As any runner knows, an interruption in training can be a major set-back. Thank goodness I turned to Karen for help. KNOWLEDGE by Shin Splints The most common source of lower leg pain is shin splints: microscopic tares, strains and inflammation of soft tissue structures surrounding the shins. Shin splints often manifest after increasing training loads and when the wrong type of shoe or too old of a shoe is used for training. If you experience pain or tenderness along the shins during the beginning of runs and other workouts (or afterward) you may have shin splints.
Shin Splints BEST PRACTICES THAT CAN HELP 1. Decrease training mileage and intensity at least 50% for 1-2 weeks. Then slowly increase back in 10% weekly increases. 2. Perform a 10-minute ice-massage along your shins, 2-3 times daily. Fill a Dixie cup with water, freeze it, and tear the rim to create an ice massager that won’t freeze your fingers. Refreeze when done. 3. Gently stretch your calves and soleus several times a day. 4. Take a regular anti-inflammatory for up to two weeks. Be sure it is approved by your physician and agreeable with your stomach. 5. Perform toe lifts, while seated on a counter, using a weight suspended from your toes several times a day. Use a 5lb to 10lb weight or partially-full milk jug tied to a rope looped around your foot, and slowly lift it up and down, bending at the ankles. PURCHASES THAT MAY HELP 1. Wear supportive shoes that are correct for your biomechanics. Purchase from a specialty store like FITniche that can accurately assess your gait and match you to appropriate shoes. 2. Wear semi-rigid to rigid inserts in all your shoes to support the arches. Let a specialty store like FITniche guide you through the selection process. 3. Use a foam roller or self-massage device to regain elasticity in calves, soleus & arches. Find the correct product and get advice on how to use it at a specialty running store like FITniche. 4. Wear compression sleeves or socks when training.
OVERVIEW A common source of lower leg pain is commonly referred to as shin splints. Symptoms If you experience pain or tenderness along the shins during the beginning of runs (or afterwards), you may have shin splints. Treatment Disclaimer If you don't start to find relief from these suggestions, be sure to see a medical professional, as other more serious conditions, such as stress fractures, can exhibit same or similar symptoms, and only a trained medical professional can actually diagnose these types of medical conditions.
Join Club FITniche for just $30 and save $20 on ALL shoes for 2 years! Ask a crew member about additional benefits and details. www.FITniche.com

Tampa Bay Lightning Q & A Shoshanah Vaughn How long have you been playing ice hockey? I started very young, 6 years old. From then on, I played every year with friends from school. When I was 22, I started playing professionally. This is my 2nd year with The Tampa Bay Lightning.
On a Pathway to Faster Recovery: Interview with Hockey Player Jason Garrison
Awesome! So, how do you like your new home, Tampa? I like Tampa a lot! It’s a huge sports city with great community support! What is your main goal in regards to treatment? Keeping my body feeling the best it can and optimizing performance. Through the bumps and bruises throughout the season, it’s important to keep the body maintained! What injuries are you susceptible to as a hockey player? Similar to running, hips are a huge part of skating, so it’s a major focus for me. How does Dr. Rhee at Physical Chiropractic of Tampa Bay help in your performance? Dr. Rhee helps maintain my hip mobility throughout the season. ART (Active Release Techniques) lengthens my muscles and allows me to get full range with more flexibility and stability. Also, Cryotherapy helps too. I like the Cryo a lot! It flushes out my body and gives me energy. I would recommend to any athlete seeking better hip and leg movement to get the most out of their body to perform better! It’s never too late to familiarize yourself with your body’s strengths and needs.

Resources for insurance information vital to cyclists and triathletes
Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for in excess of thirty years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and served the Florida Region on the National Board of Directors for USATriathlon for six years, and is the Past President of that Organization. He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.
