Learning & Living Dear Dave, I’m a recently retired widow, and my husband always took care of most of our finances. We never had any debt, but after starting to learn a little bit about how money works, I’m worried that there may be too much of it invested in CDs (certificates of deposit). The total nest egg is a little over $1.5 million, with $300,000 of that in CDs. There’s also a $317,000 annuity, a 403(b) and around $900,000 in IRA mutual funds. I also have two homes and a new car that are paid for. How do you think I should handle things going forward?
Joan Dear Joan, I’m really sorry to hear about your husband, but you two did a fantastic job with your finances. You’re worth at least $1.5 million, and you have no debt. You’re set for life, but you’re wise to want to be careful. The CDs give you some stability, but obviously they’re not earning much of anything. I think of them as money kicked up in a hammock — it’s not working for you. You both worked hard for that money, so personally I’d like to see it working hard for you now. If you’ve had good luck with a variable annuity, that’s fine. You’ve also had very good luck with your mutual fund investing. So, with all this money in different areas, you’re definitely diversified. It’s just a matter of wrapping your arms around it all and developing a deeper understanding of things going forward. At this point, I would urge you to find an investment professional in your area with the heart of a teacher — someone who’s not trying to sell you stuff. You want to learn, Joan, and I’m really impressed by that. It’s a smart and necessary thing. Every time you see an investment person, whoever it may be, your goal should be to leave the room smarter and with more

Dear Brandon, In your situation, a $22,000 car is not unreasonable at all. You guys are both 31 years old, and you’re going to be in great shape for retirement if you just keep doing what you’ve been doing. On top of all that, you’ve got your emergency fund in place, in addition to a nest egg and car savings. If I’m in your shoes, I’d go out and find the best car $22,000 can buy. You’re doing all the right stuff. Your kids can go to school debt-free, and you’re going to have the house paid off in no time. In short, you’re going to retire multi-millionaires at the rate you’re going — as long as you keep on keeping on! Think about this, too. As a general trend, most people’s incomes go up throughout their lifetimes. That being the case, chances are you’re going to make and invest even more money in the years ahead. You and your wife could easily retire with $5 million to $10 million sitting there. You’ve done a great job together, Brandon. Keep up the good work,

hether you are a prospective IT Recruiter or an IT Professional in search of a new position or contract, making great connections and first impressions are always the greatest goals. Even within the same company, Human Resource departments are going to look for a completely different skillset from those they bring on as contract or permanent recruiters than those they are looking to hire as IT staff. In the meanwhile, it is important for both types of candidates to know what to do, and what not to do, to land the job.
RECRUITERS The prospect of success as a recruiter, whether salaried or contracted, depends on your ability to not only sell yourself, but to be able to sell candidates on the corporation. In a highly competitive market with ever-changing technology, you have to strive and have the work ethic to remain educated and engaged. When interviewing with HR, there are several important guidelines for landing the job or the contract. Do Your Homework: Before you approach an interview, or a meeting to offer recruitment services, research the company. Are they in need of someone to staff just their IT department, as a healthcare organization or large University, and perhaps you might be expected to branch your services into healthcare or education staffing? Or are they a tech company constantly looking for new talent for IT or coding? Knowing the answers to the questions prior to going in will allow you to keep your cool and stay engaged. Listen: If you go into discussions with a company ready to burst open with a list of your experience and accolades, you may be making a mistake. Confidence is, indeed, king. At the same time, willingness to learn and genuine interest in the company is going

to bring you even further. Resist the urge to tune them out when they wax about the company’s details. Ask questions, and then ask follow-up questions to show you are listening and understand their needs. Sell: Explain how you source candidates, your previous successes, and your use of technology. Showing that you are the master of both face to face communications, have social media and professional networking skills, and have a very professional work ethic is all part of selling yourself. You have to sell your personality, ability to be a self-starter, and knowledge of industry jargon the same way that you would sell a candidate to the company or the company to a candidate.
IT PROFESSIONALS You may have been contacted by a recruiter, approached a staffing company, or sent your resume to the company at which you wish to work. In any case, if you have landed that all-important interview for the dream job, be sure to brush up on your interpersonal and interview skills before going to shine. Research: Be sure that you are qualified for the position, and learn about the company as well. Whether you are going into the tech industry, or another industry in need of IT support, it is best to know as much as you can to be prepared. Showing up unprepared looks like lack of interest to the interviewer! Ask questions even if you have done your research and know the answers. Minimize Unemployment Periods: Hopefully you have taken a few freelance gigs or classes if you were unemployed. Any time passing between places of employment that wasn’t filled with education, freelance work, or other self-improvement will be something where you will have to give an account. Do not go unprepared without an explanation for any lost time. Have extra copies of your resume or CV on hand. Don’t Let Them Shake You: Sometimes when interviewing for a prestigious company, the recruiter will ask some unexpected questions just to see your reaction. Go with the flow, smile, and regroup. Even when nervous, try to stay cool. Keep focused, don’t ramble! Show that you are confident in your skills, certifications, and experience. Dress for Success: Do not show up under-dressed. Professional attire, no matter the company dress policy, is needed at the interview.

