Festival along the Railway 8–30 June THIS SUMMER it is once more time
for the Inlandsbanan Festival which for the third year running is being organised by the cultural association Kulturföreningen Inlandskult from Arvidsjaur headed by Johan Piribauer. It is a travelling cultural and music festival, where artistes join the rail coaches and there are events at different places along the railway line during June. In previous years, there have been five musical evenings, but this year the association expects there to be even more. Johan’s hope and dream is to arrange performances in every municipality along Inlandsbanan. He has been an Inlandsbanan travel enthusiast since his childhood. “From as early as I can remember, we used to take the rail coach from Arvidsjaur to see grandma in Tjappsåive,” he says. When Johan was 11 he asked for just one thing for Christmas: ten tickets for journeys between Arvidsjaur and Jokkmokk. “I spent the whole spring on rail coaches,” he adds. Johan Piribauer is a musician himself and tours in Sweden and abroad, either solo or with a band. In the past he has played at stations in Arvidsjaur and Moskosel. “I believe that there have been more than 1,000 concerts for passengers on Inlandsbanan since 1994,” he adds. Read more about the festival at www.inlandsbanefestival.se.

Part of Swedish History DURING THE 19TH CENTURY English companies began to express an interest in setting up and running railway lines in Sweden. In the 1850s, the Swedish state therefore decided to establish a state-owned railway network to control the expansion of railways. Inlandsbanan was the last large state railway construction project in Sweden. Work on the railway began over 100 years ago in 1907. The project was completed in 1936 when the last nails were hammered into the track at Kåbdalis. We will stop if there is time to look at the commemorative stone and to think about all the navvies who sweated over the construction of Inlandsbanan.
INLANDSBANAN TIMELINE 1894 The idea of a western north-south railway link in Norrland was raised by Axel Rappe, the chief of the general staff. He wanted to create a transport route from the Swedish interior to Norrbotten that could be an alternative to the more vulnerable line near the coast. 1897 Parliament discussed the idea of a railway link in inland Norrland for the first time. 1907 Idea of a railway link from Lake Vänern in the south to Norrbotten in the north begins to take shape. Parliament decides to build the first section. Autumn 1907, work begins on the first section: the 125-km Östersund–Ulriksfors link. 1911 Work begins on the next stage between Ulriksfors and Volgsjön – or Vilhelmina as it is known today. Trains begin operating on the first section of the railway line between Östersund and Häggenås on October 10th. 1912 The go-ahead is given for the Sveg–Brunflo section. 1917 The decision is taken to build the Vilhelmina–Gällivare stretch.
1916–1918 The state buys the private railways between Sveg and Lake Vänern, thus creating the Kristinehamn– Gällivare section of the railway. 1937 After 30-years’ construction, Inlandsbanan is declared open on 6th August with a large celebration in Kåbdalis (between Arvidsjaur and Jokkmokk), where the rails from the northern and southern sections met. The line was officially opened by Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf. The total cost of construction was SEK 136 million, including SEK 26 million for buying the private railway lines. 1939 Outbreak of Second World War. Sweden mobilises and Inlandsbanan is used to transport Swedish conscripts. Between 1940 and 1943 German soldiers are transported between Trondheim and Narvik via Östersund, Arvidsjaur and Gällivare. 1950–1970s Following the end of the Second World War large sections of the Swedish railway network (including Inlandsbanan) have problems with profitability. The first
closures along the railway line begin. In 1966 the secondary track between Sveg and Hede is closed. In 1969 passenger services come to an end on the Mora–Lesjöfors section. Almost 25% of the Swedish railway network is closed. 1990–1991 The Social Democratic government proposes a savings programme that would mean ending passenger services on Inlandsbanan and running replacement bus services. High profile protests from individuals, associations, municipalities and county governors forces the newly elected non-Socialist coalition to review the future of Inlandsbanan. 1992 A proposal for the “new Inlandsbanan” is put forward; parliament decides that the railway line should remain in state ownership and that the company Inlandsbanan AB (IBAB), set up by the 15 municipalities from Mora to Gällivare, should have the right to use the railway. 2003 A separate company is set up for tourist services. It is called Turism AB, but later changes its name to Grand Nordic. The municipalities of Kristinehamn, Vansbro, Storfors and Filipstad become shareholders in the company.
Travelling with Children INCREASING NUMBERS of
families with children are beginning to appreciate the joys of travelling on Inlandsbanan. One reason is the freedom it gives families. You can stop off when you want to enjoy fun activities together. There is lots to choose from, so everyone in the family will gain something from the journey. Experiences range from going on inspection trolleys, shooting the rapids, visiting elk farms and reindeer centres, to meeting a Sami family, feeding reindeer and maybe sleeping under reindeer skins in a traditional Sami tent. Nature is also full of magnificent experiences that cost nothing, such as sleeping in tents, hiking and, in some places, fishing. You can feel free to move around during the journey and it is actually quite OK “to have ants in your pants”. There is always something happening on the train, there are stops for food and drink and stops to look at interesting sights along the way. If you are lucky you might be able to meet the engine driver when the train is stationary. Families particularly appreciate the fact that two children under the age of 16 travel free with each fare-paying adult.