May/June
Periodically, I write about, plead, implore, cajole, and beg my fellow athletes to protect themselves in the event of a crash between you and your bicycle with a motor vehicle. Our roads are some of the most crowded in the country; we have some of the most inattentive (think texting, cell phones, make up, sandwich eating, book reading, etc) all seen by me on the roads, that goes on while we, on our defenseless bicycles, attempt to have an enjoyable and beneficial workout. I recently had the opportunity to speak about these issues at St. Petersburg Bicycle and Fitness, where my new Associate, Ray Gonzalez videoed the presentation. He has edited the hour talk into two separate much shorter videos that can be found on my website, www. bchfirm.com. The first is about general auto insurance issues, and the fact that you need to pay attention to your auto insurance coverages when riding your bike, because if/when you’re hit while riding, your own auto insurance comes directly into play. The second edited video is about your uninsured motorist’s coverage. There is this separate edit on UM because it is so vital to your protection on the road. UM is actually insurance you can buy that acts as liability coverage for the at fault driver who hit you (and who may have left the scene). Even if the driver stays, and has some liability insurance coverage, UM is also underinsured motorists coverage UIM, which means it adds to the liability amount the driver has should the value of your injury exceed the driver’s limits. Please feel free to go to my website the next time you are renewing your coverages, for a brief refresher on why you need to be responsible to protect yourself in the event of an injury accident, and how to do so. The website again is: www.bchfirm.com. Brian Harrington Past President, USATriathlon Board of Directors Race Announcer Attorney 49

Meet the Nike Zoom Pegasus 33, the latest entry into Nike’s longest-running running franchise. Unlike the fairly significant renovation between the Pegasus 31 and 32, the 33 is visually quite similar to its immediate predecessor. Engineered Mesh again provides the majority of the construction, while Dynamic Flywire is generously used in the sides, albeit a bit more concealed and integrated with the mesh skin than on the 32. Below, the Zoom Air-cushioned midsole looks to have seen some minor retooling, but by and large appears to be the same revered unit from the past model.

SOME MYTHS ABOUT SPORT DRINKS Myth: Energy drinks have “high” or “dangerous” amounts of caffeine. Fact: The vast majority of energy drinks consumed in the United States – including Monster, Red Bull, Rockstar, AMP, Full Throttle and NOS – have similar or lower levels of caffeine than home-brewed coffee which many Americans enjoy on a daily basis. And many contain about half the caffeine of a similarly-sized coffeehouse coffee. A 16 fluid ounce energy drink typically contains between 160 and 240 milligrams of caffeine, while the same size coffeehouse coffee contains around 300 to 330 milligrams. Moreover, caffeine has been safely consumed around the world for hundreds of years. Myth: With the recent growth of the energy drink category, Americans are getting dangerous amounts of caffeine in their diet. Fact: The FDA commissioned an in-depth analysis of caffeine consumption among the U.S. population in 2009, which was then updated in 2010. This report concludes that, despite the growth of energy drinks in the marketplace, the average amount of caffeine consumed by the adult U.S. population remains consistent with past FDA estimates – at approximately 300 milligrams of caffeine daily. The report also found that coffee and tea remain the primary source of caffeine in the American diet. Furthermore, that same report indicated that teens and young adults ages 14 to 21 years consume, on average, approximately one-third the amount of caffeine as people over 21 – about 100 milligrams per day – and that most of their caffeine consumption is from beverages other than energy drinks. Myth: Energy drinks aren’t regulated. Fact: Energy drinks, their ingredients and labeling are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)— even those that are labeled as a dietary supplement using a Supplement Facts panel, instead of a conventional food using a Nutrition Facts panel. And, as with most consumer products, energy drink advertising is subject to oversight from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Myth: There’s no way for a consumer to know how much caffeine is in an energy drink. Fact: There are several ways to find out exactly how much caffeine is in an energy drink. Most mainstream energy drinks voluntarily list the total amount of caffeine from all sources right on the label. In addition, this information is readily available on company or product websites, as well as through their toll-free numbers. Myth: Energy drinks are a new product about which too little is known. Fact: Energy drinks have been enjoyed safely by millions of people around the world for more than 25 years, and in the United States for more than 15 years. © 2016 American Beverage Association

HOT WEATHER RUNNING TIPS
Avoid dehydration! You can lose between 6 and 12 oz. of fluid for every 20 minutes of running. Therefore it is important to pre-hydrate (10–15 oz. of fluid 10 to 15 minutes prior to running) and drink fluids every 20–30 minutes along your running route. To determine if you are hydrating properly, weigh yourself before and after running. You should have drunk one pint of fluid for every pound you’re missing. Indications that you are running while dehydrated are a persistent elevated pulse after finishing your run and dark yellow urine. Keep in mind that thirst is not an adequate indicator of dehydration.
