Judges’ Pick CARDOZO KEY CLUB | ISSUE III | JUNE

Editor’s Note : The Key Club year has official come to a close. It is always bitter sweet when this happens. It’s great that it’s the summer, which means more time to binge watch your favourite shows on Netflix and sleep all day, but it also means less events to go and less time with your Key Club Family. This year for our club has been full of amazing changes, it’s been a rollercoaster ride of amazingness! It’s all because of you, and our IP board of course. It really was the best Key Club year, I will never forget it. It was the year where I realized that who I am without Key Club is the person that I don’t want to be. With Senior Year coming in I am thankful to have Key Club as distraction from all the stress that it has to bring. There will be tears in Senior Year, mostly from unforgiving teachers but also from the fact that this will be my last year in Key Club and it really pains me to hear that. I don’t like the fact that by this time next year, I will have to say goodbye to Key Club, and hello to uncertainty. I’m going to miss it all, the events, the people and the feeling of waking up at 4 in the morning to get on a subway to go on a new adventure with the people that have become my family. You guys have given me the best three years of my life, and this next one will be very bitter sweet. I can’t wait. Thank you so much for everything, for giving me a reason to wake up and smile everyday.

Jubilant June Great Strides | Foley Square The Cystic Fibrosis event was on the day after Relay for Life and the Color Run event. When I arrived to the meet up in Flushing, only Rochelle and Michelle was there… it was very lonely… Either Relay for Life was too much to handle, or everyone was just too busy dreaming about community service, most likely dreaming, OBVIOUSLY CAUSE #keyclubislife. We went on the train, towards Foley Square. When we got there, we had to walk through a dense jungle of humans, showing off my dance moves after I got through... I was a dying seagull. Anyway, soon after, The Three Musketeers (Me, Michelle, Rochelle) wrote words of encouragement for those affected by cystic fibrosis and started the walk shortly after. It was an amazing experience, walking through the city and sightseeing. The skyscrapers and the view of the river made up for the hot weather… because I was there, obviously. There was so much to see, but all things come to an end. We finished the race receiving wristbands and a certificate, ending the day exhausted. Looking back, it makes me happy to see so many people collaborating and making this event successful, putting their efforts for those affected, knowing they might no meet them or receive anything back in return. “Giving of any kind… taking an action… begins the process of change, and moves us to remember that we are part of a much greater universe.” –Mbali Creazzo -Gilbert Chen

Jubilant June Cardozo Key Club End of the Year Picnic Cardozo’s Picnic was so much fun!! The activities they had were creative and original. I am amazed at the amount of people that came to the event, even when school was ending. That is what I call true dedication. I was glad that Cardozo invite Bayside to this event because it shows how are k-family interclub relation has grown stronger. I LOVE THAT JOEL GOT DUMPED WITH 5 BUCKETS OF WATER!!!!! -Gina Chen

The Key Club picnic was a blast. There was great music, food, drinks, and amazing activities. We played assassin, there was an epic game of Ultimate Frisbee, a Pay-To-Punish event that helped charities while making it fun for everyone to watch, and even water fights. All in all a great end-of-the-year get together that was a ton of fun for everyone while still supporting charities. It was annoying getting soaked over and over again, but we all had fun so it was all right. -Chris Cai

Jubilant June This was my first time going to the key club picnic. At first I got pretty grumpy when we had to wait for latecomers and traveling a long distance to go to the site. As the day progressed, my frown turned upside down. it was a blast, playing assassin and Ultimate Frisbee. I also bonded with people I knew and met new people, people that I had to "kill". Overall it was fun. My favorite moment, well I think everyone's favorite moment was when Joelle was struggling with her challenges and getting dunked on. Please pray for Joelle, pray that she does not get sick from that cold water and she would heal from her soreness. -Timothy Law

