AUSTIN - The Texas seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 4.1 percent in August, the lowest rate of unemployment for Texas since January of 2001. The Texas rate continued to trend below the national unemployment rate, which stood at 5.1 percent in August. Leisure and Hospitality led all major industries in Texas with an expansion of 5,900 jobs in August. The Professional and Business Services industry added 4,000 positions over the month, and Construction gained 3,200 jobs in August. Other Services, which includes religious and civic organizations, personal services and repair businesses, added 600 jobs in August. “The increase in jobs for key industries in August, such as the addition of 3,200 positions in the Construction industry, and the decline in the unemployment rate to the lowest point in 14 years, demonstrates the resilience and strength of the Texas economy,” said Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chairman Andres Alcantar. “TWC is committed to helping these expanding industries meet their workforce needs while connecting job seekers to a variety of services and job-training opportunities.” “We are continuing to see a steady decline in the rate of unemployment in our state and at 4.1 percent, the August rate is among the lowest our state has ever seen,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton. “While most regions of our state are seeing these declines, we are working hard with our local workforce partners to address the needs in those regions that are still struggling. I urge all job seekers to contact their local Workforce Solutions office for assistance with training and job placement.” The state’s overall seasonally adjusted non-farm jobs contracted by a net 13,700 positions in August following four consecutive months of employment increases, including a revised gain of 25,800 jobs in July. “As advanced job skills are a growing demand throughout the world, we encourage all employers to utilize TWC’s many resources to aid in the search for highly qualified Texans to fit their needs,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Ruth R. Hughs. “Workforce Solutions offices across Texas can help employers with job-matching assistance, applicant screening and local labor market information.” The Amarillo Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) recorded the month’s lowest unemployment rate among Texas MSAs with a not seasonally adjusted rate of 3.1 percent. The Midland and Austin-Round Rock MSAs each posted a rate of 3.2 percent in August. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A NETWORK LAB MANAGER? I started in the computer field about 20 years ago, and have held this particular job for the last 3 years. I have been with this company for 10 years. As the Lab Manager, my job is to shepherd company software from coding and developers to deployment.
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB LOOK LIKE ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS? First thing in the morning, I check my emails. Since we have a worldwide team, I need to address issues that may have come up overnight. Our team meets each morning to discuss processes we are each working on, and to report progress on project assignments. Our software development team works specifically with servers and creates software that tests and runs scans on user’s systems to check peripherals for issues and solve problems. I also work with other teams within the company, so we meet to make sure our departments are working well together on upcoming projects.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB? I really enjoy setting up network servers and configuring the hardware. It’s closely related to things I have done in the past, and I like problem solving. I tinker with computers in my spare time, setting them up and making them work, and being able to do that at work is a plus for me.
TELL US YOUR STORY OF HOW YOU CAME TO BE IN THIS POSITION. I was in Graduate school, newly married, and we found out we were having our first child. Looking at my career path and options, I realized that the degree I was pursuing would not only be expensive, but largely useless in supporting a family. Luckily, I married into a computer ‘geek’ family (my father-inlaw worked for IBM for 30 years) and learned how to reload a computer. I figured this was something I could do for a living and enjoy, so I decided to get my Novell Network certifications at a local community college. Novell was the networking standard in the 1990’s before Microsoft. While I was in classes, I was able to get a computer test lab job, and continued to learn both in class and hands-on. At the time, if you had a Novell certification and a pulse, you could get a pretty good job. I continued to take classes and gained other certifications, including Microsoft, and also learned about Cisco