Visit Gatorade Endurance’s site. You will find great tools for developing a hydration strategy.
Avoid running outside if the heat is above 98.6 degrees and the humidity is above 70-80%. While running, the body temperature is regulated by the process of sweat evaporating off of the skin. If the humidity in the air is so high that it prevents the process of evaporation of sweat from the skin, you can quickly overheat and literally cook your insides from an elevated body temperature. Check your local weather and humidity level.
When running, if you become dizzy, nauseated, have the chills, or cease to sweat…. STOP RUNNING, find shade, and drink water or a fluid replacement drink such as Gatorade Endurance. If you do not feel better, get help. Heatstroke occurs when the body fails to regulate its own temperature, and the body temperature continues to rise. Symptoms of heatstroke include mental changes (such as confusion, delirium, or unconsciousness) and skin that is red, hot, and dry, even under the armpits. Heatstroke is a life-threatening medical emergency, requiring emergency medical treatment.
Run in the shade whenever possible and avoid direct sunlight and blacktop. When you are going to be exposed to the intense summer rays of the sun, apply at least 15 spf sunscreen and wear protective eyewear that filters out UVA and UVB rays. Consider wearing a visor that will shade your eyes and skin but will allow heat to transfer off the top of your head.
If you have heart or respiratory problems or you are on any medications, consult your doctor about running in the heat. In some cases it may be in your best interests to run indoors. If you have a history of heatstroke/illness, run with extreme caution.
Children should run in the morning or late afternoon hours, but should avoid the peak heat of the day to prevent heat related illnesses. It is especially important to keep children hydrated while running and playing outdoors in the heat.
Do wear light colored breathable clothing. Do not wear long sleeves or long pants or sweat suits. Purposefully running in sweat suits hot days to lose water weight is dangerous!
Plan your route so you can refill water bottles or find drinking fountains. City parks, local merchants, and restaurants are all good points to incorporate on your route during hot weather running. Be sure to tell someone where you are running how long you think you will gone, and carry identification. Stay hydrated, cool, and safe this summer! The Road Runners Club of America

Written by USAT Triathlon Coach Celia Dubey Many times people injure themselves because they read an article on running form, or a person who is trying help them tells them how they “should” run. So the person with good intentions to become a better runner tries to "correct" their form (usually way too soon with way too many miles) and what they don't realize is that their body many times has developed over time in response to their specific run gate & form so if one tries to change something it can often cause an injury or be inefficient for their own body.
