Increasing your knowledge of local tennis activities and events
O
Ok - raise your hand if you knew John Isner, recent winner of the longest match in professional tennis, played in a tournament in Tulsa. Other notable professionals who have competed in Tulsa include: Taylor Dent, Sam Querrey, Mardy Fish, James Blake, and the Bryan brothers. These well known players have participated in the USTA Challenger of Oklahoma, hosted by Philcrest Hills Tennis Club. This is a jewel of a tournament that should be attended by all local players at least once during the week of September 13, that it is here in Tulsa. By the way, it’s free to attend. Please check out the tournament’s story on page 8, of this month’s issue. Raise your other hand if you’re aware that the 3rd Annual Bruce G. Weber Tennis Classic (for ladies only) is also scheduled for September. This tournament benefits The Children’s Hospital at Saint Francis and is quickly becoming a must play event. For additional information, turn to page 10. These are examples of top-flight tennis events occurring in the Tulsa metro area that might be missed by the tennis playing community, if not reported upon by Oklahoma Tennis Magazine (OTM). A goal of mine as publisher of OTM is to increase your awareness of tennis ‘happenings’ in the area; as you become more familiar with the publication, the level of your local tennis knowledge will increase substantially. The October issue will focus on junior tennis; from beginning lessons and the USTA’s Quickstart Program to spotlighting local juniors playing collegiate tennis. Please remember to send your questions, comments, and postings of scheduled tennis events to: readercomments@oktennismag.com. Also, if you didn’t pick up Oklahoma Tennis Magazine’s first issue, you may read it online at oktennismag.com.

FIRST SERVE
Southern Hills Foundation and The University of Tulsa team up for a summer tennis camp. By Ingrid Milliron Photography by Sherri Cook and Tammy Pickens Do you know that one of the largest tennis camps in the state takes place every summer on the campus of The University of Tulsa? Could you guess which tennis camp has some of the highest profile staff in Oklahoma? Would anyone believe that it’s free? Anybody who plays tennis or has kids who play tennis, knows that tennis can be an expensive sport. The cost of lessons, drills, clothing, and equipment makes it a costly sport that, unfortunately, keeps many kids from ever trying tennis. Welcome to First Serve! First Serve tennis camp is a grass roots program for
6 Oklahoma Tennis Magazine September 2010
beginners; it focuses on public school children who normally couldn’t afford to get involved in tennis. First Serve allows kids, who otherwise wouldn’t even think of trying tennis, the opportunity to try it at a young age. The camp is for kids age five through fourteen, and runs for five weeks every summer. The kids are provided with tennis racquets every day and allowed to keep a racquet when camp is over. Chris Milliron, head coach of men’s and women’s tennis at Oral Roberts University said, “Probably one of the best parts of this camp is seeing 150 kids playing tennis and knowing that if it wasn’t for
www.oktennismag.com
this camp, most of these kids would never have picked up a racquet. I love being a part of it!” First Serve tennis camp is in its eighth year and averages 500 kids every summer. It is awesome to imagine just how many kids have been introduced to tennis through this program. When asked, Vince Westbrook, director of First Serve and director of tennis at TU stated, “The Southern Hills Foundation gets all the credit. They have sponsored First Serve from the beginning and continue to make this program a success. I would especially like to thank Nick Sidorakis, general manager of Southern Hills for his role in making this program a reality”. This past summer 480 kids received instruction and an introduction to tennis from an amazingly qualified staff of instructors. Some of these instructors included ORU and TU head coaches, Division I assistant coaches, present and former college players, professional coaches, and All American players; the list is endless. Any tennis club in the state could only hope to have such a qualified staff. Dean Orford, director of operations for First Serve
and head women’s coach at TU commented, “First Serve is a great opportunity for my staff and players to give back to a community and sport that has given us so much.” First Serve will be hosting a one day tennis camp this October. This camp will be staffed by TU and ORU tennis players and various other volunteers. Presently, First Serve is working with 15 Tulsa Public Schools and expecting in excess of 600 students. This kid’s day will be held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on The University of Tulsa campus. There are many different tennis camps all over the state. Camps vary by size, price, level etc. All types of camps fulfill a purpose by promoting tennis in Oklahoma. It is impossible to say which camp is “the best,” but it would also be impossible to look past all of the positives that the Southern Hills Foundation has provided through First Serve. In many ways First Serve could truly be the best tennis camp ever! l
The First Serve program provides kids with a tennis racquet every day and lets them keep it when the camp is over.

