Last year was an amazing year for the City of Sapulpa and I was lucky enough to be a part of the excitement! I was hired as the Chamber President in November 2021 and that started a whirlwind year that ended with our city being highlighted on the Today Show for the Route 66 Christmas Chute display. Our town is booming and I’m thrilled to ride the wave with everyone.
I believe the catalyst for the change was the passing of the GO Bond in 2020. So many fantastic projects in the works from a new fire station to the Downtown Master Plan which included developing an alley district to improve the walkability of our beloved downtown. The north side has been completed and it’s gorgeous! The south side of the alley will be an even bigger project that is slated to begin at the end of January.
In 2022 we have seen several businesses come to town, the Chamber did several ribbon-cuttings, and 72 new members joined the Chamber! The Route 66 Christmas Chute saw thousands of visitors, most of whom were from out of town. We were so happy to show off not only the Chute but our wonderful community.
We are fortunate that Route 66 goes right through the heart of Sapulpa— we host visitors from all over the world because of it! Sapulpa is gearing up to celebrate the Mother Road’s 100th Birthday in 2026. There will be events and projects to lure in the Route 66 enthusiast.
We hope that if you are picking up our Guide you are going to visit, but we’d love for you to stay! This spring we will have a bond election to build a state-ofthe-art high school that we hope will entice new families to move to our area. Our parks include an aquatics center, a state-of-the-art soccer complex, and a new all-inclusive playground at Liberty Park for children of all physical capabilities. The Everyday Heroes Inclusive Playground is a National Demonstration Site for the “7 Principles of Inclusive Playground Design”, incorporating all seven principles while celebrating the hero within each of us. Our largest park, Kelley Lane, hosts the Rock Creek Festival, Spooktacular at Halloween, a Reindeer run in December, a dog park, and home to several access points for our walking trails. Rock Creek Golf Course on Route 66 is a picturesque 18-hole public course. The Bartlett Sports Complex is in its third phase of build-out and will open to league play later this year. This new 100-acre complex will allow for all little league baseball and soccer in one convenient location.
Sapulpa’s Downtown is booming with new development and revitalization. With the main thoroughfare for downtown being Historic Route 66, plans are moving forward to transform the busy highway to a slowed down walkable space full of nostalgia and places to stop and experience. Transitioning to a walkable space with newly designed and refurbished alleyways allow for events such as the Christmas Chute; Hobson Hops, the Route 66 Blowout, Rock the Route, and many others. Visitors and citizens can shop for hidden treasures in one of several antique shops or find that original, one-of-a-kind piece in one of our specialty shops.

There is only one Sapulpa. It’s located in northeastern Oklahoma and named after its first permanent resident a Native American.
And therein lies the story of its first settler and merchant, railroads, Black Gold, and a hardy community spirit.
The Native American was Chief Sapulpa, who around 1850 established a trading post near the confluence of Polecat and Rock Creeks—about one mile southeast of the downtown in the city that carries his name. A full-blooded lower Creek Indian of the Kasihta Tribe in Osocheetown, Alabama, Chief Sapulpa was not an actual chief, but in honor of his influence and entrepreneurship. His arrival in Indian Territory was part of the forced migration of Native
Americans from the southeast U.S.
His name received an even greater honor one year prior to his death in 1886 when the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad extended into the area and called its location “Sapulpa Station.” It is said that Chief Sapulpa had befriended the railway workers.
Cotton and corn as well as produce were the mainstays of railway traffic moving out of Sapulpa Station in those early days—later to be followed by beef. And then came Black Gold.
Oil! Glenn Pool! A legendary strike six miles southeast of Sapulpa. Soon the area around Sapulpa and its nearby neighbors boomed—Sapulpa’s downtown grew as two and three and four story buildings began going up along Dewey Avenue (which was to become a part of the legendary
Route 66) from the mid-1900s through the 1920s. There was no need for skyscrapers—there was plenty of land to build on in this 1898-incorporated city.
At one time, Sapulpa proudly called itself “The Oil City of the Southwest.” But, over time, Tulsa’s location on the Arkansas River, the building of a bridge crossing it, and the building of what was once the world’s busiest airport, ending up dominating the oil business, and Sapulpa turned to industry— bricks, glass, pottery, to name but three—as primary engines of the city’s economy. Ever adapting to a changing world, today Sapulpa is economically diversified with more than 130 manufacturers employing some 5,000 workers.
The coming Centennial of Route 66 in 2026 is close to the heart of Sapulpa’s citizens. For as travelers far and wide tour the legendary “Mother Road” now, and when they
celebrate the Centennial, they will see hollowed out cities along the way— downtowns with abandoned buildings, or simply vacant lots where merchants once thrived. not so in Sapulpa.
Not only is the spirit of preservation and renewal strong in Sapulpa (How many other cities are reopening drive-In movie theaters?)—this is a city that long ago decided not to survive, but to thrive. The Christmas 2022 opening of the threeblock long Christmas Chute, which attracted an estimated 500,000 visitors to downtown Sapulpa, is emblematic
of that same spirit which can also be found in the community’s pride in its heritage, as well as the 18-building walking tour (use the QR symbol found on each building for its story) on Dewey Avenue/ Route 66.