Where truth and legends become living history People come here from all over the world – either to confirm their view of Sami culture or to gain fresh insights. They are interested, eager to learn and well read. Above all they have one thing in common – they appreciate taking a break from everyday life. At the Båtsuoj Sami Centre you can discover knowledge, old traditions and real-life reindeer.
L
otta Svensson has looked closely at her Sami heritage and created an experience for the international market capturing the heart and soul of Sami life. This is the simplest way of describing the authenticity of the experience. According to Lotta, many visitors from afar bring along their preconceptions of the Sami people – they are wonderful preconceptions of a people dressed in national costumes with reindeer. She wanted to add practical information to this picture: information about how Samis live today and about how they used to live. Place for knowledge Båtsuoj is built at her parents’ home and is a reconstruction of a settlement including all buildings. Together with her family, she runs the Sami village and sometimes they take on extra staff. Her husband keeps reindeer and so part of the practical experience is based around reindeer husbandry, the reindeer as individuals and their influence on the Sami culture.
“It is important for us to communicate meaningful knowledge. Everything we do is built around documented facts and research about Sami culture and history. We are working with researchers at the Silver Museum in Arjeplog to develop the Sami village by adding new and interesting sections. It seemed obvious that we should approach this in a professional manner backed by research. One example of an interesting fact we have come across in research reports is that Samis used to toast inner tree bark, which is high in selenium and minerals, to eat. This was not because of famine, but formed a normal part of the diet and was eaten with reindeer milk in much the same way as cornflakes are eaten today,” said Lotta. Currently there are plans with the Silver Museum to recreate a sacrificial site on the other side of the lake to show how such a site would have looked. Naturally, Shamanism, a Pagan religion, played a role in this.
Spirituality Shamanism was practised until the end of the 16th century after which Christianity became ever more dominant up until the 20th century. It has been claimed that Samis had no religion of their own. However, Sami folk beliefs have survived in many different ways. Death, the living, spirits and the spiritual are central to these beliefs. Respect for and being able to read nature are also important; this includes knowledge of herbs used for healing. The degree to which people are aware of these things on a day-to-day basis varies from family to family. Some people do not want to know about such things, while for others they form an important part of daily life. Lotta herself is interested in herbal medicine and has been learning about the subject all her life. She believes in the existence of both theoretical and subconscious intelligence. “My intelligence is subconscious”, she says. “Some roles often inspire confidence in others and today’s wise7
Wilderness chef of the year 2008 The prestigious competition to find this year’s wilderness chef took place for the fourth year with the award going to the chefs Maria Lekberg and Ulf Johansson from the hostel STF Ammarnäs in southern Lapland. The competitors have to prepare food in challenging conditions such as cold, over an open fire or with limits on the ingredients that can be brought along. The competition is organised by the green tourism association Ekoturismförening and AB Måltidsupplevelser in Grythyttan. Judges included Carl Jan Granqvist, who explained that the judges were looking for professional, accomplished cooking with a clear, well presented and accessible concept reflecting the local area. Granqvist added that Ulf and Mia are highly skilled chefs, they worked well together, were well organised and maintained high standards of food hygiene. They considered both the internal and external wellbeing of their guests, producing dishes that were both suitable for the occasion and based around local ingredients. The food was then served along with good stories.
men and women are people to whom others feel able go with their worries. Often it is a case of listening to your body so it can tell you what it needs. Today people feel more able to contemplate and talk about their feelings.” To retain and renew The idea of taking Sami culture forward to the future seems to have been successful. In the 14 years since Båtsuoj was set up visitor numbers have increased steadily from 500 to around 5,000 a year. Lotta thinks that it is important to display all aspects of Sami culture. It is not just about reindeer, but also 8
about the language, handicrafts and the belief system. Each element is an important part of the complete picture. “Many of our visitors return year after year, and others come because they have heard about us from former guests. At the same time as we are trying to preserve and explain our history we are also working continuously to develop and to renew ourselves,” Lotta concludes.