TCT: Inside the League
T
The USTA season may be over, but local tennis competition is just now heating up, thanks to TCT - Tennis Competitors of Tulsa. Since beginning in 1993 under the leadership of Eileen Hannaford, TCT has provided a recreational, yet competitive Fall league for players. The league allows opportunities to combine unequal NTRP levels for team competition. Running from August through October, TCT features adult matches on weeknights and weekend play for mixed and senior level matches. The season closes with a banquet celebration held during the second week of November. The league’s popularity has kept the all-volunteer organization hopping to meet the growing demands from players. In the early years, TCT’s use of public park courts often made it necessary for a few players to show up well in advance to engage the courts and ensure availability for scheduled match time. The league initially coordinated only women’s doubles; mixed doubles was added in ’94 and men joined the league in 2002. Three years later, seniors were added to the association and over the years, TCT has sponsored several tournaments.
At first, volunteers spent hours mailing registration forms, match schedules, score sheets, and results of play. Beginning in 2007, TCT began keeping minutes of meetings and sending out informational updates via email. In 2009, paperwork FOR INFORMATION was further reduced when on matches, contact links and how to become more player registration was made involved in TCT, please visit available via the Internet, http://tulsatct.com. thanks to Liliana Crossley. Currently, TCT has over 1,200 members, uses nine different facilities, and coordinates 132 matches. There is more to TCT than court play, however. The organization has donated thousands of dollars to local efforts for youth tennis, contributed to LaFortune Park improvements, recognized many outstanding players and assisted area clubs. Through the years many people have contributed countless hours to keep TCT bouncing along. Nineteen volunteers have four-plus years of service: Kim Bates, Pat Bloomfield, Martin Brody, Polly Curtis, Pam Elliott, Blanca and Jose Falcon, Jill Glenn, Betty Gresham, Nan Harris, Sandy Hurlbutt, Penny Joseph, Pat Meek, Debbie Mocnik, Gloria Mullenix, Geri Phelan, Caryl Rieckman, Laurie Swarer, and Betty Jo Wohl. l

HEALTH
Healthy Food & Drink Options at QuikTrip By Marleta Giles
Y
You just finished a difficult three-setter and the tournament director was overly generous in granting a full one-hour break until it’s back to the court. Hmmm, not really enough time to take in a casual (and cool) restaurant; besides, choking down a burger and fries may spell disaster during the next match. A convenient place, not normally considered for obtaining a nutritious snack, is the nearby QuikTrip store. Yes, all of your between-match nutritional needs can be met at QT; you just need to know what to look for. Hydration is the single most important thing to do for your body during strenuous exercise - especially in hot weather. Heat depletes the body’s fluids at a faster rate, so recharging your engine with replenishing fluids is imperative. Water is always a good choice, but supplementing it with valuable carbohydrates and electrolytes can be even better. QuikTrip has some easy picks for this: Gatorade G2, a low-calorie thirst quencher that rehydrates and replenishes with a balance of carbohydrates, sodium and potassium. QT also carries Naked, an all-natural drink that is rich in carbs and electrolytes and very tasty over ice. Carbohydrates give bodies energy. Replenishing with simple carbs is important – particularly when playing multiple matches because simple carbs are quickly absorbed and converted into energy. Fruit falls into this category, with bananas known as the super fruit for replenishing carbohydrates and potassium. A variety of fresh and prepared fruit, with no added sugars, can be found at QuikTrip stores. Other healthy options found at QT include raw or roasted nuts, which pair well with bananas and help with muscle recovery. If you prefer energy bars, Clif Bars are an excellent choice – they’re available in a variety of flavors and packed with hearty nutrition. For another natural lift, a product call FRS may be found in chew-form by the cash register. FRS is full of antioxidants and a healthy fatigue fighter. It is said, “Be good to your body and it will be good to you.” Remember, healthy snack options are worth looking for and one need not look further than the nearby QuikTrip store. l

PRO TIPS
The Volley By Melissa McCorkle, USPTA
T
The volley may be the easiest shot in tennis, but it can also be tricky. Therefore, it’s important to determine what kind of volley should be hit, and when. There are several variations of the volley. These are commonly accepted as the block volley, the punch volley, and the swing volley. The choice of which volley to use is determined by the height and speed of the oncoming ball. If the ball is extremely fast, use the block volley with minimal backswing and a very firm wrist. If the ball is slightly slower, use the punch volley. This allows you to turn your shoulders and take your racquet back no further than your rear shoulder.
Forehand punch volley
If the ball is higher and a bit slower, take the racquet back further and hit a swing volley. In today’s modern game there is an additional volley that was not recommended in the early era of tennis: the aggressive swing volley, a shot which the player hits with strong, looping topspin, even from mid-court or behind. Remember, when playing the net it is important to always be ready. Be ready with quick hands and quick feet, and be ready to make contact in front of your body. Also, always assume the ball is coming to you and have a predetermined spot on the court as your target. l