So while in pursuit of trying to run "correctly" now they cause an injury. Many
times people come to me and ask me to correct their form but when one has been running for 40 some years that can be quite risky. If I find someone lacking efficiency or certainly if someone is running in pain my approach is to GRADUALLY change their form or gate with my 10/2/10 method. I instruct the runner to run on a treadmill in front of a mirror for 10 minutes, 2 times a day, for 10 days in a row. This mirror running is effective so the person can make sure they are observing themselves implementing their new form. The short 10 minute duration is key so they don't cause an injury and this way they can keep their focus on the new form. And the 2 times a day for 10 consecutive days helps them build that muscle memory for the new form. I am constantly preaching to not correct things that are not broken and how important it is to not “correct” things too quickly..... This goes for swimming and ones fit on their bike as well. Lynn Gray, B.A., M.S. RRCA certified run coach Ratio Running vs. the Continual Run I am a long distance runner, race director, running coach, and an advocate for the walk/run ratio movement. This article will discuss both the continual runner or shall I say a “non-stop” runner and the Walk/Run – ratio runner participant. Much of the content is through the lens of seasoned runners, ratio runners, and race directors. The simplistic points are most relevant to the long distance event participant; a half marathon to marathon distance. As a running coach: The beginner participant. It may take a year or more for the beginner walk/runner to physiologically adapt to impact. Ratio running allows the body to gradually adapt to the many muscular changes throughout the body. Those who have pre-existing conditions – many of us have conditions which warrant a walk break due to breathing issues such as asthma, chronic muscular/skeleton pain. We live in Florida! Enough said; the walk/run ratio is practiced by many in Florida due to the heat. Pure and simple; our walk breaks cool us down. Camaraderie – girls “just want to have fun”. Men, women, and kids should enjoy the running movement. There is less stress aerobically when one mixes running with lots of walking breaks. Not to mention, additional talk time. As a continual runner: Want a personal best? Hmm. You will compromise leg strength by exchanging continual running to continual walk breaks. Running with respect to the body mechanics means one leg alternates with the other off the ground increasing muscular leg strength and power as a result. Distance running takes much leg strength and the continual “muscle load” of running increases overall endurance. Remember the adage; to become a good runner – you must run. Aerobic potential – Lessening the intake of oxygen or “oxygen load” will decrease lung capacity. Walking does allow us to breathe easier. Meaning, the oxygen load placed on the lungs while walking is not as demanding as while running. Continual walks will not notably increase lung capacity, a factor essential for faster race performance. Foot strike change - Walking changes your foot strike to more heel to toe vs. on the forefoot while running. This switching strike delays leg fatigue and reduces injuries. However for increased performance try hill training; gain up and down muscles along with your longer stride muscles. Same result of varying the foot strike; but you become a stronger runner. the time…running slower but lifting the leg slightly higher. (Note: Faster course times are generally found on rolling hills vs. flat terrain.) The muscles like continuity of movement. Stopping and starting result in continual muscle contraction and extension causing possible muscle cramping. This unfortunate outcome can be experienced on a really cold or hot day during a long run or race. Many of us realize how easily muscles can begin to cramp, stiffen, and lose their elasticity…especially in the calves for men and hamstrings for women. Mental calmness – Many of us run to ease the daily stresses of life. The constant steady breathing of an even paced effort will give a continual mantra of inhale, step, step, step, exhale…on it goes. Runners claim the resulting “runners high” as a huge positive outcome of continual aerobic movement. Stay in “the zone” - Keeping mental track of stopping and starting is a lot of work mentally; with or without a watch/timer. Breaking up long runs is an effective strategy; especially as the later miles bring fatigue to the legs and the mind. However, why invite mental tiredness sooner than necessary, and with such frequency?
As a race director: We love walk/runners! They are a growing demographic and give us higher race numbers. Keep on coming. Share the road. Ratio runners are increasingly populating race events; especially in pace groups. Consequently, the safety of the runners is a point of contention. Many pace groups actually take the entire width of road. Together with “width running pace groups” plus stopping and starting, the steady runner loses their planned pace and sadly can get tripped. Running etiquette is not unlike car traffic. Stay on the right side of the road; and if stopping totally, move off the road/terrain. Don’t expect the runner to continually move out of your way; and please keep adequate distance with them if the road/terrain narrows. Arrive early to our events. Many walk/runners are beginners and do not realize that parking, getting gear arranged, picking up the event number, using the restroom, etc. take time. Arrive at least one hour or more before the race begins Lynn Gray, B.A., M.S., RRCA coach, Walk to Run © trainer, author Conquering the Marathon, Fit and Faster and Cardio Walking for Weight Loss, contributor to Runner’s World magazine Owner of Take…The First Step.
