 11 percent growth across all other industry occupations. In addition, the median age in the plumbing industry continues to climb, making plumbing a viable career path for those seeking to enter the industry and capture viable market share. “We have seen a tremendous amount of positive benefits to having Daisy on our team”, said Natalie Saikowski, Executive Vice President of Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Montgomery County and Greater Houston Areas who employs Daisy Herrera, a female plumbing technician. “Our customers love and trust her. We have customers who call in each week to request Daisy.” Herrera, who was recruited directly out of Everest Institute’s plumbing certification program, has excelled in the profession. “I think more females should consider the industry because I believe we can be the cutting edge in the quality of work pro-

plumbing technicians when they visit the home. Therefore, having a woman show up at the door immediately puts them at ease”, said Saikowski. With a growing desire for female technicians, Mario and Luigi may soon become Maria and Luigi.
“As the shortage in skilled tradesmen and plumbers continues to grow, we need to be looking for ways to increase the recruitment pool”, stated Thompson. “One of those ways is through the recruitment of women.” In addition, according to Saikowski, women technicians tend to make homeowners feel more comfortable and at ease about the person who is about to enter the home to fix their problem. “Women tend to be the person greeting our

The mikeroweWORKS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes hard work, supports the skilled trades, and challenges the persistent belief that a four-year degree is automatically the best path to take. The Foundation awards scholarships to men and women who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for mastering a specific trade. Our focus is on supporting the specific skilled trades that help close the country’s skills gap and those that represent the significant bulk of our unfilled jobs. The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in scholarships to schools around the country, including Midwest Technical Institute, Tulsa Welding School, The Refrigeration School and Universal Technical Institute. One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”

Houston Electrician How long have you been work- What advice do you have for Tell us about the last time you ing as an electrician? people who are going into your went above and beyond the call career field? of duty at work. I have been working as a licensed electrician for 15 years, but started out as a kid following my dad around at job sites. Since receiving my license, I have worked for PR Electric as well as an independent contractor.
What does your job look like on a day-to-day basis? Every day is different. I usually leave the house by 6am to miss morning traffic. Depending on the jobs we have lined up, some days are very stressful, and others are pretty easy. By 5:00, I am back at the shop, and my coworkers and I watch the news together before heading home so we can miss some of the traffic. I get home around 6:00. My work week averages about 40 hours.
What is your favorite part of your job? Seeing the results of my hard work, and the clients being satisfied with my work. One of my strongest areas is wiring, and I am doing a lot of that in new builds as well as remodels.
Tell us your story of how you came to be in this position. I fell in love with the electrician trade as I traveled to work sites with my father. He is a Master Electrician, and taught all of his children the importance of hard work. I started going to work with him when I was 5 or 6 years old, and continued to work with him until I was an adult. Sometime in my teens, my dad allowed me to learn the trade with hands-on experience under his watchful eye. Eventually, my brother started his own company, PR Electric, and I went to work with my family. All the men in my family are electricians, and we are a tight-knit group.
Work steadily for your Master Electrician certification. There are three levels of electrician: Apprentice, Journeyman and Master. Each of these has a different payscale, with the highest paid electricians being Master Electricans. You will need to pay to take your certification test with the State of Texas, and need to be recertified occasionally.
This past weekend, I worked on a Saturday so we could finish a job. The homeowner kept making changes to their work order, and instead of waiting until Monday to finish, we went in on our day off to complete the job and keep the customer happy.
What is your greatest achievement outside of work?
Where would you like to be in your career 5 years from now? My family. My wife is awesome! She is I would like to be retired, but because I love what I do, I don’t think that’s going to happen. I am working to get my Master Electrician certification so I can earn more.
the rock in our family and keeps me going! I also have an 11 year old son and a 15 year old stepson, but at this point, neither of them seems to want to follow in my footsteps. My whole family is very close, and we do a lot together. I have a lot to be proud of.
What kind of education did you need to get before you could start your career? When I was in high school, my dream was to play professional baseball. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out, so I chose to attend a trade school to get my electrician certification. After that, I started work at my brother’s company and have been there ever since. There is a lot of opportunity to grow in this career field, and so many new things to learn about as technology advances. If this is the career you want to enter, you will need to be certified by the State of Texas. You can find out more on the state website www.tdlr.texas.gov/electricians/elec.htm . Apprentice electricians do not need a lot of experience, so you can find a company that is hiring apprentices and try the job for a while. You may be like me, and continue to grow with the company, staying for a long time, or you may decide that this isn’t the career field for you. Either way, you gain some good experience without paying for a full four year education.
Robert Conchola, a Journeyman Electrician, works on the wiring in new home construction.
