Sidesplitting September 4th Annual New York Kiwanis Picnic By: Michelle Tam
I thought that September 20th would just be another normal picnic or gathering of Key Clubbers, but I’m glad I was wrong. The 4th Annual New York Kiwanis Picnic was held at Cunningham Park; 10 Key Clubs, 7 Circle K clubs, and 1 Kiwanis Club attended. We were able to raise $347 for the Eliminate Project! We had different games and ice breakers to meet other people who shared the same passion of doing service. First, we were randomly split into three groups. The first activity involved one person wearing a trash bag top; we had to use duct tape to design it based on the different scenarios within a limited amount of time. Another activity involved two people representing each group. Each person had to put a cracker on his or her forehead and use only his or her facial muscles to move the cracker and eat it, however, each cracker that was dropped lead to a penalty. Another activity was transporting water from one bucket to another bucket in a long distance using a cup or their hands. At the end, there was an auction to pie those of higher office with whipped cream or shaving cream to raise money for the Eliminate Project. Despite the numerous amount of bees within the park, I really enjoyed the event, being able to meet new people and build up on existing friendships.

Sidesplitting September Light the Night By: Rochelle Mendonca
This was officially my first event that started my last year in Key Club. It sounds sad to put it that way, but I know this event was the start to the best Key Club year ever! As per usual, we got lost during our way there, but this one was on me (sorry, again!). After a hectic ride there, we finally got to Forest Park where many people were reminded of the walk from the year before. This was my first Light the Night walk, and I was determined to make the most of it. We took advantage of that bright sunny afternoon by recreating pictures of last year’s walk, and talking new pictures with our Key Club sign, polaroid frame, and fake mustaches, all made by our wonderful editor! It started getting dark around 7 o’clock, and that’s when the walk finally started! I had the honor of holding the Key Club sign, for the most part, while people lit the way with their “magically” lit balloons. To this day, I’m still not sure how long the walk was, but because I was around such great people, it didn’t even seem long. When we got back to our starting point, we finished off our evening by taking a group picture. After several fails, we finally got a few great shots that showed off the people that truly care for Key Club. Overall, I wanted to thank everyone for coming. Thanks to you guys we raised $89! I hope to see everyone soon at future meetings, walks, and events!

Sidesplitting September Fall Rally By: Sharon Liao
From new people to amazing workshops, New York City Fall Rally held on September 27 from 9:30-4:00 was one of the most amazing events I had been to during my two years as a Key Club member. Key Clubbers from Division 8, 8-A, 9, 10,11 and 12 gathered in Stuyvesant High School to learn more about Key Club. At this event I was able to meet a lot of new people and was able to learn more about board position responsibilities as well as projects that Key Club is involved in such as the Thirst Project. Before hearing about this project I didn’t know or even thought about how many people suffered and died from water- contamination related diseases. We were able to hear from the Co-Coordinator of the Education Outreach Department of the Thirst Project, Evan Wesley and after hearing his presentation it really made me want to do something to help these kids and families that have to walk for hours just to drink dirty water. We were also provided with many fun and informative workshops. I attended the Membership Recruitment workshop, which gave tips on how to get people interested in joining Key Club, how to make them stay and reasons as to why they leave, therefore how to improve the club. I also attended the workshop for President/VP and learned about the responsibility of being a Club Officer. Then I attended the workshop for Balancing Key Club, School and Life, which was very useful because as teenagers we have a lot on our plate and we definitely need some tips on how to balance everything. Lastly I attended Keeping it Classy, a workshop explaining how to always stay professional and classy while having fun and helping those less fortunate than us. Attending this event only made me love Key Club even more and
made me want to further engage in the club!

Sidesplitting September Walk To End Alzheimer’s By: Stephanie Chen
On September 28, 2014, Key Club went on an event at Corona Park. To create awareness of diseases and help by donating for research purposes, we attended the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Today was a day of fun and excitement with many other Key Club members of Cardozo. While we were waiting for the event to begin, we played a friendly game of tag. Even before the start of the event us members were already having fun together. As people passed by, they watched us laughing and running around acting like our usual crazy selves, each with a smile on our faces. Around our big family was a happy atmosphere where pictures were taken and videos were recorded. Sadly, not all the Key Club members were able to attend, but we still had fun. My favorite part of the walk was sightseeing during the 2-mile journey and going to the carousel, a free ride from the event. We passed the Unisphere and saw the Citi Field Stadium, with people leaving the train station, excited for the Mets game. I would recommend this event to my friends and family, as well as acquaintances. It was enjoyable and there were volunteers cheering on the sidelines, to keep everybody excited and motivated as we walk to support those with Alzheimer’s, people we know with Alzheimer’s, and as someone with Alzheimer’s.

Now A Word From Our President! Hey Cardozo Key Club! So, another school year has started and I hope that everyone has been doing well! Shout out to my seniors…anyone feeling the senioritis and stress of college apps and essays yet? I know I’m starting to stress but I know we can get through this guys! Even though attending Key Club events involves getting up early in the morning instead of sleeping in, I really love to attend events. I don’t see volunteering or attending events as “work”, I find it as a way of just enjoying myself while having fun, it’s also one of my escapes from the stress from the heavy school workload. I hope that as the school year starts running again that even though we may all be busy dealing with our own individual stresses, I hope that we can have more events for you guys that you guys will attend and enjoy. Our school’s club fair is on September 30th…I really hope that we are able to recruit even more members and make our K-family even bigger than it already is. I just want to thank you guys for coming out to Light the Night on the 20th, I hope you guys enjoyed the event like I did! I really appreciate that you guys came out so late and stayed out late just to attend the event, it really means so much. I hope that I can see old and new faces at our first meeting on October 7th! Thank you guys so much for all your hard work, because without you guys, our Key Club wouldn’t even exist and so many more people would be facing different diseases and causes. I hope to see you guys soon! Love and miss you all! Yours in caring and service, Michelle Tam 2014-2015 Club President Benjamin N. Cardozo Key Club
