knowable

When people are born, they know nothing. As they grow older, they begin to learn and explore. As they keep learning, they discover their interests. When people are interested, they seek after the knowable. The moment I first held a brush at six years old, I was enchanted. Since then, I haven’t put down my brush. I focused on art classes in high school and illustrated the school news. At that time, I knew that I was interested in a design career. I have degrees in visual communications and graphic design. From my perspective, learning is a lifelong process. Throughout my career, I will continue to explore and seek the knowable.

turn trash into treasure

OBJECTIVE

Create engaging and relevant solutions for a topic. Identify relevant audience, competitors and stakeholders. Create and implement a cohesive system of compelling visual elements in a variety of media. APPROACH

Inspire as many people as possible to upcycle. Workshops connect the community to better foster collective power to create an upcycling movement. Engage people around the importance of topics related to upcycling. Use social media to show the versatility and breadth possible in upcycling design, sell upcycled products to support the project, and share ideas about how to upcycle. By reimagining, repurposing and

01

reusing, trash can turn into treasure.

Type Systems YEAR

Spring 2017

climate change is a reality

OBJECTIVE

Challenge basic principles of typography and explore innovative ways to communicate with text and image through making a book. Create a visual system for the book. APPROACH

The book topic is climate change. The purpose is to let people know climate change is a reality, based on four factors: evidence, carbon dioxide, temperature, and sea level. I used justified typesetting to express the seriousness of the topic. Yellow and red warn people about protecting the environment.

music makes life better

OBJECTIVE

Use experimental t ypography to translate a poem in an unknown language. Through exploring dif ferent forms of translation, apply process drawings in an appropriate way for this project titled “Translations . Use these elements to design a system for an event. APPROACH

I applied lines and bars that I explored from the poem to the music festival identit y. The Music Art Festival features music of many nationalities and cultures. It is located at Music Concourse in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. I used lines to create the shape of the building, and the color palette was inspired by the different environments surrounding the

03

building: sky, trees, stones, and weather.

Type Experiments YEAR

Fall 2017

typography is an art

OBJECTIVE

Explore typographic form in a new way via dreams. The dream state can be a terrific tool for generating unexpected results within a system. As varied as they are, dreams seem to require some form of logic, even if it is wholly contained within the dreamed world. APPROACH

Through exploring typography in a dream state, I came up with a movie called Dark Escape. The movie trailer presents a feeling of being trapped in the dark, and a hope of escape using limited materials, like fire, light, and water. A set of three posters used experimental type for the movie title reflecting the theme of the movie.

violin music is elegant

OBJECTIVE

Choose a storefront sign to redesign, showing universal design principles, communication theory and critical skills. Use fluency in visual language to create meaning and understanding from the complex world of information that surrounds us. APPROACH

I chose the sign Violin Tutor with a simple and legible wordmark. I collected and created written content to build a visual creative brief, personas, mood boards and protot ype deliverables. I chose geometric shapes to reflect music notes. To at tract the target market of young people, I used various bright colors to show a lively and dynamic feeling.
