Several Tulsa tennis events appear as evidence that a boom in the sport is occurring. In June, two tournaments were wildly successful: the Tulsa World Open and USTA Segment II - Super 2, with 320 junior entrants. In July, Tulsa Tennis Club hosts its first Junior Clay Court Tournament, and in September, Philcrest will host the USTA Challenger of Oklahoma. September will also feature the 3rd Annual Bruce G. Weber Tennis Classic, at The University of Tulsa Case Tennis Center. These are all outstanding tennis events. However, with little publicity surrounding them, potential interest generated by the events is squandered. Oklahoma Tennis Magazine (OTM) aims to change the status quo by becoming the premier resource for tennis activity in Oklahoma by featuring intriguing stories and detailed event information from Tulsa and surrounding communities. Each issue spotlights local youth and adult players, tennis tips from local professionals, trends in tennis clothing, hot new equipment, health and fitness advice from area experts, guest columns relating funny, up-close tennis experiences, a complete listing of tournament, league, and school team results, and an in-depth tennis event calendar. What our readers think is important to us; comments and questions relevant to tennis are highly encouraged. Beginning with Vol. 1, Issue 2, remarks from readers will become a prominent part of the magazine. Please don’t be shy, send your questions, comments and notices of scheduled tennis events to: readercomments@ oktennismag.com. Strengthened by your support, Oklahoma Tennis Magazine plans to be a factor in the new tennis boom. Connecting local tennis players with other enthusiasts, promoting Tulsa area events, supporting local businesses - such as Designs by Landi (see pg. 12), and providing timely and relevant information are a few ways that Oklahoma Tennis Magazine intends to achieve this goal.

Love of the game and family helped Elizaveta Volotko and Sergey Avdeyev move across the globe.
Elizaveta Volotko. Born in Yalta Ukraine in 1983 Yalta is located near by the Black Sea. My family moved to Russia after I was born but I spent every summer back at the Black Sea. I started playing tennis when I was 14. That was little late to get serious, so I never dreamed about being a pro player. I was doing lots of different activities like dancing and modeling on top of tennis. After I finished school, I got chance to travel around the world. Traveling quickly became my favorite hobby. My mom and sister had immigrated to United States, so after I finished college at St. Petersburg University, I decided to come here and live in Oklahoma. I like the people here. They are all nice and friendly. l

Sergey Avdeyev Born in Russia in 1987 I start playing tennis when I was 1 year old. My father was a tennis coach, and he always took me with him to the court. When I was thirteen I began to get serious about playing tennis. I devoted my life to the game. I went to Moscow to train when I was fifteen. I wanted to be a professional tennis player. I traveled and went to a special school for athletes. But I missed my family and friends when I was away. My mother moved to Oklahoma when I was 15. After I finished high school, I came to visit her, and decided to stay. I enrolled in the University of Oklahoma and joined the tennis program. I really enjoyed all four years in school. It was a great experience. I made lots of friends. College tennis is different from just being a solo player. I really liked being part of a team and enjoyed the team spirit and camaraderie. The coaching staff was great. They helped me to improve my game throughout those years. Now I have OU ring and I am really proud that I was Sooner. After I graduated, I moved to Tulsa because the father of my teammate owns a club here. I decided to stay in tennis so I can pass my knowledge to kids and people who want to learn more about this game. I really enjoy working with the friendly team at Shadow Mountain Racquet Club. I am thankful that I have always had great people surrounding me. . l

The Four Forehand Follow-Through Finishes
T
By Russell Warner, USPTA Master Professional The modern forehand is one of the most dynamic and powerful strokes in the game. There are different stances and preparations, various grips and variations within those grips. This article will discuss the follow-through finishes. The USPTA has identified four types of forehand groundstroke follow-through finishes: elevated, horizontal, inverted, and vertical. The elevated follow-through finish is over the opposite shoulder (traditional stroke). The horizontal finish is chest high and around the opposite arm. The inverted finish is around the opposite hip/ thigh. Lastly, the vertical follow-through finish is on the same side of the body, straight up and over the hitting shoulder. Some call the vertical the reverse follow-through. These are the four types the USPTA identified; however, there may be other types and definitions. When players begin taking lessons, most are taught the elevated or traditional follow-through. That finish is a great starting point, but all players should be encouraged to develop and work on dif-