Three answers to a growing question
Sapulpa’s growth can be told in numbers and national publicity, a more compelling story is found in the decisions of three businessmen who relocated to Sapulpa and answered the question, “Why Sapulpa?”
While details of their moves differ in the details, the bottom line for all three comes down to two real estate and “business school” cliches: “Location, location, location,” and “cost, cost, cost.” (Not to be ignored, however, is a third: the welcoming Sapulpa community.)
Three who made the move to this bright spot on Route 66 are David Reed, John Droz and Michael Jones.
The 2017 tornado that severely damaged Tulsa’s iconic Remington Tower on I-44 prompted Reed’s move. “We expected to move back in when the building was renovated, but that didn’t happen,” Reed recalls. After spending two years in
temporary offices in Tulsa and the retirement of one of the firm’s founders, “we were considering a number of possibilities when I received a call from Will Berry, at D.C. Bass and Sons Construction Company. His offices are on Hobson, and he suggested that I call Larry White about a building he had on Hobson.
“I ended up having my team, which was eight at the time, spend a day in Sapulpa—touring the city and downtown, looking at this building and several other locations. I didn’t want to lose any of the team members, including one living in Owasso.
“Fortunately, they fell in love with the building and the town. I also wanted to make sure there were no client issues—such as Tulsa Public Schools. They were supportive saying that Sapulpa is part of the
community we live in.
Reed purchased the building at 18 E. Hobson, which at various times was a livery stable, automotive garage, carpentry shop, glass blowing plant and an event venue— and following the renovation— moved the staff into the new home of Reed Architecture and Interiors.
The personal touch for Reed was that “Sapulpa is my adopted hometown and I’ve always felt welcome here.”

John Droz’s story involved four professionals working for an engineering firm in Tulsa. “Four of us were going to downtown Tulsa every day. I had been living in Sapulpa since 2001 and like the feel of the community. Fact is, I love living in a town the size of Sapulpa—the people are welcoming here and we couldn’t be happier.”
Part of that happiness from a business standpoint is that “rent is way better here, and in regard to Tulsa if you are commuting and your work is in Sapulpa, you are against traffic both coming and going—it is a quicker commute.” The company, Route 66 Engineering, is a Sapulpa startup, and is involved in site development, “that could be said to be everything on the outside of a building—grading, paving,
sidewalks, etc.,” notes Droz, from offices at 28 N. Water.
Michael Jones, owner of the then Broken Arrow based-Gasoline Alley Classics, had been involved in the Sapulpa Route 66 Blowout Car Show and was visiting Sapulpa Main Street’s Director Cindy Lawrence to talk over show details some eight years ago.
“I’ve always loved Sapulpa’s downtown and Route 66—my family and I have traveled both directions on Route 66 and have seen the good and the not so good downtowns on it. One thing led to another and Cindy suggested that I take a look at a building on the southwest corner of Hobson and Main.”

“My family and I talked and prayed, and the price was right, and we bought it from the Williams family. I also consulted my accountant and he told me, “You should have stupid printed on your forehead if you didn’t buy this building.”
“Over seven years and two months my family and friends did 90 percent of the work to bring the building to its opening in 2022,” Today, Gasoline Alley Classics, Inc. manufactures game room, garage, and Man Cave décor, as well as a sign shop and powder coating services from 18 E. Hobson.
Looking back and ahead, Jones says, “Sapulpa was kind of a Rip Van Winkle, content with where it was, but now the city is moving forward. We’re fortunate to have so many great buildings still standing, and are either being renovated or

Droz, who has the added perspective of living in Sapulpa since 2001 notes, “In the last five years, we’ve seen downtown with four or five places open to “a ton of businesses and companies moving in.” He expects that trend to continue.

