STAY

WITH THINGS

W

THAT WORK you are going to get out of that product. The minimal shoes last about 200 to 300 miles.

e have just celebrated our 15th anniversary at the Running Center and want to say thank you to the thousands of patrons who have visited our store and kept us in business all these years. Over my 15 years as a running store owner and 25 years of being a sales rep for athletic companies, I have not only gotten older but have seen a lot products come and go. We have seen companies introduce rocker shoes and barefoot shoes, both of which are now paying millions of dollars of fines from lawsuits filed by the consumers of these products. We have also seen companies like Brooks celebrate its 100 birthday and become a top selling brand in running specialty stores with no lawsuits. Good companies are built on a good reputation and taking care of their customers. I specifically mention Brooks because all of their energy as a company is directed at making quality running and walking shoes.

Most running shoe companies introduce their new neutral model (for people with higher arches) updates in the spring of the year and new model updates of the stability shoes (for people with flatter feet) in the fall or winter of the year. Color updates can often be seen six months after the individual model update. If you have been shopping for running shoes lately you have probably noticed price increases in the new updates. The top selling brands now range from $100 to $170. This investment in running shoes that wear out with six months of regular use should make you become a more critical thinker when purchasing running shoes. The top selling models from Brooks, Asics, Nike, Saucony and other well known companies that make running shoes offer a great selection of footwear for any type of foot and will give you your money’s worth in comfort and durability.

We have seen a lot of shoes being introduced with the advent of the minimalist running craze. Most of the hype of these very minimalists shoes has died down and the consumer wants to get some real value for the $100 or more they spend for running footwear. Unless these new companies have a lot of financial backing, most will not be around in a year or two. If you want to try some minimalists shoes, I would recommend the Brooks Pure shoes, Saucony Kinvara or the Altra shoes. All of these are top quality shoes and will give you either a zero drop shoe or a very light shoe, and in some cases both. Remember though the lighter the shoe, the less mileage

We are all a community of athletes who want to enjoy our chosen activity to the fullest whether it be walking, running or doing triathlons. Support you local community businesses that sell and service reliable products and give you knowledge and support of what you like to do. These local businesses benefit the community and help it grow by supporting healthy events and providing you the opportunity to have the best products.

Take a Runcation to the ‘Burg Fall marathon training season is upon us. Some of us are creatures of habit, preferring to run the same route each week, others like to change it up a bit and try something new. If you have not had a chance to run in St. Pete, you are missing out on some fantastic routes. A short, 15 minute drive from Clearwater, and just a jaunt over the bridge from Tampa, lies this peninsula within a peninsula. A vibrant city gaining world-wide attention as an art gallery and museum lover’s haven, brimming with locally owned businesses, eclectic restaurants and hip craft breweries. St. Petersburg is fast becoming an outdoor fitness Mecca. Already a cyclist’s, triathlete’s, and boot camp enthusiast’s playground, runners too, can find many safe, intriguing places to pass the miles. Water view routes are found along the bay to the east and the gulf to the west, and there are several well-maintained trails and parks in between. The following allow you to get a close, personal view of the highlights of a city who’s catching the eye of the world traveler. Our first stop, a 10.4 mile section of the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail stretching from one end of St. Petersburg to the other. This multi-use trail was created along an abandoned railroad, begins in downtown St. Pete, and ends in Tarpon Springs. St. Pete runners will want to begin at the 8.0 mark, at 22nd Ave. and 69th St. North, or further northeast up the trail. Here, three overpasses await to be conquered between Tyrone Blvd. and Seminole Blvd. They provide excellent “hills” on Florida’s coastal training ground. Water fountains are few and far between, so be sure to bring a water bottle or belt to stay hydrated. As an added bonus, you can still find flat, mile long stretches of asphalt, making it a great trail for speed work. Looking for more mileage? Keep running beyond St. Pete into upper Pinellas County. If you want to pound pavement on the gulf side, take I-275 to the Pinellas Bayway exit. At this point, you have several choices. You can pay the $5 toll and run the Fort DeSoto Beach trail, or you can continue toward St. Pete Beach. Fort DeSoto is on the list of Dr. Beaches’ America’s Top 10 Beaches each year. For seven miles, you can follow a multipurpose trail through wide open spaces, dotted with mangroves and sea grape, catch a glimpse of an 1889 Army Fort established by Robert E. Lee, and find relief from the sun under the occasional section of Australian pines. A flat mix of dirt trail, hard packed sand, and miles of winding sidewalks, (while on the look out to spot as many species of birds and other critters as you can), will help you forget you’re even running. A favorite nature lovers’ trail, where you can wander and take in the beauty of old Florida, the way nature intended. Without turning toward Fort DeSoto, you have another option for a little “hill” training. Early morning runners take the sidewalk trail on the south side of the roadway, which brings them over the newly built Pinellas Bayway Bridge. Don’t underestimate this short bridge. Quick, steep elevation challenges even our Northern running friends. Hit it at the right time, and you’ll have spectacular views of the sunrise. Awaiting you on the other side is a huge castle, famous for its bubblegum pink exterior, the Lowes Don Cesar hotel. This favorite romping place of Al Capone, was built in 1928, served as a military hospital and Veterans Administration building from 1942 until 1967, and reopened as a historically important hotel in 1973. Turn left on Gulf Blvd. and you will arrive in Pass-a-Grille, another beach named one the best in America for its white, powdery sand. Travel the Intercoastal south, around the bend to the southern- most point of Pinellas county, and then head back on the beach side via Pass-a-Grille Way. You’ll pass historic 8th Avenue shops, the Gulf Beaches Museum, and some of the best spots to sunbathe anywhere in Florida. No high rise hotels here, just quaint motels offering peace and quiet to the small, beach community loving traveler. Continue north, turn west and finish with a second trip over the bridge. If you reverse this route and begin on the beach side, you can end your run with a dip in the gulf. The inviting blue-green ocean is sure to cool down any hot body. In downtown St. Pete, there’s plenty of cut-throughs for shorter runs or opportunities for extension if you want to push yourself, but whether its a one