ferent follow-throughs so they are equipped to attack or defend. The decision to use a follow-through is based on confidence in the shot, position on the court, and goal for the shot. Most player’s mistakes are because of footwork, stroke or recognition/decision making on which shot is appropriate. A player could use the elevated/traditional follow-through when the ball is in the ideal strike zone or when hitting on the rise. The horizontal finish is appropriate on high balls. The inverted followthrough can be used for excessive spin or sharp-angled shots. The vertical follow-through (or reverse) is good for shots when you cannot rotate your hips or legs. For example, when the ball is deep and hard, you do not have time to get around the ball. The next time you play a practice match or take a lesson, use different forehand follow-through finishes. This will develop your forehand to attack or defend. Then, as you develop confidence in those shots, use them in a match when it is appropriate and it will be effective. l
The horizontal finish is chest high and around the opposite arm.

LAFORTUNE TENNIS CENTER CONTINUES IMPROVEMENTS
Over the last few years, a major effort has been led by Tulsa County Parks Department, Melissa McCorkle - Director of Operations for LaFortune Tennis Center, and a dedicated group of enthusiastic volunteers to improve the tennis facilities at LaFortune Park. Phase I began March, 2008, as a result of Fred Perry, County Commissioner and Richard Bales, Tulsa County Parks Director, securing $1.2 million in public funds. Completed in November, 2008, Phase I included construction of 9 new lighted courts, retaining walls and ADA accessible sidewalks. No sooner were the 9 new “blue” courts opened, than plans were made for the second round of improvements. Phase II (Operation Facelift) was funded with $700,000 in public funds from “4-to-Fix II” plus over $600,000 in contributions from corporate sponsorships, volunteer-driven fundraising for a brick walkway, individual donations – especially from tennis patrons, and support from various foundations. Phase II includes replacement of the existing 6 lower and 3 upper courts with a post tension slab, drainage, lighting, scoreboard area, construction of a hard surface plaza west of the existing clubhouse and a tournament pavilion. Additionally, this phase includes shaded spectator bleachers and benches, thanks to previously secured donations. Phase II began September, 2009 and is scheduled for completion in May, 2010. LaFortune Tennis Center offers drills and private/ group lessons for adults and junior players of all levels. The Center is host to: non-competitive adult leagues, USTA Adult Leagues, USTA-sanctioned tournaments, USTA Junior Team Tennis, and Tulsa Area Tennis Association (TATA) Leagues. It also
10 Oklahoma Tennis Magazine August 2010
provides court time to private and public schools for team practice, plus local and state-wide high school tournaments. “Our youth programs are expanding at a rate no one could have ever predicted! All of our players are so grateful for everything Tulsa County Parks is doing to make this complex a ‘dream come true’ for Tulsa County!” said McCorkle. The staff at LaFortune Tennis Center has been swamped this past year, balancing over 14,000 players on only 12 tennis courts. The USTA predicts a 65% increase in players between the months of March and November, when all 21 outdoor courts are opened. Unfortunately, the Tennis Center has to shut down for 4 months each year because of weather and most of the junior players won’t get back on the courts until March. Fortunately, the initial master plan for the tennis complex consists of a third phase of construction. This includes 3 indoor courts and a single-story clubhouse with reception desk, administrative offices, locker rooms, retail sales area, lounge, observation deck and storage. Plans for Phase III have been in development since October 2009. Tulsa County Parks Department and LaFortune Tennis Center have gathered yet another group of dedicated volunteers to lead the fundraising for this project. Phase III will be funded solely by individual and corporate donations, foundation gifts, grants, and special fundraising events. “This committee definitely has a passion for the sport and I am more than ready to work with them to make this happen!” said McCorkle. “You know, our slogan for the LaFortune Tennis Center is ‘We are the CENTER of Tulsa tennis’, but I’d rather it be ‘We are the CENTER of OKLAHOMA tennis’”! l