You won’t see many empty storefronts and bleak parking lots along Route 66 (also known as Dewey Avenue) in downtown Sapulpa. What you will see is a downtown’s dream of revitalization that is happening before its visitors’ and citizens’ eyes.
Fortunately, the foundation upon which this renaissance is being built was not destroyed by haphazard attempts at revitalization that featured demolition as its primary mode of “improvement.” When a building had to come down, the impulse wasn’t to cover the resulting area over with paving and stripes and turn it into an empty parking lot—as has been done in some cities.
No, in Sapulpa an example of exemplary downtown land use when a building is demolished is found at the corner of Dewey and Water—a beautiful urban pocket park and green spot know as Martha’s Corner—a meeting place and quiet respite for visitors and Sapulpans alike.
On a larger scale, both businesses and residents are moving to a newly vibrant downtown.
On an even larger scale the now-nationally-
recognized Christmas Chute has not only been a boost for downtown’s redevelopment but has shown what the people of Sapulpa can do through a commitment to not only preserve, but grow its downtown.
Built through $800,000 in private donations (and over 600 volunteers), the Route 66 Christmas Chute, a three-block Christmas Walk, with 15,000 feet of decorations, 15,000 feet of garland, 8,500 icicles, 1,100 giant ornaments, and 35,000 lights. The Chute attracted an estimated 500,000 visitors from states such as New Mexico and North Dakota, and countries such as Finland and New Zealand. It has not only been a tourist attraction and point of pride for the community, but also an economic boost. One merchant noted that during the first month of the opening of the Christmas Chute, their store’s revenue equaled that of the previous eleven months. The kind of numbers that show the potential of Sapulpa’s historic downtown is starting to realize.
Extensive local and regional media coverage turned into national recognition through NBC’s popular Today Show as Sapulpa got national recognition as one of the “Merriest Main Streets” in America.

As an urbanologist would say, it takes more than a singular event to move a downtown the right direction. Examples of that happening include new businesses. Gasoline Alley Classics, a remarkable Route 66 automobile memorabilia shop, is thriving in a former Model T assembly facility and car dealership. (An address that through the years was also a hotel, tire shop, sewing center, and mattress store—among other
businesses.)
Former second and third story apartments above retail and other venues on Route 66 are being repurposed. Examples include the Airbnb located upstairs in the former City Hall.

Architecture—and this is located on Hobson St, the first street north of Route 66 and Dewey Avenue— showing how the renovation seed can grow. Ambitious plans are underway to create an entertainment area along Hobson—further expanding the footprint of downtown renovation. Part of the downtown master plan calls for alleys to be rehabilitated into pathways connecting different parts of downtown. Phase one was completed in 2022 and work will soon begin on the next phase. Phase 2 will include outdoor dining spaces, numerous gathering areas and public restrooms.
More pocket parks are being developed, alleys are being renovated, and restaurants are making plans to join Sapulpa’s thriving casual dining scene. All this has created an increase of visitors to a historic downtown that is looking forward to the next 100 years. Sapulpa is drawing up plans for the 100-year anniversary of Route 66 in 2026.
Entering Sapulpa on Route 66 from the west, you know that you’re in Sapulpa when you see the rennovated TeePee Drive-In on the north side of the road. Refurbished in 2022, its grand opening in 2023 will bring back not only memories of nights at the movies in the comfort of your own car, but it will introduce a new generation to that summertime experience. As you pass the Drive-In, you’ll see an example of one of the few remaining steel truss bridges in Oklahoma—the Rock Creek Bridge.
Continuing on Route 66, see the world’s largest gas pump that will signal to you that you have arrived at the Route 66 Auto Museum with its collection of rare and unusual vintage automobiles that once shared the road you are travelling on.
Across from the Museum is Sapulpa’s Municipal Rock Creek Golf Course, a friendly, but also challenging, experience. Continuing up Route 66 and cresting the hill, Sapulpa’s historic jewel of a downtown will appear before you.
While in downtown, pause to shop at the many boutique stores, antique malls, restaurants and coffee shops. For a real historical experience, stop at any one of eighteen buildings along Dewey Avenue (Route 66 in Sapulpa) and point your cell phone at the QR code posted on the front of the building for fascinating facts about the history of the building you’re standing in front of.
As you leave downtown, make note of the historic Creek Country Court House and then you’ll turn left on Mission Street (which, if you continue, will take you to nearby Tulsa) and consider stopping at Happy Burger, the oldest, continuously operating drive-in on Route 66—which displays one of the highway’s magnificent neon signs.
On your way out of town you may feel like you are saying good bye to Sapulpa, but actually you are in Sapulpa for five more miles. Along those Route 66 Sapulpa miles you go through Sapulpa thriving industrial district. Don’t miss The Guardian of the Plains, a mammoth bison sculpture that stands upon a mound overlooking Route 66. He bids you farewell and come back soon.

