Running your first Gasparilla… I always loved this race as it's a representation of our city. I always loved the 15k as that was always considered the great race… While you have 4 different options now days for the various distances. The 15k is a unique event and not contested everywhere like 5,8, or 10k. My first experience with Gasparilla was right after I moved to fort Myers, FL during my Jr. year of high school. It was a massive race, hot as can be that day and boy it went out fast. You have to remember all the best runners in the world used to come down here for it. I finished 128th place and ran 52:40 or so as 17 years old kid. Anyway that was with high school mileage and training for the mile and 2 miles. If you are looking for a signature race, try the 15k this year. You have plenty of time to train for it. Really you can train like you would for a 10k with doing a long run up to 10-12 miles. I would recommend learning to run bayshore so you learn to deal with the hardest thing, seeing the finish line from miles away. Bayshore is a beautiful place, but off course we take it for granted since it’s here and we see or run it every day. I suggest change the scenery by running in different places some days and return to bayshore to do some mild speed simulation work. You can by running the first mile on the side walk off course easy, then start with a little fartlek of maybe 8-10 x 1 min. faster pace and 1 min. jog between to get some distance. Next time you do maybe 5-6 x 2 min. fast w/1 min. jog. Build up one workout a week, and make sure you build up your long run. Again if you are only doing 5 miles now add 1 mile every two weeks, then on the opposite week run a few miles at a faster pace at the end of your longer runs. Embrace the challenge, enjoy the race and all the glory that come with a city wide event. Make sure you go out slowly, and always drink a little of water thru the water stations (walk thru them if you have to). Here are some tips to make this a better experience. First write your name on your number people will yell at when you go by. Next always smile and high five people along the route and you will have a great experience out there. THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER BODY ALIGNMENT GENE ULISHNEY, BS HPE, CPED, BOCPED

When it comes to the human body, proper alignment allows it to function optimally and with as little wear and tear as possible. When something acts on the body to throw alignment off, it does a great job of adapting. When this added stress occurs repeatedly, over extended periods of time, the affected area begins to show signs of premature wear and tear but goes largely unnoticed. That is, until pain sets in. We typically call this gradual onset of pain an “overuse” injury. Most think it is something that just happens because of a particular repetitive activity and expect that it eventually will happen - but hoping, later than sooner. In reality, our bodies are meant to last a lifetime. When working properly, it will take a very long time to experience excess wear. As a rule, overuse injuries are really caused by overusing a part or parts of the body the wrong way, over and over again - a series of micro-traumas caused by repetitive movement to one or more mis-aligned joints and bones. Besides bone fractures and eventually, cartilage wear, pain is initially mostly relegated to tendon attachments, muscles, and ligaments which are acting together and working overtime to help re-align everything with each step. The earlier a person understands the importance of proper alignment and strives to maintain it, the longer he or she can perform or live without overuse pain, or eventually, surgeries such as back and knee or hip replacements. A good running store, with a properly trained staff, should be your initial consideration. Most alignment issues begin at the feet and there are shoes, foot supports and socks that can help maintain the body in its most optimal, aligned, and functional position. Absence of pain is success. Experiencing pain means a change is needed. For structural or muscle imbalances, an evaluation visit to your local physical therapist, podiatrist, pedorthist, chiropractor or massage therapist may also be very helpful to get or help keep you aligned. Keep in mind though, with the exception of podiatrists and pedorthists, what they may be trying to fix could be originating with your feet. Any abnormal movement at ground level triggers an adaptation response in multiple joints all the way up through your neck. In summary, any mis-alignment is not good. Some runners feel (and are sometimes told) that they can run in anything “because I only do a couple of miles, three times a week”. Why run or walk any number of miles the wrong way if you don’t have to? A little wear here, a little tear there - what happens if you end up needing that body for 100 years? November/December

Fall, 2016 Important Insurance Information for all Cyclists/Triathletes

Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for in excess of thirty years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and served the Florida Region on the National Board of Directors for USATriathlon for six years, and is the Past President of that Organization. He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.