The Annual end of the year Key Club picnic is one of the most fun events in the entire year. It's a day of just pure fun and excitement. The board did a great job in planning everything out and it turned out great in the end! Assassin (planned by Gulam) was really fun and pretty competitive, but I ended up enjoying the water fight(s) even more! Also, Pay-2-Punish was oddly satisfying to watch and was a great way to raise money for donations! Joelle especially did the best and was a great sport for enduring every challenge bestowed upon her. Also, it was wonderful to see everyone getting their certificates and getting recognition for all their hard volunteer work! In the end, it was a lot of fun chilling and causing absolute mayhem in Alley Pond Park and this club has really become a big part of my high school career. We Got Dunked! If you were there, you saw, you witnessed the dunking of the board, mostly the always amazing me, Joelle Chaves. Thank you to everyone who donated to Pay-To-Punish, the money raised is now being sent to a district charity that needs it the most. It may have seemed that I was reluctant to do that punishments, cause I was, but I was happy to have gotten dunked for the sake of donating and helping out. Here are some of the board’s finest moments getting dunked!

In these pictures you see me almost drowning to death, and everyone who decided to dunk me dying of laughter. The water was a little cold, and I was soaking wet by the end of it. It hurt a little but no pain no gain. If you see me crying for the next few days, its cause of the water that went inside my head, I’m not actually crying, my body is just trying to get rid of the excess water!

We Got Dunked!

I mean, it would not have been fair if they got to dunk me and I couldn’t dunk them! There were all willing to do so, none of them protested, and I was happy to oblige! This was definitely the highlight of the event for me. Dunking my fellow board members was very fulfilling, it may sound mean but I enjoyed every minute of it. I’ve been through so much with these guys and I can’t for the year to come, so a little water is enough, for now, to let them know how much I love them and how grateful I am to have them as my friends. Plus it was all for charity!

A Message From Our Vice President Hey Clubbers, this year’s annual Key Club picnic turned out amazingly. It could not have been such a success without you guys. I want thank each and everyone one of you for not only attending the picnic, but being a part of Key Club as a whole. With our Pay-‐to-‐Punish fundraiser we were able to raise $115.11, in which we will donate to a district charity. I want to give a special congratulate our editor, creator of these newsletters, Joelle Chaves for being able to meet the quota of $50. The hours invested into this event was all well worth the outcome. Though the school year is over, I hope these summer events keep Cardozo Key Club, well and strong. The memories and bonds that were created this year and Key Club were unlike any other. It makes me proud to be your Vice President. I’m counting the days down to our first meeting in the next semester and I wish to see a ton of familiar faces. Not too long ago Key Club was doing very poorly with the school standings. With all your dedication, commitment, and hard work, Key Club was able to be brought to the greatest standings I’ve ever seen. You guys are the sole reason as to why Key Club is my family. I can’t say this enough but thank you all for being such a huge part of this club. I hope for the best of each and everyone one of you. I hope you all have a great summer! Happy Key Clubbing! Operation ISNH: Insert Ship Name Here What can I say about the annual Key Club picnic? Three words that can describe it are enchanting, thrilling and meaningful. Not because of the picnic itself but, the true meaning behind the date. It was a special day; it was the day that I wanted to ask Michelle out. It started off like any ordinary day, forced to wake up at 6 A.M in order to make it to Samantha’s house so we can start setting up for the picnic. It wouldn’t have been a problem except for the fact that I knew that day was going to change my life. Sounds corny I know but it’s not wrong. Once I got to Sam’s house, Joelle, Sam and Rachel asked if I was ready. I said yes but I knew I was scared. I played it off making sure they saw no signs of doubt and just a confident person. At 7:20 A.M we started to walk towards the park. We were supposed to meet Michelle there. Every step I took caused my heart to pound faster and faster until we got to the front entrance of the park. There she was, just standing there. I felt exhilarated when I saw her, my heart stopped and I wished time just froze right there. We had to make our journey to our site. Let’s just say the walk was horrendous and terrifying. We eventually made it to our site, which was a sign of relief because we thought we wouldn’t have, make it in time. We started to set up for the picnic, which was a blast. Around 10 A.M, people started to make their way to the area. The whole time I was thinking about the perfect moment to ask her. The night before the picnic we had a set schedule that we were supposed to follow but other mishaps occurred. A water fight broke out and caused a headache for Gulam and I because it was already 11:20 A.M and the first event had not begun. I kept staring at the time because I was hoping we were going be on a strict schedule. I wanted to ask Michelle out after the first event but of course things didn’t go out as planned. I was growing impatient and wanted to execute the plan already. Finally, I had enough, I called in everyone who was a part of the big surprise and told them to meet us at the handball court. The whole situation was suspicious but, Michelle already knew today was the day I was going to do it. Regardless, I wanted to do it because everyone was there and the moment was right. I started to walk to the handball court with Gulam and I can remember my heart beating faster and harder the closer we got to the court. Joelle handed us the signs and it looked amazing. I asked Joelle to make the signs for the surprise and I have to say, she did a fantastic job with it. It was very artistic and so much better than what I would have done. We called Jason, who was supposed to be distracting her, to tell him to bring her over. Of course Jason almost misunderstood the task and almost bought the entire crowd over. If it wasn’t for Gulam, all the members would have been there and it would have been a very awkward situation. Once Michelle got to the court, it was time to show her the surprise. Of course we messed up the whole operation. It was suppose to say “Will You Be My Princess?” but instead, it came out to “Princess? My Be You Will” Although we screwed up, we got the message through. I stood there in fear thinking that she would say no, the minute it took her to respond felt like hours, my heart raced. Finally, she said… YES! I didn’t display many emotions but I was truly happy inside. I wanted to pick up her and everything but, everyone was around and it would be strange. To others, the annual key club picnic day is just an ordinary day for them but, to me, it was a special day that I will never forget! -Kevin Chu

