brief.

My love for New York is undeniable; however, summer in the city fills my head with dreams of a swift escape. Rental cars, cheap hotels, fresh air, highway mixtapes, jumbo packs of Twizzlers and gas-station coffee—anything away from the oppressive heat of subway platforms and that odor so often wafting in from the river. I started working on Joey No. 4 in early summer, and with thoughts of fleeing NYC, I poached the title of a song by the UK band Yuck— “Get Away”—for this issue’s theme, looking to collect stories of travel, road trips and leaving home—simply getting away. We hopped continents for a pair of stories produced in France. “Joey in Paris” sees our usual model portfolio cast and shot by

David Shama, while “American Girl in Paris” catches up with Mississippi gal Jlynn (last seen in the casting pages of Joey Journal) as she builds her career as a model in Europe and becomes good friends with photographer Alex Brunet. Elsewhere, Bon Jane—featured as a model in our previous issue— grabs a camera this time around to shoot “Syd and Vik,” and Graham Dunn packs his bags (and a tent) for “In Every Direction.” Somewhat inevitably, this issue is about home as much as it is about leaving it. As Twin Sister singer Andrea Estella—photographed here by Shawn Brackbill— recollected the joys of returning to her Long Island home after a tour, I couldn’t help but feel excited about the New York months to come. If nothing else, this is an issue I just had to get out of my system, and I hope you dig it. Until next year. — Aaron @ Joey j. | 014

L. Michelle Reneau Stylist — What is home to you? NYC and Georgia. — What do you miss when you leave? My mom’s cooking! She pampers me with vegan meals. — When was the last time you traveled? Tulum in May. Clothes are not important there. Swimsuits and barefeet are the uniform. — Where do you dream of escaping to? A B&B in Nice. — What do you look forward to when coming home? Seeing my overweight bully of a cat.

sunken piano and swam in waterfalls. — Where do you dream of escaping to? Tokyo. I imagine a Lost in Translation situation. Hopefully, Bill Murray will be there, too. What do you look forward to when you’re coming home? Seeing my wife, Jess, and our toy poodle, who hates walks so much, she pretends she has a limp to avoid them.

Bon Jane Photographer — What is home to you? My dog, my bed, Nag Champa, good lighting, pretty pillows, soft blankets. — How does it feel when you leave home? Wild. — When was the last time you traveled? Boulder, to visit my mom and the mountains.Supposedly I was born there. — Where do you dream of escaping to? A two-month siesta to Mexico to escape the frozen snow in New York. — What do you look forward to when you’re coming home? Making out with my dog! She doesn’t have any teeth, so it’s amazingly special.

Alex Brunet Photographer — What is home to you? Family and relaxing. — How does it feel when you leave home? Nostalgic. — What do you miss when you leave home? My mum’s dishes. — When was the last time you traveled? Last week, I was in South of France with my family and grilfriend. — Where do you dream of escaping to? Argentina. I think I’d feel really free there. — What do you look forward to when you’re coming home? Spending time with people I love.

Claire Marie Thornton Contributing Editor — What is home to you? NYC is where my work and the family I’ve created for myself live, but home will always be Tennessee. — What do you miss when you leave home? Mountains and Memphisstyle BBQ. — What do you love escaping when you leave home? Boredom and routine. — Where do you dream of escaping to? The English countryside. I’d have a fledgling garden and be a successful detective. j. | 016

“I imagine eating tons of food, doing too much shopping and going completely broke.

— What is home to you? Home is my boyfriend [bandmate Gabe D’Amico]. We travel so much. We’re always packing our belongings, and everything around us changes. The one constant is him: We get to eat meals and sleep together every day. It makes not having a real home feel normal. — How does home make you feel? My true home, where all my things are, is at my parents’ place. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy. I love seeing my younger siblings, my grandma, my papa and mama. — How does it feel when you leave home? I can be excited, nervous, pumped, happy, but always a little sad to be missing all the stuff that happens when I’m gone. — What do you miss? My doggy, Amelia; my family; and all my clothes and shoes that don’t make it in my bag. — What do you love escaping when you leave home? Doing dishes. — When was the last time you traveled? A couple of weeks ago I went to Chicago, Pittsburgh, Toronto, Montreal, Vermont, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Northapmton, Winooski, Boston, Detroit and Columbus. I played a bunch of shows, toured with friends from home, visited a lot of old friends, drank lots of alcohol, shopped and ate lots of food. Everywhere we went, there j. | 023

just so happened to be some old buddies. I’m leaving for another trip in about an hour. — Where do you dream of escaping to? I would love to escape to Japan or South Korea. I imagine eating tons of food, doing too much shopping and going completely broke! Maybe come back with another tattoo. — What do you look forward to most when you’re coming home? Cooking my own meals, seeing my dog, doing my laundry and being able to work on some artwork in my own room. — Describe your new album, In Heaven, in exactly 10 words. Space, blood, dreams, fiction, nonfiction, smiles, tears, glow, float, spin. — If In Heaven were an animal, what would it be? A chameleon. — Tell us a secret about In Heaven. The song “Spain” is about my dog and cat being mad about me always leaving them while I travel. — What inspired you while you were making the album? A lot of old anime intros from the ’80s and ’90s. — When you listen to In Heaven, what does it remind you of? Right now, all I can think about is how we recorded it. I can’t stop picturing us in the studio while winter was turning into spring; we locked ourselves up and didn’t see anybody but each other. — Who is In Heaven for? All types of people.

blood orange

In the music video for Blood Orange’s “Dinner,” Dev Hynes—a Michael Jordan “Jumpman” stud shining in his earlobe—mugs on a basketball court with a neighborhood crew of his Brooklyn friends. That no one, in fact, seems particularly good at basketball is beside the point. What the clip, with its Spike Lee–dream nostalgia and sexy, soft-focus confidence (tounge-in-cheek or otherwise), achieves for the BK-by-UK musician is an undeniable claiming of Brooklyn cool and a proud declaration of the artists’ left-of-pond home. And no different is Hynes’ Blood Orange debut, Coastal Grooves, its liquid grace nestling sparse grooves in a soulful strut. j. | 046

diana’s banana babies

If TV’s Arrested Development had a hand in revitalizing the novelty of the chocolate-covered frozen banana, let’s bow to Diana’s for perfecting the tasty treat’s tricky formula. Awkward in size, shape and consistency, frozen bananas tend to lack convenience—and are too often a total mess—but Diana’s is a revelation: its chilly innards fleshy and firm; its chocolate skin, dusted in crumbled peanuts, soft to the teeth yet firm in its form. The key is portions— miniature bananas (“Babies” as Diana’s calls them). “Ten cents get you nuts,” George Michael Bluth once whimpered from his banana-stand post. We’ll gladly indulge. j. | 076