Eco-tourism is growing – Nature’s Best leads the way
Ola inside a reindeer pen in Vinklumpen, from the book “När dom andra sover”. The picture on the front cover of Up North is also taken from this book.
“När dom andra sover” published by Gullers Förlag The photographer Christer Olofsson was not satisfied with taking a few snapshots during reindeer sorting. He wanted a little more – much more in fact. In the eight years from 1999 to 2007 he was a regular visitor to the Sami village of Jijnjevaerie in Jämtland, where he followed the everyday life of the reindeer-herding Sparrock family. He has got to know the village people and captured individual moments as well as their life stories in words and pictures. A beautifully produced book that uses quotations and unposed photographs to give the reader an insight into the thoughts, dreams and reality of people’s lives. In the book we gain a glimpse of the hard work that must be done whatever the weather and season. In good years and in bad, such as when almost all the reindeer perished during the difficult winters of the 1940s and when the Spanish flu hit Jijnjevaerie in 1914, or when disaster struck reactor 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in Ukraine producing a radioactive cloud that hovered over Sweden a few days later. Alongside reverses, authorities’ actions and prejudices, the book shows modern life in a Sami village that radiates a love of life and of nature. Or as Nils Mikael says, “I have never been able to imagine myself in any other job. This is something quite special. You are your own boss. You’ll never be rich, but maybe you will be rich in something other than money.”
Nature’s Best is a certification programme promoting responsible tourism for those offering holiday experiences in the Swedish countryside and wilderness. Many of Sweden’s leading companies offering nature holidays and experiences can be found here. The certification guarantees the high quality of the travel experience, as well as active responsibility regarding environmental protection, a use of more environmentallyfriendly transport and respect for the residents and cultural heritage of the areas visited. The aim is to improve eco-tourism in Sweden and to increase the number of quality-assured, environmentally-aware nature holidays available. Protecting nature and culture should provide work and income for more people, as the attraction of these holidays is the unspoilt nature of the area. The programme will also raise Sweden’s international profile as exciting eco-tourism destination. There are currently three organisations behind the certification programme: the Swedish eco-tourism association Ekoturismföreningen, the nature association Naturskyddsföreningen and the tourism body Visit Sweden. www.naturensbasta.se www.ekoturism.org www.naturskyddsforeningen.se www.visitsweden.com

here are 16,000km² of glorious Gällivare which are well worth exploring whether this is your first, second or 100th trip. You can experience the light of the Midnight Sun, the scent of warm cloudberries and the sound of fish leaping in the water. Gällivare has everything from forests and marshes to mountains, both high and low. Our crystal clear waters offer opportunities for relaxing fishing or refreshing swimming. Come and be enchanted.
T
Multi-cultural with a rich history GÄLLIVARE IS A MEETING PLACE for three cultures: Sami, settler and mining. You will hear Swedish, Sami and Finnish spoken around you. The easiest way to find out about the area’s multi-culturalism is with a visit to the Gällivare Museum in the old school building Centralskolan in the centre of town. The same building also houses the Mosquito Museum, a pleasant museum shop and lovely café. If you want to find out more then you can hire a knowledgeable guide. You will find the tourist information office in the same building. Go and see what Gällivare has to offer in terms of activities and walks.

Experience nature
Castles, mines and national parks THE CASTLE FJÄLLNÄS can be found by the river Vassara. The castle, which was built in the 19th century for a mine owner, is now a fabulous apartment hotel and restaurant. Make a reservation at the castle’s amazing restaurant for an unforgettable dining experience. Those of you aged 12 and over have an opportunity to visit a working mine. There are guided tours available of both the LKAB underground mine and AITIK’s open-cast mine. If you have a little more time then you should visit the Laponia World Heritage Site with its marshes, thick pine forests and imposing mountains. Laponia includes four national parks and two nature reserves. The area is protected because of its nature and its Sami reindeer husbandry.
THE MOUNTAIN DUNDRET, which at 823m is the highest lowland mountain in Sweden, is just 4km from the town centre. You can hike there or take a return trip on the Midnight Sun bus for coffee at the summit. Midnight Sun has its peak around 12 July. Fishing is always close by. Buy a fishing permit, hire some equipment, cast off and wait for an old pike or char to bite. Several fishing waters have barbecue areas for you to cook your catch. If you want to swim then a walk upstream along the river Vassara brings you to the Sandviken bathing area. A little further away the lake Abbortjärn has a small beach with a jetty and icecold water. There are also lots of activities on offer from local companies.

he Stora Sjöfallet Mountain Centre is situated in the second-oldest national park in the world and Lapland’s world heritage site Laponia. We see hardly any of the mosquitoes of which people are so afraid, and receive even fewer bites. There is often a light breeze around the mountain centre. In May, as the mountain streams begin to thaw, capercaillie begin their mating rituals under the gaze of snowtopped mountains. Porjus has a large power station as well as a lovely hotel. Stora Sjöfallet and Hotel Porjus are two places well worth visiting during your journey along Inlandsbanan.
Sjöfallet - balm for the soul EXPERIENCES, REST AND RECREATION.
Stora Sjöfallet has something for everyone for most of the year. From mid-February until early October you can follow nature’s changing seasons and enjoy the opportunities offered for fun and recreation, whilst still being close to civilisation. Early in the morning you can set off for a short walk in the mountains. Stop off and rest. Lie on your back and watch the eagles soaring above you in the sky or maybe try casting off and catching a fish for your lunch – these experiences are about quality and offer nourishment for the soul. “Lapland’s larder” is a near inexhaustible source of inspiration for those interested in food – whether they are eating or cooking. Cold-smoked char pan fried and served with whitefish roe sauce and boiled potatoes. Game gratin with elk and reindeer meat, morel soup, marinated whitefish, the list is almost endless.