DIVISION 8 BBQ/PICNIC The Divisional BBQ event is a must go to event. With an admission fee of ten dollars, the event was a blast overall. The water balloon activity was enjoyable. The winners received a free chance to whip cream a board member when they were auctioned for later. The balloon popping activity was also fun to play and had the same prize although I wished I could have lasted longer. With hot dogs, burgers, and soda, the divisional BBQ was like a normal BBQ that was comforting like a whole family get together. Everyone was friendly and I met some new people that were introduced to me. Overall, making new friends and having a good time was a wonderful experience. -Aaron Nook

On June 28th, at Flushing Meadow Park, I was able to attend the divisional picnic. I arrived to the picnic near the end, so I unfortunately missed out on the activities. However, I was able to enjoy seeing the happy faces of everyone that attended. Upon my arrival, I was treated with great levels of hospitality by Timothy Law and Rochelle Mendonca. To my “surprise”, it was all a ploy to pie me in the face. I heard that our president, Michelle, was also pied. That brought a smile upon my face. For the little amount that I was there I have to admit I did enjoy being able to goof around with of my officers, and members. 13 some -Gulam Islam

-Light the Night, it was fun -Caring, amazing -Yes Kelly Wong | Junior -Honestly, when I first joined the club, that was all it was...a club. It was another thing to put on my college applications. But I went to more events and met more people and it became so much more than an extracurricular. It started to become another family to me, full of people I grew closer to and cared about, full of people who cared about me. -Breast Cancer Walk -Color Run because it was so much fun with the paint and it felt so good to cheer people on and tell them you believe in them. -Fun, caring, helpful -Key Club has made me a better person. It opened my eyes and helped me realize that helping others can help you, too, because it can make you so much happier. Timothy Law | Junior -I was invited to join freshmen year by Jonathan Wong. For two years I only went to the Halloween Carnival and i did not pay my dues. I felt like it was a waste of money. I officially joined Junior year because Jason became the president and i love to annoy him. As I attended each event, i met and bonded with people. I felt like key club has become my family. -halloween Carnival -THIS IS A STUPID QUESTION. ALL OF THE EVENTS WERE SPECIAL. well definitely not the aids walk. -family, love, fun, camaraderie -im volunteering more now. Troy Cao | Sophomore -When I walked into the first meeting of key club in the beginning of the year, I thought "Oh, this is just a typical club that people attend for volunteer service." I can't even begin to explain how wrong I was. As I attended more events and meetings, I got to know more people of the board and the club members. This is so much more (and not even)than just a club for voluteer service and a college transcript asset, but a club with feelings and motivation to truly help others in the world to the best way they possibly can. Personally, my perspective on key club changed the most through the hearts of the members and them persuading me that this club has so much more. -Light the Night (not too sure) -Light the Night because key club rarely has night events and Lights are mad cool. -Caring, Creative, Very Very Fun. -I grew as a person. My awareness of the world grew, I cooperate and help others a lot more, and I try with my friends to help people in more and different ways.