Is Restringing Your Racquet Important? By David Bone, Executive Director United States Racquet Stringers Association
Y
Yes, it is very important that players get their racquets restrung regularly. In fact, some tour pros restring all their racquets every match, whether they used them in the match or not. They do this because strings lose tension over time and they want to reduce the amount of tension loss before each match. They also do it to avoid breaking strings in the middle of a match—tour players hate losing a point because of a string and they hate switching racquets in the middle of a game. OK, you’re probably thinking, “I’m not a tour player, so these issues don’t apply to me.” Actually all of these concepts still apply whether you are a 3.5 USTA League player or a touring pro. And, if you’re a mere mortal who doesn’t restring your frames very often, there are even more reasons to start restringing more regularly. Even if you’re not playing on the tour, you probably play matches that are important to you every so often. Well, just like a pro, you don’t want a string to break in the middle of one of these important matches. Restringing regularly can reduce this risk. Secondly, over time, strings lose their resiliency. This is kind of like an old rubber band. The fibers break down and the string stops bouncing back the way it did when it was new. This means you have to work harder to generate the same quality of shots you did when the strings were new. As strings get older and less resilient, your chances of developing tennis elbow also increase. The feel of a string also changes over time from crisp and firm to mushy and difficult to control. But, you tend to adjust to that while it is happening. Then, when you do get your racquet restrung, it feels very different. By restringing more often, you reduce the need to make such a big adjustment. The last reason I offer is probably the best reason. You should be trying different new strings every so often. Manufacturers of strings are constantly improving their products. If you have been using the same strings for 10 years, you probably wouldn’t believe how good some of the newer strings can feel in your racquet. But, you can’t find out unless you get your racquet restrung. Now let me try to answer the questions that I think are even more important. When To Restring The most obvious time to restring is when you have broken a string. But other times are recommended too.
Years ago the industry started a campaign to get people to restring more often. They suggested that players get their racquet strung as many times per year as they play in a week. So, if you play 3 times a week, you should get your racquet strung 3 times each year. This program did help increase awareness and many players did start restringing more often. However, this technique isn’t really very scientific. For example, if a player plays once per week, should he really wait an entire year to get his racquet restrung? No, the truth is that strings wear out faster than that even if you play infrequently. Also, should a player who plays for 1 hour 5 times a week restring their racquet 5 times as often as a player who plays 5 hours once a week? No, both of these players are probably putting similar amounts of stress on their strings. There is a better way. Instead of just guessing when a string is worn out, try using tools to check it. There are a number of tools which measure stringbed stiffness or string tension. These tools give readings that can be used to determine what percentage of tension has been lost. For example, if stringbed stiffness measures 50 immediately after a racquet has been strung, try checking the strings every few weeks until it registers a stringbed stiffness of 37 to 35. When a racquet has lost 25 to 30 percent of its stringbed stiffness or tension, it’s time to restring. For some players, this will take longer to happen than it will for others. If you don’t have a tool for measuring stringbed stiffness, then ask your stringer. If you’ve never strung a racquet yourself, you probably don’t feel like you would know a professional string job from a bad string job. So, let me give you a few things to check for next time you get your racquet restrung. The most important thing to look for is consistency of results. There are many different ways to string that are all good and professional, but only if they can reproduce the same results time and again. It doesn’t do you any good if a stringer can make your racquet feel just right once unless he can do it again and again.
How To Find A Good Stringer You want to find a stringer who is knowledgeable and professional. Members of the United States Racquet Stringers Association (USRSA) have access to all the information, services, and tools needed to offer professional quality services. Many members of the USRSA have also taken the time to become certified. They can either become Certified Stringers or Master Racquet Technicians. Technicians who have passed these tests have proven that they are able to perform professional quality racquet service. For more information about the differences between the two certifications or to find a stringer near you, visit racquettech.com. There you will find a tool called Find-A-Racquet Technician/Stringer. This tool lists all the USRSA members and even indicates which members have chosen to become certified.

