A brief set by ‘Stack Magazines’, an independant magazine subscription service, that delievers a new magazine to your doorstep each month. I was approached by friend from Art Foundation, Charlotte Marshall. She is now a proffesional writer, and wanted help setting up a new magazine. Although the competition is set by Stack Magazine, Charlotte intends on printing the magazine at mass, with the final magazines being distributed anyway.

Initial Research
Obviously before considering any aesthetic options for the magazine, it was vital to assess the competition. The above publication by Ruth Jamieson takes an extremely thorough approach at evaluation current independant magazines, and is also update, as it is recently published.

Conclusions of Research
The following conclusions were made: - Independant magazines have no obvious correlating aesthetic or subject matter, they thrive on being different. - Most are full colour. Arvinn&Finn could utilise a refined colour pallette in order to stand out. - Many are bold in their colour, but very little are bold with headlines. This is something usually associated with tabloid magazines.

Client’s Research
In order to show the aesthetic the Charlotte was looking for, a group Pinterest board was set up. It became apparent from all of the references that colour was a large driving force with the design of the publication, in particlar neon and pastel colours. With very little start up funds, it was suggested to the client to consider risograph printing. This was taken forward, with the end result to be risograph printed. The colours themselves are still under deliberation, and will be negotatied with the printer, depending on what they can supply.

Typographic Decisions
Bodycopy is at 10pt, a fairly large size for bodycopy. However magazines require larger bodtcopy sizes to aid being read on the move. Berlingske Serif has also been chosen, due to a large x-height, making bodycopy appear more ‘boxed’. The sub headers are in Berlingske Serif, with the beginning of each subheader set in italic, to show the start of an article. Berlingske was chosen due to it’s great readability, but also unique and quirky features. An example of this can be seen in the lowercase r.