How was this year for you? Jane Noyeon Park | Freshman -I've always liked volunteering and helping people so it was very exciting to know that there were other volunteering clubs other than Red Cross and UNICEF. I joined right away when I found a Key Club poster at the club fair because there was nothing holding me back from it. It seemed like a good club and the board members who were there representing the club seemed like nice people, too! And I've never once regretted this decision I made that day. -Breast Cancer Walk -My most memorable event was NYCAASC because it was the type of volunteering event i like. i felt like i was actually really active and helpful. Plus, this event brought me the opportunity to get to know more people in key club and actually start talking to them. - psh. this is easy. #keyclubislife - Key Club has changed me greatly. Because of key club, I am now so much more confident, outgoing, and active. In addition, like I always say, key club was one of my healing factors that helped me through hard times during my freshman year. i genuinely appreciate this and I hope other people who arent part of key club can be able to experience this wonderful feeling as soon as possible. Bonnie Yam | Junior - I first heard about Key Club through my cousin. She was in KC many years ago and talked about the great experiences that she had. I thought,"Why not? It wouldn't hurt to join anything." I was able to hear more about the club during the club fair freshman year. At first, I was hesitant to join upon hearing about the dues that we had to pay but I took a risk and joined. I later learned that the money went to special organizations for those that needed it. My first event was the Breast Cancer Walk at Flushing Corona Park and my Key Club experience expanded from there. Key Club taught me a lot over the last three years since I first joined. I gained a lot of great memories that will always be remembered. I met many wonderful and weird people, most of which are my closest friends to this day. I even learned to take the subway for the first time with KC. I was able to learn the real meaning of helping people and making an impact on the world. KC changed my life in a positive way. I learned to be more outgoing and receptive to others. I found myself making friends with people that I would never imagine to be with. KC is not just about meeting new people but making unforgettable memories and becoming a family. KEY CLUB IS THE BEST!!! - Breast Cancer Walk at Flushing Corona Park - Relay for Life - fun, really fun, super fun, super duper fun - Yep Gilbert Chen | Sophomore - Key Club was first introduced to me by my brother who graduated from Cardozo. I just joined to get the hours at first, not really caring about the events as long as I get my credit. I really thought my opinion of the club would remain the same throughout my four years of high school, but after going to my first event, I befriended a few members of the club. After my second, I bonded with a few more people. Before I realized, I was going to Key Club events as frequently as I can. I cared less about the hours and focused more on the tasks at hand during these events. My personality began to change and I started to be more caring towards all aspects of my life. Sounds very corny, but that's just how it is. "Caring - Our way of life," Key club's motto became part of my life. - a park cleanup - The Starbucks Park Cleanup. It started my interest in Key Club. - Unique, Caring, Family - Turned my into a more caring individual

Rochelle Mendonca | Junior - I thought it was just another club, that I would have to do just to get hours to make my college app look nice. But as time went on I saw what kind of club it was: where people help out and have fun regardless, and act like one big happy family. Being on board helps me see a bigger view of key club and makes me appreciate that we have such an amazing club at our school. - Halloween Carnival - Picnic - fun with friends, water, & food (mostly junk food :/) - Life changing - Made me a better leader. Gave me a family