Those of you who have read this column over that past two years know I periodically provide you all information that is imperative to understand and act on in order to be properly insured in the event while training on your bicycle, or running, you are struck and injured by a motor vehicle. At the risk of rehashing information, I strongly believe this is so important for you and your loved ones, that I’m highlighting the automobile insurance coverages that are crucial to understand. Should any of this information confuse you, please feel free to call me. I’ll be happy to discuss and clarify where needed. First, the MOST IMPORTANT COVERAGE FOR YOU: UNINSURED MOTORIST’S COVERAGE. Why: because if you are struck and suffer injury as a result of a negligent driver, your UM coverage is the best way to insure you have coverage to look to for your injury loss. Most irresponsible drivers are also irresponsible about carrying adequate liability insurance on their vehicle. This should be no surprise: why should we expect an irresponsible driver to be responsible about insurance? We shouldn’t. UM acts as liability coverage for the at fault driver, guaranteeing that you have insurance against which to make a claim. Unfortunately, in many motor vehicle/bicycle or motor vehicle/pedestrian/ jogger accidents, the vehicle doesn’t stop, making your case one involving what is referred to as a phantom vehicle. Your UM will still act as liability coverage even if no one knows the true identity of the driver. If you have no um in a hit and run incident, you will be out of luck. Second, a few years ago the Florida Legislature, heavily influenced by insurance company lobbyists, changed the Personal Injury Protection (PIP), or no fault portion of your coverage, by requiring you to be seen/treated and having an emergency medical condition (EMC) declared within fourteen days of the date of your accident in order to have the $10,000 of medical/no fault benefits available for you. Even though you pay a premium for $10,000, if after your accident, you don’t have an appropriate entity declare an EMC, then they will only pay $2,500 for your bills. And, oh, by the way, they don’t refund the premium for $10,000 worth of coverage. As a result, I’ve had to change my advice to my athlete clients. Prior to this amendment to the law, most of my athletes would say if they still hurt in two or three weeks, then they’d go for treatment. Now, you no longer have that luxury, and must immediately make a medical record that qualifies under the PIP statute. Know and understand that even when you have health insurance, you cannot elect whether to use your health insurance rather than involve your auto policy; it’s not your choice. Rather, the law mandates when in an accident with a motor vehicle (notice I have never said you have to be IN your vehicle, just in an accident INVOLVING a motor vehicle) your PIP stands first in line, and your health insurance only starts once PIP has been exhausted. Sound confusing? I know it is. But what’s not confusing is the absolute need for you to carry as much UM coverage as your budget allow, when you’re putting yourself at risk on some of the busiest roads in our country. Lastly, don’t ever let anyone tell you UM is not necessary as long as you have health insurance. UM is much more expansive than health insurance, and will pay you for your loss of quality of life, loss of earnings and future earning capacity, just to name a couple. Please tear out this article and put it with your auto insurance information, so you can refer to it when you next renew your policy. Be safe out there.

THE 2nd ANNUAL VIKING XC CHALLENGE 5K RUN AND 1 MILE FUN RUN/WALK

DATE: November 12, 2016 TIME: 8:00 AM (5K) 9:00 AM (Mile) LOCATION: Northeast High School (Fields behind the baseball stadium) This is a fundraiser to support the Cross Country team at Northeast High School. Proceeds of the race will benefit the team and provide them with funds to take care of expenses that are self-funded such as transportation, race entry fees, team shirts, and team awards. The race course will be a true Cross Country experience and will start in the grass field between Northeast High and Sexton Elementary (next to the baseball fields). T-shirts: T-shirts will be available to pre-registered runners only. Awards: We will have an awards ceremony following the Mile Fun Run/Walk. Course Information: The course will be a true cross country experience and runners will not be crossing asphalt or concrete! This is a challenging course with a couple of small hills.