Your Summer Running Guidelines By Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, LMT, C.PED, BOCPED

As summer in Florida gets into full swing, runners and walkers begin to experience the limitations that the heat can put on their training. We not only have the sub-tropical sun to deal with, but humidity levels that rival a steam room. Our body’s coping mechanism is extremely efficient, but depending on our fitness level and training regimen, it has its limitations. We cannot train as hard or as long as we did just a couple of months ago because the ‘heat factor’ (radiant, temperature, and humidity) has just thrown another major obstacle in front of us. We get hotter, perspire more, expend more energy and tire more quickly. This can be especially frustrating for the more serious runner who is demanding more and more from his or her training. If this runner is to maintain or elevate his/her training to its highest level during the summer, the risk of overtraining and possibly burnout may occur well before their intended peak. So, what’s going on? To put it simply, radiant heat from our much more intense summer sun, the ambient heat from the air and objects around us, and our fierce humidity all play major roles in challenging our body’s ability to cool itself. Our physiology is very efficient, in most cases, to handle a reasonable amount of heat. Those who perspire cope much better than those who perspire little or not at all. In a nutshell, we are constantly producing heat, which must be managed. The more we do physically, the more heat we produce. The cooler our outside environment, the easier it is to move this heat out into it. The warmer our outside environment, the tougher for us to force this unwanted heat into it. The body’s cooling process is through evaporation. Optimally, the more we perspire the more evaporation takes place and the cooler we can stay. Our physiological processes are trying to maintain our temperature at 98.6 degrees. As we heat up, our heart begins to work harder, pumping more and more blood to our skin and extremities where evaporation and cooling is occurring. The rest of the body welcomes this cooler blood to maintain optimal operating temperature. But the ‘heat factor’ can really slow this process down and put added stresses on our body systems, especially the heart. We have to work harder. Aside from the muscular and cardiovascular event that running is, our body has the compounding chore of cooling itself to maintain an optimal operating temperature. This added workload is the primary reason our performance is substantially reduced during the summer. Hydration is of utmost importance. It offers ample resources of fluid to keep the cooling, evaporation process working as well as keeping all other functions of the body in proper working order. Replacing electrolytes is also very important, both during and just after activity. Energy drinks and gels make this an easier task. There is also another factor to help us eliminate all of this excess heat. Fortunately, running companies and sock companies are producing and promoting apparel with synthetic fibers that do not hinder the evaporation process. Some actually enhance it and reduce the workload on the heart. Summer running will also take a toll on your most important equipment – your running shoes. In the heat and humidity of summer, an inordinate amount of stress can challenge even the best of running shoes. These culprits include excessive perspiration, higher ambient temperatures and scorching running surface temperatures. Even though the materials in your shoes are synthetic and will not absorb moisture, moisture is held between the fibers in every part of your shoes’ uppers, including the sockliner. When wet, it takes about 48 hours for your shoes to completely dry in a fairly well ventilated area. This can be sped up a bit if additional air circulation is added. Examples would be in placing your shoes, sockliner removed, overnight at the bottom of your refrigerator, under a fan, or in front of your home air conditioner’s intake vent. Stuffing them initially with an absorbent hand towel for a half-hour or so will cut down on drying time. Your running shoes’ life and protection features are also greatly reduced when they are not allowed to dry before subsequent wearing. While wet, the uppers may relax a bit and begin to not fit as well, compromising stability and foot position, which can lead to blisters and other foot and leg issues. The longer your shoes stay wet, the more time bacteria and fungus have to breed and deposit millions of dead organisms. These dead creatures are actually what cause that all-too-familiar and pungent foot odor. As these organisms multiply, they also keep filling in the gaps of your upper, compromising the breathability of the shoe. This is compounded by perspiration-salt residue left behind after each run. Salt causes that stiff feeling in the upper. While running, this upper-clogging bacteria/fungus/salt combination causes the temperatures inside to go up resulting in hotter feet and even more sweating. It’s a never-ending cycle, which gets worse with each wearing. On average, a new shoe’s midsole takes approximately 24 hours to return to its original, most functional and protective shape. Compound this with higher ambient, or outside temperatures and you can see how a midsole’s performance and life can be affected. The higher the temperature, the softer it becomes. This softer midsole is less stable, less resilient, and ultimately, wears out sooner. You may not notice it or you may be just chalking it up to summer running, but this has a considerable effect on excessive motion and energy output leading to premature muscle fatigue and possible injury. Hot running surfaces will cause additional wear on your outsoles. You may notice your shoes not wearing as well in summer, especially if you have a tendency to scrape or pivot for some reason during heel-strike or toe-off. Your outsoles are slowly “melting” on a molecular level. Expect even more wear if running in the heat of the day. Summer running shoe do’s and don’ts: If running every day, alternate two pairs especially during the summer. This will extend the life of both. If wearing one pair, do plan to replace them sooner. Don’t leave your running shoes in your car during the day. The glues used in running shoes are heat-activated and excessive temperatures will heat-“deactivate” them. Midsoles are also known to shrink in high enough temperatures experienced inside a closed car. If you must leave your shoes in your car, put them in an insulated container with a couple of good-sized bars of frozen “blue-ice”. This will also make a soothing first few steps when you put them on. Do rinse your shoes with fresh water periodically and air dry. This will help eliminate shoe clogging perspiration-salt and bacteria. Add some warm, soapy water and a brush to even do a better job. Then air dry after a good rinse. Do wear thicker, moisture-managing socks if you don’t already. They will help insulate your feet from higher surface temperatures and help to keep them drier, preventing additional blister-causing shearing forces caused by wetter feet. Thicker socks will also hold substantially more bacteria and salt before they can be transferred into your running shoe’s shoe upper. Just don’t wear them two days in a row. Following these guidelines should help make your summer running more bearable and enjoyable, as well as costing you less, in the long run.