How was this year for you? Aaron Look | Sophomore - It was a very friendly club, and my expectations were made a reality. Very helpful board members that made attending events more fulfilling. - Fun - Kidney walk because of the fun visiting a foreign place - International joy - It has made me gone outside more. Jasslyne Jana | Freshman - I wasn't sure about the activity that you do in club because I never been in one. From one meeting, events to another, I started to be glad that I joined. There was a lot of fun activity and interesting ways to spend time with friends and make friends. The members of Key club board are great. I'm so joining again next year. - I think it was the Kidney Walk - Color Run, I think everyone know it was the best. I was in the Pink Team and we had such memories of rolling on the road and get paint all over. It was an AMAZING experience. - Not what I expected - It made me realize how a club can build remarkable memories during high school years and that high school is not that boring. Chloe Ong | Junior - I mainly joined because my friends made me and I thought it was just another volunteer club. Honestly, it really IS just another volunteer club. Not gonna lie. But the thing is, despite it just being that, it's become a huge part of my high school years and it's given me closer relationships between me, my friends, and also more people. It's gotten better since I first started unofficially participating (mainly because of the board changes) and has become more organized. - Halloween Carnival 2012 - Relay for Life because it was just a lot of fun and was essentially a chill day. - A close-knit community. - It gave me more incentive to get my lazy ass off my bed and actually do something that would benefit other people but me. Michelle Tam | Junior - When I first joined, I was really scared to approach others because I was a freshman. However, my view on society changed as I began to open myself up more to others because this club made me get that feeling of what a family is like. I eventually became more sociable and expressive to others. - Cardozo Halloween Carnival - LTC was my most memorable event because I was able to meet so many other Key Clubbers who share the same passion of service and I was also able to develop stronger bonds with my friends and it helped me realize how lucky I am to have so many amazing brothers and sisters. - amazing, family, magical - Key Club has shaped me into who I am, without Key Club, I wouldn't be who I am and where I am today. I was able to develop more communication and leadership skills. I was also able to meet many friends who are now like sisters and brothers to me.

How was this year for you? Jacky Liu | Junior -At first, I thought Key Club was all about the spirit of voluntary service. I was wrong. Very. Very. Wrong. Chapter One: Day One lied to me and told me not to worry about the money and that it would be fine if I didn't pay at events. At first, I was quite assured, believe you not, however, now that it's the end of the year, I can safely, and confidently, say that...my wallet is broke. I have learned through thick and...thicker, unlike my wallet, that Key Club is for the rich. Don't get me wrong, I'm not as worried about myself as I am for Kevin. The poor lad didn't plan out his anniversary date very nicely and his wallet is going to be non-existent. But I digress, if you hear people saying "Oh! Key Club is awesome!" or "Key Club is my family!", then you know there's something wrong with them. Key Club cannot be "awesome" since it doesn't portray aspects of impressiveness nor does it inspire great admiration. It also can't be someone's family, that's just dumb. Psh. A family is defined as a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household. We don't have a household. We're too poor for that... However, never let anyone tell you Key Club is a bad club, (we're better than UNICEF and Red Cross), because Key Club is quite amazing. What Key Club is, is a junction. It connects a bunch of Asians---I mean people who don't know each other to one another and creates something really awe-inspiring, a group of friends. I never would have met some of the closest friends I have today without Key Club and I would never have regretted it. I mean I would regret it! Yes! I promise!...maybe...? Jokes aside, my view on Key Club has really undergone a major evolution as the year passed. I no longer think of Key Club as just a club of volunteer service, instead, I now see it as a junction. A place where I can ask anyone for help and they would need to abide it because I am very exploiting. All in all, I hope everyone who reads this will give Key Club a better outlook. Remember, Key Club is all about monayyy. Dat ca$h monayyy. -Light the Night -I believe that would be the March of Dimes. I got a lot of free stuff. -Chaotic. Very very chaotic. -It hasn't.

Gulam Islam | Junior -I was first introduced to Key Club by brother. He was a member at HSMSE. Every weekend I would see him get up so early and head out to go to "Key Club." One day he went to this overnight trip known as LTC. When he came back from that trip he shared so many stories and so many amazing moments he had with Key Club. I joined Key Club because I wanted to experience for myself what he had shared. However, I wasn't able to. I was able to experience so much more. Being a member you do have these amazing moments, but being in officer the club becomes more than a club. It becomes family.