Because qualifications between applicants are bound to be similar, potential employers are often happy to see experiences outside of engineering. But keep these experiences only if they can prove relevant skills such as leadership, organization and high attention to detail
By Gail Fero Writing CVs (resumes) can be difficult for more technically minded people but especially for engineers, because while technical abilities are important, so are the transferable skills which can sometimes be harder to come by. For an engineering CV, there are a series of abilities that you’ll want to demonstrate. Your knowledge, flexibility, teamwork skills as well as leadership skills are all important, as is your ability to prioritize. So as you’re preparing your CV, keep these things in mind when you’re writing about past projects and the skills you’ve gained and the technologies you’ve used. For an engineering CV (resume), the layout does not have to be chronological as it should be with most CVs. Instead, what is most important is that it is well organized to best display your pertinent skills and to highlight specific experience. Because engineering is a technical industry, a skills section allows a potential employer to immediately locate the most important information in terms of your experience, abilities and training. This is also important if you have worked on multiple short-term contracts. Too many can weigh down a CV, and because engineering is largely project-based, you need to give only the most important details and focus on highlighting your contribution to each project. Try to be succinct, because a skill section should be clear at a glance. However, if you’ve worked in a series of permanent roles, a chronological CV might be the best layout for you so think about your past positions and the job you’re applying for before deciding on your layout. While every CV should be tailored, in a technical CV like engineering, it is even more important. The job you apply for affects the layout you’ll want to use and even your chosen vocabulary. Focus solely on the job description that you’re applying for. Match words in your CV to words the company uses in their adverVOL. 21 ISSUE 1051 tisement, specifically the action words
and industry buzz words. This will help bring your CV to the forefront and grab a potential employer’s attention. Keep the skills you highlight relevant to the job description and cut out anything superfluous. Some of the aspects of a normal CV aren’t suggested for an engineering CV. Instead of using an objective, include a qualifications summary to bring attention to your training and credentials. And in your project achievements, make sure to add in measurable, successful outcomes. Quantify what you’ve added to projects, what success you’ve had and technologies you’ve worked with. This can bring a bit of weight to your CV and show a high level of attention to detail, something necessary in an engineering CV. Engineering is a competitive industry and most of the people applying for the same jobs will have the same qualifications and training. Like any CV, the job of your engineering CV is to sell yourself. Don’t just list your technical skills but also quantify your results and your successes. Tell them what you’ve accomplished and why you’re the best candidate. Keep your resume positive, showing your enthusiasm for the role you’re applying for. Let them know how you’ll contribute by demonstrating how you’ve completed similar

The layout, which is fairly standardized in a normal resume, works differently for engineers because of the nature of engineering roles. Tailoring, always advised, is even more important. However the biggest difficulty that engineers have in writing a CV is knowing what needs to be included and what needs to be left out. You only have a short amount of time to sell yourself which makes precision all the more important. But remember, your CV isn’t there to get you the job, it’s there to get you an interview, and it will be up to you to land the job. AUGUST 5, 2016

In the late 1980’s, you could drive through Cypress and see silos, cows, horses, goats, and lots of farms. Everything changed in the early 1990’s when developers constructed several master-planned communities. Those communities have been joined by others with the result that three zip codes: 77429, 77410, and 77433 became one of the biggest suburban communities in Houston area. In fact, the population is widely thought to be about 800,000 although estimates as low as 130,000 can be found.

Cy-Fair High School
The area became known as Cy-Fair in the 1930’s when Big Cypress School and Fairbanks High School formed the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District. The current enrollment at Cy-Fair ISD is 113,689. With 12 high schools, 18 middle schools, 54 elementary schools and 4 alternative schools, Cy-Fair ISD is the third largest school district after Houston and Dallas in the State of Texas and is actually one of the fastest growing school districts in the US. Cy-Fair has more than 14,000 employees and is a huge economic impact on the Cypress area. Lone Star College has three locations to serve this huge area. The Lone Star College Fairbanks Center is on 290, Lone Star College Cypress Center is on Clay Road, and Lone Star College CyFair occupies 200 acres on Barker Cypress Road. The Barker Cypress location has been developed as an environmentally friendly campus that has been restored to native grasses, native trees and wetlands. There has been a huge resurgence in the animals like beaver and deer as well as thousands of migratory birds there. Most of the campus buildings face the beautiful lake system that is the result of capturing storm water runoff and used for campus irrigation. With more than 95,000 students, LSC contributes about $3.1 billion to the local economy. LSCS employs more than 6,000 employees, and payroll amounts to more than $206 million. That payroll is primarily spent in the surrounding area to purchase groceries, clothing and other household goods and services. In addition, LSCS buys goods and services to the tune of more than $193 million per year to support its operations.

Cypress is developing into a major hub of the Houston medical community. The largest hospital in the Cypress area will be the 275 bed, Memorial Hermann campus that is to be completed by 2017. The Memorial Hermann group purchased 32 acres of the last remaining frontage land on 290. There are currently two major hospitals in the Cypress area, North Cypress Medical Center and Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital.