From the time I was a little girl, my dream was to become a designer. Growing up in South Africa, I had the opportunity to follow my dream and study fashion design and pattern making. After taking up tennis, I realized there was a need for fun tennis clothing that fit all sizes, so I created my own patterns and began making skirts. When friends saw my skirts, they wanted fun clothes on the courts too, and what started as a hobby soon evolved into Designs by Landi, LLC. My primary focus is school uniforms that are fun. We work with coaches to design something special that will be exclusive to that school for the season. I have made uniforms for Jenks Middle School, Jenks High School, Bixby Middle School and NOAH, as well as several USTA teams. Designs by Landi offers customers the option to
choose from current designs or to be creative with their own designs. The possibilities are endless! The fabric we use for solid color designs has an unbelievably soft feel, superior stretch and recovery, and unmatched moisture wicking properties that make it the premier choice for tennis apparel. The deadline to place school orders for next year is October 31, 2010. My women’s clothing line will be available in September at “It’s A Racquet, Racquet Sports Sales and Service.” Please check our website, www. designsbylandi.com, for information on open houses and fitting appointments; custom fittings are by appointment only. Remember, our fun print skirts are available in all sizes, and if you have any questions, you may contact me, Landi Goosen, at infor@designsbylandi.com. l

HEALTH & FITNESS
The real cause of low back pain:
whose body deviates from its normal design does so as a result of muscular imbalances in strength and/or flexibility or improper joint function in cases not caused by past injuries or disease. By using this knowledge, one can predict instability and injury by using mobility limitations. Compensation in the lumbar spine as a result of hip immobility is the main cause of low back instability and will eventually lead to injury. The presence of severe low back instability without symptomatic pain is very common in our society and is the primary cause of back injury in people who have no previous experience with low back pain. These injuries can occur with the most benign of tasks such as bending over to pick up a pencil. The fact is, very few back injuries occur from a single event, but rather a history of excessive improper loading of the low back with compensatory motion resulting in weakened soft tissue over time and eventually to failure. So why do hips become immobile? The most common cause among the general public as well as casual athletes is our lifestyle. A significant portion of most people’s lives in our society involves sitting. We sit when we drive, eat, watch TV, work at the computer, and the list goes on. Prolonged sitting leads to muscle imbalances in the body, specifically tight and shortened hip flexors and external hip rotators. Neurologically, the brain inhibits the antagonistic muscle groups that act to balance the body, which are the gluteal muscles and trunk extensors. This imbalance leads to an altered posture and an altered distribution of load in the lower lumbar spine. The inhibited gluteal muscles leads to faulty movement patterns involving hip extension by recruiting synergistic muscles. The most common synergistic muscle that is recruited is the hamstring. How many people do you know who say they have tight hamstrings, and have always had tight hamstrings? If the hamstring is continually working, even in cases when it should be relaxing, it will result in chronic tight hamstrings. Chronic tight hamstrings contribute to excessive stress loads in the

The most current treatment protocol for low back pain is a schedule of antiinflammatory meds, muscle relaxers, possible epidural steroid injections, and then an archaic exercise regiment emphasizing the restoration of spinal range of motion. If these methods fail, surgery is often performed. Current treatment protocols have elicited some positive results in short time recovery, however, recent research indicates inadequacy in the long-term outcomes. Failure to address biomechanical based causes of back pain combined with the status quo treatment protocols, has lead to a new developing philosophy that relates the effect of hip mobility and its influence on the function of the spine. This model considers the history and mechanism of injury and 14 Oklahoma Tennis Magazine August 2010
couples that with the correlation between hip and lumbar spine mobility, stability and biomechanics. Basically, this model follows a simple rule that the hips and lumbar spine must be somewhat balanced in their strength and movement. Specifically, if the hips are too tight, the lumbar spine will compensate with excessive movement and decreased stability, often leading to pain. Converse ly, if the hips have excessive movement, this could lead to decreased mobility in the spine, creating an imbalance. Human movement is based on an alternating pattern of stability and mobility, starting from a stable foot and followed by a mobile ankle, stable knee, mobile hip, and stable pelvis/lumbar spine. If altered, dysfunction, compensation, and then faulty movement patterns will ensue. An individual

