Background
Brief 12 — Faculty
The Faculty is a platform for which talented, up and coming DJ’s can showcase their work on the rest of the youtube world. Currently, the Boiler Room has simply gotten too big and is no longer accessible to younger DJ’s who already have a following and have played at festivals but need that step up. The Faculty invites circa 100-200 people to a venue, no phones, no cameras just them and the DJ’s at hand. We plan to tour the UK going to Newcastle, Bristol and Manchester to bring young talent together and Leeds is definitely on the cards. Ultimately, The Faculty hope to rival the Boiler Room in that there are plenty of up and coming hidden talent in various countries just waiting to be discovered. The Faculty will showcase a variety of genres of music, techno, house, progressive house and disco etc. But we are keen to keep the ‘underground’ image going. The Faculty not be showcasing chart toppers etc. So the colours we are looking for are probably just black and white. Nothing confusing. Simplicity really is at the heart of this.

Industrial / Urban Typography Research
Sam Horbye, the head of marketing at The Faculty confirmed that they were after a strong, structural logotype. With many of the events taking place in disused warehouse and industrial environments, it seemed essential to consider warehouse signage. From looking into industrial signage, there is a clear correlation of structure within the typefaces. Researching into this gave a huge insite into a given aesthetic in this type of environment.

Initial Ideas
With structure and rigidity as a priority, mostly sans serif grotesks and uppercase forms were considered. Although less structual, the client gave feedback on these ideas that a combination of upper and lowercase in the logotype will be more suitable.

Custom Logotype
A ridig typeface with 45 degree anges was used as a basis for a logotype. A ‘Th’ ligature and a ‘tg’ ligature was created, after each letter was kerned optically. The ascender height was lowered to the same height as the cap height to create visual balance.

Graphic System
As many of the DJ’s do not have photos of them for promotional use, digital collages by Alexander Rossa have been commision for use.
Branded Collateral 02
Set rules are used to create consistancy over all promotional cards: - All blocks are set colours from the imagery, and aligned within a 12 column grid. - The brand mark and event info always appear in the same rows. - Titling is always centred within the cards.