-My first event with Cardozo was the Breast Cancer Walk of 2011. There I met the IP President, Secretary, Treasurer, Editor, and the current President.

-My most memorable had to be LTC. LTC was this huge roller coaster that I didn't want to get off. I was able to get so much closer to the other officers that went. I know only a few would be able to experience LTC, but going changes everything. It makes you want to be a part of more, and that's exactly what I want to do. -Relationship, Service, Family. -I used to be that kid that would only have a few select amount of people i would actually communicate with. Now I was able to make so many amazing friends, and relationships. I become more comfortable with pressure, and was able to become a leader. I was able to kick my stage fright, and social anxiety, right to the curb.

Kind words produce happiness. How often have we ourselves been made happy by kind words, in a manner and to an extent which we are unable to explain! Â

YOU MADE IT! YOU GOT 40+/40! This list consists of all the people that dedicated 40 or more hours to Key Club this year. These are the people that make Key Club what it is, a family of people that care. They took time away from their busy, or not, schedule to help out the community and make a change. They could’ve slept in on the weekends, went home early after school, but no, they chose to go to events and meetings and make a difference. The whole board would like to thank all these people, without them we would be nothing, just a bunch of idiots fighting each other. Thank you to all you Key Clubbers, even if you didn’t reach 40 hours, you tried and it still made a difference. We all love you and we can’t wait to see you next year! What’s coming up? Panera Bread Fundraiser When: June 30th | 4-8 PM Where: 25441 Horace Harding Expy, New York, New York 11362 What: Come to a Panera Bread Fundraiser for Students Helping Honduras! It's a good way to end the school year, meet up with friends, and support a great cause! All of the money raised will go towards sponsoring the 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms AND putting on the roof of the 4th grade classroom in the Villa Soleada Bilingual School in Honduras!

Surprise Division Event -This event was solely planned by our amazing E.A. Kelly Song. She as gone above and beyond to make Division 8 reach its full potential, and has never ever dissapointed us when it comes to her events. Let’s all get excited as more details come in about this surprise event.

DUES DUES DUES! -The new year is just around the corner meaning dues will be collected soon. So save up a dollar a day for 15 days and have your $15 ready! It is mandatory to pay the due in order to be a member! We know it is a lot but it does all go back to you! Thanks for being understanding guys! We’re very thankful!

The 2015 Lea dership Training Conference will be held at the Desmond Hotel in Albany from March 27 to March 29th. It is a great way to get to know more about what it’s like being a Key Clubber, and get to know other Key Clubs who share the same passion as you do. This local version of ICON is so much fun, and everyone in Key Club can go! If you want to be a future board member or just want to hang out with amazing people come to LTC 2015! For further questions ask your board members!

Now A Word From Our President! Hey Cardozo Key Club! I just really wanted to reiterate how amazed I am by all your hard work and dedication…You guys have done so much for the club, I really hope that I can do even more things for you guys because you guys really deserve the best possible president there is. Thank you guys so much for such an amazing service year! I am so grateful that you guys are always so enthusiastic about attending events. At first, when I became president, I was always scared about how I could get members to attend events…I’m so glad to see that you guys truly love going to events and that you guys actually have fun. We’ve made it through the school year and I know it’s been rough but we made it! I hope you guys enjoyed our end of the year picnic! You guys really deserved all the fun after a hardworking service year! Believe it or not, about 70 Key Clubbers have completed at least 40 service hours, that’s insane! …In a good way! I’m so proud and grateful for how you guys are able to give back to the world without asking for anything in return. I really hope you guys were able to meet new friends, build stronger bonds with your existing friendships, and open up the others more. When I first entered high school, I was insanely quiet…Key Club completely changed me, in a positive way. I hope that over the year, Key Club has impacted you in a positive way, whether it’s big or small. Even though the school year may be over, there is never an end to give others a helping hand. We’ll still hold events during the summer as well, so you guys can still catch up for the 40 hours! I really hope to see you guys over the summer and I hope to see familiar and new faces at Key Club in September! Enjoy your summer! I love you guys!
