As any runner knows, an interruption in training can be a major set-back. Thank goodness I turned to Karen for help. In a single therapy session, she was able to not only alleviate the pain, it was as if the injury never occurred." —Karen Collins, Licensed Massage Therapist

KNOWLEDGE by Plantar Fasciitis: A Pain in the Heel PF is the #1 foot injury suffered by walkers and runners worldwide. It is an insidious injury that doesn’t usually feel debilitating at first. As a result, many people ignore it for quite a while before seeking treatment. The right shoes, inserts and sensible training regimens can prevent and even help heal PF, if you have it. But if you’ve been suffering from PF for a long time, it can take an equally long time to recover—sometimes 18 months or longer. Don’t give up!

BEST PRACTICES THAT CAN HELP: 1. Don't walk barefoot on hard floors! 2. Don't wear typical flip-flops or other unsupportive shoes or flats. 3. Gently pull on your toes and knead your arch with your thumbs for a few moments before getting out of bed each morning. 4. Slip into running shoes immediately upon getting out of bed. 5. Roll a frozen water bottle under your arch for 5-10 minutes, 2-3 times daily. 6. Stand barefoot on one leg, balancing on the injured foot for up to 1 minute 1-2 times a day. Gradually increase time. Put a finger on the wall to help with balance if needed. 7. Take a regular anti-inflammatory for up to two weeks. Be sure it is approved by your physician and agreeable with your stomach. 8. Significantly reduce or stop your running or walking regimen for up to two weeks while doing the above. Then use the FITniche Comeback Plan to return to your normal training regimen. 9. Wear supportive shoes that are correct for your biomechanics. Purchase from a specialty store, like FITniche, that can match shoes correctly to your gait and foot structure. 10. Wear semi-rigid to rigid inserts in all your shoes to support the arches. Again, let a specialty store like FITniche guide you through the selection process. 11. Use a foam roller or other self-massage device to regain elasticity in calves & arches, as both share the same insertion point at the base of the heel. 12. Sleep in a night splint, or at least un-tuck your sheets and hang your foot off the bed, so healing occurs in the stretched position.

OVERVIEW A common source of heel pain is plantar fasciitis: a small tear, strain or inflammation of the tissue that makes up your arch. Symptoms If you experience a sharp, stabbing pain in the heel or arch first thing in the morning, at the beginning of runs and other workouts, or after sitting for long periods of time, you may have plantar fasciitis. Treatment Disclaimer If you don't start to find relief from these suggestions within a couple weeks, be sure to see a medical professional, as other more serious conditions can exhibit same or similar symptoms, and only a trained medical professional can actually diagnose conditions such as plantar fasciitis.

Join Club FITniche for just $30 and save $20 on ALL shoes for 2 years! Ask a crew member about additional benefits and details.

