JOB INVOLVEMENT IS THE KEY TO MOTIVATING THE UNMOTIVATED
JOB INVOLVEMENT IS THE KEY TO MOTIVATING THE UNMOTIVATED The Ungrateful Dead Those who collect their paychecks, but work in a catatonic slumber are true martyrs to their jobs. They are the ungrateful dead. Every organization has them and they are costly. These workplace zombies may not be easy to recognize; they readily hide behind more productive workers. Someone who is doing a below average job doesn’t regularly jump up and down to draw personal attention. And you can’t really punish someone for being indifferent and detached because the problem may be a personality issue. Consequently, managers often just ignore them. They may discuss the employee behind closed doors with other managers, but rarely confront the offender. How do we recognize, motivate, or if necessary, terminate these creatures? Give them their say; let them ‘fess up to their indifference. If you give employees a chance to explain why they feel the way they do, you can help them sort out the effects of their negative attitudes on performance. Through this process, employees become more accountable. Many apathetic workers maintain the perspective that if a manager doesn’t care about them, why should they invest their energy in doing their best? Engaging employees’ thoughts, opinions and feelings about their work shows them that you do care. Studies show that over 70% of communication is non-verbal, so employees pick up on your operative non-verbal cues just as you pick up on theirs. They may think you just don’t like them and consequently assume an attitude of indifference towards you. Clear the air by engaging them. Get their input, involve and empower them in key projects that speak to their skills and interests. Create standards and expect employees to be accountable for their own results. Through coaching, you will be able to sort loyalties to know which of the ungrateful dead need to be terminated. This is a small part of the book “All work and no say” by Jody Urquhart.