Canoeing under the light of the Midnight Sun is ambrosia for the soul. If you want a little more speed and excitement, then try go-karting in Vuollerim. Laponia has been recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1996 because of its natural and cultural importance for all mankind. Laponia includes the Sarek, Padjelanta and Muddus national parks as well as several nature reserves. We wish you a warm welcome.
Ájtte Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum THE MUSEUM IS JUST five minutes’ walk from Inlandsbanan. You can find out about life and survival in Sápmi – the Samis’ land of marshes, forests and mountains. Ájtte is of interest to visitors both large and small and there is something for everyone. Exhibitions cover themes such as clothing, silver, religion, myths and life in a world without roads. Activities for all the family YOU DON’T NEED to do everything all at once. Maybe Mum will want to try her hand at fishing, while Dad wants to go canoeing and the children would like to go swimming in a heated pool. This is not a problem as there are lots of fun activities to try independently or with a knowledgeable guide. Shooting the rapids on the Pite or Pärl rivers, riding, walking along the new Kvarnsbäck trail and visiting the husky kennels are just a few of the summer activities on offer. The tourist information office can offer advice and recommendations to help you can get the most from your stay.
Art and handicrafts skilled craft artisans, photographers and artists in Jokkmokk. Some discovered this ideal location by chance, while others were born and grew up here. Some welcome visitors to studios in their own homes and there are also several handicrafts studios/shops to visit. Do not miss Polcirkelsten, Jokkmokks Tenn and Gamla Apoteket. Sámi Duodji both exhibits and sells traditional and modern Sami handicrafts. The staff are highly knowledgeable about Sami crafts.

“It is important that we wake up and that we have the knowledge required to help the environment.” He is called northern Sweden’s Al Gore, even though he began publicising climate change issues before the release of Al Gore’s film “An Inconvenient Truth”. Andreas Gyllenhammar has roots in the Jämtland soil and his interest in nature has grown over the years. He studied civil engineering specialising in environmental and water issues and then completed a doctorate in environmental analysis. Today he is a researcher who travels around the county and country lecturing on environmental matters in way that makes us believe that thinking green is both important and fun. ccording to the old saying, the apple does not fall far from the tree. Andreas’ father was a well-known meteorologist and radio personality and therefore it was not just chance that led Andreas to devote a large part of his life to studying water
A 16
systems and climate change – and to sharing his knowledge with others. His doctoral thesis in 2004 was about environmental analysis and he has been involved in several research projects, including work in Botswana and Uganda. After working as an environmental
supervisor focussing on acid deposition at the county administrative board, Andreas now spends half his time working in environmental analysis and education for the technical consultancy Sweco, whilst at the same time being a researcher at SLU, the Swedish Univer-
sity of Agricultural Sciences. He knows what he is talking about when he says that we stand on the verge of major climate change. Opinion differs as to whether we have already reached the tipping point or whether we are still 20 years from that stage. The tipping point is reached once the processes responsible for the greenhouse effect gain their own momentum and continue regardless of human intervention. Cold seas absorb carbon dioxide, while warm seas release the gas. As the temperature rises in swamps, for example, more methane is released thus increasing the greenhouse effect. It is happening close to home The media tell us about ice melting in the Arctic Circle and about how polar bears are finding it increasingly difficult to survive. It is well known that sea levels will rise and that the government of the Maldives is in discussions with India and Sri Lanka to buy new territory. “People living at our level of latitude have difficulty seeing the urgency of the situation,” says Andreas. These things are happening too far away. However, obviously climate change will affect Sweden. Winter temperatures are expected to increase by 5 to 6 degrees Celsius over the next 70 to 80 years. Vegetation will start to appear on previously bare mountains and the tree line will move upwards by about 2 metres a year. The number of wintry days with thick snow on the ground will be halved and the growing season will be extended by two months. The ice on Lake Storsjön, the fifthlargest lake in Sweden, has been measured every winter since 1870. During that period, the average length of time the lake has been frozen each year has been around 150 days, with variations from year to year. In 2007, the lake was frozen for just 100 days. The lake is in-
dicative of the mountain climate in the area and statistics show clearly discernible changes over the last 30 years. The number of days the lake is frozen is now declining twice as quickly as in the years up to the 1970s. This influences all living things. Some processes in aquatic environments are controlled by light and others by the climate. When one factor alone changes then the ecological balance is disrupted. Researchers do not yet know what the full effect of this disruption will be. Positive action The outlook can seem bleak, but consumers can do a lot to help. “People can make a positive impact, just by becoming more aware and by considering environmental factors. People should not think that it is too difficult, but should begin to take steps that will make a difference. It is important that we wake up and that we have the knowledge required to help the environment.” Helping the environment can mean anything from monitoring electricity consumption, choosing green electricity and buying energy-saving light bulbs to insulating our homes. Those who live in houses have more scope for change than those who live in flats. Solar panels and roof-mounted wind turbines can be fitted for example. “These are simple measures for those who enjoy DIY and have the necessary skills,” Andreas adds. Most people are aware that the car is a villain in the environmental world and realise that car sharing, public transport and trains are good alternatives. The electric car is also gaining popularity and Andreas expects such cars to taken up by the general population in the next two years. The third way that we can have an influence is by what we eat. But how can consumers
know what is good for the environment? We often do not know and this is an area where we need more information and better labelling in shops. Hope for the future Andreas stresses that we must adapt to the changes and see the opportunities they represent rather than just focussing on halting climate change. To concentrate all our resources on limiting emissions without looking at how climate change will affect us is not a far-sighted plan. We could risk paying a higher price for the damage than if we also consider how to adapt to the new conditions. Climate change could bring opportunities. The Swedish interior will gain a more attractive climate, warmer and a little more humid. Many of those who currently take holidays around the Mediterranean may begin to find the region’s climate too hot and dry. Strangely, Sweden could become a beneficiary in this scenario, according to Andreas. Top tip from Andreas Enjoy nature – if we can appreciate the wonder of spending time in untamed countryside, then we will work harder to preserve it.