Activities for all ages, abilities and interests
Sapulpa may be classified as a mid-size community, but it has big city recreational opportunities and activities for citizens and visitors of all ages—even the four-legged kind.
For example, under the category of true inclusiveness, Sapulpa boasts of “Wiggly Field.” A Dog Park in centrally-located Kelly Lane Park. In regard to being open to all, Liberty Park is the home of Sapulpa’s inclusive playground that includes solid safety surfacing and ramp access, inclusive swings, sensory equipment, and areas for specific age groups.
For a myriad of activities, Kelly Lane is also Sapulpa’s flagship destination with fishing in its pond, disc golf, outdoor fitness equipment, and even an escape from the urban environment into the woods right in the middle of town. Another popular feature allows parents to easily watch their children while they enjoy playground equipment and the skatepark.
For those seeking more vigorous activities, visit Liberty Park with sand volleyball, disc golf, a half-mile paved walking trail, and lighted courts for basketball, tennis and the new recreational rage: pickleball. And if all these summertime pursuits warm one up, cool off at
the Sapulpa Aquatic Center. Open from Memorial Day weekend to early August, the Aquatic Center has a zero entry with a large shallow area, slides and spray fountains. It also offers swim lessons, hosts birthday parties and can be rented for private events.
Other parks and their claims to park and recreation fame include:
Heritage Park, which was designed by Sapulpa elementary students and built by community volunteers. Davis Park, which invites children to do a little creek stompin’.
Hollier Park, the site of the best views in Creek County for quiet contemplation.
Bartlett Youth Sports Complex that hosts baseball, soccer, and football contests.
Booker T. Washington Recreational Center and Sapulpa Senior Citizen Community Center which have indoor facilities.
But there’s more: for the true outdoor enthusiast visits to Lake Sahoma and Pretty Water, only ten minutes from downtown, are a must. Pretty Water is stocked by Sapulpa Parks with trout in the winter, and catfish in the summer. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife stocks
Lake Sahoma with a variety of fish. Anglers land from bass to crappie, and catfish to perch, with the right “hook, line and sinker”, or lure.
Lake Sahoma also offers RV and tent camping, an indoor heated fishing dock and easy access for fishing boats, kayaks and canoes. The Lake Sahoma Bait Shop is stocked with lures, minnows and snacks for a day at the lake. City and state fishing licenses are required for both Sahoma and Pretty Water.

Sapulpa is also proud of the Salvation Army Community Center on South Hickory. This major community asset includes a weight room, walking track, indoor pool, basketball court and a general recreational room, as well as church services.
There’s no reason to be a couch potato in Sapulpa with all of its big city parks and recreational opportunities.

While Sapulpa’s earliest days are notable for newspaper advertisements for “patent medicines” and various “miracle elixirs” available at local drug stores, the community quickly responded to the oil boom and its population expansion by building the Sapulpa City Hospital in 1921. Some three decades later, the H.U. and Eva Maud Bartlett Foundation purchased the hospital and rapidly expanded it to meet growing community needs. It is this kind of commitment to healthcare that is carried on today by Ascension St. John Sapulpa, and the many healthcare professionals who live and practice here.
From new construction to historic homes Sapulpa offers homes of all sizes for every point in life.
Sapulpa is a city of families.
According to US Census figures, Sapulpa’s population of 21,195 live with 2.61 people per household. That’s family living and that means a variety of homes and lifestyle choices within its borders.
As a suburb of Tulsa, Sapulpa can provide a wide range of affordable living opportunities while still being conveniently located in the Tulsa Metroplex. The historic downtown corridor offers homes from the time of Oklahoma’s oil boom as well as the post-war housing boom of the 1950s.

The Central Technology Center (CTC) success story is datadriven: Ninety-four percent of its students were placed in the workforce or continued their education. Of those placed in the workforce, 73 percent were employed in jobs related to their career major. This created an annual economic impact of $28.3 million dollars.
In addition, education excellence is exemplified with 100 percent of Central Tech students joining student organizations.
Providing technical education leading to individual success, Central Tech collaborates with business and industry partners with career-focused instruction aligning the necessary credentials with high demand occupations in its district. Today, Central Tech serves more than 22,000 enrollments and provides customized training to nearly 400 companies. Indeed, Central Tech is designed to simultaneously serve both students and business/industry.
Training includes a wide array of safety classes with an emphasis on meeting the needs of industrial manufacturing for the oil and gas industry. Curriculum incorporates problem solving, critical thinking, and teamwork. Students complete their training by earning industry-recognized certification/ licensure to meet the needs of high-skill industry sectors.
Sapulpa residents are only minutes away from college classes on the West Campus of Tulsa Community College (TCC). Located on 51st Street off Highway 97, TCC’s West Campus is an integral part of the state’s largest community college—offering a variety of shortterm programs, certificates, and associate degrees. Many students begin their college careers at TCC with a goal of transferring to a four-year program. In addition to the West Campus, TCC has complementary facilities in northeast, downtown and southeast Tulsa, as well as in Jenks.