lumbar spine. The ultimate outcome of this is compensatory motion, increased mobility within the individual segments of the low back, leading to pain, and injury. Ben Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” A significant number of low back cases could be avoided by simply performing a daily routine of exercises and stretches that focus on lumbar stabilization and hip mobility. There are several key indicators and measurable ratios that can determine if you have altered hip and lumbar biomechanics and imbalances. First, an accurate analysis of hip mobility in all ranges of motion. Second, it is important to compare the strength ratio between your quadriceps and ham string muscles. If there is an imbalance with these two muscles, it can create torsion force on the pelvis, the platform for the spine. Finally, an accurate analysis of the ratio between hip and lumbar motion during for ward bending should be performed. Statistics show Once deficiencies are that nearly 80% of identified, a proper the population will program should be experience back pain established to encourage at some point during restoring proper motion, discouraging faulty their life. When these this condition, which is arise, I recommend going plaguing our society. to a qualified professional who has extensive training and certification in manual therapy. There are several manual therapy approaches currently out there being utilized to improve muscular health and function. Active Release Technique is a manual soft tissue technique using the examiners hands to apply the technique. The main concept is to re establish motion between muscles thus reducing adhesions and reestablishing proper glide between tissues. The technique utilizes patient active motion when ever possible. It is used to treat a variety of issues: shin splints, plantar fascitis, achilles tendonitis, tennis elbow, and almost all “soft tis sue” injuries. A tension contact is used as opposed to compressive contacts used in other soft tissue techniques. The results to both athletes and weekend warriors are phenomenal. Tyler Bachman is a Chiropractor at Huskey Chiropractic Clinic (918-747-0939) and is Full Body Certified in Active Release Technique. He works with the Tulsa Talons, Oilers, and 66ers. He has also been trained and certified by the Titleist Performance Institute to work with golf specific injuries and improve performance through improved biomechanics. Golden Eagles Make it to NCAA Tournament The Golden Eagles made their fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament in the past six seasons after upsetting top-seeded UMKC in the Summit League title match by a score of 4-2. ORU was forced to replace three starters from last season’s squad, including two-time Summit League Player of the Year Oleksandr Kotsuik, but still managed to avenge last year’s loss to the Kangaroos. The Golden Eagles went 4-2 during the Summit League regular season to earn a No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. ORU avenged both regular-season losses to IUPUI and UMKC in the league championships before falling to No. 7 Baylor in the NCAA opening round. Igor Sobolta, Dmitry Suslov and Mikhail Trukshanin all earned Summit League honors after combining for a 32-4 record in conference singles and doubles action. All three netters won both singles and doubles matches in the league tournament to carry the Golden Eagles to the title. Sobolta, a sophomore newcomer from Kiev, Ukraine, recorded a perfect 7-0 mark in conference singles play at the top two positions. Sobolta teamed up with Trukshanin at the top doubles spot for a 10-3 overall record and a 7-1 mark in conference play. The duo opened the season with an upset win over Tulsa’s tandem of Stephens and Turpin.
Suslov posted a 4-2 singles record and a 7-1 doubles mark with Dario Beslic in league action to earn his first-career allconference recognition. The Novgorod, Russia, native came up huge in the Summit League Tournament, winning both clinching singles matches, including a three-set tiebreaker to seal the upset over UMKC. Trukshanin, a sophomore newcomer from Minsk, Belarus, also earned a perfect 7-0 singles mark in league action this season at the top two positions. Head coach Chris Milliron Head coach Chris Milliron improved to 32-3 (.914) in regular-season conference matches in his sixth season at the helm of the men’s program, while upping his tournament record to 8-2 for an overall conference mark of 40-5 (.889). l
ORU Women Exceed Expectations The ORU women’s tennis team exceeded expectations during the 2010 season, finishing second in the Summit League after having to replace three of last year’s six starters, including the top two singles players. The Golden Eagles opened Summit League regular-season play with six consecutive victories before falling to eventual champion-IPFW by a score of 4-1. ORU closed out the regular season with a 4-0 sweep of Western Illinois to earn the No. 2 seed in the tournament. The Golden Eagles cruised past UMKC by a score of 4-0 in the opener, and narrowly lost to IPFW in the title match by a score of 4-2. ORU newcomer Lina Semenova fell in three sets at the top singles position as the Mastodons clinched the match, while Ekaterina Kondrashova was knotted up with IPFW’s Alex Forsyth in a third set when the match was called. ORU missed a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four seasons, but has a young base to build on to return to the postseason. Semenova was named the Summit League Women’s Tennis Newcomer of the Year, while Ana Costa and Ekaterina Kondrashova also earned all-league honors. Semenova, a sophomore from Minsk, Belarus, posted a 3-2 mark

at the No. 1 singles spot in conference play, while teaming up with Tayler Pippin for a 5-2 record in doubles play. Costa earned her second-career all-conference honor after going a combined 15-0 in singles and doubles play this season in league action. Costa posted a perfect 9-0 mark at the No. 4 singles position, while teaming up with Kristin Gray for a 6-0 record at the No. 2 doubles spot. The junior from Brasilia, Brazil, improved to 22-1 for her career in Summit League singles matches. Kondrashova, a sophomore from Moscow, Russia, posted a breakout season, earning a perfect 7-0 singles mark in league play and a 7-2 record with doubles partner Tori Dollar. With the 7-1 regular-season Summit League mark, Milliron improved to 40-7 (.851) in his sixth season at the helm. The women’s team has gone 6-2 in tournament play for an overall record of 46-9 (.836). l