WILL RUNNING INJURIES EVER BE ELIMINATED? The short answer is probably not, but we can come close. The body is far too complicated, with today’s technological limitations, to address and perfectly maintain the preferred and safest path of movement for every individual. This optimal individual path of movement maintains an alignment which allows all joint structures of the body, and their surrounding tissues, to function with the least amount of stress. Less stress means less pain and injury. On the bright side, fortunately, there are well-thought-out products, namely, certain shoes, orthotics and socks that stand above the rest in helping to prevent and eliminate the vast majority of running-related pain and overuse injuries. Even though running shoes have an unprecedented amount of research and development behind them, very little time has been spent on their effect on injury. From all the latest and greatest books and research studies on how you should run, to what you should run in, to it doesn’t matter what you run in, are taken as gospel until a newer one comes out. Why? Because all the previous studies did not really prove anything at all. We still hear that running injury incidence has not improved since the ‘70s. The types of injuries may have changed, but the numbers have not. In working with runners “on the road” (or, “clinically speaking”, if you’re a technical person) for the past 40 years, I have found two top reasons responsible for running-related injuries, and they both reference shoes: 1.) Improper fit, due to the wrong size, shape, and/or stability level for the individual. 2.) Excess levers forcing the individual’s foot to adapt to the shoe and veer too much off of its safe and functional preferred path of movement, over and over again. Abnormal sole wear patterns and eventually pain will be evident with both improper fit and shoes not functioning properly to the individual’s needs. Address the above and I believe we can eliminate upwards of 90% of running injuries today. Generally speaking, I question “training errors” or “too much too soon” as major causes of running-related pain or injury. If the foot and body maintain proper alignment throughout gait, it stands to reason that the joints and their related tissues, such as tendon attachments and ligaments, will most likely not be sufficiently stressed to cause injury. Sure, the muscles involved may be overworked and get very sore, but that’s not a bad thing. It only makes them stronger. You can usually tell a better consumer product from another by its price. With running shoes, pricing is mostly all the same, so it is not a differentiator. One of the first articles that I wrote was “All Running Shoes Are Not Created Equal”. It went into the different philosophies that companies have while designing their lines, to sell shoes. Is it looks, some new “technology” that they can hang their hat on for a while, or is it a purposeful driven company attempting to make the most functional and safe products for the end user? I think that staying as close to nature as we can while keeping our feet protected from our hard and flat man-made surfaces, should offer our safest solutions. I have hundreds of pictures of feet in sand and have not yet found one to overpronate or oversupinate, as we know it. I have used them for years in all of my seminars and clinics. Nature works best. The future of safe running is in emulating the movements and shapes of the feet and adapting them to modern surfaces. In this regard, three companies are exceptional in their own categories and are worth a try: Brooks – the #1 selling footwear brand in running specialty. Brooks is obsessed with getting as close to nature as possible, reducing levers as much as possible and making shoes as adaptable as possible to each and every runner, for a safer and more enjoyable running experience. Ask to be fitted in Brooks if you have any persistent running pain. Experia – the #1 selling single pair sock in the industry. Experia is the only sock anatomically engineered with strategically-placed cushioned and protective pads in the high pressure areas of the heel and ball-of-the-foot, along with exclusive, ultra-thin ventilation panels for dry/moist air exchange, keeping the foot cooler, drier and healthier. Spenco Total Support Orthotics – the most natural orthotic on the market (no hard bump that braces, restricts and weakens the foot). Total Supports allow natural foot movement very similar to walking or running barefoot on grass or the beach, where the arch is supported naturally. Also helps cut down on levers that a shoe can put on the foot. If you run, don’t expect to have pain. A combination of naturally functional products can keep you running pain-free. Cyclic 12 Review

Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for in excess of thirty years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and served the Florida Region on the National Board of Directors for USATriathlon for six years, and is the Past President of that Organization. He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.

September/October

Last month I reviewed the Cyclic6 rear facing light and camera. This month, I’m reviewing its counterpart for a front facing light and camera. This equipment has several additional advantages over the cyclic6. First, its housing is built like a piece of military hardware; it’s solid! Unlike the “6”, the “12” has bluetooth compatibility, so you can easily and immediately watch whats been videoed, make edits, post to social media, etc. A truly nice and important feature is the button, if when pushed, automatically saves a five minute before and five minute after chunk of video that cannot be automatically taped over. For example, if you witness an accident, you can be sure to save that piece of video. The light is 400 lumens, but appears brighter; has six separate adjustments, three strobe and three constant. The video quality is excellent, and the nighttime quality is outstanding. Another positive is the usb rechargeable battery that I have found gives me approximately four to six hours of use before recharging is necessary, using both light and video. You can turn off the light, giving even longer time between charging. The video always runs when the unit is on. Negatives: a bit costly, but I believe worth the price because of the quality; there’s a tiny green button on the top to show when operating, but that’s a disadvantage if you want to place the fixture on the bottom of your bars, since there’s no corresponding light on the bottom that faces up in that configuration. However geeky one may feel, it’s my belief that anything we cyclists can do to make us more visible to the motorist should be done. Strobe lights on, front and rear during daylight hours helps to keep us safe; solid lights, front and rear does the same during darkness. The video gives you wonderful evidence should you still have the misfortune of being struck by a motor vehicle. The cyclic 12 is a necessary part of your safety package. Brian Harrington Past President, USATriathlon Board of Directors Race Announcer Attorney 49