Nine Stringing Errors To Watch Out For Misweaves—A misweave is any failure to ensure that all cross strings alternate over and under each main string or failure to be the opposite weave of the cross string above or below. A misweave will stick out like a sore thumb. Crossovers—A crossover is when one or more strings sit on top of another string instead of next to that string; they occur outside the frame in the grommet strip. A crossover can cause the string on top to sit higher than the profile of the frame or bumperguard. This can expose the string to scraping on the court when shots are hit low—over time this scraping can cause premature breakage. Notches—Notches in the main strings can also cause premature breakage, although you won’t be able to notice them in general play. Strings break because they saw into each other during play. Loose Individual Strings—Through close examination, you may find certain strings that seem to be looser than those around them. Playing will probably cause the tighter strings to share their load with the looser strings. The end result is lower tension across the racquet. Empty Holes—This is a pretty easy error to spot. Simply check all the grommets in a racquet to make sure they all have strings in them. If you do find one or more empty holes, the racquet should definitely be restrung right away. Empty holes indicate that the manufacturer’s pattern was not followed. This will void the warranty on a frame because it creates stress that the racquet was
not designed to handle. Cracks or Warping—Before playing with a freshly strung racquet, check to see if it is cracked or warped. Either way, the racquet is probably ruined. But, before you blame the stringer, make sure you are positive that the frame was not cracked or warped before stringing. Scratches on the Frame—This error might be the worst in some players’ minds. It shouldn’t affect the playability of the racquet, but it can be upsetting to you. Scratches are usually the mark of a stringer with limited experience. Crushed or Scraped Strings—Crushed or scraped strings are a sign that the stringer is having problems with their clamps. If you find sections of string with deep indentations where the clamps held the strings, it is a sign that the clamps were dirty and had to be over-tightened to avoid slippage. A string with bad scratches on its surface, suggests that the clamps have diamond dust and were not adjusted tight enough. When the string slips through the clamp, the diamond dust, which is like sandpaper, scrapes the cover off the string. Crooked Strings—The last error we mention is crooked strings. If a freshly strung racquet has crooked strings, it will probably have little or no effect on the playability. But, it could be a sign of a stringer who is not taking pride in the professional appearance of their work. l

Tennis Players Helping the Homeless
‘Pitch ’em in the Bin’
(used court shoes that is)
Here is a simple way for the tennis playing community to help the homeless in our community: Select one pair of tennis shoes with some life left in them, bring to Shadow Mountain Racquet Club and pitch ‘em in the bin marked, “Tennis Shoes for the Homeless.” It’s simple! Once a month Jan O’Connor, a thoughtful Shadow Mountain member, empties the bin and takes approximately twenty-five pairs of shoes to Tulsa Day Center for the Homeless. The shoes are thoroughly inspected and cleaned before given to a new owner. The program has recently been expanded to include donations of new socks, warm hats and small bottles of shampoo, conditioner and lotions. If you are interested in learning more about this project or considering a donation program at your tennis facility, please contact Jan O’Connor at kcocon52@cox.net. Step up; when your tennis shoes are no longer supporting your game, donate them to the homeless. It’s truly a winwin. So go ahead and pitch ’em in the bin.

Tulsa Tennis Club Tournament Recap
F
From July 13-16, the Tulsa Tennis Club hosted its first clay court tournament in over three decades. In the 1950’s, 60’s, and ‘70’s, players such as Chris Evert, Jimmy Connors, Dick Stockton, and John McEnroe traveled to Tulsa for the annual event. Eventually the increase in professional prize money made it difficult to attract top level players. In an effort to rekindle the atmosphere of those tournaments, Tulsa Tennis Club President Diana Benien spear-headed an effort to bring the event back, but this time in the form of a junior event. Over a four-day period, top ranked juniors from Tulsa, Muskogee, and Oklahoma City competed on the clay in the 14s and 16s age divisions. Entries were open to all competitive tennis players.

Byron Alp, the Club’s Head Pro, ran the tournament and the Club provided dinner for all players, rented stands for spectators, and gave the players full access to the club for the week. “We had a great response to this first tournament, and all of the players and their parents encouraged us to do it again, which we plan to do. Our members loved the event and we saw some fabulous tennis on a surface that most of the kids do not get to play on very often,” commented Lane Wilson, a former varsity player at The University of Tulsa and Tulsa Tennis Club member. All entrants were guaranteed at least three 2 out of 3 set matches, and in a throwback to the original tournaments played at the Club, the “super-tiebreaker” was eliminated. This required the participants to play out a full third set, which according to