elcome to Vilhelmina! The area has much to offer those in search of authentic experiences of culture and nature. Go on a journey of discovery in the charming church town area with its small shops and cafes. You could also go swimming, bowling or head off on a short excursion to some of the finest places in the mountain world. You can find some good recommendations and help with car hire and bus timetables at the tourist information office.
Super excursions
Magical places is well worth a visit. This quaint area of town, dating from 1792, with old timber church cottages is in the centre of town by the church. The area was originally used by people coming to town from country villages for church festivals. Today the 27 remaining cottages are used as shops, Sami galleries and accommodation. Further to the north, you will find Fatmomakke, the old Sami place of worship, which is now a unique area with around 80 Sami cot tents and 20 wooden church cottages on the shores of Lake Kultsjön. This location has been a Sami meeting place since the end of the 18th century and is still in use today. The church is open during the summer months. There is also a popular cultural display.
VILHELMINA CHURCH TOWN
THE MOUNTAINS ARE FULL of beautiful and interesting places to visit. So make sure you find the time for some excursions into the wild. Places that we can especially recommend include: the Trappstegsforsen waterfall – a stepped waterfall where the waters of Lake Kultsjön run out into Djupselet. Photographs of the waterfall are highly valued by guests when they return home. Ricklundgården in Saxnäs is an interesting artist’s villa built in the 1940s. For those who enjoy hiking, Marsfjället, at 1,589 metres above sea level the highest point in Vilhelmina, is nearby. There are hiking trails from Fatomakke and Marsliden. There is also a great mountain hike that takes you to Klitvallen between Dikanäs, Matsdal and Grönfjäll. There are fairy-tale trails for families in Dikanäs and Kittelfjäll. Remains from between 4000 and 2000 BC have been found near the outflow for the river Gråtanån. Dikanäs is also where you can find Sweden’s northernmost motorcycle museum, which is well worth a visit.
A centre with a rich heritage IN VILHELMINA ,
the Folkets Hus centre has fun activities for all ages, including a cinema, swimming pool, bowling alley and library. The library also has a unique Sami section and internet access. Vilhelmina’s local museum is in the parish hall in the church town district. The museum has the Maksjöfyndet burial find from the 8th century and a ski from the 4th century. The centre of the town has a good range of restaurants, snack bars and shops.

trömsund is the second-largest population centre in Jämtland and is situated 100km north of Östersund and only 5km from the Ulriksfors stop. Rivers and streams rush down from the mountains through gentle valleys with fairytale forests and through lush agricultural villages. The area gained fame throughout Sweden as a result of Beppe Wolgers’ film Dunderklumpen. During your journey on Inlandsbanan you pass through the centre of Hoting, but you should make the time to visit other areas such as Hammerdal, Gäddede, Backe and Rossön as well.
The Beppe Museum is at Öhn, 8km north-west of Strömsund. Beppe Wolgers’ daughter has set up exhibitions about his painting, writings, TV and radio work, children’s books, films and much more. Children can dress up, paint figures from the film Dunderklumpen and meet Beppe’s dolls and see the animals on the farm. Music and literary events are arranged on evenings in the summer. Another highlight is the Hällingsåfallet waterfall, 20km to the south of Gäddede, which has an impressive 43m drop. The 800m-long canyon is the longest water-filled canyon in northern Europe. It has to be seen. It is easy to hire a car in Strömsund to visit these sights.
THE BEPPE MUSEUM
Vintage cars STOP OFF AT the motor museum, which has one of Europe’s foremost collections with around 100 vintage cars and some 40 motor bikes. You will find the hotel Hoting Unlimited here offering accommodation, spa facilities, activities and homemade food in a peaceful, inspirational setting. You will be welcomed by Britt-Marie and her staff. You can visit an exhibition about prehistoric Hoting – Hoting Forntid – at the campsite and children can try quad-biking. Don’t miss the Hoting craft fair which runs from 24th June–9th August.
A rich heritage of places to visit if you are interested in local culture. There are interesting exhibitions at the local museum Strömsunds Hembygdsgård as well as the six-metre tall Jorm Giant from Swedish children’s film Dunderklumpen. The manor house Olympiagården in Hammerdal has an 18th century museum with superb antiques. The village museum Lapplia Bygdemuseum, 5km west of Norråker, has the largest collection of old farming objects in the Norrland region. Cave paintings from four to five thousand years ago can be seen at Fångsjön, Brattforsen and Bofors. The Stone Age museum Rossöns Stenåldersmuseum has displays of stone-age exhibits.