THINGS TO DO TO KEEP RIDING FROM BECOMING WORK

Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for in excess of thirty years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and served the Florida Region on the National Board of Directors for USATriathlon for six years, and is the Past President of that Organization. He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.

July/August

Most of us who ride bikes regularly find we hit a tough patch where we start dreading getting up early to ride; we stop looking forward to a ride; and, yet, once we are on the bike, find benefit and enjoyment. Since I’ve been riding for more than thirty five years, I find there are times when it’s good to “mix it up” with your ride to break the monotony in order to keep the process enjoyable. We all know of the health benefits of riding, including the psychological benefit of stress relief, improving self image, and the like. But what can you do to make changes to reinvigorate the process? Here are some suggestions: 1. Don’t always do the same ride, the same time of day, with the same people. Changing the route, who you ride with, and even what time of day you ride can make the process new again. 2. Take your computer off your bike; remove your heart rate monitor, and other high tech gear, and just listen to your body to judge your comfort level. Take the pressure off the process. 3. Ride a different bike; and, by this, I mean not just a different make, but a differently configured bike. For example, how many “roadies” have taken a break and ridden a “townie” for a day at the beach, or in your downtown area, stopping to enjoy the Saturday morning market; riding with your non driven friend, wife, husband, significant other who does not live and breathe cycling? It’s totally different from riding your tri or road bike; you may actually have fun not worrying about how fast you are going, how many miles you’ve covered, and who you beat in the final sprint for a change. Don’t buy that bike, rent it or borrow from a friend. A beach cruiser or even a mountain bike can be substituted with the same result. 4. Be willing to take a break; perhaps a week or two away from cycling altogether. Absence can be a great way to rekindle your desire to ride; and your appreciation of being able to. Just ask anyone who has had to wait to heal from an injury how much riding can be missed, and how pleasing being able to get back on the bike can be. If riding feels like a job; it’s time to take a break. Riding, like all exercise, should be a lifetime activity. It’s important to ration your efforts so you don’t burn out. Many people I’ve ridden with over the years have burnt out; and they are the worse for it. Ride smart, ride safe, and mix up your riding so it remains a part of your life’s activities. INJURED ATHLETES KNOW YOUR FORMULA FOR HEALING In simple terms, healing tissue can be broken down to 4 simple components: 1. Healing Time (HT) 2. Oxygen uptake (O2) 3. Energy (ATP) production 4. Vasodilatation (VD) (healing properties) Below is a formula Physical Chiropractic utilized for healing time. Healing Time (HT) = _____1____ O2+ATP+VD O2=1, ATP=1, VD=1

HT=__1___ 1+1+1

HT=__1__ 3

HT=.33

**Increase variables by 1** O2=2, ATP=2, VD=2

HT=__1__ 2+2+2

HT=__1__ 6

HT=.17

At Physical Chiropractic, healing time can be reduced by increasing oxygen uptake, ATP and vasodilatation with Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Therapy and Class IV Laser. 1. Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Therapy (HBOT) will increase O2 diffusion in the cell membrane and increase O2 uptake 2. Class IV Laser increases ATP production in mitochondria for cell repair 3. Class IV Laser excites Nitric Oxide for vessels to dilate. Mention this article and claim a complimentary consult for the use of HBOT and Class IV Laser.