DEAL WITH IT
by Sheilah Bright
NET CRASHERS
Y
You can usually spot them early in pre-match practice as you gently warm up your game. Impatient on the baseline, they practice a few ground strokes with the enthusiasm of a sloth and then sprint within inches of the net as if marking their territory. “I’ll take a few up,” the player croons and soon you realize the true translation is “Pardon me while I knock those veneers off your teeth.” One of the most aggressive creatures of the Tennis Kingdom, these volley badgers chomp down on weak lobs and wounded service returns with bloodthirsty fervor. Each explosive overhead smash seems to work like a growth hormone, and you swear they’ve grown four inches, most of it in their arms, since the first and second set. Before long, you’re digging around in a bag of tricks that you forgot to pack while Smashmouth is drooling in anticipation of the next course. Endangered species, they are not. However, stocking up on a game strategy and understanding how to wield some net force of your own can help tame the beast - or at least tranquilize it. Here is some advice from local players and tennis professionals: AMANDA SCROGGS, 4.5 PLAYER/INSTRUCTOR/MVP NET CRASHER
My favorite place to be when playing is absolutely at the net. That is where you win the points. When playing doubles, you should look for any opportunity to approach the net. If you can, try to serve and volley. If you aren’t comfortable with that strategy, try to move in at the earliest opportunity. If the server has a weak first or second serve, look to attack it and move in. Otherwise, keep looking for the opportunity to hit an aggressive shot and move forward. In my opinion, you are not doing your partner any favors if you are stationary on the court. You need to be following the bounce of the ball and trying to poach at every opportunity. You should also be moving on every shot that is hit: offensive positioning when the ball is in the opponent’s court and defensive positioning when the ball is in your court. If all players are relatively equal in ability, the team that gets both players to the net first will most likely win the point. So, work on those approach shots, master those overheads, dominate those volleys, and win the points. Make yourself a threat to your opponents. (Editor’s note: Anyone who has been opposite the net of Amanda knows that she practices what she teaches. Playing it forward is the name of her game!) PAT EAGAN, 4.0 PLAYER/PHILCREST/PROFESSIONAL TOPSPIN LOBBER
Sometimes when I walk onto the court, I hear my opponents say, “Watch out for her topspin lob.” I take it as a compliment. When I was a singles player, the younger players tried to use the strategy of constantly coming into the net. In doubles, it was always a battle to 30 Oklahoma Tennis Magazine September 2010
deal with net crashers and poachers. Finally, I told my tennis pro that I wanted to learn how to send a message in the form of a topspin lob. I seriously worked on it. We first started on topspin ground strokes, then moved on to topspin lobs. What helped me achieve this shot was the pro’s advice: “It’s like rolling a tire.” If I see one player up and one back, I lob over the net player. If both are chewing on the net, I try to send the ball up to their backhand to force a backhand overhead, one of the hardest shots in tennis. This strategy has worked well for me in many tennis matches. The topspin lob is one of my favorite shots. I may even have it written on my tombstone since I’ve nearly killed myself and my partner when it’s come up “SHORT!” That’s the only downside to lobbing a net crasher: A lob can really burn you and your partner if it doesn’t make it to the back court. When a topspin lob does hit its mark, it’s a thing of beauty as you watch your ball sail over the heads of your stunned net-hugging opponents. BYRON ALP: TENNIS PRO/TULSA TENNIS CLUB Most net crashers are well skilled and crafty volleyers. It is important to take a net crasher out of his or her element, which means making them do things that are tough. Keep them off balance. Whether they’re serving and volleying or approaching the net, it is imperative that you remember one thing when a net crasher attacks: Aim at their feet to force them to hit low volleys. Typically low volleys result in short balls which will enable you to hit more aggressive passing shots. Aiming at their feet ensures hitting a higher percentage ball over the low part of the net, which is an added benefit. Another shot that can be used as a weapon against net crashers is the lob. Typically, confident volleyers try to get very tight on the net so the closer they are to the net, the easier it is to lob them effectively. Another way to take a net crasher out of their element is to crash the net before they do. Net crashers obviously prefer volleying rather than hitting ground strokes. Keeping balls deep during rallies and moving the ball from side to side will make attacking more difficult. By using this strategy your opponent will hit the ball short, allowing you to attack and turn the tables on them. You will be sending a strong message of your own: Pass me now. A final thought - If tennis were a comic book, a Net Crasher would get top billing as both the superhero and the evil twin: Night of the Living Net Thrasher, Attack of the Venom Volley, Revenge of the Fuzzy Ball Freakers. Love them as a partner. Fear them as an opponent. Keep playing the game, and you will eventually face off with a Net Crashernator. Learning their game can amp up your net play and could help you save face - in more ways than one. www.oktennismag.com
