brief.
Yes, without a doubt, Joey No. 2 itself has been responsible for more than a few late nights. And as I’ve spent the past few evenings putting the final touches on these pages, I’ve been contemplating what this issue, our second, is really about. Two months ago, I offered our contributors the phrase “up all night” as a source of inspiration— half expecting (worrying?) that I might be left to make sense of a glut of party-girl snapshots. Nonetheless, the theme seemed apt, as the months of September through January always flip an antihibernation switch in my brain: “Must be social; must wear Docs; must enjoy seasonal beers.” And once the stories began to develop, I loved seeing each photographer and stylist’s spin on the thread,
from David Shama’s tale of three witches (“Her Devilish Deeds”) to Bryan Sheffield’s naked trip to Reno (“This Is Not Las Vegas”). Throughout it all, though, what stood out most were the friendships involved in making everything happen. I spent an evening downing drinks with Shawn Brackbill to help forge details for his sunrise shoot in Manhattan. For this issue’s portfolio, Marley Kate collaborated with one of her best friends, Allison Miller, to style and photograph eight models. I even used “up all night” as an excuse to hang out with my buddy Cassie, who’s been living without a home for the past five months. Joey is ultimately a zine about attitude and style, so our pages here capture an exhilaration (and exhaustion) akin to our most ridiculous late-night memories of times spent with our favorite people. Enjoy it! — Aaron @ Joey j. | 006
David Shama Photographer — When’s the last time you stayed up all night? A hell of a night where everything that could go wrong did go wrong and then in the end, well, the end was better. — Best midnight movie? Sleeper. — Best latenight snack? Spaghetti. — Tell us a secret about yourself. I never sleep. — What are you most proud of this year? Having bought a scooter and not having crashed it.

Chloe Hartstein Stylist — When’s the last time you stayed up all night? At the end of fashion week, my friend Michael and I went dancing and had a blast. — Best midnight movie? Step Brothers—I quote the entire movie while watching it. — Best fuel when you feel like crashing? Fountain Diet Coke. — Complete this sentence: “Staying up all night means I can always...” Complain about being tired. — Tell us a secret about yourself. Neverrrrr.
Bryan Sheffield Photographer — When’s the last time you stayed up all night? The night before Halloween. We raged a few parties, drank odd drinks and danced to “hit” songs I have never heard before. — Best midnight movie? Cocksucker Blues. — Best latenight snack? the joy of just because you can. Cassie Marketos has a great job, rad friends and a supportive family. So why, at 24 years old, has she decided to be homeless for the past five months?
photography by turkishomework.
— You left your last somewhat permanent home in May. What was your plan? I came to New York [years before] with no agenda and no idea what I was doing. For me, it was time to not do that anymore, and this was a way of being like, “You have to get it together”— by denying myself a home. I moved into a sublet and never unpacked. Wherever my home was just ended up feeling like some kind of weird trap, like it was some sort of resignation on my part to have to go there. I didn’t want to be anywhere. It was great to have a backpack with everything I needed in it; wherever I ended up that night or the next day was home. — What did you need? Shampoo, conditioner, soap, disposable razor, toothbrush, at least four pairs of underwear, if it’s summer sandals, two pairs of shorts, five shirts. — What color is your backpack? Purple. I always know it’s mine. — How did summer progress for you? After I put all my shit in storage, I would be at a different j. | 029
place eight times a month maybe— three days here, four days there, then one of the nights sleeping in my office, which my co-workers don’t know about. I had dropped my phone in the toilet, so it didn’t work anymore: For a month, I’d have to walk to my friend’s door and yell at her window until she came to it. I’d fall asleep on her floor for four hours and then get up and go to work. — How did being in New York play into your experience? By nature, I’m a restless person. In New York you have where you live, where you work and one of your friends’ houses, and that’s like the triangle you operate within. But if you live in a different place every week, you get to know so much stuff that you’d never see before—through that I learned about something like walking over the bridge to work, which I now do all the time. — Were you eating, like, beans and toast? So many of my friends would laugh at you saying that. There was a really long time when

I didn’t have a stable kitchen, so I’d just eat cans of black beans with hot sauce for dinner. It’s portable, it was not disgusting, and it’s cheap. — How was that? It was pretty unsatisfying. But for three month, I pretty much ate whatever and tried to feel good about it. I got in the habit of only eating the bare minimum of what was on hand, so I’d end up eating a lot of dried cereal, because we have that at work, and then I’d come home and just eat beans. It was dumb. — You just got back from Europe. why did you end up there? I went to Turkey because 12 sublets that I was trying to nail down for October fell through. I had nowhere to go, so my friend in Turkey was like, “We have a spare room. Just come stay in it.” I am extremely lucky because my mom’s a flight attendant and I can fly for free, so when I couldn’t find a place to live, I flew off to the places that I could get to for free. I also have a great job that lets me work from abroad. — How has growing up with that luxury affected your attitude today? When considering going places, I learned never to think about
“How much sleep am I going to get?” and “Where am I going to stay?” If you have 12 hours on the ground somewhere and a reason to go there, you go. All I would need anywhere in the world is for someone to say, “Come stay with me.” This may be a way for me to reconcile the differences in my personality, which totally loves having security, a full-time job, close friends and a great life in New York, but also craves this kind of insanity. — have your parents helped cultivate this attitude in you? I’m more like my mom than I used to realize. She’s extremely strong, independent and curious. She’s put off retirement for years and years because she doesn’t want to give up being able to go new places. One time she took me to Hawaii to get a pizza. We didn’t sleep for, like, four days. — will you always end up coming back to New York? I’m not unhappy in New York. But it makes me excited to see other places; it makes me curious. — But is it a constant? No, I don’t think I see anything in my life as a constant. But who does at my age? I’m 24. Maybe that’s what I’m trying to figure out. j. | 032

french press coffee
We quit coffee for two years. So long, assured AM wakeup; we were set taking our chances (yipes!) with cup after cup after cup of black tea. But this summer, the junkie’s jones for java crept back after a “just this one” of the iced variety ruined our abstenation from the murky-delicious stuff. Soon, we were falling asleep dreaming of our next chilly brew from Naidre’s, and as the sweltering months ended, we found ourselves swiftly reunited with the comforting thrills of hot coffee— the craving being as much for its rituals as its taste and effect. Now, each morning welcomes a gentle push on the Bodum French press, allowing the opportunity for precision and refinement one cup at a time. Luxury. j. | 056

cloud nothings We have little patience for anything anymore. To paraphrase Withnail, we want everything here, and we want it all now. So we can thank Cloud Nothings’s Dylan Baldi for delivering a self-titled record—28 minutes that feels more like 14—that’s here and gone before you even realize you’ve been pink-bellied, gobbed to a dripping mess and teased with the type of stonerpunk immediacy someone like Wavves might fantasize about on his gnarliest of glue-cations. You’ll need another listen. And second time through you’ll recognize Baldi’s impatience as your own. Angst ain’t got nothing on anxious enthusiasm here, though Cloud Nothings tempers its skittish vigor with a keen ear for Matthew Sweet–candy ’90s-rock-radio infectiousness, letting his fury fly only when necessary. j. | 076
