Joyed July Meals on Heels By: Joelle Chaves

On July 5th, 2014 Cardozo Key Club and Bronx Science Key Club went to The Carter Burden Center for the Aging to help out in the Meals on Heels project. Every week they send out food to the elderly who need them the most. As volunteers we get to deliver food to several people. There were three types of meals that was sent out, spaghetti with meatball (beef), ham and cheese (pork), and vegetarian burger for those who cannot eat pork and/or beef. They were also provided a cold pack, which included milk, oranges and other cold products. After we were given our respective assignments, with our partners (mine being BNCHS Treasurer Samantha Chan), we proceeded to deliver the food. Our deliveries went pretty well. The elders were so nice to us, and took their time to talk about our day and ask for our names. We got to go inside the buildings and see the amazing things that the Upper East Side had to offer. The walking also wasn’t too bad especially because we had a cart to carry our things. We had interesting people to deliver to like Mr. Rainbow, who asked for our names and asked us about our weekend. It was so nice to get to talk to the people we were helping because we usually worked behind the scenes and rarely get to personally work with the people we volunteer for. This even was so much fun, especially cause I got to do something different from out regular service events. This really felt like community service, it was also very fun walking around the city on a nice summer day. I really wish we can get to do this event again, because it’s definitely in my top five favorite volunteer events. I would like to thank The Carter Burden Center for all the work they do, and I really hope we get to work with them again!

Joyed July Walk Now For Autism Speaks By: Kelly Song

On Sunday, July 20th, I attended my second Autism Walk, this year located in Prospect Park. To be frank, the Autism Speaks organization did a great job in this year’s walk! Last year, it was less organized held at Citi Field. However, this past weekend, they had live entertainment, lots of refreshments and snacks, and energetic and passionate staff. The Autism Speaks event definitely lifted the lethargic “summer” spirits of the members (at least for me) prior to the countdown of the 2.2 mile walk. While our club was playing an intense game of Frisbee, I was happily bonding with other Key Clubbers while listening to Broadway songs and even participating in their Yoga warm-up. Through the entire 2.2 miles, I got to know many other members of my home club well; it was a great event to break the ice and form new friendships. In addition, it gave key clubbers an opportunity to get out of their homes and experience the rewarding moments of completing service again. Although the school year is over, the Key Club service year is far from ending. Overall, I enjoyed attending the Autism Walk this past Sunday, and I can’t wait to attend my third walk next summer.

Veteran’s Picnic By: Gilbert Chen On the last Saturday of July, I forced myself awake to go to an event where we would serve food for veterans. I went to the Bayside meet-up which only consisted of four people (including me), but we were later accompanied by our treasurer and secretary. Shortly after meeting, we walked to the picnic area located right outside the St. Albans Community Center, where the veterans were cared for. We started with wiping and cleaning the tables, and placing tablecloths on them. Occasionally, I was called out to show off my big, manly muscles. (Yup, definitely to show off my big, manly muscles. Totally.) After doing most of the work outside, we got to go into the community center and help those disabled, mostly by giving them a little push since most of the veterans were on wheelchairs. After helping the veterans out, we served food and beverages. The weather was nice outside until we felt a few drops of rain. (I think the clouds were jealous.) But fortunately, it stopped and we decided to serve food inside the community center. After that, we finally got to enjoy the delicious hotdogs and hamburgers and let me tell you, I felt like I touched Jesus with my taste buds, probably because I was hungry. As the hours passed, it was time to say farewell to the Kiwanis family that helped us. We took pictures and said our goodbyes. Looking back, we had fun helping out. And we got to meet some members from the Kiwanis family who showed that even passed their years of schooling; they still had the time to help those in need. Being in Key Club can really show you the joy in helping out others, and even after you graduate high school and college, you’re left with that desire to care for others. To put it simply, this event was one of the most enjoyable for Key Club.

Now A Word From Our President! Hey Cardozo Key Club! I hope everyone’s enjoying their summer! Can you believe that it’s practically the end of July already? It feels like our picnic was just yesterday! I just wanted to give a thank you shout out to everyone who has showed up to the events we had even though it’s summer vacation. I’m so grateful to see so many of you who are still active even though you’ve reached the 40 hours already. I am so proud to be your president; I hope that I can give back to this amazing club as much as you guys give a helping hand to help others. I really appreciate all the work you guys do, I really do, it means so much and I just hold so much pride as your president…Whenever I meet someone and they ask me what club I’m from and what position I hold, I always respond with a smile because it’s such an honor to be the president of one of the most biggest and active Key Clubs…I know it might seem like I’m constantly so repetitive about thanking you guys for attending events but I mean it with my heart every time I say it. We may never meet the people that we help but I hope you guys can get that feeling of satisfaction of knowing that you helped out someone in the world. I know you might ask, “How does walking help fight the cause?” Honestly, I believe that just showing support to fight against a cause gives others, the victims and those affected by the cause strength to keep fighting on. I hope you guys were able to enjoy the Walk Now for Autism Speaks event…I hope you guys liked seeing the smiles on the elderly people’s faces as we handed them the packaged food. I really am so amazed by how much work you guys do, and as president, I couldn’t ask for more and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Thank you guys so much for everything love and miss you all, hope to see you guys at upcoming events! Yours in service, Michelle Tam 2014-2015 President Benjamin N.