TELL US ABOUT A TIME WHEN YOU WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY AT WORK. I remember when my daughter was born, she was in the NICU, and my wife was also in the hospital, I was in charge of implementing a new network infrastructure project. Even though I had time off, I still made it in to the office to make sure things got done.
WHAT WAS THE LAST PROJECT YOU HEADED UP? I was in charge of upgrading 1100 laptops and computers to Windows 7 from Windows XP for an oil and gas company. Much of it was done remotely at night.
WHAT WAS THE OUTCOME? They were very happy with the results. It wasn’t a seamless execution, but I was able to effectively troubleshoot any issues, and not disrupt the company’s regular business.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR PEOPLE GOING INTO YOUR CAREER FIELD? It depends on the person. For my son who is preparing to go to college, I would recommend getting a Bachelor’s in Computer Science, and getting as much hands-on experience as possible. Technology is changing so quickly that practical application is important to keeping up with it. On the other hand, if someone is in a job that doesn’t look like it has much of a future (like I was), then get certified for specific practices and work your way up. Make sure your classes are taken through accredited schools.

I don’t make excuses for what I did. Honestly, going to prison has nearly ruined my life, but it may also be the best thing that could have happened. I emerged from that experience a more mature, thoughtful, loving person. I want more than ever to prove my worthiness to my community, people who trusted me, and I let them down. I want to be a MUCH better man in the remaining 15-20 productive years that I have left than I ever was in the first 30 or so. Without someone having the courage and concern to hire me, I may not get that chance.

After that, I gave up caring what people think a long time ago. Otherwise, if all they do is throw it away, well that’s about what they’ve been doing already.
A: If you are dedicated and determined to do the wrong thing, go for it. If you don’t care what recruiters think, this is the perfect strategy. I’m here to tell you that there is no way to get in the door without giving a darn. Yes, you do need to tell them up front. No, you don’t have to tell them before they see your resume, but you can’t wait until an offer is made. You can tell them at an interview and make sure you put it on the application. Grab bag spam emails don’t work because recruiters know you aren’t interested in their company or their job. A: It’s been awhile since I’ve heard from you. I’m (But you don’t care what they think, right?) sorry that you are still having issues finding work. You have spent 6 years trying to get work by playing I always reject people who try to play on my emotions
in an effort to manipulate me. One has to assume that someone who does that will be the office complainer. I hire people who are going to succeed because that benefits the company as well as the employee. Instead of being belligerent, you need to approach this logically. I wouldn’t pretend to know how many letters you’ve sent, but I have never seen a letter from you that would make me want to offer you a job. The way we treat people who have served time and completed their punishment is counterproductive, but you need to regroup, calm down and get some help in how to apply without offending.

Continued from page 52 Based on their research, they created a decision tree to help guide nurses. Working in various departments at Kingwood Medical Center, students Cassandra Smith and Ruby Hernandez experienced emergent situations and worked closely with the rapid response team to try to pinpoint patients’ turn of events. The students were able to review the trends in patient data to identify changes that led to the emergency event. The students came up with a way to reinforce the ue of the hospital’s MEWS scoring table as a method for nurses to implement this back into their practice of caring for their patients. During rotations, students observed multiple instances
of patients being readmitted to the hospital. Readmission rates have been a known challenge to healthcare organizations across the country and our local hospitals experience the same challenges. Students Amanda Dietz and Malinda Long delved deeper into the subject and observed that hospital readmission within 30 days is a problem that shows decline in a patient’s health status, and for hospital reimbursement due to the Medicare Hospital Readmission Reduction Program (HRRP), a provision in the Affordable Care Act. As a result of their research, they introduced the use of Project Boost by the Society of Hospital Medicine. This program uses Teach Back, which is a thorough discharge teaching module that reduces common causes of hospital readmission and

identifies patients who are at risk for readmission. “I have been incredibly impressed with the caliber of evidenced-based research done by these honors nursing students. All four projects were very current and relevant to the patient issues that we see today,” said Catherine Palmer-Loar, Intensive Care Unit manager at Kingwood Medical Center. racy was a career counseling client I’d help get a nice job promotion and raise. A year later she got promoted again. This time she got a new title, but her employer gave her no additional compensation for taking on more responsibilities. She was unhappy and convinced she’d never get a raise since the company’s budgets were very tight. Asking appropriately often leads to more dollars showing up in your paycheck. Always link your request to the value and skills you offer and note how the employer will benefit.