World class history Time travel in Östersund Jamtli is an indoor and outdoor museum – 1 km from the city centre. The county museum has fascinating exhibitions, a shop, a café and in the outdoor area – a restaurant and a youth hostel. The large open-air museum includes farms and milieus from the end of the late 18th to mid-20th centuries. Jamtli’s most prized possession is the Överhogdal tapestry, a unique 1,000-year-old woven tapestry. A myriad of figures tell a puzzling story of the religion and mythology of the Viking Age. The tapestry is amazingly well preserved. Children can slide through the Storsjö Monster and into exciting exhibitions at the museum. Try one of Jamtli’s play facilities. Take your driving test at the 1956 driving school or try floating timber at the lake. Children can travel back in time in the open-air areas and adults can join the guided tour in English once a day. Meet people going about their everyday lives in 1785, 1895, 1942 and 1956.
Jamtli Shop is the place for a fusion between traditional handicrafts and modern design. You will find presents for yourself and for others. Jämtland handicrafts, sweets, books, postcards, toys and much, much more.

n Berg there is lots to do all year round with hunting and fishing, as well as other cultural and open-air pursuits. There is a delightful combination of genuine mountain villages with modern mountain facilities and an agricultural landscape around Lake Storsjön along with beautiful beaches. The best known tourist destinations include Ljungdalen, Gräftåvallen/Bydalen and Klövsjö. If you are interested in fishing you will certainly know about the Sölvbacka streams at Storsjö Kapell. Another little gem is Storhogna, which was named Sweden’s leading spa hotel in the World Travel Awards 2008.

IN SVENSTAVIK you can look forward to an experience that is really out of the ordinary. As well as enjoying good food and shopping you can have some really exciting experiences. How about go-karting on one of the best tracks in Sweden? Or exploring Sweden’s largest cleft cliff in Hoverberget within walking distance of the town centre. At the summit of the mountain you can take in the magnificent views whilst enjoying coffee and a snack. You now have the opportunity of trying new ways of searching for the Storsjö Monster. At the observation point in Svenstavik you can watch live footage of underwater activity in Lake Storsjön on TV monitors via a series of hi-tech underwater cameras. You could also visit the weapons smithy Bingstasmedjan, which is just one of the attractions in this land of the brain boxes.
village is a beautiful place to visit with a good range of accommodation and places to eat, a new roller rink, a beer and WC museum, as well as good service and a friendly atmosphere. The term “golden village” refers to the numerous international successes recorded by skiers from the Åsarna IK team since the 1970 world championships. Anna Olsson (née Dahlberg), Johan Olsson and Mats Larsson are the latest Olympic medallists. The Swedish skiing federation has ranked Åsarna IK as the best team in Sweden for several years. Obviously Åsarna offers excellent skiing in the winter along with dog-sledging and biathlon.
Hackås IN THE LOVELY VILLAGE of Hackås you can allow yourself to be enchanted by the magical music of the water sprites in the Billstaån River, or strike it rich at the Lillåkra trotting race track or just relax and enjoy the tranquillity of Hackås church, which dates from the 12th century. While you are near the church you should try to catch a glimpse of the Storsjö Monster, wander round the maritime museum or walk along the heritage trail. Try to make time to enjoy a meal at Strömbacka Kvarn, near the church, or to go for a swim as this is a great place to bathe.

“A man and his girlfriend were out fi shing in a boat behind the mountain Hoverberget when they caught sight of something about 20 metres away moving quickly towards the boat. As it came closer, they saw a hump and a log-like backbone suddenly appear out of the water. The skin looked hard and was a brownish-black colour. The creature bobbed up and down around the boat, which was 5-metres long. The boat was rocking violently. They estimated that the creature was about 15 metres long and afterwards they could see it all the way from Hoverberget to Hacksåssidan.” Reported in August 2006 by a public figure from the village who would therefore like to remain anonymous.

Observation Point Svenstavik – a new picture of the Storsjö Monster s the Storsjö Monster a myth or does it really exist? This is a question people have been asking themselves for centuries. The earliest recorded sighting of the monster was in 1635. Now it is possible to discover what is really hiding in the unexplored depths of Lake Storsjön. There has been an observation centre with hi-tech underwater cameras at Svenstavik, at the southern end of the lake, for about a year. From here you can follow events under the surface of the water, where all creatures that move or emit warmth are monitored and their images captured: images that caused a stir in the media everywhere from the USA, Canada and Brazil to India and Vietnam when they appeared on YouTube last summer. Monster fever has now taken over this small area. It all began when a member of Svenstavik’s business association had a memorable experience in Lake Storsjön. Like many others he saw “something” at close quarters. When one of the area’s other traders set up a security camera in his shop, the two began to wonder if it would be possible to put cameras into the lake. The idea was discussed by the business association and the plan took shape. A lease was taken on a small rocky islet out in the lake and cameras