DEAL WITH IT
by Sheilah Bright
COURT ANTICS
S
Somewhere on a Tulsa tennis court this weekend, a player will intentionally make a bad line call just for the point of it. Next week on a blazing summer night, someone in a tennis skirt will take her not-so-sweet time in exchanging sides just to send her opponent into a heated fury. At a senior’s match in 2011, someone with double knee braces will spend 5 minutes of your warm-up time complaining about a bad case of tennis elbow then whip out 10 aces in a row. Cheaters, stallers and liars, oh my why can’t we just play the game? Welcome to the unwelcoming world of court antics. Whether it’s a player hooking you by routinely forgetting the score or an obscenity-shouting “racqueteer”, it’s difficult to stick to your game when a court jester is unloading a bottomless bag of unethical tricks. Here are some thoughts on how to deal with it: Player perspective:
J
Me, aka Sheilah Bright, 4.0 player, O Philcrest/Southern Hills K What I want to do when facing a maniacE compulsive court jester with a line-calling R deficient disorder is morph into a megamaniac-compulsive court jester with an overactive line-calling deficient disorder. What I tend to do is take the “Don’t Get Mad,Get Even And Then Talk About It” approach. Try as I might to whip up some gamebending tactics of my own, I can’t ever follow through (much like my backhand) due toan incessantly loud chorus of “Thou Shalt Nots” ringing in my Baptist-bred ears.Honesty usually pays on the court and off. I know that if I tried to intentionally hook someone, I’d spend the rest of the match worrying that I would be struck down by lightening and die a tennis sinner. If you do get hooked by the lying-cheating kind, talk amongst your friends. Court antics go well with cocktails. Perpetrator’s perspective:
Miss Demeanor, Mistress of Deception (Editor’s note: Understandably, no one wanted to fess up in print unless weguaranteed placement in a tennis protection program. Considering our budget, weopted to gather their thoughts and create a fictional character that you will think you know) So I take long bathroom breaks between games and call the score wrong 10 or 15times during a match? That’s not cheating. That’s called being over 50. I might not see as well as I used to either, and I’m half colorblind so if the ball gets near a line, I’m 30 Oklahoma Tennis Magazine August 2010
calling it out. Aren’t you supposed to call it like you see it? Well, I don’t see it so well these days. Like I told a gal last Saturday, “it’s more out than in.” If a player doesn’t like my chattering or grunting during the match, they shouldswitch to chess or buy ear plugs. Tennis is supposed to be a social game, isn’t it? I’m about as social as it comes, especially when I’m down 0-40. If you make me mad, I’m going to cuss and throw things just like I do during our church business meetings. It’s just in my nature. In fact, it’s probably an undiagnosedmedical condition, and there are laws to protect me on that, I’m sure. I plan to keep playing this game just like I’ve been successfully playing it for years. After all, I win a lot of matches that I should lose. Seriously, here’s the best advice: Pro Perspective:
Pancho Walthall, Southern Hills Country Club: First and foremost, it is important to remain focused on the game plan and to play the ball, not the person. The biggest problem with playing someone who uses gamesmanship as part of their tactics is that it creates distractions which take focus away from the job at hand. In order to play our best, we need to concentrate on what weare trying to do with the ball. Understanding that the opponent is trying to create adistraction in order to disrupt concentration is an important first step in successfully dealing with the problem. Secondly, it is important to know the rules and use them to discourage tactics suchas stalling or cheating. If someone is consistently stalling, remind the opponent that theyhave 25 seconds between points and 1 minute on changeovers. If the opponentcontinues to break the rules, an official can be called in to time the intervals. In the caseof cheating on line calls, I generally advise my students to give the benefit of the doubtto the opponent on line calls, but if the opponent makes two or more blatantly bad calls, they should be confronted and told that they will receive the same kind of calls back ifthe cheating continues. In either case, if the bad behavior continues after confronting the player, the victim should seek help from a tournament official or in the case of USTA team matches, theteam captain. Finding a non-biased third party to stand on the side of the court to settledisputes will generally put an end to the problem. l