Voice in your head – I ask you take a moment and think to yourself - throughout the day what is it that you say to yourself. How do you speak to yourself? You know what I mean. During those quite times- you may be driving or waiting for something or someone -and you have that chatter in your head. It’s your inner voice speaking to you. What is that voice saying to you? Think about it……. When you look in the mirror what do you say to yourself? Think about it…… When you wake up - first thing - what do you say to yourself? Think about it….. When you forget something - what do you say to yourself? When you realize you made a mistake -what do you say to yourself? Think about it…. During a tough workout, when you find yourself struggling with a certain exercise? What do you say to yourself? Think about it…….. Are you kind? Are you funny? Do you make yourself laugh? Think about it. Are you compassionate? Are you polite? Do you speak to yourself with manners? Think about it….. Are you encouraging? Are you uplifting? Do you make your self feel good? Do you compliment yourself? Do you build yourself up? Think about it.. Or Are you critical? Are you negative? Are you hard on yourself? Think about it…. What you say to yourself - would you say to someone you love? What you say to yourself would you say to a friend? Think about it… What you say to yourself - would you say the person next to you? What you say to yourself would you say to a complete stranger? Think about it…. Ask yourself this - Would you allow someone to speak to yourself the way you speak to yourself? Would you want to be friends with a person who spoke to you the way you speak to yourself? Would you speak to a complete stranger the way you speak to yourself? Why is it that you speak more politely to a complete stranger than you do to yourself? This idle chatter in the head or self talk, is very powerful. You may think this self talk is silent and that no one else hears you but you are wrong. I may not hear the words you are saying to yourself but I can tell what you saying. It’s in your posture, it’s in your facial expressions, It’s in your tone even when you are speaking about something completely different. So think about this - do you think others want to be around a person that speaks to themselves so impolitely? This self talk is heard loud and clear whether you realize it or not. And none of us want to spend time with impolite harsh critical individuals. So speak kindly to yourself. Be compassionate with your self. Encourage yourself. Be polite to yourself. Build yourself up. Compliment yourself, Make yourself laugh. Speak to yourself the way you speak to others. This self talk is more powerful than you realize……. You see as humans we have this uncontrollable strong urge to be right. Think about it. How many times have you been in a disagreement with someone just in an effort to prove yourself right. At that moment it’s more important to you to be right than to be happy so you will argue your point just to prove yourself right. It’s natural, we humans want to be right. So on a sub conscience level no matter what it is you say to yourself you will want to prove yourself right and on a sub conscience level you will sabotage yourself in an effort to prove yourself right. If you say “you are so weak, you are so fat, you are so dumb, you are so forgetful. Then that is exactly what you will want to prove to yourself. For some people they are so conditioned to speak to themselves this way that it is a tough habit tp break. So I recommend this very simple technique. Come up with one very simple affirmation about yourself. Or a mantra. You want to keep it very simple. 3-5 words at most. Maybe the affirmation is “I am strong” or I am smart” or "I am beautiful” or "I can do anything”. or "I am loved”. And when you find your voice coming up - just go to your mantra and keep repeating it. Over and over again. Take the thought process out of everything and just go to your mantra over and over again - just like Rain man. “ I am strong, I am strong, I am strong”. I highly recommend you write your mantra down and post it in places where you will see it throughout the day to serve as a reminder to yourself. Perhaps on your bathroom mirror, your steering wheel, your lap top key board. If you prefer to keep your mantra private then create an acronym to represent your mantra. For example. If your mantra is “I am strong” then write “IAS” and post it where you will see it throughout the day. I also suggest you set reminders on your phone to go off at certain times of the day saying something kind, compassionate, and encouraging to yourself. Try these practices to condition your voice inside your mind. Go rain man with your mantra. Look yourself in the mirror every day and compliment yourself. Your internal voice will be heard loud and clear. People will want to spend time with you as a happy self liking individual. Be encouraging to yourself, build yourself up, be kind to yourself. And you will see you will want to prove yourself right... Coach Celia Dubey can be reached at Celia@TarponTotalFitness.com *Created by Celia Dubey, Total Fitness Health Club & Spa.