were ordered from a Canadian company that normally supplies advanced security and surveillance systems. This Swedish order was something of a novelty for the Canadians and they issued their own press releases which attracted some media attention. Media Interest After last summer’s eye-catching film footage, when one of the cameras caught a serpent-like creature on film, the project took a new turn. The news attracted media attention from around the world. At the same time the traffic soared on the website storsjoodjuret.nu, which was overwhelmed, recording more than 100,000 single visits each day. In addition, the US TV company NBC expressed an interest in making a documentary in the area. According to Susanne Kindström, the project manager for Observation Point Svenstavik, the geology of Lake Storsjön is very interesting. “The lake resembles a mountain range with many peaks and deep valleys. The nearby mountain of Hoverberget has networks of caves that were only discovered recently, as well as lakes with depths of around 50 metres that have yet to be explored. There is so much waiting to be discovered if we have the will and the right resources.” She claims.
Research and Magic Together with others involved in the project, Susanne Kindström is working to develop the visitor centre using research and modern technology. They are looking into cooperation with the university Chalmers Tekniska Högskola and with researchers at the Kristinebergs Marine Research Station. “We see research, for example in the fields of underwater technology and interactive design, as one possible way of finding new and exciting ways to make science come to life,” she continued. The visitor centre is already unique. You can follow underwater events via TV screens and also learn about the Storsjö Monster through the ages, visit exhibitions and read eye-witness accounts of sightings dating all the way back to the 17th century. Obviously, if you want, you can also walk down to the shores of the lake to see the islet from where the cameras monitor everything that swims by. Nothing can go ashore onto the islet without being recorded either. So who knows what you might see? Maybe the solution to the riddle of the Storsjö Monster…
Kurt Jonsson, one of the leading lights in the business association at the visitor centre at Svenstavik. Just a stone’s throw away is Nysvehälla, where there are currently fi ve cameras: 3 on the islet and 2 in the water at a depth of about 10 metres. There is also what is known as a DOME camera monitoring the island. The cameras include an infrared camera which records images of heat and movement that may be of interest and sends them to the website www.storsjoodjuret.nu

Not to be missed most significant cultural treasures was discovered early in the last century in Överhogdal: five tapestries, the oldest of which dated back to the 9th century. We can recommend a visit to the museum Överhogdals Forngård created around replicas of the Överhogdal tapestries. The Mankell Cultural Centre in Sveg has an interesting and insightful exhibition about the life and work of local boy and world famous author Henning Mankell. One of Mankell’s most famous creations is the detective Kurt Wallander, recently portrayed by Kenneth Branagh in the BBC series. You can also join a tour visiting some of the places in Sveg mentioned in Mankell’s work. There are also themed exhibitions. Children will find their own paradise nearby on the fairytale island Lillön in Ljusnan. Make sure you visit the water park and pool complex. Sveg is also home to the world’s largest wooden bear that stands 13 metres tall and weighs 80 tonnes, a tribute to Härjedalen’s mascot.

If the weather is not suitable for this, then visit the exciting swimming pool complex in Sveg instead. Head off to the forest museum at Ängersjö which explains about the history of forestry from the 19th century to the present day. As an added bonus you can try the museum’s famous “kolbulle” – pork pancakes originally eaten by forestry workers. You could also take a day trip to Funäsdalen and see the mountain world at its best. You should take the time to visit the unique mountain plateau Flatruet and see the impressive mountain Helagsfjället with Sweden’s most southerly glacier and cave paintings at Ruändan, outside Messlingen. The mountain museum in Funäsdalen, which has exhibitions about the lives of Samis, mine workers and peasants in bygone days, is also worth visiting.

The time of witchcraft DURING A DARK period
in European history those thought to be witches were persecuted as a wave of hysteria swept across the continent. In the second half of the 17th century the persecution reached Sweden. The Swedish witch hunts began in Lillhärdal when 11-year old Gertrud was accused of walking on water and in turn accused her stepmother-to-be Stor-Märet of teaching her. Stor-Märet was imprisoned for several years before being burnt in 1672, despite maintaining her innocence of the charges. The witchcraft museum at Häxhuset in Lillhärdal has an interesting, frightening and thought-provoking exhibition about the time of witchcraft.

There are several events taking place this summer, including Älvdansen, various musical shows and markets in Skästra and Järvsö.
Hälsingegården farm, a cultural experience
Gammelgården in Fågelsjö DEEP INSIDE the Orsa wilderness lies the old farm Fågelsjö Gammelgård “Bortom Åa”. With its unique environment this is one of the area’s absolute highlights. When the owners built a new house on the farm in 1910, the old farm was left intact with all its fixtures and fittings. It also comprises a weapons smithy with all tools and equipment, plus a door with seven locks. You can hire bicycles and canoes here. The peaceful surroundings invite you to go for pleasant walks or a swim. At Hamra Vildmarkcenter you can book quad-bikes and guided tours in advance. If you want overnight accommodation, there are small cabins of a basic standard. Courses are also very popular during the summer, see www.fagelsjo.nu. There is a café in Amerikahuset at the farm, with fresh baked bread, coffee and food made to order.
CULTURE IN HÄLSINGLAND is mostly based on all the fine Hälsingland farms which can be found in the area, some of which can be seen on www.halsingegardar.org. Finnish immigration is also reflected in several areas, such as Orsa Finnmark. Here the old musical traditions can be found and several “Hälsingehambon” dance competitions take place during the summer. An enjoyable experience is Prästhelgen in Fågelsjö on 5th July, a tradition arising from the days when the priest came to the village once a year by rowing boat over the lake Fågelsjön. Craftsmen’s Day is another traditional activity well worth a visit, where many craftsmen exhibit and sell their products.
A journey through time in mining and forest history AT LOOS COBALT MINE you can enjoy an
interesting, unique mining environment from the 17th century. If you are interested in the importance of the forests through the ages, you should definitely visit Börningsbergets forestry museum, where you can see a traditional environment of forestry workers at the turn of the century and the early 20th century. For those who wish to taste outdoor life and the beautiful surrounding countryside, the Hamra national park is a must. These three places lie within a radius of 30 km of Fägelsjö station.

