High School Education and Future Careers
by B. E. Conrad
What Schools Can Do to Prepare Young People for the World of Work
In
many ways the future has never been more uncertain for high school students. With outsourcing threatening even high paying white collar careers, some young people are wondering if any career is truly bulletproof. Perhaps that is why so many high schools are looking for ways to train their students for real careers, rather than simply preparing them for more and more education. Making real career training a part of the high school experience gives young people a foundation they can build on for the rest of their lives, whether they ultimately go on to college or not.
Computer Programming & Computer Training Computer skills are critical in the modern world, and many of those skills can be taught while students are still in high school. Computer programming and web development skills can become a major part of a high school curriculum, and that can help prepare students to move right from school to a high paying career in IT.

Carpentry is another area where both students and schools can benefit from internships, apprenticeships and special training programs. These types of programs have been used for centuries throughout Europe, and many European countries still rely as much on apprenticeship training as they do on formal higher education.
Plumbing Skills A good plumber can earn enough to enjoy a solidly middle class lifestyle, and schools can help to train future plumbers within their classrooms. Plumbing is another profession that is hard to outsource, and another one that lends itself well to an apprenticeship program. High schools can team up with local plumbing firms, and with local businesses who plan to hire plumbers, to give their students immediate access to real world learning opportunities, and immediate access to jobs when they graduate.
Unlike so many jobs, the job of auto mechanic is a very difficult one to outsource, and that can create a sense of job security that even many college graduates do not have. After all, when a grocery store needs their refrigeration unit fixed, or an individual needs their car fixed, they need to hire a local person to do the work. That means that the mechanical trades are likely While many companies prefer that their to be among the most secure going programmers and other computer forward. It’s Time for a Career and Life Checkup By: Linda Cattelan
Anytime is a great time to reflect on the past twelve months and acknowledge your personal and professional growth, your accomplishments, and all of your experiences. As you look back and review it‘s also a good idea to celebrate yourself!
family, employees, bosses, colleagues, mentors, or others in your life. How did they support you? What role do they play in your life? Who do you wish to acknowledge most?
•What are your greatest successes and accomplishments? Sometimes a series of minor successes and accomplishments can add up to major strides forward. It’s a good idea to reflect on small wins as well as major accomplishments. Consider maintaining an annual journal to track your successes all year long.
•What was your biggest disappointment this year? How did you handle the situation? How did you or how will you move on from it?
•What was your biggest learning experience this year? Consider the following How did you grow from it? questions to help you review How will you apply this learning the past and plan for the future: moving forward?
Article Source: http://www.articlebiz.com/article/1051628309-1-its-time-for-a-career-and-life-checkup/
•What would you like to celebrate? Perhaps this year you received a promotion, started a business, grew your family, moved residences, or left a job you didn’t like. Whatever it was, whether you initiated the change or not, you grew from the experience and that’s cause for celebration. •What risks did you take that you are most proud of? Perhaps you stepped out of the box and did things differently this year than what comes naturally to you. For example, you are an introvert and you chose to attend networking events to break out and meet new people. •In which areas of your career or life did you experience breakthroughs? Did you have a shift in perspective? Did you break through a mental, emotional, or physical boundary you previously held? Reflect on your breakthroughs and how you have evolved. •Who and what are you grateful for? These may be your friends,

•What do you wish to complete before the year ends? What’s left undone that needs to be wrapped up before the year is out? Prioritize what’s left and do what’s most important to you. Delete or delegate what you can. Most importantly, determine what action you will take. •What is the central theme for you? If this year is a chapter in the book of your life what title would you give it? Anytime is a great time to stop and take notice of all that is going on in your life and in your career. Reflection is the first step in planning for the future. Take the time to review the past and just how far you’ve come, then determine your goals and create a plan to get you from where you are right now to where you want to be. LinkedIn strategies you must use
Can LinkedIn really help you advance your career or get hired? Microsoft’s senior recruiting director told me: “HR, recruiters, and hiring managers constantly use Linkedin when seeking job candidates, so by all means you most definitely need to a have an effective profile on their site.” I’ve spoken to countless recruiters and other HR directors who agree. This site posts higher-end jobs with direct access to the hiring manager or the recruiter overseeing the search. Don’t assume this is the new “get hired quick” magic bullet. LinkedIn is proving to be a terrific tool to add to your job search arsenal, but just going online and signing up won’t produce any results. Here are 7 ways to get recruiters to find and call you.

Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY
Pause Investing for a Luxury? Dear Dave, Where should you save for large expenditures when you’re doing the Baby Steps?
Step 3. But until then, I want you to be hardcore about scrimping, saving and getting your financial house in order! —Dave
The Rebate Explanation
-Heath Dear Heath, Depending on what the expenditure is, I would suggest saving for these sorts of things after Baby Step 3. Once you’ve paid off all of your debts, except for your home, and built an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses, you reach a point where you can breathe a little bit. After all that hard work and sacrifice, you’re finally in a position to replace that ratty, old furniture or get a better car. The question then is this: How much do you want to temporarily cut back on investing in order to make this expenditure happen?
Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.

Dear Dave, How do cash-back rebates work on electronics and other items? Dan Dear Dan, I like this question. Most consumers don’t think about how the process works. They only care that it’s benefitting them from a financial standpoint. Let’s say you buy an item for $1,000, and you get a cash rebate for $100. Basically, you just paid $900 for that item, right? So, what the companies are trying to do is incentivize certain retailers to buy a particular product or amount of that product, yet sort of protect the sticker price in the minds of the consumers. To me, it’s really a little ridiculous. Why not simply take off the money, and price it at $900?
Personally, I’d like to see you allocate a fixed percentage of your income toward play money and still be able to put 15 percent of what you make into retirement. If you want to slow down a bit on Baby Step 5, which is paying off the house, in order to take a once-in-a- That keeps retailers from jerking around lifetime vacation, I’m cool with that. But with the margins. It purifies the process a I don’t like the idea of slowing down on little bit, but it adds to the hassle. funding your retirement. Good question, Dan! The basic idea here is to always handle your money with planning, purpose and maturity. You’ve got a little room to play —Dave back and forth once you get past Baby