ora lies in the heart of Dalarna on the shores of the beautiful lake Siljan. Here old traditions meet new ideas in an exciting way. This historical ground was trodden by both Gustavus Vasa and Anders Zorn. The world-famous Dalahästen wooden horses are made just to the south of Mora. Even Father Christmas lives just outside Mora. The town is also known for the useful Mora knife and for being home to one of the leading manufacturers of water taps in the Nordic region.
Strong, famous symbols MORA AND THE OTHER VILLAGES around Siljan are well-known for preserving and continuing to use traditional costumes. The costume tradition is widespread and it is usual to wear one’s costume at graduations, midsummer festivals, weddings and other special occasions throughout the year. Another cultural icon is the classic Dalahästen wooden horse. These were made in various villages near Mora and are still made, more or less by hand, in Färnäs and Nusnäs just south of Mora.
A place with charm NOT FAR FROM MORA STATION stands the Vasaloppet museum, which shows the history of the Vasaloppet ski race and the other competitions during Vasaloppsweek. The centre of Mora has a large range of shops, cafes and restaurants. You will also find Zorn museum and Zorn farm, with exhibitions about the world famous artist’s home and many of his works. Weather permitting; you can enjoy a dip in Lake Siljan’s clear waters. Not far from the station, you will find Tingsnäsbadet, a lovely, large sandy beach, just a stone’s throw from the track and near ice cream and cafes.
The Zorn’s family home showing how husband and wife, Anders and Emma Zorn, lived. The house remains mainly untouched since Zorn’s time and is a fantastic example of cultural history. The Vasaloppet ski race’s finishing line is another famous site in Mora. About 45,000 skiers who participate in some of the Vasalopp week’s ski races, from Tjejvasan to the great Vasaloppet itself, glide over the finishing line under the motto “In the footsteps of our forefathers for the victories of tomorrow”.

IMAGES OF THE PROVINCE are dominated by the Bergslagsleden network of canals and natural waterways. Water has a special attraction for us and we are drawn to water for relaxation and recreation. The campsite Badsta Camping, which has its own stop on Inlandsbanan, is the obvious place to begin your exploration of Bergslagskanalen. Bergslagskanalen is one of the area’s best preserved links for transporting iron to Europe. The Bjurbäcken lock system, where a drop of 11km is negotiated via the three chambers and 3km of hand-dug canal, is one of our most popular visitor attractions.
“FILIPSTAD IS A SMALL TOWN, where the spirit of culture rules and where the smell of bread is a gourmet experience.” – These fine words were how Filipstad ambassador, author and inspiration Ewa Persson described “her” Filipstad. The municipality of Filipstad also has magnificent scenery and is an exciting meeting place for elves, trolls and the Värmland sense of fun. You can hear the tale of ironmaking and about life in a bygone age. The village farms and ironworks are open in the summer and invite you in to flea markets and musical evenings.

Questions often asked on the train on Inlandsbanan operate during the summer, we need to use drivers from other train companies who often work for us during their holidays. It might seem strange that they want to work during their time off, but many of our drivers return year after year – they think it is great fun and enjoy doing something a little bit different. In total we have around 20 engine drivers who come from all over Sweden, but who are based in Östersund for their period of service. Travelling on Inlandsbanan is different from a normal train journey. There is something happening all the time and you, the passenger, can pop in to see the driver once the train is stationary. Here are some of the most common questions that the driver is asked:
BECAUSE TOURIST SERVICES

Why can’t the train go all the way through to Kristinehamn? Some stretches of the railway have not carried trains since 1969 and so the tracks are not in good enough repair to withstand a train service. However, some of these stretches are suitable for inspection trolleys and you can travel south from Mora by inspection trolley if you wish. On the 220km between Kristinehamn and Mora around 180km can be travelled by inspection trolley.
What happens if the train break s down?
Luckily, this does not happen very often, but it would depend on whe and when the break-dow re n occurred. In most cas es the engine driver himself can sort out the problem with the help of technical advice from the workshop in Östers und and the train can then continue on its way In a few cases, a coach . is called so passenger s can continue their journey and the broken -down train is collected by another engine. However, we aim to avo id such occurrences. Sometimes, unfortunately, we need to cha nge carriages at short notice because of technical problems and this can mean that sea ting arrangements hav to be changed and ma e y not correspond to tho se booked.
